CHARLOTTE COUNTRY CLUB

SUMMER 2025

A LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Dear Members,

Summer has officially arrived, and there’s no better place to soak it all in than at the Club. Between the opening of the pool season and our summer camps, the club grounds have been filled with youthful energy!

Your children might have some extra “free time” being out of school, but we have some events on the calendar to keep them busy. Our amazing Youth Activities team has a fun summer planned for your children and I encourage you to sign them up for a week of camp or register for a youth event, such as a cooking class with Chef Laurent, field trips, and events at the pool.

Learn something new from our team this summer! In this issue, event planner Bella Aceti shares her family’s Cuban recipe for members to make at home, which is perfect for summer grilling. Our golf and tennis staff offer tips and tricks to help improve your game during these quieter summer months. The food and beverage team are also hosting their annual bartender challenge (learn more on page 15), so be sure to visit the dining rooms this July to participate in the friendly competition! Recipes on last year’s winning cocktails are included for you to try at home.

Lastly, this summer also marks a special chapter in our club’s history. It’s the final season to enjoy our golf course before it undergoes an exciting and important restoration this September. To accommodate more member play, the course will be open on certain Mondays this July and August. We invite you to take full advantage of every round this summer as we celebrate the course’s legacy and look forward to its bright future.

Here’s to a fantastic summer – I hope to see you enjoying all the Club has to offer!

Respectfully,

Tennis Professional

This spring, D.I.V.E. (Diversity, Inclusion, Voices, and Equality) celebrated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a special highlight on Assistant Tennis Professional Christiaan Lee-Daigle. Christiaan’s mother is Chinese-Canadian and he shared insights with the team about his heritage, including the journey his maternal grandparents took to move from China to Canada during World War II with very little. “Knowing what my Por (grandmother) and Gung (grandfather) experienced leaving their homes in China and starting their lives in Canada from close to nothing has made me appreciate everything I have in my life. Like them, I take pride in my work and do my best to teach that to my two daughters.”

MEET THE INTERNS!

Members will see some new faces this summer! Each year, we welcome summer interns seeking an education in culinary, hospitality, education, turf management, golf, tennis, and more! Please be sure to introduce yourselves to this year’s summer interns.

HAVANA NIGHTS

The beginning of summer is such an exciting time of the year, and the MemberMember Tournament is not only a great way to celebrate its inception, but also to utilize the golf course before the restoration.

As this was the last Member-Member Tournament before September’s closure, the Chairs and club leadership wanted to ensure the party was truly memorable with over-the-top food and décor. Friday’s Havana Nights Party brought the lively Cuban capital to life inside the Clubhouse. 1950’s Mercury cars greeted members as they entered a Palm-filled Clubhouse.

Bright umbrellas and string lights lined ‘Old Havana’ with the scents of coconut and lime filling the air. Meanwhile, the Ultimate Nota Band hit it out of the park with salsa music and dancers, ensuring members were grooving on the dance floor. Members enjoyed tropical-themed drinks, and Chef Laurent’s unique Cuban creations featured a pig in a fedora!

With an event of this nature, the Club utilized several vendors to create some magic, including Prettiest Pieces, Creative Solutions, and Connie Duglin Linens. Colors such as Palm Leaf Tangerine and Salsa completed the bright ambiance of “island time” in the Clubhouse. It was

We’re preparing for another memorable year filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable celebrations.

We believe in the importance of personal connection and take pride in getting to know each couple, understanding their vision, and making sure every detail is thoughtfully and beautifully executed.

Looking ahead to 2026, the event planning team is filled with anticipation for the celebrations to come. Charlotte Country Club provides not just a stunning backdrop, but a welcoming and warm environment where families and friends can gather to celebrate something truly special. We can’t wait to share in the meaningful moments that will unfold and invite couples to consider the Club as the setting for a wedding day they’ll treasure forever.

BARTENDER CONTEST

Each Summer, the Club’s bartending team is challenged to a friendly competition. Every bartender has the opportunity to get creative and come up with their own fun cocktail, which is then featured for one week in all dining outlets. The Clubhouse team keeps track of how many cocktails each bartender sells, and whoever sells the most is crowned the CCC bartending champion!

In 2024, our first and second place winners were Jimbo and Asher, selling 46 and 32 of their featured beverages, respectively. Jimbo’s “Pontoon Smash" was a refreshingly light bourbon and absinthe cocktail. Asher kept it simple with “The Chesney,” which included just three ingredients, letting our house-infused jalapeño tequila take center stage.

We will kick off this year’s competition the week after the Fourth of July, so be sure to check out each week’s feature and support your favorite bartender! You can also learn more about these featured cocktails on Instagram this July.

2 oz Bulleit bourbon

.25 oz Absinthe

1 oz pineapple juice

.75 oz lemon juice

Add all ingredients to shaker with ice; shake until cold. Strain into a glass with fresh ice and garnish with a mint leaf.

2 oz jalapeño tequila

1.5 oz mint simple syrup

1 oz lime juice

In a shaker, muddle three mint leaves and mint simple syrup. Add ice, jalapeno tequila, and lime juice; shake and pour all into a glass over fresh ice. Garnish with sliced jalapeño.

AFTER DINNER

WITH MIMI & BIO

"My grandparents, whom we all lovingly call Mimi and Bio, were both born and raised in Havana, Cuba. As long as I can remember, dinners with them were centered around food, stories, and memories that vividly took our imagination to Cuba. My heritage lives on through the many stories and recipes that have been part of our family for generations. Nothing brings those memories to light stronger than when the smells of Cuban cooking fill my home. Though my grandparents left Cuba long ago, they have never let it leave them. And because of them, it will never leave me either."

Family Recipe: Mojo Criollo

A staple of Cuban cuisine, Mojo Criollo is a zesty, garlicky marinade or sauce that brings brightness and depth to many classic Cuban dishes. Mojo Criollo can be used for marinating meats and vegetables alike.

Ingredients:

8-10 garlic cloves

1 ½ cup sour orange juice (substitute: 1 cup fresh OJ, ¼ cup lemon juice, ¼ cup lime juice)

1/3 cup minced white onion

1 tsp. dry oregano

1/3 cup olive oil

Salt Pepper

Instructions:

Make a garlic paste. Add the garlic cloves with 1/4 tsp of salt in a mortar and pestle. Mash the garlic cloves until you get a smooth paste. The salt helps break down the garlic.

Make the marinade. Add the garlic paste, onions, sour orange juice, oregano, oil, and salt and pepper in a large jar with a lid. Start with 1/2 tsp of salt and 1/4 tsp of black pepper. Close the jar tightly and shake it until well combined.

Taste and adjust salt as needed. This marinade should taste garlicky, citrusy, bright, tangy, and slightly sour. Be sure to shake well before every use.

INTRODUCING

THE MECKLENBURG

Did you know Charlotte Country Club now has its own exclusive beer?

During the Tailgate Tournament, the Club hosted Sycamore Brewing to provide their beers to tournament participants. Sycamore took notice of the special club culture and specialty branded Tailgate beer cans and wanted to collaborate with the Club further. In early February, they approached the food & beverage team with “The Mecklenburg,” a Session IPA their team was crafting. Light, crisp, and refreshingly smooth, it was the kind of beer that instantly brought to mind long afternoons on the golf course. This beer is a light IPA with slight hop notes but has a nice crisp finish. The balance of bitterness and lower alcohol content pairs well with lighter, flavorful foods like salads, veggies, burgers, fish, spicy dishes, and citrus desserts.

This beer is only available at Charlotte Country Club and can be found at all dining venues. Crack open a can and enjoy The Mecklenburg this summer!

TIP FROM THE PRO

POACHING & NET MOVEMENT OFF YOUR PARTNER'S SERVE

The best opportunity for the net person to get their racquet on a put-away volley is right off the opponent’s return of serve. This is especially true off your partner's first serve, which can be more aggressive both in pace and placement than their second serve. This happens by either a well-timed poach across the open court, being ready for a return driven right at you, or being prepared to move for a weak return.

First, the net player should be in a position where their presence is felt, without giving up too much space down the alley. Start in the very middle of the service box (from service line to net, and from center service line to singles side line), take a half step forward and a half step towards the alley. From there, try to be unpredictable and not lean one way, but be ready to go in either direction, or to make a well-timed poach across the open court right before the returner makes contact.

Have a Plan. Communicate with your partner. Without delaying play, be aware of where your partner likes to serve or where they intend to serve. You'll know which way you can lean based off where the server’s target is. For serves down the “T”, it allows you to slightly move towards the center of the court, where on a wide serve, you could be more vulnerable to being passed down your alley. Some players find the best serve to poach on is a “body” serve, where the returner can’t get as clean a strike as they’d like.

When to poach? Don’t overuse poaching similar to overusing bluffing in poker. Throw in some fake poaches, and they may hit it right at you. But when you do poach, be prepared to go hard and fast, and ideally, the server is ready to cover behind you. I’d recommend not poaching as much on your partner’s second serve as the returner has more time to change their target and may be more likely to drive it at the net player. Poach when you think your opponent feels pressure, sometimes even on big points. On these points, your opponents may be playing it safe, which is a great time to take advantage of their predictability.

Being aggressive with your net movement, without being unnecessarily risky with what you give up, can be a big advantage. It’s a great way to find the mental advantage that comes with aggressive play, without feeling like you have to hit every shot your hardest, which often leads to more errors. Ask your coach for more tips on poaching, and we’ll continue to work on this in lessons and clinics!

2025 - 2026 INDOOR FACILITY BLOCK SEASON

It’s hard to believe preparations are already underway for the first full block season in the Indoor Tennis Facility. The 2025–2026 winter block season will begin on Saturday, November 1, and will run through the end of February for morning blocks, and through the end of March for weekend and evening blocks.

Courts will be automatically reserved each week for participants during the block season. Members are encouraged to begin considering their preferred time slots. Time requests will be accepted starting Monday, September 15, with the goal of finalizing the block schedule by October 1. This timeline allows ample opportunity for planning and for members to decide whether they would like to become an Indoor User for the full 12-month cycle from November 1, 2025, to October 31, 2026.

Indoor User Details:

• User Fee: $50/month, billed monthly

• Annual Commitment: 12 months, totaling $600 for the year

Indoor User Benefits:

• Covers all members under the membership

• Includes all court fees for the full 12-month period

• Allows submission of block time requests

Non-User Court Fees:

• $30 per use for doubles

• $40 per use for singles

• $80 per use for family play

• Guest fees: $45 per guest (applies to both users and non-users)

Members are welcome to request assistance in forming “block groups.” However, please note that block times are intended for member play only, not for instruction or use with a tennis professional. A separate schedule is in place that allows pros to reserve indoor courts both during and outside of block season, ensuring they have adequate access to indoor time as needed.

RECIPROCITY INFORMATION

While the course is closed for the Ross Restoration starting in September, several facilities in the Charlotte area, as well as other parts of North and South Carolina, have generously offered reciprocal playing opportunities for CCC members. This list isn’t finalized but will provide a glimpse of what the golf team are working on.

Details for tee time requests and times that are available for each club will be finalized in August. All tee times must be booked by the CCC Golf Shop.

Please take this opportunity to experience some new or unfamiliar courses! Please contact the Golf Shop if for any questions.

TIP FROM THE PRO

HOW TO TAKE IT FROM THE RANGE TO THE COURSE

Have you ever stood over a shot on the golf course and said, “don’t hit this in the water” or stood over a putt and thought “don’t pull it”? These types of thoughts are very common when I talk to amateur golfers about what their mind is doing prior to and during a golf swing. Watching Scottie Scheffler win the PGA Championship recently got me thinking about what his greatest skill as a golfer is that continues to separate him from his peers. It did not take me long to realize that Scottie’s mind is his greatest strength as a golfer. In my observation, I came to the conclusion that Scottie has the ability to do these three things better than everyone else: commit, execute, and accept. These three things seem so simple but this three step process is critical to taking all of the work that we as golfers do in our practice and apply it on the course. Below are a few quick tips on how to apply these three skills on the course.

Commit - When you stand behind your shot, make a decision. What is my target? How far do I want to hit it? What club does that mean I will hit? Visualize the shot you are going to hit all the way from swinging the club, to the start line, to where the ball will land and how it will react once it lands.

Execute - Once you have that visual in your mind, clear all other thoughts and tell yourself “I am going to execute this shot.” Do not hit the shot until you are fully committed and all negative thoughts have left your mind and you have the clear picture of the shot you will execute.

Accept - This is a superpower in the game of golf! If you can commit and execute to the best of your ability with only positive thoughts, you have done everything you can. Now is time to accept the outcome and go on to the next shot and attempt the exact same process. Getting frustrated or reacting to a bad shot or unlucky break will only make the next shot more difficult.

The next time you go out on the course, try to keep these three simple steps in your mind throughout your round and play better golf!
