ABOUT CHARLESTON TREES
On Arbor Day 2023, Charleston Parks Conservancy relaunched of the Charleston Trees program Since then, the Conservancy has added over 1,400 trees to Charleston’s tree canopy through tree giveaways and the installation of the Mulberry Food Forest, and we will add 300 more by the end of 2024. Our goal is to donate 1,000 trees in 2025.
Charleston Trees was formed in the 1990s as a result of Mayor Riley’s initiative to plant 10,000 street trees in the City of Charleston. In 2015, Charleston Trees became a subcommittee of the Conservancy’s Programs committee, and starting in April 2023, we began a focused campaign to encourage businesses and residents to plant native or naturalized trees on their private property
The primary goal of Charleston Trees is to increase the urban tree canopy. A healthy urban tree canopy is essential to a community’s quality of life and resiliency against the effects of climate change.
We are dedicated to restoring the urban tree canopy in our communities through on-going tree giveaways and free educational opportunities like our Trees of our Gardens guided walks led by a certified arborist from Bartlett Tree Experts
Tree Giveaways: Tree giveaways in different areas of the city with a low tree equity score Residents gather to pick up their tree, pledge to care for it, and take part in a short training on planting and care. Four giveaways per year are planned with a goal to give away up to 250 trees each time.
Trees of our Roots/Gardens: Bartlett Arborists lead a tour around local parks to talk about tree maintenance and the most common issues and problems facing the health of the trees in your yard and neighborhood
Community plantings: We partner with local organizations and neighborhoods to plant 15-50 new trees at one time. Residents and property owners pledge to care for the trees, and the Conservancy provides free trees, tree care education, and organizes a planting day with the help of staff and volunteers.
DID YOU KNOW
In areas with lower economic resources, there is a 41% deficit in tree cover compared to more affluent areas, contributing to high heat island conditions, lowered air quality, less permeability for stormwater runoff, higher energy costs, and diminished quality of public spaces.
