The 2019–20 school year was genuinely exceptional, both for the successes we shared and the challenges we faced together. The addition of 72,000 square feet of educational space over the past four years has been a critical component in our ability to open the 2020–21 school year with distanced, in-person learning.

ive years ago, Country Day began the largest comprehensive campaign in our school’s history; one designed to deliver the vision of our student-focused strategic plan by creating a distinctive and sustainable learning environment, and supporting our ability to continue preparing a new generation of leaders, thinkers, and doers. Our $54 million goal was ambitious, yet we proceeded with intention and confidence knowing that our community would be committed to meeting our mission and keeping our school at the forefront of educational leadership in Charlotte, our region, and the nation. This annual report celebrates all who have helped elevate the student experience over the past five years.

I am grateful for the robust leadership and the deep commitment of our Forefront Campaign Chairs Wellford Tabor and Walker Poole. Thanks to the generosity of early lead donors, in 2016 we were able to begin construction on state-of-the-art learning spaces that have transformed Cannon Campus for our students and faculty. These include: • The Purdy Center for Science and Mathematics

and Pilon families has allowed us to begin construction on the next phase of our longrange Master Facilities Plan, truly cementing Country Day’s position as a national leader in education.

Parents, faculty, staff, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends of the school leaned in and helped us finish strong by supporting the Forefront Campaign through capital gifts and the Country Day Fund, even in the face of a global pandemic. We were unable to celebrate together in May, but know I am so proud of our community for their belief in our mission and their collective effort in shaping an extraordinary future for our children.

Country Day’s excellence is rooted in our partnership with you. Without the support of our steadfast donors and volunteers like you, we would be unable to celebrate Country Day as a school at the forefront. My sincerest gratitude for all you do for our students.

This is yet another step in fulfilling our long-range facilities plan.

Lastly, as I announced in the spring, five early donors to the Forefront Campaign stepped up in a big way to support students even more with the building of the Klein Family Natatorium.

ine years ago, Head of School Mark Reed and the Board of Trustees introduced a strategic planning process that began by asking the Country Day community about our most valued qualities and traditions, and our priorities for the future. The shared visions that evolved from that process have guided our decisions and propelled Country Day forward on a trajectory of incredible strength and growth for nearly a decade.

Our focus on preparing students to lead and thrive in a fast-changing world, instilling personal integrity and well-being, inspiring a love of learning through exceptional faculty and staff, and creating a distinctive and sustainable learning environment have ensured our school’s place at the forefront of education for many years to come.

Country Day could not have achieved all that it has accomplished for our students without visionary leadership, exceptional faculty and staff, and supportive community members who believe in our mission. Together, over the past five years, we have rallied around the school’s Forefront Campaign, bringing our students an even more innovative learning experience. The record $59 million raised supports new facilities that foster innovation and community, people and programs through the Country Day Fund, and long-term financial health through endowment. At the same time, we have seen record numbers of admissions applications and our reenrollment averages 96 percent.

As we close the books on this highly successful strategic plan, we are also asking how we can do better at building and supporting our culture of inclusivity. To that end, the Board of Trustees established a task force to lead a communitywide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) assessment and monitor progress toward accomplishing our school’s DEI goals.

This work is important, timely, and taking place amid the unknowns of a global pandemic.

The faculty and staff have been simply phenomenal in preparing for this school year.

Because of their hard work, dedication, and spirit of innovation, we were able to bring our students back to campus for blended, in-person instruction. On behalf of the Board, I offer my heartfelt gratitude for the work they have done, and continue to do every day, to keep our community safe.

Even in these difficult times, I know we are all committed to giving Country Day students the very best academic experience. With an inspiring environment as their backdrop, our students are supported by gifted teachers and coaches, who are helping to prepare them to contribute meaningfully to a changing world—to solve problems, to think critically, to instill personal integrity and well-being, to lead with heart.

Walker Poole and Wellford Tabor Raise the Bar for Extraordinary Volunteer Leadership IN 2015, when Mark Reed asked

Walker Poole and Wellford Tabor to co-chair the largest, most comprehensive campaign in Country Day history, they both checked with their wives first and then said, “Yes!” Their easy partnership, genuine love for the school, and can-do attitude were overwhelmingly factors in the success of the Forefront Campaign. We also benefitted from their financial acumen as they served on the Board of Trustees as key construction and financing decisions were made. They led by example with their time and with their resources, and their commitment inspired others to do the same.

For five years—through raising their families, through their own busy and successful careers, and through a global pandemic—they showed up time and time again to countless meetings, phone calls, coffees, and events to share the Forefront story and the importance of this transformative campaign in our schoolʼs history.

They both shattered previous fundraising records and raised the bar extraordinarily high for volunteer leadership and service. Suzanne Hilser-Wiles, campaign counsel to Country Day and president of Grezenbach Glier and Associates, an international consulting firm, notes: “Volunteer leadership is critical to any successful fundraising effort, and Walker and Wellford exemplify what we tell our

clients they need—leaders who are willing to dedicate the necessary time and energy to engage others, who are thoughtful partners to advancement and the Head of School, and who set an example with their own generosity. This kind of leadership inspires others to dig deep and do their best for the school too. This campaign exceeded expectations and transformed Country Day. That would not have happened without your co-chairs.”

For generations to come, our school community will be strengthened by the impact of their leadership and hard work.

Mark Reed shares, “Their love and deep respect for this school will be appreciated in perpetuity through the legacy this campaign and all their leadership made possible. We are indebted to them for their incredible service, not only to this campaign, but for all they have done for our school.”

In the truest sense, both Walker and Wellford embody what it means to be at the Forefront, and we remain ever grateful they said “Yes!”

Walker Poole’s clear and thoughtful leadership has strengthened our school in countless ways. There isn’t a fundraising hat he has not worn at Country Day, and he served on our Board of Trustees from September 2010–May 2020. For his distinguished and selfless service to our school community, Walker was inducted into our Honorary Alumni Association in 2020.

Walker is a founding partner of Ridgemont Equity Partners. He was also a Morehead-Cain Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received a BS degree and currently serves on the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund Board of Directors.

He and his wife, Anne, have three children: Walker ’15, Virginia ’17, and Lilly ’20.

For more than a decade, Wellford Tabor has served Country Day in numerous leadership capacities with his trademark energy, enthusiasm, and drive.

He has served as a Board of Trustees member since 2009, as co-chair of the Parent Committee for the Believe & Achieve Campaign, and as the Country Day Fund’s Leadership Chair 2013–14. In 2020, he was inducted into the Honorary Alumni Association for his tremendous service and tireless leadership on behalf of our school.

Wellford is the managing partner of the investment firm Keeneland Capital LLC. He and his wife, Ann, have three children: Grace ’17, Alex ’19, and Russell ’21.

Ron and Courtney Eliasek Set the Standard as Community Chairs for the Forefront Campaign

I

t is hard to find a volunteer role or opportunity current parents Ron and Courtney Eliasek haven’t taken on at Country Day. In any given day in the life of our school, you may find Courtney making calls for the Country Day Fund, working behind the scenes with our Upper School theater department, or running a Parents’ Association meeting as this year’s co-president. Prior Parents’ Association roles include Hospitality, Parent Ed, Car Raffle, Lower School Board chair, Projects Board chair, and many, many more.

Ron has volunteered faithfully on numerous Country Day Fund subcommittees, served on the Campaign Cabinet for three years, and is a current member of our Board of Trustees. Professionally, he is the vice chairman of Tech/Media/Telecom Investment Banking at Bank of America Securities.

Ron and Courtney also chaired the Country Day Fund together in 2015–16, during the first year of the school’s campaign efforts, so it was no surprise that they were the first call for Community Chairs of the Forefront Campaign.

Ron and Courtney are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and no job is ever too big or too small.

When called to serve, they are the first to dive right in, ask good questions, and partner on achieving the best outcomes. They believe in the mission of our school, and their commitment is evident in all they do day in and day out.

When asked what Country Day means to their family, Ron and Courtney noted, “Apart from the outstanding academic offerings at Country Day, the one-on-one meaningful, personal relationships our children have with faculty and staff at the school provide a very unique experience. The high quality and caring nature of our teachers and school leadership are truly evident across the Country Day community.”

Our school is incredibly fortunate to have the Eliaseks’ leadership across all facets of school life; and their teamwork, alongside Walker Poole and Wellford Tabor, positioned us for a strong finish to these ambitious campaign efforts and beyond.

• The Dowd Student Center, a constant hub of activity, transforms the heart of campus, elevates the dining program, enhances educational programming, and fosters community.

• The Belk Upper School Learning Center offers students a relaxed area for hanging out, much like a college library, with places for quiet study and research.

Additionally, the renovation of Cannon Science delivered a new College Counseling suite, and a new Makerspace and collaboration area. We opened a new campus store—BucsShop—and the campus has never looked more beautiful with areas like Shuford Green. Finally, we have already begun the next phase of our long-range Master Facilities Plan with the construction of a new athletics complex underway.

Country Day’s relationship with Balfour Beatty began 40 years ago with Tom Dooley, a Trustee and owner of the R.T. Dooley Construction Company. Tom was instrumental in the remodeling of Cannon Campus after the merger with Carmel Academy. Like their father before them, Bob and David Dooley have also been leaders at Country Day and leaders of R.T. Dooley Construction before it became part of Balfour Beatty Construction Company, who Country Day is proud to continue working with. The Dooley family remains integral to this partnership and is key to the collaborative

From JK–12, Country Day teachers thoughtfully integrate technology into the educational experience in ways that deepen learning for our students. Technology in and of itself does not make the educational experience better for our students. Yet, it can be very powerful when well-trained teachers with ongoing professional development blend it into their

lesson plans to help further student understanding and deepen connections.

As a 1:1 school, Country Day provides all students in grades 3–12 a school-issued personal computing device as an integral part of their educational experience, making technology use an everyday part of 21st century learning. Students use mobile devices to reinforce handwriting in kindergarten, capture and analyze real-time data in physics and engineering classes, and practice fluency in modern language classes.

As part of our Computer Science curriculum, students in grades K–8 participate in Hour of Code Week. From learning the basics of sequencing and directionality in kindergarten to building simple computer games in older grades, our students are learning the basics of computer programming in a fun, engaging, high-interest way. Just as we know it’s important for students to learn some chemistry, even if they won’t become chemists, and to be

Q familiar with history, even if they won’t become historians, it’s important that they have some knowledge of coding because technology is so integrated into their daily lives.

The Forefront Campaign brought two new Makerspaces to Cannon Campus and additional 3D printers. Through collaboration and intentional innovation, teachers find ways to partner together to design learning experiences that help students make critical connections in understanding the world around them. For instance, in the Lower School Makerspace, fourth graders used green screen software on their iPads to deepen creativity for their documentary project. Upper and Lower School science teachers collaborated to create 3D models of the Grand Canyon for a second-grade science lesson on erosion, and an IB student collaborated with chemistry teachers to create cation and anion puzzle pieces for teaching ionic bonding.

Country Day’s commitment to educational technology helped our teachers, students, and families pivot to emergency remote learning last spring as many tools were already in place to offer virtual and online lessons seamlessly.

Over the summer, every faculty member received at least 20 hours of professional development in remote educational delivery in preparation for our blended learning model to begin the 2020-21 school year. And they are supported by a strong team of educational technologists who analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate processes and tools to enhance the educational experience.

For the past five years, Upper School Educational Technologist Donna Campbell-Patrick has been leading her colleagues into this new world with her trademark patience, good humor, and commitment to excellence.

“Donna is an exemplar of the Country Day teacher—she is regularly pushing herself to learn something new, something better,” says Tanya Andrysiak, Upper School director of studies. “She provides multiple ways of presenting information, from small group training sessions to archived online videos she has created, knowing that there will always be ‘students’ among the faculty who prefer the 1:1 instruction.”

Donna, a certified Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert and a Certified Trainer, says “My goal is always to help teachers use technology effectively in the classroom, not as a ‘neat-o’ gimmick but as a genuine tool to support learning. I try to be the support they need to craft amazing lessons for our students. Regardless of their comfort level with technology, I get to meet them where they are and guide them through the process.”

When Country Day moved to emergency remote learning last spring, Donna quickly built out an expansive Ed Tech Hub within the Microsoft Teams platform to house tutorials, videos, and examples for teachers. In preparation for our current blended model, she hosted webinars, created test classes in Teams, and worked individually with teachers to help them polish their skills on the tools needed to deliver their curriculum in person and remotely.

“I’m proud of our teachers,” says Donna. “In February, they were teaching all students in one classroom, able to collect paper assignments, use social cues and gestures to communicate with students, pass out a quiz, use active games and candy incentives—the things we had in high school.

When I look at classes today, it is unbelievable to see the transformation the teachers have undergone.

Teachers are currently using technology to change how those things are being delivered without compromising what is being delivered.

“English teachers are managing fruitful, synchronous discussions with students who are in the classroom and at home. History teachers are using technology to assess and provide meaningful feedback on the research process. Math teachers are innovating with Flipgrid to have students show their math steps. Science teachers are using virtual labs when the hands-on version puts students too close.

Fine Arts teachers create Wakelets for at-home lessons and are implementing digital portfolios. The teachers have grown and changed so our students can get the most out of each lesson, and each of these changes demonstrates to the student both the power of technology and that using it effectively is a necessary skill for whatever tomorrow may bring.”

Our teachers and administrators continually assess and revise curriculum through a lens that ensures what and how we teach is equipping students to think critically, act respectfully, and show sensitivity to the needs and feelings of others.

For instance, beginning in junior kindergarten and kindergarten, the AMAZE curriculum helps children to see difference as a positive thing. Using high-quality literature, hands-on activities, and

persona dolls, teachers explicitly teach children the knowledge, values, and skills they need to support and respect each other across differences of race, class, culture, gender, and so forth. In Lower School social studies, students access multiple texts so they have more than a single story about the event. This helps to build critical-thinking skills and develop empathy by asking “whose voice is represented and whose voice is missing?�

In Middle School, diversity and global themes are woven into the curriculum in numerous ways. For instance, themes of student perspective/identity, bias, stereotypes, and prejudice are examined through advisory, book clubs, and summer reading. In seventh-grade World Geography, students personally connect with numerous speakers from more than 30 countries from around the world. They also participate in an annual Immigration Day and hear from immigrants who share their stories, learn from an Immigration Services officer, and participate in other curricular activities intended to better their understanding of this issue.

Students make connections with the required English reading of Ask Me No Questions and other interdisciplinary work in World Geography, science, Spanish, and math. Our mission is to foster healthy dialogue about the issues that emerge; not to tell students what to think, but to teach them how to arrive at their own conclusions and then how to discuss their ideas in a civil manner.

Opportunities expand further in Upper School. Freshman Seminar, a required course designed specifically for ninth graders, addresses various issues and developmental needs of young adolescents including harassment awareness, identity development, difference, and cooperation. In addition, all freshmen are required to attend Diversity Awareness Forum sessions. Through English and history electives, students can dive deep into courses such as Philosophy, Faith, and Fiction; Education for Social Justice; African-American History; and 20th Century Women’s History.

As a school, we embrace the term “glocal,” which emphasizes understanding the global diversity and resources in the community where one lives prior to exploring the world beyond our borders. In addition to curricular connections, students can join a wide range of global-themed extracurricular clubs, and students are regularly involved in community international festivals and events, and opportunities to meet with diplomats and honorary consuls.

Our commitment to developing cultural awareness in our students provides them with the skills, experience, confidence, and motivation to play an active role in a world that is becoming ever more interconnected.

Dr. Neely Kaydos-Daniels ’91 is Prepared for a Global Pandemic

D

r. Neely (Cornelia) Kaydos-Daniels ’91 is

the associate director for strategic information within the Division of Global HIV and TB at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Throughout her career she has directed studies of infectious disease outbreaks such as influenza, Zika, and HIV/AIDS, among others. Neely credits Country Day for putting her on the path for a career dependent on cultural awareness.

“In Upper School there were some great electives available,” she remembers, “such as Introduction to Psychology with Mr. Levine and Russian Literature with Mrs. Britt. Those opportunities to try something new opened my eyes to the fact that there would be lots of opportunities going forward about which I knew nothing at the time. By the time I

graduated I knew I had the ability to tackle any field of study in which I had interest.”

Neely went on to Rice University and studied anthropology, where she learned “how culture can influence our perception of our lives.” After college, Neely found herself reading fiction centered on infectious disease outbreaks and an Ebola outbreak was in the news at the time. “I was hooked on the concept of infectious disease outbreaks at that point.”

After earning an MSPH and PhD at UNC-Chapel Hill, Neely became an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer at the CDC working in applied epidemiology, disease surveillance, and outbreak investigation.

Tackling COVID-19

“I have been actively working on the COVID-19 pandemic in different ways and for different countries since January. It is exhausting and I’m as tired of COVID-19 as everyone else,” she says.

“Understanding the culture and institutions and infrastructure are really important as we work to mitigate the pandemic.

What works in the U.S. will not necessarily work in Ethiopia and vice versa. For example, it is an important part of the culture in Ethiopia that meals are shared among family members or friends from a single plate. So, it may be more difficult to implement physical distancing in Ethiopia than, say, mask-wearing by the public.”

Neely acknowledges the challenges associated with implementing protocols to protect against the virus. “I understand that it’s really difficult for all of us to change our routines, change our lives. I see more and more people wearing masks, so that makes me happy.”

Through the campaign efforts, devoted and generous parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends established 14 new endowed funds. Overall, $9.71 million was raised in endowment support to ensure Country Day’s long-term strength and stability.

Under prudent management, these resources support dynamic programming, scholarships that ensure a diverse community of learners, and top-notch educators who remain at the forefront through robustly funded professional development. Country Day’s endowment is the largest among independent schools in North Carolina, distinguishing our leadership and culture of philanthropy.

One such example of endowment support is from the Sherrill and Branstrom families and their quest to honor long-time tennis program coach Calvin Davis and his impact at Country Day. Together with their families, Stuart Sherrill ’92, Glenn Sherrill ’89, their father and his wife Ron and Paulette Sherrill, and their mother and her husband Bill and Robin Branstrom created The Calvin Davis Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The Sherrill and Branstrom families exemplify leadership and lifelong connection with Country Day. Their distinctive relationship with our school will continue to impact our community for generations to come.

Bill Branstrom was instrumental to bringing Calvin to Country Day in 1990.

Since then, Calvin has built a tennis dynasty at Country Day. Over his tenure, the girls’ program has won a total of 16 state championships, while the boys’ program has earned 18 state titles. As coach, mentor, and nurturer of young talent, Calvin has seen more than 80 of his players move on to play at the college level, and three have played on the professional tennis tour. He was inducted into the school’s Honorary Alumni Association in recognition of his tremendous impact in shaping Country Day graduates.

While Calvin has received numerous awards and accolades beyond Country Day, his athletes are quick to share about his significance and influence off the courts as well. The Calvin Davis Endowed Scholarship Fund honors the legacy of this outstanding mentor and ensures that Country Day students will continue to experience the legendary impact of Calvin for generations to come.

2019/20 Admissions Report In March, just prior to the Admissions Office notifying grade 1–12 families who were admitted for the 2020–21 academic year, Country Day shifted to emergency remote learning in response to the global pandemic. Despite the uncertainty of the time, our enrollment remained extremely strong and the Admissions team pivoted quickly to meet the needs of new families virtually through connections like Zoom meetings and YouTube Live question and answer sessions.

We are continuing to adapt and provide innovative virtual solutions to help prospective families get to know Country Day. For instance, our virtual Talk and Tour meeting with families over Zoom provides the same kind of individualized attention we offered in person. Numerous virtual Open Houses and Information Sessions are being planned, and we’ve adapted our “interviews” for our little children to a virtual platform.
