Message from the Head of School

AAS I REFLECT on this issue of Perspectives, I cannot help but see the vibrancy with which our Key Values and Commitments came to life throughout this past year.

In the realm of Educational Excellence, we first celebrate the amazing achievement of the Class of 2023, as well as their exceptional results in the college process. As scholars, athletes, artists, and leaders, they set a standard for excellence both in and out of school. There is also a tribute to the enduring legacy of retired history teacher Ed Kelly, who taught at Country Day for 37 years and passed away in March. His ability to challenge, inspire and support his students exemplified our calling to develop each student’s love of learning and to celebrate each student’s abilities and talents. We also highlight the impact of Simon Keilty, science teacher in the Middle School, whose commitment to inquiry-based learning and innovative programming invites students each day to engage with and question the natural world around them.

Our commitment to Community at Country Day asks us to value the relationships uniting us as a school and connecting us with our local and global communities. In this issue of Perspectives, we celebrate the amazing journey of 10 students and faculty leaders to Ghana, Africa—Country Day’s first visit there—where our students visited local schools, engaged with dignitaries, and learned about the culture and history of this remarkable country. The learning in this journey, as well as the relationships built, strengthened our students’ and our school’s connection to the world. It reminds all of us that the local and the global are intrinsically connected.

In the domain of student Service and Character, there is the inspirational and innovative “24 in 24” challenge, spearheaded by Will Grainger ’23 and Casey Scott ’23, with the ultimate goal of raising funds for the Second Harvest Food Bank. Their answering the call of giving of themselves for public good and exemplifying compassion for others not only raised essential funds for a crucial organization, it taught the students what they could achieve together when they put their minds to the task and framed challenges as opportunity.

This is just a sampling of the stories from this past year. At the start of 2022–23, wanting to have our community experience a year free of the constraints of COVID, we established the theme of “inspired normalcy” to guide our thinking and our efforts. And thankfully, we did have an uninterrupted year. However, so much that transpired transcended the “normal.” Each day there was vibrant evidence of our Mission and our Key Values and Commitments come to life.

A profound example of Country Day’s commitment to Community is reflected in the final section of this issue where we celebrate the dynamic leadership of our parent support groups, the diverse ways in which Country Day gives back to the community, and finally, a celebration of the extraordinary philanthropy of our parents and enduring friends of the school. Whether it be, for example, the gift of land in Weddington by Smoky and Margaret Bissell—which has provided already so many opportunities for our students—or an endowed scholarship celebrating an important individual in the present or from the past…or a generous gift to the Country Day Fund, we are blessed to have a community that is united in supporting the legacy and the future of Country Day.

2022–23 was indeed an inspirational year! Special appreciation must go to our Board of Trustees, whose leadership and collaboration is foundational in the health of our school. We must also thank our parent leaders and volunteers who ensure our community is united and supported in multiple ways. And finally, we must thank our faculty and staff who go above and beyond to make our Country Day Mission come to life each day. Enjoy this issue of Perspectives and celebrate the 2022–23 school year with us!

Celebrating the Class of 2023 T

THE CONFERRING OF a Charlotte Country Day School diploma is so much more than a piece of paper acknowledging the completion of courses required for graduation. It signifies a young person who has learned the value of commitment and hard work, who knows how to solve problems and overcome difficulties, who possesses the ability to think critically and express oneself clearly, and who knows how to seek help from others while readily giving of themselves for the public good. It means Country Day Ready...ready to keep growing and making an impact on college campuses and beyond.

On May 26, the 131 members of the Class of 2023, along with their proud families, teachers, and friends, commemorated their remarkable achievements during the 62nd Commencement ceremony.

Honoring Longtime Faculty:

Pam Pardue Goode ’73 Creates

Lasting Legacy on Bissell Campus

IIN MAY, CURRENT and retired faculty and staff who have served the Middle School for 20+ years came together for the installation of a new piece of art on Bissell Campus. The artwork, created by cut glass artist Pam Pardue Goode ’73, features a tree with a leaf for each employee. Since 2010, as the Middle School’s first Artist in Residence, Pam’s glasswork has been installed in several areas around Bissell Campus. Head of Middle School Warren Sepkowitz has collaborated with Pam on other projects as he shares, “I like surrounding children with beauty, history, stories, and honorings. And no one has helped me more on this path than our resident angel, Pam Goode.”

At the ceremony, social studies teacher Aaron Cooper gave a moving tribute inspired by Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. He said: “To the students gathered here today—like the boy in the book—you are watched over and cared for by the best faculty and staff there is…not because of how many college degrees or awards they have won, but because of their willingness to do whatever it takes to help you find success and to navigate the turbulent waters of middle school.

“For those on the tree and for all those standing here today, know that nearly my entire adult life will be spent on this campus. When I came here in 1997, I wasn’t much older than a boy, and when I leave here I won’t be too far away from being one who could use a stump to sit on and rest. What you have given me both as a person and as a teacher since that first day and what you give to each other every day has no equal in any other school or workplace.”

Pushing The Limits for a Good Cause

IIF SOMEONE ASKED you to run to raise money, you probably would. But if someone asked you to run 24 miles in 24 hours, starting each mile at the top of every hour, would you still?

Student-athletes Will Grainger ’23 and Casey Scott ’23 not only participated but were founders of creating a 24-in-24 fundraising event on their own, and they have done it twice.

“There are very loose rules on how you complete the mile; you just have to run,” Will explained. “The challenge is more a mental test of willpower than of physical athleticism.”

Inspired by a TikTok challenge, 24 in 24 was adopted by the pair to raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank, where both

as a service project, though Casey’s dad donated money to Second Harvest Food Bank in our name,” Will explained. “In August 2021, we ran it for the first time as a service project, before doing it again in January 2023.”

“The Second Harvest Food Bank does a lot of good work for food deserts and food-deprived individuals in the Charlotte area,” Casey added. “Will reached out to a bunch of our friends to participate in the first fundraiser, and we all did it together and it continued to grow.”

To raise awareness, they created a GoFundMe connected directly to Second Harvest Food Bank and spread the word by reaching out to friends and family and sharing on social media, posting selfies of their solo runs in the early hours of the morning, and videos of their group’s progress through the day. From just a $500 donation in their name, Will and Casey raised over $2,000.

Keep in mind, this is a true 24-in-24 challenge, meaning all day, all night. “From this fundraiser, I learned the extent of my willpower,” Casey said. “I continued time and time again to realize what I could do when I really put my mind to it, even

“At Country Day, we built relationships through the shared struggle of running each hour. Spending hours together, pushing ourselves, brought us all closer,” Will said. “I learned how supportive people can be. As difficult as the challenge was, at times it was just fun to talk as we ran and hung out between each mile. The struggle was made easier by sharing it

The pair hopes to make this an annual event, inspiring others to compete in similar challenges in the name of charitable giving. Through Will and Casey’s leadership, we are shown how actions lead to influence and the capacity to be the change, even when no one is watching you run.

Country Day’s First Trip to Ghana Brings Lasting Memories

Over Spring Break, 10 Upper School students, along with faculty trip leaders David Lynn, Tianna Butler, and Peinda Diop, visited peer schools in Accra, Cape Coast, and Kumasi, Ghana, and learned more about the region’s history.

SSTEPPING OFF THE PLANE into 94-degree heat in the beginning of March was both a welcoming and shocking experience. We knew it was going to be warm in the heart of Ghana, but the thick, hot breeze reminded us that back home in Charlotte our peers were still bundled up in jackets. After numerous hours of travel across land and water, our Country Day crew— composed of 10 students and three adult trip leaders—arrived in Accra, Ghana, for a 10-day experience and learning journey during Spring Break in March.

In fact, the Ghana People-to-People Experience began well before we stepped foot on Ghanian soil. The inspiration for one of our first international travel experiences post-COVID was inspired by Emmanuel Omari ’22. Now studying at Queens University of Charlotte, Omari made a tremendous impact at Country Day as a senior exchange student during the 2021-22 academic year.

In September 2022, Samuel Pyne—the current mayor of Kumasi, Ghana—visited Country Day and spoke with a group of Upper School students. After great conversation, the students vowed to visit Mayor Pyne and the second-largest city in Ghana when they ventured to the continent of Africa later in the school year. In preparation for the trip, we organized the group for a traditional Ghanian meal at Country Day hosted by the amazing Chef Awo Amenumey, owner of Eh’vivi Ghanaian Cuisine in Charlotte. The delicious meal consisted of jollof with honey suya chicken, fried yam with egg stew and shito, kelewele, waakye with beef and fish stew, gari, cocoyam chips, sobolobo, and more. The gathering was a time for students and families to partake in the wonderful meal, learn more about Ghana, and hear about the multiple visits students would make along their journey through Accra, Cape Coast, and Kumasi.

Connecting with new and familiar friends

Upper School students Liza Bray, Bryce Vanfield, Bryce Moore, Livia Reuter, Kya Newell, Zach Lu, Benjamin Farnham, Alexandra Connors, Calliope Workinger and Nile Collins-Friedland, along with faculty trip leaders spent time visiting four peer schools in Ghana across all three cities. Senior Liza Bray shares, “While we were in Kumasi, we had the opportunity to visit many elementary schools and one high school. This activity was my favorite as I loved hearing about what school looks like for different people around the globe. I found it interesting to compare how similar our days were and how we all learn the same things, just in different ways.”

While in Ghana, Country Day students enjoyed an evening of food and cultural activities with Omari’s family and visited Omari’s former school, Ghana National College.

Students also visited and learned about the devastating history of the slave dungeons at Elmina Castle and Cape Coast Castle. Other visits included a meeting with US Ambassador Virginia Palmer at the US Embassy in Accra, walking the treetop canopy at Kakum National Park, exploring the fish market of Elmina, taking in the history of the Ashanti people at Manhyia Palace, and receiving a warm welcome at City Hall in Kumasi.

This was Country Day’s first visit to Ghana and will help open the door to future possibilities and global friendships. Liza summarized the powerful experience by sharing, “Ghana was a once–in–a–lifetime opportunity, and I would 100 percent recommend it to any student who is thinking about going on the trip.”

Remembering Eddie Kelly

Edward Eugene Kelly, who taught history for 37 years, made every student believe that they could succeed, a former student recalled.

AA GREAT TEACHER CAN have a big impact on your life. For 37 years, students that took one of his history classes at Charlotte Country Day School were fortunate enough to have such an instructor—who prepared them not only for his class, but for the future. Edward Eugene Kelly, who passed away on March 13 at 77, was that kind of teacher.

J.D. DuPuy ’92, who as a ninth grader met Kelly, felt the weight of speaking at his memorial service on March 25. A friend told him, “No pressure, you’re just speaking on behalf of thousands of students who were positively impacted by this great man in countless ways.”

According to DuPuy, to say Mr. Kelly was hard, strict, or demanding would be an understatement. “There was no time for daydreaming in his class, as your hand would be cramping from so diligently taking notes.”

Kelly’s two most popular courses were European History and Ancient Medieval History, but he didn’t just teach history. He brought it to life in his classroom.

A fellow educator, Brad Touma, said Kelly was a mentor who taught him what it takes to be a good teacher. “The one thing students always talked about regarding him was he was

News & Notes

so well-versed when he was talking on the Second World War, he would break into a perfect impersonation of Winston Churchill and recite one of his speeches, or he would break out in German when he was speaking about Otto Von Bismarck,” Touma recalls.

Kelly minored in German and majored in history at Pfeiffer College, where he was influenced to become a history teacher, according to his brother, David Kelly. “Eddie would go into an empty classroom at night to prepare for his exams or his weekly assignments and he would go through the material and do it out loud like he was teaching a class.”

Stuart Richards Pfeifer ’95, another of Kelly’s students, knew him most of her life because her mother was a teacher at the school and also a friend. She remembers a time when she was 12 years old, and Kelly was tasked with watching her while her parents went on vacation. Upon hearing, “Eddie is going to stay with you for the weekend,” she thought, “That doesn’t sound like a ton of fun. I mean, he was a pretty stern guy.”

“I came home from school and everything I thought the weekend was going to be like changed in an instant. He was in our kitchen cooking dinner and singing,” she recalls. “We watched ‘Halloween’ and it went like this moment in time where he went from this stern teacher to seeming like a human being. We had so much fun, and I think our relationship was different after that.”

Pfeifer, who took his European History class said, “He taught a very complex class that was super challenging, but he made every single student feel like they could succeed in that class if they just put the effort in. To do well in his class, there was no better feeling. You felt like you summited Mount Everest when you made him happy and you succeeded by mastering the material.”

That mantra was prominently displayed in his classroom with the words his students would never forget: “If you have thoroughly mastered the material, you will do well.”

He gave them the tools to do that by creating a handbook for writing a term paper that they still use at Country Day. His brother David mentioned if students misplaced or lost their copy, they would request another one so they could use it to prepare for research papers.

Regarding his methods of learning, DuPuy said, “I can tell you hands down, not one single person who ever had his class would deny that he, more than any other teacher we had, prepared us for actual classroom work at the collegiate level. I marched into Davidson using his methods to write my term papers while my contemporaries from other schools were saying, ‘How do I do this?’”

Pfeifer remembered when she and DuPuy took him out to lunch for his birthday, maybe three or four years ago.

“He wanted to go to this particular restaurant because he had seen it on “Charlotte Talks.” Eddie was fully fluent in German, and this poor waiter has no idea what’s getting ready to happen and he orders the entire meal in German. It was just hilarious.”

Pfeifer said he made every student feel special. “He had a way of when he was with you, he was just with you,” Pfeifer said.

DuPuy explained, “He had this way of making you feel like you were the only student in the world that mattered to him.” He said that seeing so many former students relaying memories on social media about how Mr. Kelly impacted their lives triggered a little jealousy. “Wait a minute. That was our thing. I was the special one!”

The outpouring of affection for him on the Legacy obituary website demonstrated how special he was. Marcelle Gorelick ’84 said, “Whenever I write or organize a history paper or any detailed research, I try to do it ‘Mr. Kelly’ style. What he taught me got me through law school and continues with me through my life.”

Stephen Embree ’98 said, “I realized only later that he was teaching more than just history.”

None of us know how long we will be here, but it’s the legacy we leave with others that withstands time. Edward Kelly made his mark on so many lives, as former student Mary Beth Tice McIntyre ’90 so well describes:

“He taught us how to think, how to study, and to believe in our capabilities. His legacy will continue far beyond the days.”

Reflecting on Success

As I reflect on the 2022–23 school year, I am exceptionally proud to be an alumnus, a parent, and your Board Chair. As I wrote to you last year, we are entering an exciting era in our school’s history. We have the opportunity to build upon the visionary foundation laid down by past leaders and put to meaningful use the incredible facilities made available by your generous support. Looking ahead, I am excited to see continually developing programming and student opportunities growing in ways that set our school apart.

We remain deeply grateful to Smoky and Margaret Bissell for gifting our school over 330 acres in Weddington last year. Their remarkable support offers our students in the immediate and distant future much to be excited about. Under the leadership of Head of School Marcel Gauthier, supported by CFO David Mancos and Facilities and Plant Operations Manager Greg Walters, we have moved forward over the past year in significant ways regarding the Weddington Farm.

Experienced personnel have been hired to both manage the physical property and develop and implement impactful educational programming outside of the traditional classroom. In the coming years, the Board of Trustees will plan to achieve the best and highest use for Weddington Farm in the interest of current and future students of Country Day. The initial steps taken to date and those which will be taken in the coming months will not only enrich current students’ experiences but also inform the Board of Trustees and school leadership as we seek to maximize the property’s potential.

On Cannon Campus, the school’s leadership sought to address parking

challenges that arose last year following our post-pandemic return. These challenges were an indirect reflection of our robust enrollment, strong parent partnerships, and durable traditions that build community. To relieve student parking pressures, while enhancing the athletics scheduling experience, we have created a new parking area on the south side of campus near Dowd Field. This new area offers over 100 additional parking spaces and expands Crawford Field, which will enable more flexible athletics practice scheduling.

In quickly addressing the parking challenge, Marcel showed us early on that he is a pragmatic and seasoned leader, who is highly capable of leading a complex school like Country Day. Nimble in his role, he expertly manages the day-to-day details of running a school, while also taking the long view, inspiring those around him to think big about what’s best for our students today and tomorrow. I look forward to working with Marcel in the year ahead as the Board of Trustees focuses on strategic planning and seeks to define what excellence means at Country Day.

We are fortunate to enter strategic planning from a position of strength. Our facilities are second to none in our region. Parents expressed deep satisfaction with their children’s teachers and academic programming in our end-of-year survey. For these reasons and more, our admissions pipeline is exceedingly robust, and reenrollment continues to exceed 97 percent. On top of tuition, our community expresses its satisfaction with the Country Day educational experience by making our school a philanthropic priority. Once again, the Country Day Fund broke school records for funds raised and

community participation (please see the next page for more details). Thank you to everyone who has given generously to make an impact in the lives of our students.

Lastly, please join me in thanking two trustees rolling off the Board of Trustees this year: Stephen Shuford and George Dewey IV ’90. We are grateful for their dedication, commitment, and leadership. They have both served the school well. For the 2023–24 school year, Brian Chambers, Pontea Dixon, and Su Ping Lu will be joining the Board of Trustees. Please join me in welcoming them into this new volunteer leadership role.

Over the next year as your Board Chair, I am looking forward to the school year ahead and playing an integral role in where strategic planning points us. With the strength of our school’s leadership, the resources available to us, and the commitment of our community, Country Day is well-positioned to continue improving upon an already outstanding student experience. Thank you for your wide-ranging support across so many channels and your personal contribution to the genuine, heartfelt sense of community that sets our school apart.

Sincerely,

2022–23 Parent Support Group Report

Empowering Parent Involvement

Our school benefits greatly from incredible parent involvement—working together to enhance student programs, fostering a sense of community, and generating funds. While the Country Day Fund serves as the vehicle for community members to support the school’s core operating budget, three parent support groups—Parents’ Association, Boosters Club, and POCIS—provide opportunities for community-building, volunteerism, and supplemental support to our school. Thousands of parents have volunteered, given back, and supported us through their efforts throughout this school year, and it has made an incredible difference. In the spirit of transparency and celebration, we want to take a moment to not only say thank you, but also report back to you on how your volunteer and fundraising efforts made an impact.

From Laurie Hedrick, Parents’ Association President

This year the Parents’ Association built connection, fostered community spirit, and raised supplemental funds through community events, including Big Saturday. Because of strong community support the PA was able to provide hospitality and appreciation events for faculty and staff throughout the school year and support specific enhancements in each division. Items include the Parent Speaker Series, much-needed theater enhancements, yard signs for all of our deserving seniors, new books for our Lower School students, continuing a beloved “Artist in Residence” program for our Middle School students, and a large tent for the entire school to use for events versus paying high-cost rental fees.

What is even more important is all the opportunities we had to gather as a community to celebrate and build connection: Run For Good, Halloween Parade, Big Saturday, and more. As always, I am in awe of what our collective community of faculty, staff, students, and parents can accomplish together.

18 PERSPECTIVES Impact REPORT

From Kevin and Courtney O’Neil, Boosters Club Presidents

The Boosters Club supports our student-athletes through a variety of spirit-promotion, fundraising, and community-building activities. This year, we helped foster connections across divisions by hosting Lower School spirit events in each season. Additionally, over 500 families from Lower, Middle, and Upper School, and alumni joined the Boosters Club. These funds, along with concessions and the Boosters Golf Tournament, support the athletics department and fund community events that help boost school spirit. This year's funds are helping to purchase items such as new Middle School uniforms, state championship jackets, team travel, and coaches' professional development. A big thank you to all of our parent volunteers who also sold concessions at over 150 events, including Middle School, junior varsity, and varsity sports, plus Big Saturday and Special Olympics. Go Bucs!

From Brianna McRae, POCIS Chair

People of Color in Independent Schools (POCIS) supports families of color, the school’s DEIB initiatives, and serves as a space of unity and belonging. This year, we hosted a fantastic mix of family connection and fundraising events. Lower School families leapt into fall with our first ever Lower School Fall Family Gathering and the entire POCIS community celebrated the holiday season at one of our largest Holiday Potlucks to date. This year also saw the return of the Buccaneer’s Choice Dance supporting the Mark E. Reed Scholarship. Finally, the year culminated in POCIS celebrating 38 graduating POCIS students, one of the highest numbers in Country Day history. Thank you for all of your support.

2022–23 Admissions Report

This year, I celebrated my 40th year at Country Day, 38 of which have been in admissions. You would think after so many years, I wouldn’t find admissions work to be as rewarding and as exciting as it is; however, I think I have the best job at our school!

What makes the work such a joy is getting to know each family and applicant. My team wants all visitors to feel comfortable and know that we care about each applicant. We want to answer all their questions and share the Country Day story so that they can envision their family with us.

There is no doubt that academic excellence is something every family wants for their child; however, one of the most impactful ways we share our story is through our current parent voices. I am so grateful for our Country Day parents who partner with us as they share their experiences with prospective families. Yes, demand is high and spaces are limited, but each child and family matters. Our goal is to help parents learn about our school and for us to learn more about each child, ensuring that we help them find just the right school home!

WE WERE HONORED to have Oxford University professor and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Irshad Manji visit with students, faculty, and parents as part of our Parent Speaker Series. She engaged with students and faculty in grades 7-12, sharing insights on how they can foster open and honest communication with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. She emphasized the importance of moral courage in today's world, where people are often afraid to speak their minds or challenge the status quo. Later in the day, Dr. Manji and Head of School Marcel Gauthier held a fireside chat for our adult community, where she shared tangible skills to empower every one of us to make simple, yet impactful strides to create common ground and connect with people with whom we may not agree.

35 Board of Trustees and Administrative Council members participated in an all-day DEIB training facilitated by Dr. Leeno Karumanchery, co-founder of MESH/Diversity.

A Community that Values, Celebrates, and Nurtures Philanthropy and Service

Message from Director of Advancement, Katharine Atkins

Each summer as we prepare this fall Perspectives magazine and Annual Report, I find myself amazed at the number of community members who choose to make Charlotte Country Day School a philanthropic priority each year. This issue celebrates the various ways our community gives back to our school, but quite frankly, every issue of Perspectives could champion this theme!

From new junior kindergarten and kindergarten families who lean in during the first months of their time at Country Day, to families like Louis ’77 and Suzanne Bledsoe, Mary Richardson, Jim and Bev Hance, and Henrietta Palmer ’77, who have supported the Country Day Fund for over 35 years, we are so very fortunate to be part of a community that values, celebrates, and nurtures a strong culture of philanthropy and service. Whether you’ve been a loyal supporter of Country Day for decades or made a first-time gift to the school this year, we are thankful you have made our school and our students a priority.

Country Day’s strong culture of service and philanthropy started generations ago, and we are grateful to all the parents, alumni, faculty and staff, grandparents, and friends of the school who choose to invest in our students and teachers year in and year out through their annual support and engagement.

In addition to the depth of our Country Day Fund, we are indebted to some of the exceptional gifts that we received this year. First and foremost, we continue to be so grateful to Smoky and Margaret Bissell for the transformative gift of the Weddington Farm. The joy our students in all divisions have felt exploring the land, visiting with the goats, and spending time outside is palpable and

Whether you’ve been a loyal supporter of Country Day for decades or made a first-time gift to the school this year, we are thankful you have made our school and our students a priority.

profound. The energy and excitement our faculty and staff have channeled into educational and innovative possibilities will be realized over the next several years and beyond.

We also were fortunate to establish three new endowments this year that we profile on the following pages—the Jane and Carl Showalter Endowed Scholarship, The Joe Miller ’95 Memorial Scholarship, and an endowmentenhancing, generous planned gift realized from the estate of Doris and John Miller.

Beyond the philanthropic contributions we share on the following pages, we also celebrate the countless ways our Country Day community consistently shows up to connect, nurture, and care for each other.

Thank you for your continued care and partnership. You, our Country Day family, make it a joy and privilege to be a part of this special community.

Jane and Carl Showalter Surprised with Endowed Scholarship in their Honor

On March 22, Jane and Carl Showalter thought they were headed to dinner with longtime friends and fellow former Country Day parents Donny and Tricia Harrison. What they didn’t know was that over 100 dear friends and family members were gathered to announce the surprise of a lifetime. Soon after Jane and Carl walked into the room, they learned that the generous community surrounding them had created a legacy in their honor–the Jane and Carl Showalter Endowed Scholarship at Charlotte Country Day School.

Jane and Carl are very familiar faces around the Country Day community. You might even say their footprints have touched every aspect of our campuses in some capacity. Over the past 25 years, in addition to being proud parents of Country Day alums Vic ’09, Ward ’11, and Pete ’13, Carl and Jane have served in a myriad of volunteer and leadership roles: Carl served on the Board of Trustees from 2000–13, chairing the Property and Grounds Committee, and Jane served on the Boosters Club and Parents’ Association for many years, including as PA president.

Giving REPORT
— Donny Harrison

However, their impact exceeds any official volunteer leadership role or title. It’s Jane and Carl’s understated, authentic, and genuine care and compassion for their community, both at Country Day and the greater Charlotte community, that sets them apart.

When lifetime friend Patrick Hobson ’89 approached Donny Harrison and Blanton Hamilton about a special project to recognize and honor the Showalters, “we couldn’t say ‘yes’ fast enough,” says Blanton. “Carl and Jane are the epitome of selfless giving.”

“They have done so much for so many with so little recognition,” adds Donny. “In the social media world in which we live where self-promotion and lack of substance are the norm, the Showalters represent oldschool values of caring for the less fortunate and those in need without ever seeking attention. We all can learn from their example.”

Thanks to Patrick, Donny, and Blanton’s leadership, the Jane and Carl Showalter Endowment is just one of four fully endowed scholarships at Country Day. The scholarship reinforces Country Day’s steadfast commitment to providing access to educational excellence to a child regardless of their family’s financial resources.

“Many of us wanted to honor Carl and Jane,” Patrick says. “When thinking through the best way to do that, I started thinking about Carl’s experience at Savannah Country Day School and how the opportunity and the scholarship he received altered his trajectory. Not only did he meet Jane, but his education and social experience impacted his entire life. It was a no-brainer to work to create a similar opportunity at our Country Day for talented students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend our school.”

As Country Day Coach Ed Walton shares: “In life, there are those who see a need and wish it could happen and those that see a need and WILL make it happen. Jane and Carl are clearly the latter.”

Leon Levine Leaves Indelible Impact on our Community

Charlotte Country Day School mourned the passing of Leon Levine on April 5, 2023. A forward-thinking philanthropist, he along with his wife Sandra, shared their generosity with transformational gifts to Country Day. In establishing the Leon Levine Endowed Scholarship Fund in 1990, they were leaders in enhancing our efforts to increase diversity and inclusion on campus, impacting dozens of graduates over the past three decades. The naming of the Levine Center on Cannon Campus also reflects their generous spirit. In recognition of his distinguished service to our school, Mr. Levine received Country Day’s highest accolade through his induction into the Honorary Alumni Association in 1996 and served the school as a member of the Board of Visitors.

Our community is truly fortunate for the longstanding connection to Mr. Levine and the entire Levine family, and we are grateful for the impact they have made on our school.

A Lasting Legacy through a Fully Funded Endowment

In 2020, The Joe Miller ’95 Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of the late Joe Miller ’95, who lost his courageous battle with colon cancer. As of spring 2023, the endowment was fully funded thanks to generous community members, family, and friends who knew and loved Joe. That means the first recipient of The Joe Miller ’95 Memorial Scholarship will be awarded for the 2023-24 school year.

One of 36 named endowed scholarships at Country Day, The Joe Miller ’95 Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who displays many of Joe’s admirable traits: strong leadership, academic achievement, and a great love of life.

We are grateful to the many friends and family members who have made this scholarship possible. If you would like to make a gift in Joe’s name or learn more, please contact Spencer Clair ’09 at 704-943-4540 or spencer.clair@charlottecountryday.org or visit charlottecountryday.org/support/scholarship to donate directly online.

A Debt of Gratitude for Doris and John Miller

As Country Day parents and neighbors, living just across Carmel Road, Doris and John Miller built lasting memories for student-athletes during the 1970s. The Miller backyard was the place to be before home football games, as they regularly hosted cookouts for team parents, players, coaches, faculty, and staff. The sense of camaraderie generated during those gatherings left a lasting impression on the student-athletes and coaches of that era, and Doris and John remained lifelong cheerleaders and advocates for our school long after their sons John ’74 and Tommy ’79 graduated.

Doris and John were charter members of the Honorary Alumni Association, served on the Board of Visitors, and chaired the Annual Fund Grandparents division. In 2003, they were inducted into the Athletics Hall of Honor for their decades of service and devotion to athletics programming at Country Day.

In addition to their incredible service to the school, Doris and John were very thoughtful with their philanthropy. They supported the Annual Fund for a remarkable 54 consecutive years and were one of the founding families to join our Oak Society when it was established in 1982.

The couple recognized the simple and strong philanthropic potential planned giving realizes and they championed and

encouraged others to include Country Day in their estate plans. In fact, John served on the school’s first Planned Giving subcommittee of the Board of Trustees. In an issue of Perspectives, the couple said, “Our support continued even when we did not have family members here because we appreciate the school for more than what it gave our children. We continue to give because the school has brought a lot to the city of Charlotte and the surrounding area. The quality of the students turned out by Charlotte Country Day School helps the entire city.”

Forty-one years after including us in their estate plans, Doris and John’s planned gift was received by the school this December. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Millers for their sustaining and forward-thinking investment in our school community.

Doris and John’s legacy remains at cookouts before athletic games, lives on through their generosity toward our Endowment, and will always be remembered for fostering an instrumental culture of service for decades.

The Oak Society: Leave a Lasting Legacy

In 1982, Country Day established The Oak Society to recognize and honor those who include the school in their wills or estate plans. Their gifts are an important way to help ensure the future strength of our school and enable them to have an impact on Country Day beyond their lifetimes.

Currently, we have nearly 90 families or individual members of The Oak Society.

One of the most powerful philanthropic tools available to our supporters is planned giving. Though planned giving can seem mysterious and daunting, it is quite simple!

If you own possessions, you have an estate, which allows for estate planning to preserve your legacy and help secure the future of Country Day. Planned giving is a donor’s intent to contribute a major gift to an organization beyond their lifetime. These intended gifts are planned for the future and are not limited to a donor’s current wealth. Unlike the value of donations, planned giving allows for contributions donors would not typically make.

While making a lasting legacy, you will also receive benefits such as:

• tax savings

• increased income

• providing for heirs

• allowability to donate assets yet defer the time the school receives them.

Plan Your Gift Today

We’ve put together an Estate Planning Toolkit to guide you through the process of designating or restricting your planned gift.

If you have already named Country Day in your will or trust and are not listed here, please let us know so that we can ensure healthy planning and recognition in accordance with your wishes. If you prefer to remain anonymous, we will keep your plans and name in strict confidence.

Please contact Spencer Clair ’09 at 704-943-4540 or spencer.clair@charlottecountryday.org to receive your toolkit or to notify us of your planned gift.

Leo explains, “I noticed some books that Teddy was reading, and they looked really cool. He started drawing flags, and I thought it was so interesting. I wanted to join because I really know a lot about flags and I like doing it, too.”

In so many ways, Country Day is defined by the generosity of our community. In the pages ahead, read about individuals who make us stronger by connecting and building community on campus, locally, and beyond.

Teddy says his interest in flags stems from learning about his own family’s history, which includes ties to Oliver Wolcott, a signer of the U.S. Constitution. “We have a lot of history that goes back to a long time ago,” he says. “I started learning about my family and then I wanted to learn more. One thing led to another.”

Leo says, “When I was little, I was really interested in states and capitals. When I was three, I could tell you all the capitals of the states. Now, I’ve moved on in life and moved up to countries. I’ve really been interested in it since I was a child.”

Their teachers, Jeanna Prevette and Stacy Lynch, recognized that the school could support the boys’ natural interest in other countries and their flags and mentioned the duo to David Lynn, then director of International Studies. Mr. Lynn knew the perfect way Teddy and Leo could get involved with International Studies. He asked them to help sort and organize the office’s bins of tabletop flags that had become jumbled over many years of use at various events.

With their knowledge, the boys made quick work of sorting 30 years of the department’s flags by country, continent, and historical flags. For someone else, the job may have been tedious and require a few internet searches. But the boys had fun. As Leo explains, “It was interesting because I’ve never seen that many flags. It was relaxing because I was doing something with my friend, who also likes to do it.”

Both Teddy and Leo are looking forward to Middle School and the opportunity to get more involved in global studies. As for making the transition, Teddy has great advice for anyone ready to try something new: “Don’t try to be someone you’re not just to impress someone.”

Interact Club Leaders Make a Difference

in warm-up exercises and stretching, and worked closely with participating schools’ coaches to help out however needed. That could mean timing the athletes as they practiced, running alongside them, helping them get to the next activity, or being there to deliver big cheers and high fives. Working with the athletes was the easy part. The most challenging was learning how to create a Google sign-up form.

“That took some time,” laughs Joanna.

The real reward comes during the actual Spring Games in April, when Interact Club members buddy up with the same athletes they helped train.

“Working with the Special Olympians really opens your eyes and your perspective,” says Sofia. “You build bonds with the athletes and get to know them. That makes it even more special to see them do their event, because you were part of their hard work to get there.”

E“I definitely recognized the same athletes from last year. Even if they don’t always remember us, I still know I’m making a difference in their lives,” adds Joanna. “I think it’s really special that Country Day offers all students the opportunity to work with the athletes.”

EVERY UPPER SCHOOL STUDENT PARTICIPATES in Special Olympics. What you may not know is that members of Interact Club assist athletes with their training in the weeks leading up to the spring games. When Joanna Papadeas ’25 and Sofia Saye ’25 were freshmen members of the Interact Club, they were both so committed to helping out at the Saturday morning practices, they caught the attention of the senior club officers who asked them to be the leaders for the 2022–23 school year.

In the weeks leading up to Special Olympics, Joanna and Sofia organized and scheduled club members to join them on the track on Saturday mornings. They, along with other club members, led the athletes

Sofia and Joanna are also passionate about another Interact Club tradition—supporting people without homes in December by organizing a supply drive and providing meals. The girls plan to continue leading these endeavors through their senior year and hope to organize a few additional volunteer opportunities to support the greater Charlotte community.

“All the kids are just great and so supportive,” says Rick Gamereth, a Special Olympics volunteer track and field coach for more than 20 years. “Certain kids, like Sofia and Joanna, exhibit an impressive level of interaction. They really get to know the athletes and connect with them.”

Club advisor Paty Prieto adds, “Sofia and Joanna are true leaders and role models for the rest of the Interact members and in our community. I am very grateful to have found these amazing students.”

Alumnae Step Up to Empower Student Leaders

“I understand how impactful this work can be,” adds Kendall. “I wish I had the same access to past facilitators when I was in Upper School, so it was important for me to be the change I wanted to see.”

Medine acknowledges that her Country Day experience was deeply painful at times, often leaving her feeling invisible on campus. “Part of coming back to help was connecting again to that pain,” she explains. “Knowing that the vulnerability I experienced then is what some students are experiencing now…I can walk with them to transform challenging moments into opportunities to rally communal support and show up in loving, embracing ways.”

SSince the first conference more than a decade ago, the dialogue around DEIB issues has evolved both nationally and at Country Day, so today’s students walk in with more knowledge about concepts like microaggression, implicit bias, and gender identity. “These topics felt a bit taboo at the first conference and now they are the big thing in the room,” shares Jocelyn. “It was nice to see that evolution. That said, these are still tough topics, and we’re still working as a community to build confidence in having the conversations.”

SINCE THE FIRST AFFIRMING COMMUNITY

Together (ACT) Conference, established by Country Day in 2012, Upper School student leaders and their peers from area schools have organized and hosted a one-day conference for Middle School students to learn more about diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). Because of the pandemic, the conference was put on hold for a few years, and Upper School leaders were unable to attend the national Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC), which is a springboard for their conference-planning preparation.

Fortunately, three alumnae stepped up to fill that void, working with 13 Upper School DEIB leaders to help them successfully bring back the ACT Conference this past spring. Jocelyn Purdie ’14 took part in planning the very first conference 11 years ago. She, along with Kendall Addison ’18 and Medine Sekeza ’18, met with students during lunch break in the weeks leading up to the conference to mentor them and impart their knowledge gleaned as facilitators.

“I loved attending SDLC; it shaped who I am,” says Jocelyn. “Working with today’s Upper Schoolers brought back those memories of my passion to be a game changer, a life changer, a teacher. Being part of the group that started it all, it just felt right to step up and help keep the legacy going.”

“The students who are part of the ACT Conference are dedicated, brilliant, and passionate,” says Medine. “I hope our community continues to create these spaces and remains willing to challenge ourselves to sit in discomforting conversations about complex realities.”

“The ACT Conference has helped me tremendously and will continue to help students in the future,” says Kendall. “I am so proud to have been a part of this amazing program that teaches high school students what it means to be a leader and educator while younger students receive mentorship.”

All three women say their experience as ACT leaders gave them the skills to be changemakers on their college campuses and the confidence to speak and live their truth. Kendall, a graduate of Howard University, assists in providing a safety net for the disadvantaged and uninsured through her work as an analyst for a pharmacy services company. Medine, a graduate of UNC-Greensboro, is attending Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health to pursue her master’s degree with a goal of researching a love ethic theory to support her vision of everyone having equitable access to life-enhancing resources. And Jocelyn, a graduate of Queens University of Charlotte, is committed to living out DEIB every day in her role as director of Enrichment and Summer Programs at Country Day.

Ted Robinson is a Bucs Super Fan

powerful, and consistent. Guided by his wonderful parents, Toni and the late Win Robinson, Ted has served our community unlike anyone else in my time at Country Day. He is known as Country Day’s super fan, but to me, he is more than a fan. He is a joyful and calming influence, always there to be that shot of perspective on what really matters. Ted doesn’t care what the score is. He cares about being around Country Day and the people…his people. Ted is more than a fan; he is a friend and an inspiration.”

E“His smiles, hugs, and dances brighten my every day. He is the biggest community builder at this school. He makes friends with all the athletes and coaches (both from Country Day and the visiting teams). He joins the team at the end of each contest he attends to shake the hands of the opponents and is always sure to get a hug from the opposing coach. Many opposing coaches look forward to their games here because they know they will get a hug from Ted.” –

EVER SINCE HE WAS A LITTLE BOY, 39-YEAR-OLD

Ted Robinson has been a loving and powerful presence for Country Day’s student-athletes, coaches, and athletics personnel. The son of the late Win Robinson, a longtime Spanish teacher and coach, “Teddy” has Down Syndrome and limited ability to communicate with words. Yet there is no doubt about the message he sends with his big smile, enthusiastic high fives, hugs, and cheers as an honorary member of the football, basketball, and baseball programs. Additionally, for the past 18 years, Ted has come to campus every day during the season to assist the athletic trainers in filling the water and injury ice coolers for athletic practices and games. And he sets up the field for all football games.

We asked a few people who know Ted best to share their reflections on his impact.

“For three decades I have known my guy “Teddy,” interacting with him in different capacities–as a young student turned student-athlete, then his buddy while he worked during the summer at Country Day, and now as a head coach. The positive impact Ted has had on me and the rest of our school community, has been loving,

“I have so many fond memories of hanging out with TRob! His time in the locker room and on the bus as an official manager for our basketball and baseball teams. Jamming out in my car with invisible instruments (Ted can play the guitar, the drums, and the piano in one song!). His great impersonations of both Coach Witmans as he runs onto the football field before kickoff! His charming ways to get you to bring him a hotdog and a Sprite at halftime! The kindness with which he treats all living creatures! His authentic and infectious smile! His never-ending supply of Country Day T-shirts and hats! His ability to replay all the gimmicks of The Three Stooges! Ted is an example to us all about enjoying life in the moment! –Mike

“Ted is spicy shrimp Brixx pizza and all the Sprite he can drink (no ice). Ted is jogging out onto the field with Bob Witman in matching shirts and gaits. Ted is Steph’s shadow and helper. Ted is the inimitable Ted Shimmy, and running back the Stooges with Mike Dougherty, both wise guys. Ted is “Who’s the coach?” Ted is Win and Toni. Ted is routine, Ted is surprise, Ted is a knowing smile full of love and mischief. When Ted gets to heaven, all will gather around to hear his explanation of what loyalty is.” –

sessions and meetings with legislative officials. She and three others from North Carolina met with staffers from Senator Thom Tillis’ office and in person with U.S. Representative Jeff Jackson (District 14). “It was an incredible experience,” Rachel said. “I learned so much and made a lot of connections with people like me who care about this issue. I feel very fortunate that I got to talk with Mr. Jackson directly. He made time for us, really listened, and asked good questions.”

Rachel shared her personal story and advocated for the passage of the ADINA Act. “An interesting thing about some of the medicines used to treat severe allergies is that they may contain one of the top nine allergens, but it’s not listed on the label,” explains Rachel. FARE is advocating for better label laws.

SWell-versed in legislative initiatives, Rachel has attended previous Courage at Congress events, which were online due to the pandemic. In 2022, she advocated for a longer shelf life of epinephrine autoinjectors to make them more accessible for families.

SOPHOMORE RACHEL BRITTON ’26 IS A passionate advocate for food allergy awareness and research, a cause she has been immersed in since her early years. She has severe peanut and tree nut allergies that can lead to anaphylaxis, as well as allergies to other foods and antibiotics. When Rachel was younger, she sold lemonade in her neighborhood and participated in walkathons to support the national organization FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education), which seeks to enhance the lives of individuals with food allergies through education and advocacy.

Now that she is a teen, Rachel volunteers to serve as an advocate by participating in FARE’s Courage at Congress event. In March, she traveled to Washington, DC, for three days to take part in advocacy training

When Rachel was in Lower School, she says her teachers always made her feel included, and the nurses always checked on her. In all the years here, Rachel has always felt safe with her allergies on campus and during school outings. But not all school children have that sense of inclusion and protection. She and her fellow advocates in FARE are trying to pass S.121 (Protecting Children with Food Allergies Act), legislation that would help make schools safer and more inclusive.

Rachel says that the skills she has learned while a student at Country Day have been a great asset in advocating for a cause she cares about deeply. “Country Day has taught me how to do research correctly, how to present myself in a formal manner without bias or divisiveness, and how to speak clearly.”

She hopes to continue to spread awareness about food allergies both here on campus and by continuing to attend Courage at Congress. She says, “If you’re determined to fight for what you believe in, then it’s possible for you to make change.”

Appreciating the Natural World

studies. This spring, Simon worked with rising freshman Alex Levine to rebuild a weather station for installation on Weddington Farm. He hopes to use this weather and air-quality data for student studies and comparisons with the Bissell Campus data. He also co-leads the Garden Club, Green Team, and newly formed Mountain Bike Club.

As much as he does on campus, Simon says, “One of the more powerful school experiences I participate in are the sister school exchanges. They provide a tremendous opportunity for our students to grow and expand their global perspectives.” He has led exchanges to Costa Rica and Mexico, and also mentored two students in their development of an Upper School Environmental Trip to Australia in 2017, which he co-led with Donna Campbell-Patrick.

IN HIS 17 YEARS AS AN EIGHTH-GRADE SCIENCE teacher at Country Day, Simon Keilty has made a tremendous impact on Bissell Campus and its students. Whether enhancing the science curriculum, creating clubs that ignite students’ passions, or developing innovative programming, Simon is constantly working to engage a broad spectrum of students and build their curiosity about and appreciation for the natural world.

Simon, along with colleague Sarah Klingler, has developed an inquiry-based, eighth-grade science course that gives students real-world opportunities to test their ideas or hypotheses and create indelible change in their communities—whether analyzing the school’s waste stream, improving crop yield in a controlled setting, or macroinvertebrate sampling in McAlpine Creek to assess long-term water quality. The weather station he built and installed on Bissell Campus more than 15 years ago pushes data to external sites and supports atmospheric

IThis past June, he worked to further strengthen the connection between environmental awareness and global interactions. He applied for and won the World Affairs Council of Charlotte 2022-23 Council Scholar Award to fund his travel to Ghana to develop an air-quality monitoring curriculum between our sister schools (see page 10). This year’s award was supported by the Margaret Gragg Bissell Teacher Centered International Educational Endowment.

“I am now working to establish this with more of our sister schools, but I began with our new relationships in Ghana,” explains Simon. “My hope is that this program will help inform and educate each school about the factors that determine their local air quality, as well as allow teachers and students to share this data, deepening their understanding and our relationships.”

Simon is deeply appreciative of the support he receives from the school to bring innovative programming and extracurricular activities to his students. “I feel privileged to have the support of my colleagues, administrators, and parents. At every turn, from a teaching schedule that allows us time to design new course activities, funding to design new labs, and professional development opportunities, I am encouraged to brainstorm, experiment, and develop programs that give my students a phenomenal experience.”

Connecting Deeper with the School

Alumni Council, Jon spearheaded The Corners Society dedicated to honoring the city of Charlotte through philanthropic, civic, and charitable action. As an alumnus and accomplished student-athlete, Jon has a profound connection to Country Day. Lacrosse coach Brad Touma describes him as a thoughtful and quiet leader who was always very supportive of his teammates. “I witnessed firsthand Jon’s selflessness and commitment to the team. He consistently put the needs of others before his own, leading by example both on and off the field. His work ethic, integrity, and genuine care for his teammates set him apart as a remarkable leader.”

A HUMBLE COUPLE, COUNTRY DAY PARENTS

Jon ’98 and Pontea Dixon find great joy in giving back and volunteering their time. They recognize that their ability to contribute is a result of the efforts made by those who came before them, paving the way for the enriching experiences they and their children enjoy today.

While first connected through a shared love of lacrosse (both Jon and Pontea played at their respective colleges), their passion for servant leadership is evident. While working full-time, they serve together on the Board of WARD’S Foundation, not only supporting a fellow Country Day alum but a significant cause. Among other things, Pontea has served on the Board of her alma mater, The Baldwin School; co-led the Charlotte chapter of WomenGoFar, a Women’s Network at Wells Fargo where she actively participated in recruiting and mentoring; and she recently joined the Country Day Board of Trustees.

In addition to volunteering in numerous roles and sharing his time and expertise through the Country Day

AAs parents, the Dixons were eager to connect even deeper with the school and share the remarkable journey with their two daughters, Maddie (sixth grade) and Charlotte (third grade). They jumped in with full force to the school’s number-one fundraising priority, the Country Day Fund, which provides critical, unrestricted funds to the school. Through their leadership, they led the Country Day Fund through its second Fall In campaign and third year of alumni Bucs Together Days of Giving, raising awareness of the importance of participation and helping to create a culture of inclusivity and connectedness to the fundraising of the school with the entire community.

Director of the Country Day Fund Leighann Swanson, shares, “Jon and Pontea’s dedication to giving back and their genuine care for the school community shine through in everything they do. Their thoughtful approach and ability to rally others with humility and grace have made a lasting impact on our efforts to connect and engage through our fundraising and community-building efforts. They are true role models, embodying the values and spirit of Country Day.”

Deeply grateful for the role Country Day has played in their lives, Jon and Pontea engage in various initiatives to connect and build community at Country Day, from working a Big Saturday booth to serving as the Parent Education rep in a Lower School classroom. By giving back, they hope to express their sincere gratitude and contribute to their children's experiences, as well as create a nurturing environment for generations to come.

A message from the Director of the Country Day Fund, Leighann Swanson

On the following pages, we thank the 2,012 community members who supported our school during the 2022–23 fiscal year through the Country Day Fund. The Country Day Fund is the school’s numberone fundraising priority because it provides critical, unrestricted support to our operating budget. Each year, annual donors including parents, alumni, faculty and staff members, trustees, grandparents, parents of graduates, and friends make it possible for us to fulfill our mission of excellence on behalf of every student.

This year’s donors shattered records with the:

• twelfth consecutive year of 100% faculty and staff participation

• first year more than 2,000 community members participated

• highest number of parent participation in a decade

• highest number of alumni participants in history.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude!

Thank you all for your meaningful partnership and support of Country Day students and teachers through gifts to the Country Day Fund! Gifts of all sizes make a significant impact, and we are truly grateful. Go Bucs!

FALL 2023 53
Giving REPORT

Dear Alumni,

Joining the Advancement team this past year as Director of Alumni Relations has presented a new perspective to my daily interactions with students, teachers, parents, and, of course, alumni.

Showing Mark Pelshak ’98 and Andy VanDerVeer ’97 around campus during Alumni Weekend, sitting with Head of School Emeritus Margaret Gragg Bissell at the Board of Visitors luncheon, sharing lunch with Vic Josephs ’63 and reminiscing on Country Day stories, and spending time with Ed Kelly before he passed away, carried so much emotion.

This year has been an incredible journey bringing new light to what has always mattered, The Power of Our Story. I send a huge thank you to our devoted volunteers who help continue to contribute to the success of the special story we tell.

I am proud of the work we did as an Alumni Council this year! Big thanks to Matt McAulay ’01, Alumni Council president; Hayes Ashcraft ’06, Bucs Together Days of Giving chair; and Kendall Addison ’18, BIPOC Reunion chair. These are three of the many volunteers who stepped up to support the Alumni Office this past year. I also thank the entire Alumni Council for all their hard work.

Thanks to Hayes and the Council’s hard work, we surpassed our goal of 550 donors with over 580 total for Bucs Together Days of Giving in a 48-hour span! Over 300 people RSVP’d for events all throughout Alumni Weekend, including our BIPOC Reunion and the brand-new All-Alumni Happy Hour event on campus. Classmates traveled from near and far—even flying in from multiple continents—to celebrate their reunions.

However, not noted in the numbers above are the countless connections made possible through our shared Country Day history. Beach trips, weddings, showing up during a loss, offering a job to a recent college graduate—these are all the ways our community steps up day in and day out for each other!

What makes the world of education so incredible, especially at Country Day, is the foundation that connectivity provides for the job we are all here to do. Whether a new student to the ninth grade, new faculty member, international exchange student, or a legacy lifer, when you step on campus you are integrated in the Power of Country Day Connection, and it is a lifelong relationship.

We look forward to another great year ahead—we hope you will come back to campus for some of our hallmark events this year, and don’t forget to share all the great things you are doing out in the community and with each other!

Go Bucs!

Did you know that Country Day has an Athletic Hall of Honor?

That’s right! In 1998-99 and 2003-04 Country Day inducted two classes into our Athletic Hall of Honor. We are excited to announce our Athletic Hall of Honor will be reignited to honor the excellence, distinction, drive, and sportsmanship shown both on and off the field by individuals and teams who made an impact on Country Day athletics. Led by Athletic Hall of Honor Committee Chair Kelly Walton Miller ’90, Vice Co-Chairs Luke Blythe ’96 and Brad Touma, and their committee, we look forward to building a sustainable process, space, and program to inspire, connect, engage, and celebrate our athletic community. Stay tuned for more information!

Nancy Hanes Sasz ’85: Alumni Service Award Recipient

Our alumni community is full of members who remain connected to Country Day and give back in ways that make our school stronger.

The Alumni Service Award is one of three capstone awards presented to alumni who have demonstrated extraordinary service to Country Day through the Alumni Association and provided outstanding volunteer leadership in support of the Alumni Association’s mission of engaging, connecting, and celebrating service to our community.

Alumni Service Award recipients are selected based on their involvement at Country Day throughout the years. Exemplifying extraordinary service, many have served in various roles such as Alumni Council representatives, Class Reunion leaders, Country Day Fund or Bucs Together Days of Giving advocates, and Board of Trustee members. They are leaders who give exceptionally of their time, expertise, and energy to ensure we remain Bucs for Life.

Since the Alumni Service Award was created in 1994, all of our award recipients are unique in their service to Country Day and the Alumni Association. Yet there common characteristics demonstrated in our recipients—generous, selfless, leader, connector, enthusiast, dedicated, and passionate.

A gift to and for us all

In April 2023, we welcomed our 2023 Alumni Service Award recipient, Nancy

Hanes Sasz ’85. Nancy was honored during Alumni Weekend at the annual Alumni and Volunteer Distinguished Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon. Nancy has served as Parents’ Association president, alumni class agent and Reunion Committee member, Boosters Club secretary, and Advancement Committee member, with many contributions to Country Day in between.

If you know Nancy, then you know her humility and gentleness make her an

approachable volunteer; her ability to effectively use words (both spoken and written) makes her an unbelievable teacher, mentor and friend; her leadership and athleticism on the field make winning even sweeter; and her compassion and service to others make her an inspiration to us all.

Head of Middle School Warren Sepkowitz, otherwise self-proclaimed as Nancy’s Fan Club president, presented Nancy with the Alumni Service Award by sharing remarks from many other of her Fan Club members, all from various parts of her life. Warren closed by saying, “Nancy is so filled with humanity, kindness, humor, love, humility, curiosity, and resilience. Through the pain of losing her parents, her daughter (Sally Sasz ’17) and her sister, Nancy continues to teach and to amaze us all. With her humanity, service to others, vulnerability, and unending capacity to love. She is a gift to and for

Nancy is among a strong class of fellow Bucs who have also been inducted as Alumni Service Award recipients:
