Message from the Head of School

I

N 2007, my predecessor, Margaret Gragg Bissell, created a special School Culture and Climate Committee that challenged us to create the ideal learning community in order to best prepare our students for the future. The result, in one of her last acts of leadership before retirement (in a long career of impactful leadership for Country Day), was the creation of our Affirmation of Community and the revision of our mission statement to include the “fostering of intellectual curiosity, principled character, ethical leadership, and a responsibility to serve.”

In 2011, as part of the Strategic Plan process, in which we asked the entire Country Day community to share their priorities for the future, preparing students to lead and thrive in a changing world rose to the top as one of our four shared visions. As a community, we recognize that leadership isn’t about titles, but rather about giving our students the skills to confidently navigate a fast-changing world so that they are poised to share their voice and make a lasting impact on others and the world. It’s about leading with heart and it’s about leading with purpose.

This issue of Perspectives is dedicated to examining some of the ways we instill ethical leadership in our students, both formally and informally, and through leadership by example. Social intelligence and communication skills—both as a contributor and a listener—are key to successful leadership. We explore the value of teaching civil discourse, and how we go about that in age-appropriate ways.

More formally, student-athletes are learning how to put leadership theory immediately into practice through participation in the Robert C. Spring Sports Round-Up

Bucs Win Girls’ Lacrosse, Boys’ Tennis State Titles

F

OR THE SECOND straight year, the Country Day girls’ lacrosse and boys’ tennis teams wrapped up an outstanding year of Buccaneer athletics by bringing home North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association state championships.

The girls’ lacrosse team held off conference rival Charlotte Latin’s secondhalf surge, winning 11-10 for the team’s second straight state championship game win over the Hawks and its sixth straight state title overall. The boys’ tennis team also won in dramatic fashion, coming back from a 2-1 deficit following the three doubles matches and ultimately defeating Durham Academy, 5-3. The Bucs track and field teams rounded out a successful season, with the boys finishing 6

fourth in the team standings at the NCISAA 3A championship meet and the girls earning a tie for second place, thanks in part to a state title in the 4x200 relay.

Girls’ Lacrosse Country Day shut out the Hawks in the first half, enjoying an 8-0 lead at the break. After falling behind 11-2 with just over 20 minutes to play, the Hawks steadily chipped away at the deficit, mounting a slow and steady 8-0 run and narrowing the gap to 11-10 with 4:19 to play. The Bucs held strong over the final minutes to hold on for the win.

Sadie Charles Calame ’19 led the attack with four goals for the Bucs, with Ellen Ambler Moseley ’18, Thea Reddin ’18, and Taylor Riley ’19 adding two apiece.

The title was the Bucs’ eighth overall.

Country Day has appeared in every state championship game since 2009, the first year the NCISAA officially sanctioned the sport.

“This achievement is what happens when you focus only on the team, want to win for no one but the team, and look at each other and know that—no matter their role—every single team member on that field is an integral piece of the whole puzzle,” said head coach, Kristy Boyles. “I knew that they would get the job done because wanting to succeed for the teammate standing next to you is an incredibly strong mindset. I could not be more proud of our senior leadership and this crew of incredible student-athletes.

We are honored to coach them.”

Boys’ Tennis Durham Academy got off to a hot start, taking the top two doubles lines to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles. Despite dropping line two, the Bucs surged ahead in singles, with Luke McClelland ’18, Bennett Turner ’20, and Kaelan van Cleeff ’21 winning at lines one, three, and four, respectively. Johnny Bingham ’20 handled the pressure well at line five, clinching the state title for the Bucs with a 6-1, 4-6, (10-6) victory.

It was the 18th state title for Country Day boys’ tennis, the 17th under current head coach Calvin Davis.

“This team has worked hard this season learning how to fight for each other and how to never give up,” Davis said. “At each position, we have had tough-fought matches and those have taught us perseverance. Today, that lesson paid off, and we stepped up and answered the challenge.”

Track & Field A year after the Bucs finished third in girls’ and sixth in boys’ track and field, the teams moved up the leaderboard in 2018, with the girls finishing in a tie for second place and the boys in fourth. The highlight of the meet for the Bucs was the girls’ 4x200 relay of Kaia Putman ’21, Caroline Kosmicki ’18, Sarah Martin ’20, and Clarkson Graham ’20, who won the race over Forsyth Country Day by over a second, turning in a 1:47.05.

Several Country Day athletes finished with runner-up performances, including Zoe Weatherington ’19 (discus, shot put), Jack Stajos ’20 (discus, shot put), the girls’ 4x800 relay team, and the boys’ 4x200 relay team. The girls had 14

scoring performances in 12 different events, while the boys had 11 scoring performances over 9 different events.

The girls had their highest team finish since also finishing second in 2007, while the boys had their best state meet since 2012, when they won the class 3A state title. This was the first year since 2009 that both the Country Day boys and girls finished in the top five in the state.

Every Country Day team participated in the NCISAA postseason, either as a team or as individuals.

• Baseball advanced to the state semifinals for the second time in three years before falling to top seed and eventual state champion Wesleyan Christian.

• Boys’ Golf sent Timmy Gannon ’21 and Blake Cunningham ’19 to the state championship meet.

• Boys’ Lacrosse reached the state semifinals for the sixth straight year before falling to top seed and eventual state champion Christ School.

• Girls’ Soccer earned its second straight state playoff appearance and its first

state quarterfinal appearance since 2014.

• Softball made its first state playoff appearance since 2011 and earned its first state playoff win since 2006.

“Between the repeat championships for our girls’ lacrosse and boys’ tennis teams and impressive performances at the state level across the board, it was the best all-around finish to a season we’ve seen here in quite a while. Hats off to our student-athletes, coaches, and support staff for all the hard work they put in to make this possible,” said Abe Wehmiller, director of athletics.

QUESTIONS for Bill Mulcahy

Q: A:

What attracted you to this position at Country Day?

While many things appealed to me about Country Day—the unwavering focus on what’s best for students, the joy I witnessed in the Lower School classrooms, the strength and balance of the academic program—the palpable sense of community is what attracted me most.

Country Day is an infectiously warm, positive place.

Q: A:

What do you like most about Charlotte so far?

I’m actually fairly familiar with

Charlotte, as my wife is a native Charlottean (and a graduate of a rival school that shall remain unnamed).

We are enjoying living closer to family and continue to appreciate the friendliness of all of the people we have met!

Bill Mulcahy, who joined Country Day in July to lead our Lower School, previously served as head of Lower School for six years at Fairfield Country Day in Connecticut. Prior experience as a department chair and lead teacher includes service at Langley School, in Virginia, and Saint Anne’s School of Annapolis. Bill graduated from The Pingry School. He earned a Bachelor's degree in sociology from Hamilton College, and his master’s in education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Bill brings a valuable and broad set of educational experiences to Country Day. At Fairfield Country Day, he brought a renewed strength and focus to the math curriculum, co-chaired a strategic planning committee on educational trends and innovation, taught computer programming, and piloted a baseline assessment test to measure noncognitive skill development in conjunction with Harvard professors, to name just a few of his accomplishments.

Bill and his wife, Lauren, have two sons who are also excited to join the Lower School.

Q: A:

Who was your most influential teacher?

I have been fortunate to have many

incredible teachers at every level of my schooling. My first grade teacher, Mrs. Carol Cox, was my most influential.

She ignited a love of books and learning in me that still remains to this day. As a teacher, I strived to instill that love of learning in my students, and as an administrator, I want to support teachers in a way that allows them to create a kind of joy for learning in their classrooms that students carry with them through high school, college, and beyond.

Q: A:

What is your guilty pleasure?

Sweets! I have always had a sweet

tooth and love just about any treat that I can get my hands on. Ice cream and chocolate chip cookies are my favorite!

Q: A:

UNC or Duke?

A former camper of mine during my

days as a camp counselor grew up to be a standout basketball player at NC State, so they have always been my team of choice in the ACC. How’s that for diplomatic?

“We have master teachers at Country Day who run their classrooms incredibly well.”

This is one of several observations that Mr. Mulcahy made in a letter home to parents recapping his “day as a thirdgrade student” in late September.

An English Teacher’s Journey Through

Civil Rights Tragedies and Triumphs

EDITOR’S NOTE: Over the course of four days in early July, Upper School teachers learned more about the history of America’s struggle with civil rights and social justice as they traveled to sites in Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, Tuskegee, and Birmingham. The immersive experience, organized

by Tanya Andrysiak, director of studies, with assistance from the Office of Diversity Planning, is designed to enable conversation about history and current issues within the faculty, and influence curriculum across departments.

T

HE DOCENT’S voice is impassive: “Please have a seat at a stool.

Put this headset on. Place your palms flat on the marked places on the counter in front of you. Close your eyes.”

And it begins. A tumult of angry voices rushes in like a roiling river, and I am the rock protruding in their way. They batter my consciousness with taunts and slurs propelled by their hatred, their fear, their ignorance. The counter and my seat back vibrate with their simultaneous (gratefully simulated) physical assault.

My fingers curl away into themselves.

My eyes shoot open. Surely this is almost over. I’ve made it 30 seconds. Another long minute to go. I squeeze my eyes shut and focus on the task at hand. And the thought: How did the young people who manned their stations at the Greensboro lunch counter (and others across the South) in the 1960s sustain hours of such

very real abuse?

My experience seems merciful in contrast.

Mercy, the sustained and sometimes desperate search for it, was a theme on our trip. Bryan Stephenson’s book, Just Mercy, which many of us read before or during the trip, had already illuminated for me the plight of the predominantly minority population on death row, sentenced to death less for their crimes than because of the prejudiced institutions that should be delivering justice. As we entered the Legacy Museum that his organization, the Equal Justice Initiative, founded in Montgomery, we heard the stories of some of the captives warehoused, in the room where we stood, prior to being sold into the slave trade. The museum’s exhibits draw a clear connection between that terrifying, brutal, and inhumane introduction to North America and the current-day treatment many black Americans face, still bearing up under layers of bias, prejudice, and stereotyping. Fine arts teacher Paul Murphy’s poignant photography of the Legacy Museum’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice, also called the Lynching Museum, captures the somber and unavoidable truths of lynching’s lasting mark on our society.

A tour of contrasts On my first morning run with Zhenya Arutyunyan (history) and Allison Niekras (math) in Montgomery, we remarked on a gorgeous fountain covered in layers of sculpture—birds, cherubs, the Greek goddess of youth, Hebe—which we later learned had been built some 20 years after the end of the Civil War, to beautify (whitewash?) what had been the site of Montgomery’s all-too thriving slave market. Perhaps Hebe’s crowning of that fountain was to symbolize a brighter, more hopeful future for the city of Montgomery. Sadly, violence and injustice were not through with Montgomery. On those early morning runs, we followed the paths slaves would have taken from their landing on the banks of the Alabama River, past that fountain, past the bus stop where, more than 100 years later, a weary Rosa Parks

boarded a city bus for home, on up Dexter Avenue by Martin Luther King Jr.’s parish at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, and the first White House of the Confederacy, and then the Greyhound bus station where a white mob attacked Freedom Riders in 1961.

These contrasts set a tone for our tour through Alabama. The historical markers explaining the tragedies and triumphs of the region’s and nation’s pursuit of (or obdurate resistance to) civil and human rights for all seemed to keep me spinning.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is doing crucial work toward teaching tolerance, fighting hate, and assuring justice— but its building must be clad in metal to protect against attack. The modest Edmund Pettus Bridge soars when one considers it as the backdrop for a resolute group marching to Montgomery for voting rights in 1965. But don’t forget the blood that was shed two Sundays prior on their first attempt to march. The sense of empowerment was palpable at the site where Tuskegee Airmen trained,

and the nearby Tuskegee Institute where Booker T. Washington ensured a quality education for African-Americans. Of course, we were also all aware of the unethical treatment hundreds of black men received as part of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study of the 1930s and beyond.

These experiences seem so divergent, so contradictory, but the paradox within them is our responsibility to tangle with.

Earlier, I referred to the lunch counter simulation as “the task at hand,” but until we all see this as so much more than that, more than something to pay attention to briefly, or worse, to pay mere lip service to, our country, and even our community here at Country Day cannot thrive. I consider this opportunity to immerse myself in our country’s ugly legacies, and its triumphant victories, as a rare gift.

I am grateful for the bravery, fortitude, and sacrifice of the history-makers we studied on this tour, for their guts, and sheer willpower. I am grateful for the amazing colleagues to whom I could turn as I tried to digest and make sense of this onslaught of facts, images, and feelings.

And I am grateful to Country Day for supporting us on this quest. I look forward to sharing this experience as a teacher, as a colleague, and as a participant in life in this country.

Carrying the Mantle of Leadership Message from the Board of Trustees Chair Todd Gorelick ’82 Leadership. The theme of this issue of Perspectives is among the ideals to which Country Day has always aspired. In these pages, examples of Country Day leadership are a rightful source of pride.

T

HE WORRIES of playground scrapes and the pressures of college admission sometimes blind us to the fact that each and every Country Day student is already among society’s most likely to succeed. Which schools in our community are educating tomorrow’s leaders? Country Day heads anyone’s list. That is both an extraordinary endorsement and a grave responsibility.

Our classrooms and athletic fields are the training grounds for future parents leading their own families. Country Day 12

students will one day fuel our spirits in concert halls and places of worship.

They will lead businesses paying wages to scores of employees, and they will be champions in science and medicine, improving the quality of life for countless people.

What does it mean to carry the mantle of leadership?

Visitors to the newly opened Purdy Center for Science and Math and Hance Lower School Learning Center might

conclude state-of-the-art facilities are an essential part of the mix. Indeed, those new buildings rank among the best of their kind in the nation. Yet, a visit to our dining hall or older classroom buildings is convincing proof that Country Day is an educational leader despite the handicaps imposed by an aging physical infrastructure. In respect of facilities, the best evidence of our leadership resides in the messy construction underway. Leaders are not perfect; rather, they are always perfecting. Just as we seek always to improve Country Day as an institution, so do we strive to inculcate a passion for advancement through learning in Country Day students. Leaders are learners.

Virtually every aspect of the life awaiting our graduates is undergoing rapid, and quickening, change. Thus, Country Day Ready now requires much more than acquiring advanced subject matter skill or knowledge. Becoming a flexible and lifelong learner, curious and eager to gain new knowledge and develop new skills, is more essential than ever. To cultivate learning passion and excellence, teachers and coaches seek to foster in students two signature leadership qualities: humility and confidence, in balanced measure. Only the confident take risks, whether writing a poem for the first time or stepping onto the field with a tough adversary; only the humble seek unfamiliarity and challenge as pathways to improvement. Leaders are equally confident and humble.

Country Day’s commitment to raising children to be leaders and lifelong learners has been a winning formula.

In the past year, Country Day students led the pack yet again. The Class of 2018 included a Morehead-Cain Scholar (our fifth in six years), 12 college athletes, and $10.6 million in scholarship offers.

All 22 of our International Baccalaureate graduates were awarded that prestigious, internationally recognized, diploma.

Student actors and actresses won state and regional awards, and our state champion Odyssey of the Mind team

placed sixth in the world in a global competition. Across all grade levels and by many measures, Country Day ranks at or near the top when compared to peer schools. This year, our educational leadership attracted record-breaking enrollment. Over 96% of prior year’s non-graduating students rejoined us this fall, and our total student population reached 1,686. Leaders deliver exceptional results.

The tallest buildings stand on the deepest foundations. For generations, Country Day families have understood that leadership costs more than tuition alone. Noteworthy examples include extraordinary professional development programs to invest in lifelong learning for teachers, tuition assistance to insure our community comprises a diversity of life experiences from which all gain fresh perspective, and physical spaces designed to foster growth and development, all made possible by financial generosity. In the year just ended, annual gifts to the Country Day Fund neared $2.3 million, our endowment reached over $62 million, and capital gifts toward strategic priorities exceeded $28.6 million, all record-setting figures and a testament to the value we place on investing in our children’s education. To all of those who have made Country Day a philanthropic priority, I offer the thanks of a grateful community.

These future-ready learning spaces reframe Cannon Campus for the challenges our students face today, while providing students and teachers with what they need to take the lead and launch successful futures.

T

he 2018–19 school year opened with the excitement of two new learning spaces, marking the completion of the first phase of a three-phase construction project. While it’s true that learning can take place just about anywhere, students and faculty thrive when they work in spaces that fully support innovative and creative academic programming. As part of the Strategic Plan process, the school community expressed a desire to ensure we continue to offer our students a distinctive and sustainable learning environment. The Board of Trustees approved a long-range master facilities plan to prepare students for a fast-changing global society. Cannon Library: Campus Hub for 46 Years

I

N THE fall of 1972, students, teachers, and parents were in awe of the newly opened Learning Center—home to the Upper School’s Cannon Library upstairs and the Elizabeth Reddig Lower School Library below. In addition to offering students vibrant new research and classroom space, the modern facility “completed the buildings encircling the Lineberger Quadrangle and gave the campus a ‘finished’ look,” as stated in The First Fifty Years, by retired English teacher Julia Britt. At the time, Country Day had been on the Carmel Road campus for 12 years and the opening of the Learning Center was another major step forward in Country Day’s continuous campus improvement. Additionally, the facility better accommodated student-directed learning, a concept that was progressive for the time.

Even before the new Learning Center was built, the Cannon family avidly supported the school’s library. According to the 1957-67 Decade Report, “School funds supplemented by the Cannon Family Library Endowment income and other memorial gifts have permitted our Library growth from a small collection of ‘hand-medowns’ to a ten thousand volume collection of teacher and student selected books, rich in its value for general reading

and course extensions. The value of a good library lies in its use, and ours is a much mined lode of good metal.”

The Learning Center received an upgrade in 1995, as Country Day was on the forefront of technological innovation in secondary schools. As reported in the 1996 issue of Perspectives, the card catalog was replaced with an electronic search function, 50 computers were available for “ready access to the World Wide Web,” and students could “enter the Net just be clicking on an icon on their computer screens.”

Then librarian Carol Pharr said, “The delivery of information is instantaneous.

One optical disc can scan 100 indices in less than two seconds!”

In the 2000s, as our Upper School population continued to grow, Cannon

Library was renovated again to create more classroom space and computer labs—which were then converted again as our 1:1 computing program was implemented.

In recent years, Cannon Library had also become a sometimes noisy hub of activity, reflecting both a need for more gathering spaces for students, as well as a more collaborative approach to teaching and learning.

Currently, as part of the second phase of a multiyear campus construction plan, the Learning Center is being renovated into the Dowd Student Center, which will include two spacious dining halls.

We will be forever grateful to the Cannon family for their vision and generosity in the development of Country Day in its early years.

Country Day’s Robert C. Witman Leadership Academy gives student-athletes the skills to translate leadership theory into practice, which they carry with them on and off the field.

eniors Sophie Francis and Tyler Rigot have gone to great lengths to make athletics a core part of their Country Day experience.

Sophie is about to begin her fourth and final season as a member of Country Day’s varsity swimming team.

In her first three seasons, she earned three individual state championships and helped her teams to two top-five state finishes along the way.

Tyler joined the Bucs’ varsity baseball team when he came to Country Day as a sophomore and has been a regular in the starting pitching rotation for the past

two seasons. His prowess on the mound has been a big factor in Country Day’s 47 wins and two deep state playoff runs in that time.

Both are also founding members of Country Day’s Robert C. Witman Leadership Academy, a unique program that has helped them develop their leadership capacities and contribute to their teams with more than just their physical abilities. Using sports to develop the leadership capacity of our students has the distinct advantage of presenting them with real-life situations that require them to immediately translate leadership theory into practice.

“One example of me using what I’ve learned is how to handle teammates when they encounter adversity,” says Tyler, who plans to continue playing baseball at Bucknell University next year. “I am there to pick them up and to help them clear their mind to focus on the next play or inning. Everyone will encounter adversity in their sport, so it is very important to be there for someone when they struggle. Encouraging your teammates helps create a positive team atmosphere.”

Launched in the fall of 2016, the Leadership Academy is named for Bob Witman, who served as Country Day’s head football coach for 25 years before retiring from that position following the 2014 season. Witman continues to work at Country Day as an assistant coach with the track and field program.

The Academy is administered in partnership with the Janssen Sports Leadership Center, a group that has been at the forefront of leadership development for student-athletes for the past two decades.

Jeff Janssen and his team of facilitators have worked with over 250 institutions in that time and have established leadership academies in some of the nation’s top collegiate athletics programs. Country Day was one of the Center’s first secondary school academy partnerships.

Two-Year Program Puts Theory into Practice

Participating student-athletes spend their first year in the Emerging Leaders program, which focuses on developing self-leadership and leadership of teammates through individual interactions.

They then graduate to the Veteran Leaders program, where they learn how to be vocal leaders and build healthy, team cultures. Graduates of the Veteran Leaders program are now eligible to participate in a new Student-Athlete Leadership Council.

“The principle we’ve learned that has stayed with me the most is the concept of leading by example,” says Sophie, who recently made a commitment to join the swim program at the University of California, San Diego. “We’ve all been told to lead by example since we were young, but the Leadership Academy was the first time I’ve actually learned about it in a more in-depth and serious way.

It’s caused me to stop, think, and evaluate before I handle a situation.”

The curriculum is designed to develop four aspects of leadership that are key to strong individual and team performance in sports: commitment, confidence, composure, and character. Six classroom sessions over the course of the year include lectures, discussions, and activities that introduce theories and practical applications related to these four topics.

Academy participants also complete a variety of assignments that encourage them to reflect on what they’ve learned and work with their coaches to apply it with their teams.

For instance, Tyler shares how he uses the “traffic light” analogy he learned in the Academy’s composure modules to prepare himself for games: “If I’m feeling great and strong, I know that I am in the green and ready to roll without any issues,” he says. “If I’m not feeling 100% but I can work through situations without much adversity, then I know that I am in the yellow. I know that I’m in the red when nothing is going right. I can use this to evaluate how I am feeling and how

to attack once the game begins.”

When Sophie encountered a pair of bickering teammates on her club team during a recent practice, she remembered what she learned in the Academy about effective confrontation and decided to put that knowledge to use: “I told them that they needed to stop focusing on whatever drama was setting them apart and start caring about the other person’s success as well as the success of the whole team. It took a bit, but eventually, we all came together. To date, that was one of the best practices we’ve had.”

Both Sophie and Tyler agree the Academy has helped them become better teammates and leaders, and both hope to continue finding ways to implement what they’ve learned—here at at Country Day and beyond.

“There is so much valuable information you can learn and apply almost immediately to your teams,” Tyler says. “The class teaches you how to deal with adversity, evaluate your role on your team, handle yourself in tense situations, and several other key aspects of being a successful leader. I definitely take it seriously.”

ENDOWMENT FUNDS Endowment plays a critical role in allowing Country Day to fulfill its mission and ensure long-term financial stability. An endowment fund can be compared to a long-term investment or savings plan. It is a “permanent” fund in which the principal is invested and the earnings are spent. The funds earned help to support dynamic programming, such as the Robert C. Witman Athletic Leadership Academy; scholarships that ensure a diverse community of learners; top-flight educators who become even better through professional development; and the operating costs that come with innovative facilities.

Lifelong Learner Upper School history teacher Lyn Tillett is often recognized by families and graduates with philanthropic gifts to the school made in her honor. She teaches four courses of AP history with her students regularly earning top scores on this rigorous exam. Last year, her AP students earned an average of 4.4 on the 5-point scale. She is also advisor for the Debate Team; helped found a new peer tutoring initiative and the Bridge program, which helps acclimate students new to independent school; and was recently recognized by her peers with the Faculty Exceptional Performance award.

Perhaps Ms. Tillett is such an exceptional educator because she never stopped being a student. We asked Ms. Tillett to share a few lessons she learned during her nonstop summer of 2018.

Seeing firsthand the museums, galleries, and historical sites such as the collection of working windmills in Zaanse Schans in the central Netherlands was like chocolate for my soul. If you enjoy history as I do, there is no way you would go to Amsterdam without seeing Anne Frank’s house, or

conference about the Harkness Method, a discussion-based approach to teaching.

I certainly expected this conference to push me beyond my comfort level (which it did!), but I didn’t realize until later how I would be affected by the underlying implications of this approach. While I don’t plan to adopt Harkness teaching all of the time, I left with an important reminder: It’s never too late to change.

new professional connections and learning with my colleagues was as central to this experience for me as the timely subject matter that we investigated. Our students are certainly struggling with the issue of racism and its various manifestations in recent years, so the relevance of these sites is important to our school and my own teaching of American history. Knowing the facts isn’t the same as being immersed as we were; perhaps the most important lesson for me was to remember the empathy engendered within this group of friends on the trip.

Finally, with the benefit of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, I spent two weeks in a seminar studying Vietnam—its rich history, the American war there, and its current role as an important communist country in Southeast Asia. Working at the National Humanities Center with 31 other teachers from all over the U.S., I attended lectures, watched films, held discussions, and met with a delegation of college professors from Vietnam. Being a student again, especially attending a few classes on the UNC campus over 30 years after earning my master’s degree there, brought back fond memories. Perhaps

most important to me upon reflection is remembering what classes are like from the other side of the podium. Rushing from class to class, being surrounded by different types of learners, discerning the appropriate time to ask the right type of questions, staying afloat with rigorous assignments—these were all parts of being a student that I had forgotten. It was exciting, but it was also exhausting.

No wonder those enrolled in my own Country Day classes are so tired.

Returning in August for the opening of the school year, we briefly shared professional development experiences across the Upper School division. It was impressive to hear that so many of my colleagues spent time this summer to become better at their jobs. It was also significant to hear how much support we receive as a faculty in this endeavor.

These opportunities to travel, attend classes or conferences, apply for grants, pursue an interest, or catch up on our profession provide a much-needed impetus for creative change in our classes.

“Children often equate being quiet with listening when, in fact, we’re often thinking about our own ideas rather than truly listening to the speaker,” explains Ashley Johnston, director of studies for the Lower School. “This is a difficult skill, even for adults, so we spend a lot of time in the Lower School really breaking down the steps for our students and giving them time to practice this skill from a young age. We teach them how to listen with their whole body, show interest in what the speaker is saying, and understand another person’s point or perspective.”

As students get older, teachers layer on more difficult skill sets, such as how to ask probing questions, how to argue effectively, and how to agree or disagree respectfully.

According to Ms. Johnston, “By the time our students leave Lower School, we want them to be able to debate effectively and respectfully, ask thoughtful questions of others’ perspectives, and resolve conflicts peacefully. Students don’t always see these skills modeled by the adults in our larger society, so it’s vital that we model it in our own community and give children the tools they need to be thoughtful and respectful communicators and thinkers. Students as mediators In the Upper School, we transition from the teacher as the mediator of dialogue to the students as mediators. Tanya Andrysiak, Upper School director of studies, shares the many ways our oldest students begin to foster and lead discussion with constructive dialogue and critical examination, and are equipped with the tools to lead and serve in the world.

From a curriculum standpoint, Country Day students continue to learn and understand how to respectfully counter opinions which are not in line with their own across all subject areas.

For instance, the annual history research papers—required of all ninth-, tenth-, and eleventh-grade students—is meticulously checked for sound argument and correct citation of scholarly sources, enabling FALL 2018

our students to internalize the need for legitimate support when stating a claim.

In English classes, the traditional “chalk and talk” lecture of earlier generations has been replaced by literary discussion circles. To help ensure class discussions are student-driven and outcome-oriented, Upper School history teacher Lyn Tillett and English teacher Mike Roark attended a workshop about the Harkness Method of discourse (see story on page 36). In the arts, students have the opportunity to take and give feedback—often on projects with a strong emotional component; and in math and science courses, students are regularly involved in group projects, preparing them for the reality of collaborative work in these professional fields.

And key to the Upper School’s success in molding students into thoughtful leaders is our strong advisory program.

All students have faculty guiding them and redirecting them, as needed, throughout their experience in the Upper School. The expectation, though, is that they must be prepared to stand up, speak up, support their perspectives, and really hear what others say.

Outside of the classroom, the Diversity Awareness Forums provide real-world opportunities for students to learn how to present, listen, and discuss topics that can be challenging to them. Run by students, these moderated, lunchtime gatherings involve conversations around big topics like racial identity, religious

identity, and gender identity, among others. All students in grades 9–11 are required to attend three sessions each year; seniors are often the facilitators of the conversations, modelling both advocacy and respectful dialogue.

“I have to admit I was initially a bit skeptical of engaging in conversation with someone with whom I fundamentally disagree,” says Rachel Uri ’13, who graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2017 with a degree in psychology and is currently in graduate school at UNC-Charlotte in the Clinical Health Psychology Program.

“However, I came to realize that sometimes discussion isn’t always about agreement; sometimes discussion is just about understanding. That’s a foundation upon which I have been able to build in college and graduate school. Civil discourse will undoubtedly continue to shape my experience as a graduate student, and one day, a psychologist; being able to listen to, respect, and ultimately understand the perspectives of others ensures success in a diverse society.”

Last spring, Mr. Cooper received an e-mail from Amelia Brown ’14, a recent Northwestern graduate. She wrote about her time in his eighth-grade history course, “I believe it’s no coincidence that at this time I was learning about the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War in your class. I watched footage of children being hosed by state police, read A Letter from a Birmingham Jail, and learned about the devastation of MLK’s and Bobby Kennedy's assassinations in 1968. I became inspired by this history… and this was the time I first became passionate about activism, politics and government, and human and civil rights.

It’s a passion that I carry with me every day and has only grown, now as an Advocacy Fellow, to potentially pursuing a law degree, and who knows what beyond.”

“Notes like hers don’t arrive every day,” concludes Mr. Cooper. “But when they do, they reaffirm the work done in Lower, Middle, and Upper School to help individuals not only discover and follow their passions, but to equip them with the skills to navigate an often uncivil world with perspective, respect, civility, and courage.”

Alumnus on Campus On August 24, 2018, John DuPuy ’90 shared advice to seniors through a reflection of his own personal journey from Country Day to today. “Due in part to the nature of the academic and athletic opportunities offered, the daily interactions with faculty, coaches, and staff, and the embedded core values that provide such a rich and multifaceted educational experience— Country Day has provided you with a set of tools that will be at your disposal far beyond graduation. From multitasking and time management to critical thinking and problem solving, these are the skills that have been cultivated in your time at Country Day, and you are much farther along the curve in that respect than your peers around the country.”

After attending Georgetown University, where he graduated summa cum laude with a double major in physics and English, John graduated with high honors from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law. He worked as an attorney in private practice for five years and as in-house counsel for a large hospital system for 10 years. Seven years ago, John left the practice of law to manage a portfolio of companies primarily operating in the commercial real estate development and transportation industries.

Retiring Faculty and Staff The Country Day community is grateful for the service of the faculty and staff members who retired at the end of the 2017–18 school year.

Delores Wilburn / 38 years / Finance Office In her long tenure with the school, Delores held the roles of bookkeeper, accountant, and comptroller. She has served on the school’s Finance Committee and as a Board member of Jefferson Pilot Credit Union, and was honored with an Exceptional Staff Appreciation Award in 1997.

Dianne Lawing / 33 years / Middle School Since joining Country Day in 1985, Dianne served Middle School faculty and students in all grades as scheduling coordinator, math teacher, department chair, Student Council advisor, PE teacher, and a volleyball and basketball coach. She also worked tirelessly and received great personal satisfaction from her many years as coach of the MathCounts team. She was inducted into the Honorary Alumni Association in February 2018.

Susan McConderee / 31 years / Advancement Susan was integral to the success of Country Day’s Advancement department, helping to build our school’s strong culture of philanthropy and steward our closest friends and supporters.

Over the years, Susan had done nearly every job within the Advancement office and was inducted into the Honorary Alumni Association and received the Staff Exceptional Performance Award in 2018.

Katherine Wood / 25 years / Lower School A lead second-grade teacher since 2002, Katherine began her career as an assistant kindergarten teacher, followed by an assistant position for second grade. For her teaching excellence and passion, Katherine was awarded the Faculty Exceptional Performance Award in 2009 and the Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award in 2018.

Karen Oldham / 20 years / Upper School As the Upper School Head Librarian, Karen grew the collection to almost 20,000 pieces and strengthened the personalized research services for all students and faculty. Karen also served as advisor for the Aquilifers Service Club since 2010. In 2004, she was awarded the Faculty Exceptional Performance Award.

Karen Sullivan has served Country Day for 35 years and received the Florence Radcliffe Clauss Chapman Faculty Appreciation Awards.

Meet Our New Trustees Welcome to these trustees, joining the Board for the 2018–19 school year Alex D. Funderburg recently retired as managing director at Banc of America Leasing and Capital. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, and was the Carolinas chapter president from 2011– 15. He is also on the national board of ImproveCareNow, a quality improvement network of pediatric hospitals. Locally, Alex serves on the boards of Novant Health’s Presbyterian Medical Center Foundation and the Charlotte Ballet. He has a BA in economics from Amherst College and an MBA from Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. At Country Day, Alex has been involved with the Country Day Fund for a number of years, including serving as co-chair with his wife, Patty, during the 2016-17 school year. He is the current Leadership Chair of the Country Day Fund and a member of the Capital Campaign Cabinet. The Funderburgs have three children: son, Alex ’15; and daughters, Caroline ’17 and Emily, in eighth grade.

Scott Mattei is the president of Mattei Holdings LLC and oversees numerous underlying companies specializing in asset allocation in both public and private markets including real estate development, land sales, private equity, and hedged investments. Scott also serves as trustee of the Mattei Foundation, a private family foundation. Scott is an actively involved member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and a lifetime member of the National Eagle Scout Association, and currently serves on the Mint Museum’s Board of Trustees and the President’s Advisory Council of the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business. Scott has a BBA in finance and BA in history from Southern Methodist University and his MBA from University of Texas-Austin. Scott established the J. Scott Mattei McCombs MBA Scholarship and the J. Scott Mattei SMU Endowed Scholarship, respectively, at each of his alma maters. He joined the Country Day Advancement Committee in 2015 and is a member of the Capital Campaign Cabinet. He and his wife, Ashley, have a daughter, Kate, in seventh grade, and son, Charlie, in fifth grade.

Dr. Lisa M. Toppin is the chief diversity officer at LPL Financial. She has held HR leadership positions with Charles Schwab, Phillips Petroleum, Sherwin Williams, and Montell USA. Lisa serves on the Linkage Women in Leadership Advisory Board and has leadership roles in other nonprofits, including the Junior League of Charlotte and Above and Beyond Students. She is also in the Class of 2018 for Charlotte Business Journal’s Women in Business Awards. Lisa has a BA in speech pathology from Howard University, a BA in psychology from George Washington University, an MS in human resources from Rutgers University, and an EdD in human resources development from George Washington University. Since coming to Country Day in 2012, Lisa has volunteered in a variety of positions for POCIS and the Parents’ Association, along with leadership roles for the Country Day Fund. She and her husband, Lin, have two children: son, Lance, in eighth grade, and daughter, Lindsay, a sixth grader.
