ife is always full of surprises! Twists and turns and new opportunities, and with that Charlotte Girl Magazine was created. Welcome to our very first issue of Charlotte Girl Magazine! We are a luxury digital lifestyle magazine. Sharing all things relevant to living a luxury lifestyle. As we all prepare for our American holiday we at CG are thankful to be a part of this bustling city.

This November is an election year, and as some may just be thankful that it is over, we are sharing the spirit of America throughout this month’s magazine.

In keeping with the “Spirit of America” we share a visit to our Nation’s Capitol, exploring D.C. during the holidays. And the article “The First Ladies of Fashion” is about America’s most iconic 1st ladies style influences.

How Meditation Changes Your Mind & Body

M

editation trains your mind to focus on the moment instead of worrying about what occurred in the past or what could happen in the future. All you need is five minutes a day. A Study published in April 2013 in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience reported that the practice can reduce anxiety levels by up to 22%. Research has suggested that meditating can actually form new and permanent neutral connections in the brain. Anyone can do it, and the more consistent you are, the easier it will become. So take a timer, a notepad and a pen to a quite room with soft (but not dim) lighting. Sit up straight in a comfortable chair, remove your shoes and socks and get started.

YOUR BRAIN RELEASES HAPPY CHEMICALS You get a boost of serotonin, dopamine and endorphins, all linked to a good mood.

BLOOD PRESSURE DROPS And the effect isn't just temporary: a Medical College of Wisconsin study showed that people who meditated twice a day for 20 minutes lowered their blood pressure by 5 mm Hg.

Observe whether your mind is quiet of whether thoughts begin to flow. Are these creative thoughts or judgmental ones?

Are you accepting the world as it is or are you somehow not satisfied? Return to your breathing each time your mind wonders.

When meditating, be aware of your mindfulness, investigating, concentration, tranquility, energy and effort, and equanimity and balance. Which qualities are present?

Which are missing? See if you can enhance them at your next sitting.

Don't be angry at yourself for feeling angry, or guilty for feeling guilty. Simply recognize and acknowledge your feelings, it is the first step towards changing them.

If you maintain mindfulness, nothing can upset you. You will not become angry or agitated. You will be able to stay patient, peaceful, and happy no matter what happens. This is because a negative state of mind cannot arise at the same time as a moment of mindfulness.

GAYLORD NATIONAL RESORT’S ICE SCULPTURES

Gaylord National Resort creates an indoor ice sculpture every year, and each year is different. The sculptures typically use more than 5,000 blocks of ice, and are sculpted by hand by dozens of artists from around the world. The sculptures are interactive, taking up a whole room, so you can walk around and enjoy it from many angles and perspectives.

Just be sure you bundle up to go. The ice sculpture is kept at a consistent nine degrees Fahrenheit.

Many historic mansions do candle light tours during the holidays in the Capitol. Take your pick of any or all of them. Just be sure one of them is Mount Vernon. George Washington’s home is a must-see place on any trip to D.C., but it is especially so during the holidays.

You will learn about the holiday traditions of the Washington family, meet costumed characters representing the famous political gores of the early days of America, and get to see the beautiful estate the way it was in the 1700’s, when candles were the only source of light after dark.

feast Cloister Honey Went from Hobby to Empire in Less Than a Decade

oanne de la Rionda gave her husband Randall York a beehive for Christmas 10 years ago. He had no idea what to do with it.

But 50 hives, thousands of pounds of honey and 3 million bees later, the couple behind Cloister Honey now believes they have a knack for it.

“Sometimes you choose your hobby, and sometimes your hobby chooses you,” York said.

Named for the couple’s neighborhood “The Cloisters,” this honey factory near Charlotte’s North End produces dozens of varieties of the sweet stuff and sells it in 42 states.

Each of the 50 hives on-site contains 60,000 bees, and each hive has its own queen, ecosystem and distinct personality (gentle, aggressive, etc.). York has been stung more times than he can count, but that’s not because honey bees are mean.

Sweeten Your Holidays with Recipes Made with Honey

H

oney is nature’s perfect sweetener. This golden elixir is easier for your body to metabolize than traditional sugar; it calms coughs and can even help you sleep better at night. Some people even find local honey helps with their seasonal allergies.

For advice on how to incorporate this superfood into our holiday dishes, we talked to Joanne de la Rionda and Randall York, the owners of Charlotte’s Cloister Honey.

Joanne suggested tossing steamed carrots in a bowl with Cloister’s cinnamon or pumpkin spice honey varieties, or glazing green beans, asparagus or Brussel sprouts with Cloister’s Arbol-infused honey for a unique side dish. Here are a couple more of Joanne’s favorite recipes:

Orange-Cranberry Sauce Ingredients: • 1 cup fresh orange juice • 1/2 cup wildflower or orange blossom honey • 2 tablespoons orange zest (from about 2 oranges) • 1 12-ounce package cranberries Directions: In a saucepan over medium heat, dissolve the honey in the orange juice.

Add 2 tablespoons of orange zest.

Add the cranberries and cook, uncovered, until most of the berries have popped and the sauce has thickened quite a bit (it’ll continue to thicken as it cools). This should take about 10 to 15 minutes.

Taste the sauce and add the remaining orange zest, if desired.

Pour the sauce in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

feast Pumpkin Walnut Baklava Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups pumpkin puree • 1/4 cup sugar • 2 tablespoons light or dark brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon salt • Pinch each: freshly grated nutmeg, ground cloves, ground cardamom • 1 large egg • 1 package phyllo dough, about 23 sheets, thawed • 1 stick unsalted butter, melted and cooled • 1 cup walnuts, chopped Topping: • 2/3 cup warmed Cloister Honey Whipped Pumpkin Spice Honey • 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt Directions: Preheat the oven to 350.

In a medium bowl, mix together the pumpkin puree, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom and egg.

Next, grab a clean kitchen towel and dampen it, being sure to wring out any excess water. Place it over the thawed phyllo dough as you assemble the baklava. (Phyllo dough tends to dry out very quickly and assembling the baklava takes a bit of time. The damp kitchen towel will help with this.)

Brush the first sheet of phyllo dough with melted butter and transfer it, buttered-side down, into a 9x 12 baking dish. Repeat this process for the next 7 layers. (Eight bottom layers of phyllo will give you a sturdy piece of baklava, versus a flimsy one.). Top the eighth layer with a few teaspoons of pumpkin mixture, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the pumpkin with a

small handful of chopped walnuts.

Butter the next 5 sheets, placing them buttered-side down into the baking dish. Top the fifth layer of phyllo dough with a few teaspoons of pumpkin mixture and walnuts. Repeat this for the next two layers. Finish with layers of dough on top. You should end up with four layers of baklava.

Using a sharp knife, slice the baklava into 1-inch diamonds or squares.

Transfer to the oven to bake for 15-20 minutes, until the top is lightly golden brown and crisp.

While the baklava is baking, make the topping: In a small skillet, mix together the honey, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Heat until everything is dissolved. When the baklava comes out of the oven, drizzle the warmed honey mixture on top.

Allow it to sit for 1-3 hours so it has a chance to marinate.

“A honey bee will only sting you because it’s afraid — it’s caught in your hair or clothes or something,” said de la Rionda, who is ironically allergic to bees.

The couple also prides themselves on coming up with different types of honey; Cloister’s “whipped” variety is spreadable (as opposed to traditional pourable honey) and can contain exotic flavors like cinnamon or even spicy ghost pepper.

De la Rionda’s current favorite is the new “Power Seeds” variety that contains chia, hemp, flax, sunflower,

Cloister’s staff even helped the Ritz-Carlton set up two hives on its rooftop to provide honey for the drinks at The Punch Room and the pastries at Bar Cocoa.

“Anyone can do beekeeping as a hobby,” de la Rionda said, adding that every county Extension office will offer a class in January for beginner beekeepers.

And the benefits of honey are numerous: it’s easier to metabolize than sugar, it’s a better cough suppressant than many over-the-counter syrups,

he Storybook Ball Featuring Peter Pan with Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, was an exciting evening of fun and philanthropy. Community members, corporate partners and philanthropic leaders walked the red carpet in the heart of uptown.

Held Saturday, September 17 at the Hilton Charlotte Center City. It was a spectacular evening of dinner, dancing, networking, and a silent and live auction. The evening celebrated the work and missions of the donors and volunteers, and most importantly the families who call the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte their home.

hursday evening September 29th was an evening of fun, as Neiman Marcus celebrated 10 years in Charlotte. NM hosted a fall trends runway event emceed by Joe Zee of Yahoo’s Style’s. The evening highlighted two Charlotte organizations.

harlotte Fashion Week concluded Fashion week in high style. The final cat walk of the week was held at the Hilton Center City on September 24th. The evening was a black tie affair. The night consisted of a sit down dinner and dancing as well as a high fashion runway fashion show. Produced by Rita Miles of Charlotte Seen.

Charlotte Fashion Week Charity was the Second Harvest Food Bank and the Oscar and Evelyn Overton Charitable Foundation associated with the Cheesecake Factory.

Charlotte Seen exceeded their goal of 10,000.00 pounds and raised over 13000.00 pounds of peanut butter for the peanut butter drive.

society sightings JDRF Hope Gala

T

his year’s honorees Rita and Ken Church, parents of country music superstar Eric Church will be honored for their steadfast commitment and support of JDRF. This evenings event is one of the area’s largest single event fundraiser. Last year it raised over $1.2 million, which was the most successful gala in the 43 year history of the chapter. This year over 700 guests attended to further fund type 1 research. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a childhood disease, although 85% of those living with T1D are adults.

Rita Church was diagnosed at age 53 with T1D and is a resident of Hickory, NC, Rita is a ardent volunteer with JDRF as well as her husband Ken. ” We are extremely gracious and humbled to be selected by JDRF as this year’s Gala honorees. TiD is a 24/7 struggle and I am in awe of how my wife handles her daily “ups and downs” with such grace.

Our biggest focus is on prevention: we want to find a cure so that our grandchildren’s generation no longer has to endure this lifetime battle” shares Ken Church.

A

s America gets ready to welcome a new First Lady, or the first ever First Gentleman, there will no doubt be a lot of talk about what everyone is wearing.

From Hillary’s pantsuits to Donald’s hair, appearance has already been a big part of the campaign. But this is hardly new territory, the country has long been fascinated by the fashions of the women in the White House. For decades the Smithsonian Institution’s exhibit about the First Ladies has been one of the most popular attractions at the museum.

From Barbara Bush's costume pearls to Nancy Reagan's signature color of red, Michelle Obama’s casual chic, to Jackie Kennedy’s Chanel suits, First Ladies are almost always known first and foremost for their fashion.

Jackie Kennedy is of course considered one of the ultimate fashion icons. She herself is said to have modeled her own look after another fashion icon – Audrey Hepburn. Kennedy’s classic elegance prompted many a trend, some of which remain popular today. The endlessly chic mother of two made pillbox hats, oversized sunglasses, and long white gloves must have statement pieces. In a 2014 TIME magazine article called decoding Jackie O’s Signature Style, Mia Tramz writes, “Jackie is a bonafide fashion icon who inspired millions with

her chic wardrobe and effortless style.”

Our current First Lady is also said to have inspired millions with her own signature style. Kate Betts, a well-known fashion journalist recently published “Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and The Power of Style” and told Travel and Leisure, “Jackie Kennedy and Michelle Obama came from very different backgrounds, but they are similar because they both wear very simple clothes and styles that are easy to emulate. Mrs. Obama has rewritten the dress code for women who work.”

Mrs. Obama made cardigans and J Crew cool and made it ok to bare your arms, wear flats and bold prints. She has proven you can wear clothes that are affordable and comfortable and still be stylish – so much so that many of her looks often sell out shortly after she wears them. The mother of two is the girl next door – who just happens to look fabulous every time she leaves the house.

Despite being viewed as the grandmother next door, Barbara Bush made her own fashion statement when she

refused to dye her mane of white hair and was rarely caught without a strand (or two or three!) of costume pearls. Celebrating her 90th birthday she told the Today Show there was actually a very practical reason for not coloring her hair. "I wanted to play golf, I wanted to play tennis, I wanted to swim. And my hair turned…orange, green, yellow, depending upon how much chlorine in the pool. So I decided to go white."

Color was a big part of the reign of the first lady who immediately preceded Mrs. Bush. Nancy Reagan, who was an actress when she married Ronald Reagan, brought Hollywood glamour and an affinity for the color red to Pennsylvania Avenue. The color even earned the nickname, “Reagan Red.” She told W magazine in 2007: “I always liked red. It’s a picker-upper.”

There is a long history of style in the White House and there is no doubt history will once again be made this November. Fashionistas everywhere can’t wait to see what the next addition to the Smithsonian exhibit looks like.

A Patriotic Pour Reviewing Spirit of America Bourbon

ew things feel more American than sipping a glass of bourbon, and the particularly patriotic Spirit of America Bourbon makes you think of bald eagles, fireworks and lots of red, white and blue.

To review this relatively new bourbon produced by Indianapolisbased Hobson & Roberts Distilling Company, we reached out to Stephen Toth, the manager of the Gallery Restaurant at The Ballantyne Hotel.

Toth knows his whiskey — he has more than 10 years of luxury food and beverage management experience and currently facilitates the hugely popular Whiskey Club of Ballantyne, which meets at the hotel monthly.

Spirit of America is an 86-proof bourbon consisting of 51 percent corn, 45 percent wheat and 4 percent malted barley.

It’s aged for two years in new charred American oak barrels and is now available in 12 states including North and South Carolina.

Dark brown? Just like wine has different colors and varieties, so does whiskey.

Stephen Toth, manager of the Gallery Restaurant at The Ballantyne Hotel, pours a glass of Spirit of America Bourbon ly smells like honey, sweet corn, a tiny bit of caramel and a sweet grain like cereal.

It does have a distinct alcohol scent, but not enough to burn the sinuses.

Toth said the initial taste includes notes of sweet corn, vanilla and honey, moving into a caramel flavor on the mid-palate and finishing with a taste of creamy vanilla and baking spice.

“It’s remarkably smooth for its age,” said Toth, who described the bourbon’s finish as “short and sweet.”

He said it would make a great cocktail bourbon 76

SNIFF: Smell plays a huge role in taste, Toth says. If your whiskey is a lower proof, you can bring it close to your nose, but if it’s cask-strength or has a high alcohol content, you’ll want to keep the glass at about chin level. Then sniff like you’d sniff a glass of wine, looking for familiar flavors like vanilla and caramel.

TASTE: Know your palates.

The initial palate is what you first taste, followed by the mid-palate (the taste you get when the liquid hits all your taste buds) and the finish (any lingering flavors after you’ve swallowed).
