IIN THESE FIRST MONTHS as Head of School, I have been repeatedly moved by the joy, pride, and deep commitment to the Mission at Country Day. This community has welcomed me with warmth and generosity, making it natural to feel at home while learning all that makes this school so special.
The best schools are built on a foundation of healthy human relationships, ones that make us feel seen and valued, that we matter, that we are loved, and that we belong. And great schools grow from the hearts of great teachers. No school is better than its teachers and staff. My belief is that anyone who works at a school can be an impactful educator, regardless of title. Like many of you, I also believe that when educators feel seen, supported, and inspired, they create the conditions where every student can thrive.
To that end, the entire community is invited to join me in a schoolwide conversation on what it means to matter and how prioritizing teacher well-being is reshaping how we think about success in our schools. Jennifer Wallace, bestselling author of Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic—and What We Can Do About It, will be visiting Country Day on November 4 to lead what I believe is the most important conversation for schools today: everyone—from faculty and staff, to parents and caregivers, to students themselves—knowing that who they are and what they do truly matters.
This issue of Perspectives features a few stories that exemplify how a culture of mattering is already present at Country Day. For example, Upper School visual arts teacher Stacy Utley shares a heartfelt message to the Class of 2025 that offers lessons for all of us on how to see and be seen. In another example, the Girls’ Varsity Track and Field team took home its third straight state title in a manner that was as much about selflessness and commitment to others as it was about athleticism.
Middle School science teacher Beth Lawing writes about her seventhgrade engineering unit as one that “is a story of both engaged learning and community,” in recounting the many ways others stepped in and up to support her. It is also a story of teachers who, when encouraged and nurtured, become inspired to challenge themselves and others, and to see new possibilities for the students to learn and grow.
This issue also celebrates the achievements of the past school year and honors those who, through their generosity, ensure that we uphold our Mission, Key Values, and Affirmation of Community. To that end, I am forever grateful to Chief Financial Officer David Mancos for stepping in for a second time as our Interim Head of School to guide Country Day. The story about the legacy of Dowd Field perfectly encapsulates how Country Day tradition, excellence, and community converge to make this a school I am proud and humbled to join.
Thank you to everyone who contributes to making Country Day a school that changes young lives for the better. I look forward to the year ahead and connecting with you!

Chosen by the students, Upper School visual arts teacher and Country Day parent Stacy Utley delivered a powerful and heartfelt speech at Senior Night, which was received with a standing ovation. Below are excerpts:
GGOOD EVENING, EVERYONE, and especially a good evening to the Class of 2025. Thank you for the privilege of allowing me to stand before you this evening and thank you for voting me for this moment. It means more than you probably know.
I’ve had the privilege of knowing many of you since you were in the fifth grade…And here’s something you might not know: when I first met you, I was pivoting in my career.
I had just stepped into independent school education, unsure of where it would lead or what kind of teacher I would become. But then I met you. You gave me a reason to root myself in this work, to keep showing up, and to grow right alongside you—even as our class evolved, with some students leaving and others joining, or returning over the years.
In many ways, your journey shaped mine, just as much as I hope I’ve had a
part in shaping yours.
So this evening, I want to talk about the Power of Pivoting—because it’s something all of us will do. A life skill that we will exercise over and over again. Right now, you’re preparing to step into a brand-new chapter. Some of you are headed to your first-choice college. Others are pursuing different paths that are equally exciting and full of potential. No matter what your plan looks like right now, know this: it’s okay if it changes.
To pivot means to shift direction, without losing your center. It’s what athletes do when the play changes. As an artist, it’s what we do when the first sketch doesn’t feel quite right. And it’s what we all do when life throws us a
curveball—and yes, life will throw you curveballs.
You’ll change majors. You’ll switch jobs. You’ll have relationships that redefine themselves. You’ll make plans...and then remake them. And that’s not failure. That’s wisdom in motion.
Pivoting takes courage, yes. But it also takes clarity— to know what matters enough to stay grounded while the world around you shifts. And I’ve watched each of you on so many occasions develop that clarity, piece by piece, year by year.
I’ve seen it when you changed your mind about what you wanted to study or found a new passion you didn’t expect. I’ve seen it when you struggled through something, only to come out stronger. And I’ve seen it in how you’ve supported one another, knowing that sometimes the best thing you can do is show up for someone else’s pivot.
So, if there’s one message I hope you carry with you beyond this day, it’s this: Don’t be afraid to pivot. Don’t be afraid to let go of one version of the future to reach for another that fits and serves you better. You are not locked into any one path. You are allowed to change, to adapt, to reinvent.
Because no matter where life takes you next, the person who walked through these school doors of Country
DON’T
SERVES YOU BETTER.
Day—the person you were, the person you’ve become, and the person you’re still discovering—that person is always with you.
Stay rooted in who you are. Stay curious. Stay open.
And when the moment comes pivot with purpose.
I want to thank you for allowing me to speak to you now as your former teacher. But I would like to ask if you will indulge me for just a moment longer, and allow me to speak to you as a dad…
On Friday, we will gather again. To celebrate you one last time. And once it is all said and done, your name has been called…You will be outside celebrating, hugging one another, taking pictures, and talking about what plans await.
You may look over for a moment and see your mom, dad, or the person who has had the responsibility of raising you, who will be staring at you.
There may be an expression of joy on their face, there may be sadness, there may be hope and optimism, or there may be no expression at all. They may be just looking at you. Don’t do the typical “teenage” thing to do and ask, “What is wrong?” I can assure you that there won’t be anything wrong at that moment.
For in that moment, we will be replaying in our minds the last 17, 18, or 19 years of your life. Every challenge or obstacle that you have overcome, every step, literally and figuratively, that we have had the privilege of being a part of.
In that moment, we will be replaying our role in your life as a parent. You see, there is no book on how to raise you. We do it with what we know and our own life experiences. We do it with the choices that we are afforded. We do the best we can. We raise you out of our love, our hopes and dreams, our fears, and the lessons that we had to learn from mistakes that we pray you don’t know about or don’t judge us about as you become adults.
Despite the expression you see, in that moment, there will be immense joy and a bit of heartbreak. Not in a bad way, but that heartbreak that comes with being a parent and watching your children grow up.
Know that in that moment and the moments moving forward, no matter what we have all gone through…that YOU have been the greatest joy of our life. Know that in that moment and moments moving forward that we love you and we are proud of you. Not because of the school you have gotten into and not because you are a Country Day graduate or Country Day Ready… but simply because you are you. That has always been more than enough.
Congratulations, Class of 2025. I’m endlessly proud of you and thank you for allowing me to speak to you this evening.
HHOW CREATIVE CAN second graders be when tasked with a group assignment to build a tower using only 10 pieces of standard paper, scissors, and tape? It turns out, very, as is often the case in the Lower School’s Design Lab.
Academic Technologist Courtney Chambers and Educational Technologist Tim Moxley create Design Lab learning experiences that allow students to develop skills in engineering, coding, robotics, and multi-media design. Mini projects allow for the application of new learning and set design challenges that empower students to creatively communicate and solve problems with empathy.
For the tower-building challenge, Mr. Moxley got the students started with a short video explaining the basic physics behind famous world towers. He then gave the students five minutes to brainstorm and five minutes to plan a design, a time when their energy and creativity was fully (and loudly) on display! They had about 20 minutes to build their tower and finished with a reflection of what they learned. There was quite a bit of competitive spirit to see who could build the tallest tower as the students brainstormed, problem-solved, collaborated, dealt with setbacks, and shared in triumphs.
It was a tangible reminder that authentic learning often comes from hands-on experiences that spark curiosity, foster teamwork, and build resilience.
TTHIS PAST YEAR, Director of International Studies Stephane Allagnon, along with support from the International Parents Group, launched Taste of Cultures at our Farm to help students develop their language skills and gain a deeper appreciation for global traditions.
“Taste of Cultures gives our students the chance to go beyond the classroom and experience language and culture in dynamic, real-world ways and creates powerful connections to the global community,” says Mr. Allagnon. “Including parents who are natives of the featured cultures strengthens the bond within our community while bringing global stories to life right here at Country Day.”
Over the past year, students took Taste of Cultures culinary journeys to these countries:
• Chile provided AP and IB Spanish students with a full Spanish immersion experience. Country Day parent Fabiola Bobo and Santiago native Chef Andres Prussing guided students through the preparation of three authentic Chilean dishes, enhancing their cultural understanding while refining their Spanish language skills.
• China focused on storytelling and culinary arts as Chinese 3, 4, and 5 students listened to Country Day parents Daoxin Lu and Hebe Xu recount their experiences of coming to the U.S.—all in Mandarin. Then, Chef George, owner of China Shuttle in Charlotte, led a hands-on cooking session featuring two traditional Chinese dishes.
• Colombia brought a vibrant blend of cultural heritage to Spanish 5 students. Country Day parent Kelly Nguyen who is Colombian, and her husband who is Vietnamese—shared how their family celebrates both cultures. Chef Gilberto Perez introduced students to two staple Colombian dishes— empanadas and arepas—through a hands-on cooking session that blended tradition with delicious flavor.
• France gave AP and IB students a linguistic immersion. Conducted entirely in French, it began with Country Day parent Murielle Hage sharing her personal journey from Lebanon and France to the U.S. French native and executive chef Laurent Pillard told how some of France’s most famous dishes were created and introduced students to French cooking techniques.
• Latin featured food from ancient Latin culture. Students made homemade pasta while discussing Latin traditions.
Food took center stage during the school’s Lunar New Year celebration as our International Parents Board, along with other volunteers, prepared and served over 1,000 handmade dumplings to Middle and Upper School students and faculty, offering a delicious taste of tradition.

IIN LATE MAY, the Varsity Girls’ Track & Field team wrote an unforgettable story of perseverance, selflessness, determination, and grit. The result? Winning their third straight North Carolina Association of Independent Schools (NCISAA) State Championship title by the narrowest of margins— just .5 points ahead of rival Providence Day.
So much contributed to this slimmest victory for the girls. Every effort mattered—from athletes who outperformed their seeds and those who leaned just a little harder at the finish line; to those timing, cheering, and coaching from the sidelines; and Bridget Siesel’s crucial 0.5-point margin in the pole vault.
But one crucial moment stands out and exemplifies the meaning of teamwork. After an injury, London CromartiePatterson decided to walk her 100m finals rather than withdraw from the race. It was an incredibly selfless act, one she did purely for the team. For such a gifted athlete, it’s tough to have that time recorded, but she understood the bigger picture—and it ended up making all the difference.
Additionally, on their way to a first-place finish, the Girls’ 4x800 team—Harless Lane, Harper Schwartz, Lily Giardi, Lindsey Kerrins—set a meet record of 9:21.52. Jada Erwin, also a first-place finisher, set a school record of 56.53 in the 400M. Congratulations also to Maya Pal, who finished first in the state in Girls’ High Jump.
“There is a lot about our content and curriculum that will ultimately be forgotten (an unfortunate truth!), but the bonds that we form with students and families are enduring.”

Stanton McCullough, Chair of the Board of Trustees
As I begin my term as Chair of the Board of Trustees, I am excited to build on Charlotte Country Day School’s 84-year history as a leader in education. As the parent of three children (one in each of our divisions!), and the husband of a proud alumna, I have witnessed first-hand the devotion of our incredible faculty and staff and the caring commitment of this community.
As a Board of Trustees member since 2019, I have had the privilege of collaborating with school leaders whose wisdom, dedication, and vision help to create a solid and sustaining learning environment for our children.
Last year, I served as Chair of the Board’s Transition Committee, which was tasked with laying the foundation for the arrival of our new Head of School, Dr. Tara Christie Kinsey. My excitement for and confidence in Dr. Kinsey’s leadership has only grown as a result of our working together during the transition. Visionary leaders have made Country Day the leading school in this region for decades. We rest on a durable foundation of excellence, one that will only grow stronger in the years ahead as Dr. Kinsey leads us to new heights.
Tangible evidence of our school’s continuing strength and leadership rests in the numbers, which you can read about on the following pages. For instance, our Admissions Office continues to process record applications; the task made even more difficult by a very good problem to have—a 97 percent reenrollment rate. Country Day’s legacy of philanthropy also remains incredibly robust. Thanks to the generosity of 1,859 community members, the Country Day Fund set a new record this year raising $2,814,590. I am deeply grateful to
everyone who makes our school a philanthropic priority.
As we head into a new era of greatness for our school, I want to especially acknowledge my predecessor Bill Zimmern ’95, along with last year’s Interim Head of School and our

long-serving CFO David Mancos, for their tremendous leadership and hard work over the past several years. They shepherded the school admirably through some challenging times and have positioned us for great things in the years to come. We all owe them a debt of gratitude. Also, I extend my sincere thanks to those individuals who rolled off the Board of Trustees at the end of the 2025 school year: Kandi Deitemeyer, Glenn Sherrill ’98, Andrew Tate, Lisa Toppin, and Jenny Ward. And I look forward to the support and insight of these incoming Trustees: Ben Braun, Kristin Sturges Hair ’95, John Scott Trotter ’95, and Wilson Sullivan.
These are exciting and transformative times for Country Day and for education more broadly. On behalf of the Board, please know that we are honored to
serve as stewards of this remarkable institution and guardians of its Mission, and we take seriously our role in helping to guide the school’s vision and strategy. With wise leadership from our Head of School, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the unwavering support of our families, I am optimistic about what we will accomplish together in the years ahead to ensure that Country Day continues to advance its mission of developing the potential of each student by fostering intellectual curiosity, principled character, ethical leadership, and a responsibility to serve.

We are fortunate to have widespread support for the school’s top giving priority, the Country Day Fund.
Tuition, which covers 78% of our annual budget, plays the largest role in our ability to serve our mission. Philanthropic support plays a critical role in augmenting tuition revenue to help fund exceptional opportunities for Country Day students.
Message from Nancy Ehringhaus, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid
TThe 2024–25 school year was a wonderful one for Country Day. The very busy admissions season included over 700 applications, and we enrolled close to 200 promising new students. As we connect more deeply to these families once they are enrolled, I ask what brought them to Country Day? The reasons are many and vary from family to family; however, at the top of most every family’s list is our strong academic program. Parents want their child challenged through their years at Country Day and to be taught by experts in their field. They see Country Day as a premier institution with a mission that embraces academic excellence, leadership, and service, and provides a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Prospective families primarily learn about us thanks to word of mouth and our strong reputation in the community, and they can dig deeper on our comprehensive website to learn how we prepare students for life. Our admissions team then shares more with families about daily life at Country Day and the impact our amazing faculty and programs have on each child. Visiting the campus for a tour brings their school research to life. Families learn quickly that Country Day is a vibrant and engaged community!
The statistics on this page are strong, and we remain in an enviable position among independent schools with high reenrollment, strong new student numbers, and the work we are doing to be a more inclusive environment. Our faculty feel supported with our Tuition Remission Policy, and the financial support for our student body is clear.
As we celebrate the success of the 2024–25 academic year, I look forward to many good months ahead with our new Head of School and the promise of all our new students and families!

Message from Brian Wise, Director of Diversity Planning
SSince the founding of the Office of Diversity Planning 27 years ago, Country Day’s students, parents, alumni, trustees, faculty, and staff have echoed a common desire: that our school cultivate a community rooted in belonging and shared respect.
In 2008, thanks to the leadership of Margaret Gragg Bissell, Head of School Emeritus, the school reframed its core value from “Diversity” to “Community.” This change reflected a deeper understanding: that diversity alone is not the end goal, but rather the foundation for something greater. We recognized that building an inclusive community meant affirming and respecting the dignity of every individual—students, faculty, and families alike. Diversity without connection is incomplete. Community moves us from counting differences to celebrating them.
Our key value of Community states: “We respect each individual, embrace diversity, and value the relationships uniting us as a school and connecting us with our local and global communities.”
This commitment is more than aspirational; it’s actionable. Guided by our Affirmation of Community, we’ve set a course that demands reflection, growth, and a willingness to evolve. Community building happens not in isolated programs but across every part of school life—curriculum, assemblies, service learning, professional development, guidance, and student life.
Charlotte Country Day School is committed to living as an authentic, inclusive community. Our pursuit of this commitment to community recognizes and affirms the richness brought by difference and discovered through commonality.
• Building and sustaining a community diverse in membership.
• Acceptance and respect for differences in age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, culture, sexual orientation, ability, physical attributes, and socioeconomic circumstances.
• Curriculum which equips students to think critically, to act respectfully, and to show sensitivity to the needs and feelings of others.
We
respect each individual, embrace diversity,
and value
the relationships uniting us as a school and connecting us with our local and global communities.
Here are a few examples of how we have built community this past year:
• Launched Gender Equity and Inclusion Committee and Professional Development.
• Created a Total Equity Model through the Board of Trustees' Community and Culture Committee.
• Graduated the most diverse senior class in Country Day’s history.
• Expanded affinity groups at the Middle and Upper Schools and achieved record attendance with the Lower School affinity group.
As we look ahead, I am excited for what is next. Our diversity strengthens us, but our unity defines us. Let’s continue walking this path—together—toward a future where every member of our community thrives.
• Curriculum which educates for the future and which prepares students for participation in local and global communities.
• Faculty and staff who know and affirm each individual child, who actively seek to understand and appreciate perspectives different from their own, and who model for their students the valuing of diversity.
• Accountability for behaviors which convey disrespect; courage and trust to acknowledge and grow from missteps and misunderstandings in our personal interactions within our diverse community.
• Inclusive school events which seek to create shared experiences, fellowship, and understanding.
• School culture and climate which allow each member to feel valued and affirmed, and thereby promote belonging and foster community ownership.
• Awareness that living in community and embracing diversity are an active process, a continual journey which engages us in personal and institutional self-assessment, reflections, and openness to growth and change.
Every corner of our Country Day campus is enriched by the time, energy, and generosity of our parents. Through the dedication of the Parents’ Association, including FOTA and
International Parents, the Boosters Club, and POCIS, parent involvement has made a real and lasting impact for Country Day students. THANK YOU!
The Parents’ Association (PA) plays a vital role in supporting the Country Day community through volunteer service and fundraising efforts, which generate significant funds that directly benefit students, faculty, staff, and the community. Additionally, more than 700 parent volunteers contribute their time as classroom and advisory parents, assist with carpooling, and support parent education events, and arts and drama receptions.
In the 2024–25 academic year, the PA generously funded $175,995 in requests to support both academic programming and faculty/staff well-being. Highlights include nationally known speaker Max Stossel, CEO of Social Awakening; faculty education and professional development; flexible seating for Lower School Modern Language classrooms; and health and wellness speakers in all divisions.
The PA also contributed $15,000 for the immediate renovation of the Upper
School Teachers’ Lounge and funded over $20,000 to celebrate employees with food and treats. At the close of the school year, the PA made a meaningful gift to the Kyong & David Mancos Professional Development Endowed Fund.
Friends of the Arts (FOTA), a parent volunteer group within the PA, enriches our fine arts programs across all grade levels by assisting with drama productions, sewing costumes, organizing art exhibitions, and supporting concerts and other arts events throughout the year. Signature initiatives in 2024–25 included the longstanding Country Day Art Pop-Up Sale, which raised nearly $20,000 to directly impact arts programming, and the Create to Donate pottery event benefitting VIA Health Partners.
welcoming and integrating international families into the school community through various events and speaker programs. The annual Fall Dinner brought together 80 community members to celebrate cultural diversity, and the International Food Hall at Big Saturday featured authentic dishes from over 20 countries prepared and served by our families.
As part of the PA, the International Parents Group plays a vital role in
Thank you to PA President Jamie Sumich and her entire board for leading an incredible year of community and impact on the school.
The Boosters Club plays a key role in promoting school spirit, supporting athletics, and fostering community connection. Nearly half of all Country Day families are Boosters Club members! The Boosters Club manages a thriving concessions program and generated
over $143,000 in sales during the 2024–25 school year. Other initiatives, such as community tailgates, Mahjong Mondays, and tennis play days, created fun, inclusive opportunities to engage families while raising funds to support student-athletes. The Boosters Club also proudly supported Special Olympics (they raised nearly $12,000 this year), and offered parent programs on sports
performance, ensuring athletics remains a vibrant part of the Country Day experience.
Thank you to Kristen Walton Wester ’93 and McNeill Wester, their entire board, members, and volunteers for their support!
People of Color in Independent Schools (POCIS) supports families of color, the school’s DEIB initiatives, and serves as a space for unity and belonging. POCIS actively seeks opportunities to strengthen our community, ensuring full participation and inclusion for everyone.
Key activities for the 2024–25 year included a fall book club read of Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, which sparked deep conversations and reflections. Additionally, POCIS community members showed tremendous presence and support at cornerstone events such as the annual Back-to-School Cookout, Holiday Potluck, and the Lower School Buccaneers' Choice Dance. The proceeds from the dance enabled POCIS to make a substantial
contribution toward supporting the Mark E. Reed Scholarship.
Thank you to Co-Chairs Mia Jordan and Esther Destin for your leadership and commitment.
Message from Katharine Atkins, Director of Advancement
As I write this message, summer is in full swing at Country Day.
I look out my window from the second floor of the Levine Center and see happy campers off to Fun with Phonics, Bucs Ballers, and Dino Discovery. Outside, our phenomenal Plant Operations and Grounds staff are re-landscaping our entrance and putting the final touches on the new Touma Stadium at Dowd Field. Student-athletes are on the fields practicing and honing their skills with summer workouts led by dedicated coaches.
Just down the hall, fourth-grade teachers are in the conference room perfecting their craft with summer professional development. And a handful of other faculty and staff are currently benefiting from new experiences thanks to the generosity of families who fund travel and sabbatical grants.
The Marketing and Communications team is putting the final touches on the Parent Directory and this very issue of Perspectives, and the Division Heads are reviewing and updating their Student and Parent Handbooks.
Bucs on the Alumni Council are busy planning for the year ahead, and our Advancement team wraps up the 2024–25 fiscal year as we finalize gift entry and reporting.
And this is just a glimpse of summer at Country Day—a school that never slows down no matter the season.
Adults and students alike are all in for Country Day, giving themselves to a busy rhythm of work, play, competition, and joyful learning in an environment that supports this cadence.
None of this would be possible without our amazingly supportive community that partners with the school every step of the way day in and day out.
From incredible volunteers to generous donors, to alumni near and far, we do not take for granted that the myriad resources and opportunities made available for our students and teachers is fueled by our culture of philanthropy and support.
On the following pages, it is my distinct honor to recognize the many ways our community members make Country Day a priority. We recognize and value our culture of philanthropy and support.
Whether you are a long-time supporter, a recent graduate, or a grandparent cheering from afar, you are part of the Country Day story, and we are honored and grateful. Thank you!
From incredible volunteers to generous donors, to alumni near and far, we do not take for granted that the myriad resources and opportunities made available for our students and teachers is fueled by our culture of philanthropy and support.
Sincerely,
Katharine Atkins Director of Advancement

Dowd Field is more than a place to play— it’s where tradition, excellence, and community converge. For over 40 years, Dowd Field has been a space where student-athletes grow, teams come together, and coaches help shape the spirit and values of the school. Across 98 combined seasons, more than 2,035 student-athletes have stepped onto its grass—now turf—each leaving their mark. It’s the field where teamwork,
integrity, sportsmanship, and service take root, and where 24 North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) state championship teams have practiced and competed. It’s also the backdrop for countless memories that are tied to Country Day legends,
like Coach Brad Touma, who was honored in April at the dedication of Touma Stadium at Dowd Field.
FOLLOW THE TIMELINE to relive championship moments, powerful traditions, and evolving infrastructure on Dowd Field—a timeless symbol of pride and purpose for generations of Buccaneers.
Dowd Field is dedicated to the memory of Sally C. Dowd, who paved the way for girls’ athletics in the 1970s. Since then, field hockey has won 15 NCISAA state championship titles and seven runner-up titles.
Brad Touma joined Country Day as an assistant lacrosse coach and history teacher. In 1988, he took over as head coach. Over the years, he has earned numerous accolades, including the Carl Bolick Coach’s Award in 1991 and 1996. He was inducted into the USA Lacrosse North Carolina Chapter Hall of Fame in 2008 and the National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame in 2023.
AS OF JUNE 2025, COACH TOUMA’S IMPRESSIVE CAREER STATISTICS INCLUDE:
1,000+ players
9 NCISAA state championships
18 conference titles
162 All-Conference Selections
160 All-State Selections
31 All-Americans
14 players served in the U.S. military, including 3 Navy Seals
43 players awarded the rank of Eagle Scout “Dowd Field was where I grew from a nervous freshman on varsity into a senior captain leading my team. It taught me resilience, leadership, and how to stay present, even when life outside of field hockey felt overwhelming or challenging. I learned to set aside stress, focus on where my feet were, and show up for the people around me. My favorite memory will always be winning the state championship my sophomore year on Dowd Field, an unforgettable moment that showed me what’s possible through hard work, consistency, and confidence.”
Girls’ Lacrosse began as a club sport, originally playing on Blythe Field. A varsity team was established in 2006, though the NCISAA did not officially sanction the sport until 2009. Since then, the program has flourished, earning eight state championships and six state runner-up titles. In 2020, Girls’ Lacrosse made the move to Dowd Field, marking a new chapter in its continued tradition of excellence.
Coach Touma introduced the mantra WILL POWER in honor of his late student-athlete Will Froelich ’09. Alongside “Faith, Family, Academics, Lacrosse,” WILL POWER continues to serve as a guiding force and foundational pillar of the lacrosse program today.
“Coaching on Dowd Field, I’ve watched young student-athletes grow in confidence, character, and connection. The epic wins and tough losses are unforgettable, but the moments between—the laughter, the lessons, the unity—are what make this field truly special and where our teams become a family. The memories made will last a lifetime, and it is an honor to be a part of it.”
Carter Williams ’17, Assistant Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse Coach, Assistant Junior Varsity Field Hockey Coach, and Third-Grade Assistant Teacher
In consecutive games on Dowd Field, both the Varsity Boys’ and Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse teams won NCISAA state championship titles.
With support from the Dowd, Showalter, and Hamrick families, Dowd Field was refurbished with new entryways and landscaping to strengthen the sense of community and experience for parents and fans supporting Bucs’ athletes.
Dowd Field receives updates, including a new turf surface and state-of-the-art digital scoreboard, made possible by a generous gift from an alumni donation.

On April 26, alumni, families, and current students gathered to celebrate the official dedication of Touma Stadium at Dowd Field, honoring Coach Touma’s extraordinary 37-year legacy of leadership, mentorship, and impact on generations of studentathletes. The heart of boys’ and girls’ lacrosse and field hockey, the stadium now bears his name, cementing his role in shaping the school’s athletic and character-driven tradition.
The dedication ceremony, following the annual alumni lacrosse game, featured opening remarks by MC Belk Pilon ’92, who shared, “Coach Touma is a legend who built more than a lacrosse program— he built a legacy of faith, family, and purpose, shaping generations of young men with a stick in one hand, a book in the other, and a lifetime of inspiration in between.”
While current players held Touma Stadium renderings, Patrick Hobson ’89 and George Hodgin ’05 shared heartfelt reflections on Coach Touma’s influence while video tributes from fellow alumni played on the scoreboard, each one underscoring the life lessons and lasting gratitude Coach Touma inspired.
Now home to Touma Stadium, the iconic Dowd Field continues to be a powerful symbol of connection, character, and community—and of a coach whose legacy continues to inspire, lead, and unite generations of Bucs.
We extend a very special thank you to those who made Touma Stadium at Dowd Field possible through their generosity.

By Beth Lawing, Seventh-Grade Science Teacher
It was the last week of May, and a hush fell over the Bissell Campus Courtyard as our seventh graders prepared for the ultimate test of their engineering designs. Weeks of researching, sketching prototypes, and carefully constructing multiple helmet models had led up to this moment. Their faces were a mix of nervous anticipation and eager excitement as their helmet designs were put to the test: Protect a person’s “brain” from concussion after an eight-foot drop.
While this culminating event was a highlight for the students, it wouldn’t have had such a significant impact without the many adults in our community who lent their support. As a teacher and advisor, I am always telling my students that Country Day is a “Community of Caring.” From start to finish, this is a story of both engaged learning and community.
The journey to our Helmet Drop began in the spring of 2024, when my teaching partner, Science Department Chair Janice Palmer, and I learned about an engineering unit called “Put a Lid on It,”
developed by the Museum of Science (MOS) in Boston. I drafted a grant proposal to attend MOS’s engineering conference for Middle School teachers, Parents’ Association graciously allocated the funds. Meanwhile, Janice spoke with Middle School parent Dr. Amy McLaughlin, an ER physician, who enthusiastically agreed to lead a presentation about the brain.
At the conference, not only did we discover hands-on engineering activities to implement in our classrooms, but we also made connections with other STEM leaders, who gave us terrific ideas for award-winning children’s books and informative Smithsonian videos to incorporate into our engineering lessons. After each day of teacher training, Janice and I walked around the heart of Boston while strategizing about the scope and sequence of the unit, becoming even better friends with each step. We asked ourselves many questions. What if we got different types of helmets for the kids to examine? What if we invited more guest
Students tested their design engineering skills with an eight-foot helmet drop.
Energized and excited, upon our return, we called for reinforcement from our amazing Community of Caring. Athletic Director Masanori Toguchi helped us secure football, baseball, and lacrosse helmets to examine. Seventh-grade parents shared their construction helmets and ice hockey helmets. People were so interested in helping us that I decided to dream bigger. I contacted Director of Alumni Relations (and my former student) Drew Witman ’06 to ask whether he thought Alumnus of the Year and reigning Daytona 500 champion William Byron ’16 might loan us a NASCAR helmet.
As we collaborated, I could tell the engineering gears were spinning in Drew’s head, too. He mentioned that we had neurosurgeons in the community who he thought would enjoy being guest speakers. Drew reached out to Dr. Harrison Farber ’08 at Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine, who happily agreed to come and speak to our seventh graders about his life as a brain surgeon.
Dr. McLaughlin kicked things off by creatively turning the seventh graders into fourth-year medical students in her simulation of life as an ER doctor treating a young head injury patient—
This is the helmet William Byron ’16 wore to win the 2024 Daytona 500!
first as if he were wearing a helmet and then if he were not. Dr. McLaughlin also taught the students what to look for in a CT scan, and they quickly realized that brains begin to bleed, and the hemispheres of the brain are not symmetrical following a head trauma without a helmet.
The next day, Middle School Athletic Trainer Jason Farmer led a discussion about concussions, which are a very real part of seventh-grade life. Interestingly, the highest number of sustained concussions occur in our population during recess time or off-campus, not during structured school practices or school competitions.
Lastly, Dr. Farber shared his path to becoming a neurosurgeon. He started shadowing doctors when he was in Upper School at Country Day, and he encouraged the students, regardless of their interests, to seek out an internship with experts once they were in high school. Dr. Farber also explained how identifying a patient’s “elegant regions of the brain” helps him know where to cut and why his patients are still awake during brain surgery.
And yes, William Byron did lend us one of his NASCAR helmets. I envisioned William picking up a spare from his garage floor, so you can imagine my total shock when Drew presented me with the helmet that William wore during the Daytona 500! Needless to say, the students felt so special to
“From designing medicine coolers and rockets to creating a prototype rover to land a payload safely on Mars, we are continuously updating engineering challenges like our newest addition, ‘Put A Lid On It.’”
Janice Palmer, Middle School Science Department Chair
• Since 2016, the Middle School engineering curriculum has taught students engineering design-thinking and the skills to design, build, and test prototypes.
• Engineering skills and the engineering design process are scaffolded in grades 5–8 to build on previous knowledge and experiences.
• Rooted in real-world problem-solving, engineering practices are blended with scientific concepts to develop practical, innovative solutions.
• By integrating engineering into science, students use their knowledge to inform design choices, analyze prototype performance, and make data-driven improvements. This deepens their understanding of how scientific reasoning and engineering work hand in hand.
• Students strengthen critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration while gaining real-world insight into the connection between science and engineering.
have access to this helmet. They were amazed at the lightness and how much padding he needed to wear while driving more than 130 miles per hour.
With brain research and helmet analysis under their belts, the students were ready to become teams of biomedical engineers who could plan, design, and build! As a test run, each engineering group examined materials they could use to create a mini helmet that would protect a “small skull filled with brains” (actually, a dried jumbo pasta shell filled with potato flakes, sand, and warm water). The teams perfected thumbnail sketches, talked through design matrices, and created team sketches. When their prototypes were ready, they dropped their Pasta Helmet Heads from five feet onto a concrete floor and examined the damage.
With learnings from the prototypes, the students spent their last week as seventh graders going back through the engineering design process to build life-sized helmets—this time with a budget of $10 in materials, which included foil trays, bubble wrap, quilt batting, pipe cleaners, and more. Working with budget and time constraints gave the project a real-world feel and required the teams to work even harder on their collaboration skills. The students were ready for the final helmet drop, and Janice and I were thankful for one more adult who helped make this unit such a success.
Middle School Maintenance Supervisor Richard Marsh, using high-jump equipment, creatively rigged a contraption that could handle the specifications required for our engineering capstone project: the eight-foot Helmet Drop. Team by team, the students strapped their helmets to a mannequin head that hung upside down—the variety of designs stretched from no-nonsense to whimsical. Inside each helmet, we taped two red paintballs
to simulate the brain. A countdown ensued, and the mannequin’s head plummeted toward the concrete! Would their helmets (and their brains) be able to sustain such a punishing impact?
When their helmets did absorb the impact successfully, the students enthusiastically celebrated with each other. Next, they discussed iterations, such as changing the design of their helmet strap, which they could make to improve their overall helmet design.
After her engineering team’s Helmet Drop, Sophia Parikh remarked, “I love how instead of an end-of-unit test, we had a creative project that let us express all our unique ways of processing and applying the information we learned. By far, this has been my favorite unit!!”
This unit reminded us that students love many things about engineering. They love problem-solving. They love the independence that engineering projects give them. From design conception to materials testing, they are the ones calling the shots for how to build their prototypes. They love handling manipulatives and collaborating as their
creative sparks fly. And they love having guest speakers come and talk to them about the real world.
Thanks to our Community of Caring, our seventh graders have learned for themselves why it is critical to wear a helmet in the right situations to reduce the chances of brain injuries and fatalities. Next time they go for a bike ride or sign up for a contact sport, we hope they will Put a Lid on It!
Country Day’s Upper School math program blends technology, creativity, and collaboration to prepare students for a data-driven world.

From Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered assessment tools and inquiry-based exploration to hands-on projects and real-world problem-solving, Upper School math teachers are using creativity and innovation to make math more relevant and engaging for all learners. Importantly, they are also a cohesive team of educators who collaborate frequently to design curriculum. The strong working relationships within the math department fuel teachers to
continually tweak and enhance their lesson plans to create ever-improving and engaging classroom experiences. They also regularly design practical applications to pair with students’ science classes, such as using logistical models in Calculus to relate to topics in AP Environmental Science.
Here’s a look at a few ways the Upper School’s dynamic math curriculum fosters critical-thinking skills and prepares students to navigate a data-driven future.
Not surprisingly, Upper School math teachers are thoughtfully integrating AI into their curricula to enhance student engagement and personalize learning. For instance, for her Algebra 2 course, Shanel Hine used AI to help design a hands-on linear regression lab in which students launched paper airplanes with varying weights and then modeled the relationship between weight and flight distance. For AP Statistics, she used AI to help students prepare for the AP exam by reviewing inference procedures and generating custom practice problems based on uploaded materials.
Teachers also use AI-powered platforms like Wayground (formerly Quizizz) to develop custom practice questions, assess student progress, and provide realtime feedback with hints and explanations. Students also take initiative by using AI tools to review independently, such as uploading problems to receive similar examples with step-by-step solutions. Additionally, AI has been used to create visual aids like summary charts, making abstract concepts more accessible.
“Wayground AI has helped us better analyze student progress and identify skills that need remediation,” says Laura Trojan, Upper School Math Department chair. “It also gives students immediate hints and explanations, which makes their practice more meaningful. Across courses, AI helps teachers personalize instruction and foster a deeper understanding of math.”

When it comes to thinking up a memorable way for students in Pre-Calculus to grasp the difference between linear growth and exponential growth, teachers Stacy Heintschel and Allyson Singh ’14 have discovered you can’t go wrong with a zombie apocalypse simulation.
The teachers serve as patient zero and “infect” their students via either strain A, in which the zombie infects three people each, but the new zombies can’t infect others (linear); or strain B, in which each day every zombie infects three new people (exponential). Over the course of the lesson, students make predictions, write and interpret equations, create and analyze data tables, and graph both functions to visually compare the rate of change.
This activity serves as a reinforcement for the students and deepens their understanding,” explains Mrs. Heintschel. “It also allows them to clearly compare exponential and linear growth in a real-world context. The hands-on simulation makes the abstract concepts more tangible and provides a natural bridge into analyzing equations, interpreting graphs, and discussing growth patterns more formally.”
“While most students know that exponential growth will beat out linear over time, they are often surprised to see that linear is winning at first,” explains Mrs. Singh. “The J-shaped curve they graph gives them a visual comparison of how exponential growth quickly outpaces linear growth and often leads to insightful discussions surrounding real-world implications, such as population growth or virus spread.”
Best of all, students say they like the zombie simulation because it helps them to experience and visualize the concepts they are learning, and it gets them moving around and interacting with their classmates.
In Geometry, students connect abstract concepts to real-life contexts through an engaging, weeklong assignment called Flip or Flop. Working with an assigned partner, they are tasked with working out the formulas to profitably renovate and re-sell a ranch-style house in need of new flooring, paint, and appliances. And the floor plan is a little challenging in that there is an angled wall and a circular wall. By calculating perimeter and area using proper formulas they reinforce their understanding beyond abstract worksheets and also get to take creative ownership of their “house.”
“We give them a lot of space to be creative,” explains math teacher Allison Niekras. “They use the Home
Depot website to select their flooring, appliances, and paint, and must make real-world decisions to stay within budget. Some students can be very passionate about their design aesthetic and while that’s not necessary to getting the math right, it helps students practice their persuasion and collaboration skills.”
The accuracy of their calculations, how well they apply area and perimeter concepts to real-world design choices, and their ability to justify selections based on measurements all go into assessing how well they completed the project. The group partners also create a PowerPoint presentation to share their calculations and design choices with the class. “As a math teacher, I enjoy seeing how creative the students can get with this project,” says Mrs. Niekras. “Some students challenge themselves to spend as little as possible, while others come up with inventive scenarios. My favorite is a group that incorporated a story about Batman tracking down a nemesis, then buying and renovating the house.”
While students say this is their favorite activity of the year, Mrs. Niekras and her teaching partner Mrs. Heintschel continue to update and tweak the assignment. For instance, over the years they have adjusted their language from master bedroom to primary bedroom and adjusted housing costs and budgets to keep up with current standards.
Finally, at the end of their presentations, students reflect on whether or not flipping a house is worth it, which often sparks interesting discussion about real estate, budgeting, and investment decisions.
You don’t often think of 4,000-word research papers when you think of high school math. Yet that’s what International Baccalaureate (IB) students produce as their capstone math project. This Internal Assessment (IA) challenges students to explore a topic of interest and apply mathematical concepts, analyze data, model phenomena, and understand patterns in a novel or real-world context beyond routine classroom problems.
Students are expected to take initiative, plan, investigate, and reflect independently,” explains Mrs. Trojan. “And, as with any research paper, they must communicate mathematical ideas clearly and logically using appropriate notation, representations, and explanations. The IA experience is challenging because it is aligned with the kind of academic writing expected in college, but it can also be a lot of fun because students can choose a topic they want to explore.”

For instance, this year one student studied how various measurements of breast cancer tumors can be modeled depending on whether the tumor is malignant or benign. Another student used statistical inference methods to determine whether the shuffle mode in Spotify is truly random (evidence suggests it is not.)
Kensie Bush ’25 is an avid baseball fan; it’s a passion she shares with her father, who played minor league baseball. For her paper, Stealing Second, Kensie investigated the mathematics behind one of baseball’s most electrifying plays: the stolen base. While stealing a base is often a split-second decision by players, Kensie set out to determine what measurable factors, specifically runner speed, catcher throw time, and runner leadoff distance, influence the likelihood of a successful steal to second base. Through data-driven modeling and real 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) statistics, she explored the physical and strategic dynamics of base stealing. Kensie began by identifying her primary focus: analyzing how runner speed and leadoff distance affect a player’s chance of stealing second base successfully.
Kensie Bush ’25 (far right) attends many ball games with her father and sister.
average time it takes for a catcher to throw to second.
Through the research process, Kensie realized she had a missing variable in the model in that it assumes the runner starts moving only after the ball reaches the catcher. Runners often begin stealing just before or as the pitcher delivers the ball. By factoring in pitch time (≈0.5 seconds)—the time it takes for the ball to travel from pitcher to catcher— her resulting speed fell within the range of real MLB player speeds, validating why many runners successfully steal second base.
To assess whether a player’s speed is sufficient to beat the throw to second base, Kensie also calculated the
Kensie’s exploration illustrated how mathematical modeling can demystify athletic performance.

A WEEKEND OF & ALUMNI WEEKEND 2025 2025 2025
Thispast April, Bucs spirit came home—literally—as all reunion class parties were held on campus for the first time in Alumni Weekend history. From joyful reunions to record-breaking generosity, the 2025 Alumni Weekend brought out the very best of the Country Day community.
The festivities officially kicked off on Wednesday, April 23, with the annual alumni Bucs Together Days of Giving
For the sixth consecutive year, alumni volunteers and donors showed their Bucs pride by giving generously to the Country Day Fund in honor of the teachers, coaches, and mentors who shaped their lives.
Led by Ike Belk ’04 and Megan Schlernitzauer ’14, an incredible 672 donors raised a record-breaking $237,274 during the 42-hour campaign. Gifts to the Country Day Fund provide critical resources that enhance every aspect of the Country Day experience. Even more inspiring, 146 different teachers, coaches, and staff, past and present, were honored! Thank you to everyone who made gifts this Bucs Together Days! Your gifts are already at work supporting academic innovation, teacher excellence, athletics, the arts, and more.
The Distinguished Service Legacy Luncheon remains one of Alumni Weekend’s most treasured traditions, uniting retired and longtime faculty and staff, beloved alumni, and valued friends of the school. Each year, the luncheon serves as the setting for the presentation of the Frank Dowd IV ’74 Alumni Service Award—honoring an individual whose contributions have left a lasting impact on the Country Day community. Frank shared the following during the presentation of this distinguished award: “What stands out about our volunteer community as a whole at Country Day is that it’s driven by a deep commitment to our mission. It’s about supporting our entire community—educating and nurturing our children and their families. For over 18 years, Kristin has embodied this spirit wholeheartedly, giving her heart to everything she’s done. Kristin, thank you for humbly allowing us the opportunity to honor you today.
“Some might say Kristin’s dedication to Country Day runs in the family. As a lifer, she not only embraced the values of this school but also carried forward a legacy of service that was inspired by her late mother Claudia Sturges. Kristin followed in her mother’s footsteps, serving as President of the Parents’ Association—33 years after her mother did the same, and both did so with distinction.”
“Country Day is an institution, but it is also a living and breathing thing. While the facilities are amazing and the grounds are stunningly beautiful, these are not what make it so special. They are certainly pieces of the puzzle, but the true cornerstone pieces are, of course, the people. And they are the WHY that I have committed so much time to this special place.”
–Kristin Sturges Hair ’95
Saturday of Alumni Weekend was full of Bucs pride, kicking off with spirited support for our traditional athletics events, including baseball, lacrosse, tennis, and soccer. The lacrosse community gathered in a special show of appreciation for longtime coach Brad Touma at the official dedication of the Touma Stadium at Dowd Field. See full story about the memorable event on page 24.
In a new and meaningful milestone, all reunion class parties were held on campus for the first time, making the celebrations even more personal and connected to the
That evening, the annual BIPOC Alumni Reunion took place in the Belk Learning Center, bringing together BIPOC alumni, faculty, and staff for an evening of connection and community. The event focused on celebrating shared experiences and strengthening the bonds within Country Day’s BIPOC alumni network.
Country Day experience. Classes ending in ’5s and ’0s enjoyed thoughtfully planned gatherings in familiar settings, bringing added warmth and nostalgia to the weekend.
From the Distinguished Service Legacy Luncheon to the record-breaking Bucs Together Days of Giving and every event in between, Alumni Weekend 2025 was a powerful testament to the strength, spirit, and lasting connections of the Country Day community. Thank you to the many volunteers and attendees, especially Alumni Council President Hayes Ashcraft ’06 and Alumni Weekend Chair Clary Hilliard Gray ’00, who made this unforgettable weekend possible.
