FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Charleston Day School Families, As we settle in to the 2023-24 academic year and bid a fond farewell to the Class of 2023, I can’t help but reflect on the invaluable role that family plays in the rich tapestry of Charleston Day School. At Charleston Day, we are more than just an educational institution. We are a close-knit family, bonded by shared values, aspirations, and a commitment to fostering excellence in education. Our community is built on the foundation of trust, collaboration, and the unwavering support we extend to one another. Family is the cornerstone of our lives. It provides us with the love, guidance, and encouragement necessary to thrive and grow. In our school community, we have created an extended family, where students, parents, faculty, and staff come together to create an environment that nurtures both academic and personal growth. At CDS, family takes many forms. It is the

“It is through our collective efforts that we create a vibrant and thriving school community at Charleston Day School.” relationship between “Bigs and Littles” that allows a strong bond to form between younger and older students. It is the feeling of togetherness that is fostered by a sports team. It is the beauty of the relationships that are forged between students and faculty. It is the power of a strong partnership between school and family. And it is the strength of the commitment of the faculty and staff who strive each and every day to create an environment that allows students to soar. Our exceptional faculty members are not just educators; they are mentors, advocates, and role models who instill in our students the values of our Mission: scholarship, integrity, respect, and responsibility. They dedicate themselves to the art of teaching, igniting the spark of knowledge within young minds and empowering students to reach their full potential. Through their tireless efforts, our teachers foster an environment where each student is known, valued, and inspired to excel. Our school community extends far beyond the classroom walls. Indeed, the City of Charleston, with its rich history and proximity to our campus, provides students with the opportunity to learn through seeing and doing. All-in-all, the CDS family is strong and growing. In this issue of The Gateway we celebrate our newest alumni – the Class of 2023. Their futures are bright and options abound

Mrs. Arnstein greets students during back-to-school orientation. as they move forward with the strength and knowledge that a CDS education provides. Please be sure to take a look at the Alumni Profile featuring Curry Hagerty Uflacker, the write up recognizing Kindergarten teacher Garden Blincow as last year’s winner of the Excellence in Teaching Award, and the photos of the former faculty returning to celebrate each other and the school that they love. As we move forward, let us continue to cherish and foster the strong bond that defines our Charleston Day School family. Let us recognize the tremendous impact Charleston Day School has on the lives of our students and the lasting imprint this school family leaves on their educational journey. I am grateful for your unwavering dedication, support, and belief in the power of education. It is through our collective efforts that we create a vibrant and thriving school community at Charleston Day School. I am honored and privileged to be a part of this exceptional family. With warm regards,

CHARLESTON DAY SCHOOL

The CDS Family Puzzle Each Piece is Part of the Whole A school family contains many parts. Much like a puzzle, each piece has a unique shape and is necessary to complete the picture. At Charleston Day School, our students, faculty, and programming are all important pieces in our school puzzle. Each component builds a sense of belonging and creates the supportive environment that is a hallmark of the CDS experience. The Team Piece We all participated in the 8th grade boys’ magical basketball season this past winter. From first grade students to recently graduated alum, we attended games; we cheered; we held our breath, and we experienced the magic of a perfect season. In order to have success on the court, many elements have to come together. Ask Coach Whetzel. As Coach explained at our sports awards assembly in February, “We were fortunate to have Dean Williams join our 8th grade class this year, and he had a huge impact on a team with previously established relationships. Having such a talented player required something from the rest of the guys that often gets overlooked – sacrifice.”

FALL 2023

8th Spirit Day – The Class of 2023 extended family

The team sacrificed shots, playing time, and comfortable patterns for the good of the whole, and Dean had to learn to trust his new teammates on the court as well. Coach Whetzel reflected, “When we were running and sharing the ball, moving it from side to side with precision, it was a thing of beauty.” The talented players embraced their expanded basketball family and established a different rhythm that made the team stronger in the end. This team brought our CDS community together. The energy in the gyms during those last five games was palpable. The camaraderie and student support is something Coach Whetzel hopes we all can learn from moving forward. The Spirit Piece Spirit runs high during our annual Field Day. It is a day when 8th graders lead their team through a series of games on the field at James Island County Park. Winners earn points for their Red or Blue team, and team loyalty runs strong. More than the competition, the day provides a chance for younger and older students to strengthen their bonds. You can feel the friendship and spirit that permeates the day. When the community returns to campus following Field Day, there is always a new sense of camaraderie between younger and older students that is evident in the hallways and on the playground.

Former CDS 8th Grade Class Presidents: “The friendships in our class feel like a really large group of siblings…”

-Mary Motley Smith, Class of 2022

“I think it is safe to say that my classmates and I know each other pretty well. For instance, we don’t just know each other’s names and basic character traits. We know each other’s passions, likes, dislikes, as well as each other’s favorite foods and activities…” Field Day – Our youngest and oldest students support each other on Field Day.

The Sibling Piece Our Bigs & Littles program is often mentioned by our graduating eighth graders as one of their favorite CDS memories. Each first grade student is assigned a fifth-grade buddy, and the pair stays together throughout the next four years. Bigs and Littles meet regularly to read to each other, complete a partner project, or simply play games outside. Much like Field Day, the program builds connections between our older and younger students. It provides more leadership opportunities for our middle school students and is another touchpoint for our students to form close relationships with everybody on campus.

-Jack Josey, Class of 2021

“Collectively, my classmates and I have been ‘in this together’ for what seems like forever… My point is that unlike at other schools, we have spent an incredible amount of time together. We really aren’t just a class of students. We are a family– a very large family of 31 brothers and sisters.”

-Anna Sinkler, Class of 2020

The Home Away from Home Piece Have you attended a Monday morning assembly recently? There are many reasons to love this weekly tradition. The entire school comes together in one place to share information, listen to speakers, and reinforce the school’s mission of fostering scholarship, integrity, respect, and responsibility in our students. Assemblies set a positive tone for the week and give time to connect and strengthen our CDS family. Another important aspect of weekly assemblies is the privilege of listening to each eighth grader deliver a personal speech. The eighth-grade speeches are a rite of passage at Charleston Day School and allow us to celebrate the success and development of those students. One theme that surfaces in many speeches is the importance of family. And, as Liza Hood, class of '23, noted in her speech, the importance of our school family. “After eight years at Charleston Day School, I am able to reflect upon my time here and realize that my family is much larger than the people I see when I go home.” As eighth graders get closer to their graduation day each spring, they often comment about the closeness they feel with classmates and teachers.

Excellence in Teaching Award Congratulations to Garden Blincow, our phenomenal kindergarten teacher, who was named the 2022 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award. The Excellence in Teaching Award was started by an alumni family who wanted to recognize and thank the wonderful teachers and staff at Charleston Day School. Our School is filled with exemplary educators, and each year, the School seeks nominations from parents, current and former faculty members, and alumni for this prestigious award. At the awards ceremony, Mrs. Arnstein shared that "Miss Garden demonstrates excellence every single day. She has a deep sense of commitment and truly embodies the thought that every opportunity is an opportunity for teaching. She understands that the whole child matters and that teaching is a privilege and a gift to the future of our school."

TO N DAY SC OO

Mrs. Arnstein reflected about her visit to Charleston Day School as a candidate for the Head of School position many years ago. “I had the pleasure of watching Miss Garden in action. Even in that small moment, she was making a larger impact on our community. Something that she does with grace and compassion each and every day.” Congratulations to Mrs. Blincow on this important and well-deserved honor. BEYOND THE GATES: ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Curry Hagerty Uflacker '97 One Family, Two Sisters, Endless Impact How Hart and Curry Hagerty Uflacker transformed a personal vision into a family business— and how the CDS community fostered the idea of ties that bind Every visionary needs an integrator; at HART, Curry’s the one who gets things done. As CEO, she manages sales & marketing, day-to-day operations, and the numbers. Since joining her sister Hart in 2020, she’s led the opening of the flagship store, developed the management team, and expanded wholesale distribution into more than 200 luxury boutiques, destination resorts and spas. As ecommerce remains at the core of HART, Curry leads strategic partnerships and dropship accounts, such as their newest launch with The Gap. Prior to HART, Curry was head of marketing & PR for Easton Porter Group (EPG) from 2104-2020. Curry led all communication, digital marketing & partnerships and was an integral member of the strategic business development team for the luxury hospitality company with properties including Zero George Hotel, Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards, and five restaurants and event spaces. Before working at EPG, she was the Program Director for the nation’s largest consumer event for cooking and entertaining, overseeing more than 200 programs annually and partnerships with Food Network, the James Beard Foundation, and national sponsors and media partners. She even held a position as the Assistant to the First Lady of South Carolina - managing all scheduling, press and official state events at the Governor’s Mansion as well as directing the First Lady’s statewide health initiative. Curry received her MBA from the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina and an undergraduate degree from George Washington University. Curry lives in Charleston with her husband, son Hugo (4) and two incredibly fluffy Persian cats. Her personal goals for 2023 are to take a college level Portuguese literature class and finally learn to play pickleball. On the Charleston Day Family Our whole [immediate] family went to CDS, and our cousins went as well. It was way more than just the nuclear unit for us. It was a way for us to connect to our 1st and 14

2nd cousins too. My graduating class had 13 girls and six boys. We were incredibly close and still are. So it formed a real sisterhood for me in multiple ways. To this day, I can still name everybody in alphabetical order and probably list their phone numbers and their dogs’s names, too. I really do consider my Day School friends my anchor. On Charleston Day Memories One of my favorite things about CDS is how the school embraced the city as the classroom. From writing haikus about paintings at the Gibbes, matinees at the Dock Street, to being a junior docent at Drayton Hall, we really tapped into the arts & culture. Oh, and doing timed runs around Colonial Lake for Track Meet qualifications. The city was such an extension of a classroom and that’s something that I think is so valuable for creating communities. So it’s not just about the people, but it’s about the places.

One tradition that I loved was the speech contest. I was in it in 1994, and actually, my speech was about raising awareness for handgun violence. I didn’t place, but the real prize was roller-skating with Mrs. Dottie Rhett - every year she took all of the finalists to Hot Wheels for skating and pizza. On the Origin of a Family Business I give all the credit to Hart. She founded the brand in 2016, and I had always been her #1 champion and business sounding board. I was working in luxury hospitality marketing and loved it. I knew I always wanted to do my own thing but the path became very clear during COVID that there was a huge opportunity to take HART to the next level. I joined her in 2020 and haven’t looked back. On Working with my Sister Working with Hart is very rewarding. When we were growing up, my parents gave advice for dating—“same values, different interests”—and I think this sums us up well as business partners. Hart’s the Creative Director and leads all designs & production. My day-to-day is focused on marketing and strategic growth. Our skills are complementary. We make a good team. On Leadership and Presenting a United Front Lead with confidence and kindness and create a culture that fosters curiosity and creativity. We also want to surround ourselves with whip-smart women who get brain tingles from spreadsheets and genuinely love business. Confidence is a huge thing you learn at the School, and they really instilled confidence in me: in knowing how to write, knowing how to study, and just also having the social aspect that is Charleston Day does a great job cultivating— not only in terms of polishing manners and character, but also fostering a sense of curiosity that inherently opens you up to other people and points of views. And when we're hiring women at HART, you know, we're looking for people who possess those qualities, women who are confident and curious. And I think that that really was a core takeaway from our time at Charleston Day.

"I’m a risk-taker. On our mood board, we have a quote, 'Leap and net will appear' and that’s something that I live by."

On Business Milestones Some of our recent milestones include opening a pop-up concept in Boston’s Seaport neighborhood. It’s a retail incubator for direct-to-consumer brands to launch into new markets. The store is a success, and we can see its impact on online sales - especially the spike in New England orders. Seeing the brand live on its own in a huge city is like letting the baby leave the nest. Another fun partnership this year was with The Gap. I consulted with their team on building their dropship model. We have introduced a few exclusive ready-to-wear designs for The Gap, and they featured Hart and me for International Women’s Day. On Brand Values For centuries, jewelry has been supercharged with personal sentiment and talismanic meaning, especially family heirlooms and the contemporary ‘fine jewelry’ category. There are several incredible modern, ‘for women by women’ brands like Marla Aaron and Foundrae which tap into this jewelry ethos; however, there was nothing inspiring in the ‘costume jewelry’ space for women like ourselves who couldn’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on a solid gold necklace. The brand focus has shifted to ‘soulful adornment’ and expanded our designs to high-quality, personalized goldplated jewelry and beaded mantra bracelets. Our team’s north star is “Outer sparkle ignites inner spark.’ In other words, we want to create a brand and quality-yet-affordable designs that help a woman tell her personal story and empower her to live her most authentic life.

From the Chair, Board of Trustees

2023-2024 Board of Trustees

Dear CDS Families, Friends and Supporters,

Ross P. Hostetter, Chair James B. Hood ’91, Vice Chair David H. Kunes ’94, Treasurer Catherine M. Grant, Secretary Jessica B. Aaron Summerlin C. Anderson Judith Foley Arnstein, ex-officio Elizabeth H. M. Dawson Joseph J. Keenan David Maybank III ’75 Megan A. Phillips John E. Robinson Jihane S. Skaff Tameka L. Smalls-Robinson Zoë L. Stephens ’87

After our final board of trustees meeting for the 2022-2023 school year, we had the pleasure of hosting a reception with former CDS board members. In an impromptu fashion, each trustee offered a window into their connection to CDS – stories of challenges faced and opportunities seized, bonds formed and lives touched – each connection personal and each revealing a passion for CDS that burns bright, in many instances over decades of association with the school. These moments serve as a poignant reminder of the importance Charleston Day School plays in the lives of our community and of the responsibility we now have to steward the school in the great tradition of those that came before us. It is heartening to see the passion new board members and new families also bring to CDS, building on the legacy of commitment to CDS that ties back to the school’s founding. It is the collective effort of our ever-growing CDS family and the time, talents, and resources that each generation of students, faculty, parents and grandparents imparts that breathes life into the Day School and secures its future. On behalf of the CDS board, I want to thank you all for your efforts and contributions in support of CDS. Fundamentally, your support enables the school to deliver on its mission. In the 2022-2023 school year, we continued our enviable trend of 100% board and faculty participation in our Gateway Giving campaign, exceeding our fundraising goal. We began the year with an oversubscribed kindergarten and concluded with a 97% first choice high school placement rate – a testament to the hard work of our graduating class, their teachers and families. The board approved a tuition remission plan for faculty to help attract and retain our most valued resource, our teachers. We made significant strides in laying the groundwork for the next chapter in CDS’s story with the acquisition of 7 Magazine Street and subsequently the Fielding Home for Funerals property, significantly increasing the footprint of our campus and securing our “Forever Home” in downtown Charleston.

The board also elected five new trustees who began their service this 2023-2024 school year. Please join me in welcoming Jessica Aaron, Hunter Dawson, Meg Phillips, Tameka Smalls-Robinson and Jihane Skaff to the CDS board. Together, they represent a wealth of backgrounds, experience and perspectives and a shared passion for CDS. Please also join me in thanking departing board members Robertson Allen, John Hand, Emmie Hershey, Barclay McFadden and Tee Parker for their invaluable contributions to the fabric of CDS through collectively close to 30 years of board service. As it was with each generation that came before us, now is the most important moment in the life of CDS. It is a privilege to serve at this time of great opportunity and to be in the company of so many members of the CDS family dedicated to its success. Yours Sincerely,

Ross P. Hostetter Chair, Board of Trustees

Happy Birthday, Mr. Jaycocks! Mr. Edgar S. Jaycocks, Head of School for 23 years, celebrated his 80th birthday this past year. Mr. Jaycocks was instrumental in so many facets of CDS. As Head from 1974 to 1997, his devotion and commitment to Charleston Day School never wavered.
