Charleston-area filmmaker Matthew Pridgen recently released a jarring documentary that calls on White Christians to examine how America’s racist religious, economic and political systems helped Donald Trump win two presidential elections.

Pridgen’s full-length documentary, Sins of Our Fathers, is a graphic timeline that combines the hate speech of segregationists with the brutality of slavery through a violent Jim Crow era up to the nine murders at Emanuel AME Church Pridgen by a White gunman who wanted to start a race war.

The film is not intended for Black audiences, said Pridgen, whose upbringing in a conservative White family in Charleston’s affluent Papa South of Broad neighborhood shaped his initial views on race, religion and politics.

Instead, he and his co-producer, the film’s director Joey Papa, made the documentary for White Christians to show how their overwhelming support for Trump is rooted

in the nation’s original sin of slavery.

Pridgen narrates the film on camera, but he intended not to be in it. He realized the story he wanted to tell was also his story as an evangelical Christian and former lifelong Republican who voted for Trump in 2016.

Many evangelical Christians are trapped, he warned, in an ideological bubble that forces them to vote against their self-interests. The film challenges people of faith and conscience to see America’s past and present through a new lens.

“Telling my story is a bridge because white conservatives don’t listen to outside groups,” he said. “I was in the bubble, and I came out of the bubble. Let’s look at the bubble, and let’s pop the bubble and move on (to) overcome our inherent biases and form a more perfect union,” he said.

Tried to kill himself

The film currently is showing on Amazon Prime. Pridgen and Papa said they hope to organize screenings in Atlanta and Charleston, where the film is set and has repeated references to the Holy City and images of local church steeples.

In the film, Pridgen reveals his unintentional path to Christianity, which he said nearly cost him his life.

As a rising senior majoring in economics at Duke University, Pridgen said he was an atheist drug addict who took a variety of illegal substances nearly daily.

A drug dealer once warned him about his

South Carolina’s highways in 2025 weren’t the dieways they were in recent years. As of Dec. 29, 153 fewer people died in 2025 than the 1,032 who died the year before, according to preliminary data from the S.C. Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Last year across the state, at least 879 people died — also far fewer than the 1,038 in 2023 and the 1,081 people in 2022. Of those who died last year in traffic incidents, 152 were pedestrians (an increase of two deaths) and 137 were motorcyclists (up six deaths).

In Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties, 113 people died from Jan. 1 to Dec. 29, 2025. The year before, 135 died, according to DPS figures.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been hard at work since 2024 dumping sand on the barrier islands of Isle of Palms (IOP) and Sullivan’s Island as part of an ongoing renourishment project at Breach Inlet.

“We’ve done a big beach renourishment in 2008 and in 2018, and we were assuming we could hold out until 2028 — you know, a 10-year cycle on these things,” said Isle of Palms Mayor Phillip Pounds. “But given the erosion that was happening at Breach Inlet and in Wild Dunes, we knew we needed to accelerate that.” In 2025, the town spent about $400,000 on renourishment.

It’s a similar story at neighboring Sullivan’s Island, which has spent $646,000 in February 2025 to spread 20,000 dump trucks worth of sand, according to media reports. But a mid-October nor’easter washed away half of that sand — and all the money sunk into it.

In fact, if you’ve recently strolled along the sands of any beach along the East coast, you’ve probably noticed similar problems.

An estimated 80% to 90% of beaches are affected. And unfortunately, it’s more evident on Lowcountry barrier islands.

The culprit? Beach erosion, a phenomenon influenced by rising sea levels and increasing extreme weather events due to climate change. Local residents and experts reported major erosion at Breach Inlet in 2019. Since then, the high-water line has retreated 40 meters to 70 meters.

Options are limited

While sand nourishment like that done at Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island and Folly Beach can be visually appealing, it is costly and a temporary solution to beach erosion, as evident on Sullivan’s Island. Experts

encouraged city officials at IOP to look at other, long-term solutions, including sea walls, groins, jetties and more.

“Some of the residents in that area down at Ocean Boulevard near Breach Inlet have also paid to have a consultant come in and give some recommendations on what they think could be done,” said Isle of Palms City Council member Rusty Streetman. “We heard a presentation by a company that was recommending that we take a look at a number of different things, and one of them being a terminal groin that would be attached to the end of the island at Breach Inlet.”

Some city officials said they were not too open to the idea of building a permanent structure at the inlet, with hesitation that downdrift erosion would worsen the situation.

“The city is not a big proponent of those things,” said Isle of Palms Councilman Blair Hahn. “Because every time you build a groin, it might help one particular property owner, but it’s to the expense of another one.”

To make matters more difficult, the city gets little state funding for beach repair projects, leading many to stick with the somewhat cheaper option of sand nourishment. The next grooming is already slated for early 2027 and is estimated to cost close to $30 million, according to Pounds.

“You’re limited on what you can do in South Carolina as far as hard structures,” the mayor said. “We’ve had conversations about what else we can be doing, whether it’s a hard structure or a groin, but right now we’re focused on, ‘Let’s get this beach renourishment project permitted.’ ” Hahn said he believed the best thing to do is to “stop developers from developing in areas that we know are accretional and erosional on a cycle, both at the west end and east end of the Isle of Palms,” he said.

“It is Wild Dunes and at Breach Inlet, both areas, that are currently hot spots — areas CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

What is beach erosion?

With increased water temperatures, glaciers and ice sheets are melting. That is exacerbating rapid sea level rise and an increase in the number of extreme weather events like hurricanes. And those, in turn, result in higher tides, flooding and stronger waves. These are the perfect recipe for beach erosion.

Even without climate change factors, beaches will naturally experience cycles of accretion and erosion on durations of days and years. Breach Inlet between Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island is currently on an erosional cycle, experts say. Its notorious shifting channels have also exacerbated the erosion process, with currents so strong that a city ordinance bars visitors from swimming in the inlet.

“You’re pushing the whole Atlantic Ocean into this very narrow point when the tide is rushing in,” said Sullivan’s Island Director of Resilience and Natural Resource Management Rebecca Fanning. “Just thinking about the force of the ocean twice a day coming in that narrow channel, I mean, that’s a lot of power that can move a lot of sand.”

With the promise of more extreme storms on the horizon, such as the nor’easter in October 2025, city officials will likely continue to address beach erosion for many years to come. And homeowners will continue to pay the price.

“You just have to pay attention to nature and hopefully not get in the way when nature is moving,” said Island of Palms City Councilman Blair Hahn, who added that that’s “just the facts” of living on a barrier island. “In my house, we’re set up that if a hurricane comes, we lock the door, we leave, and if everything is washed away, well, that’s the price you pay for where you get to live.”

that have had erosion and accretion for my entire lifetime.”

Public versus private property

While Isle of Palms appears committed to short-term solutions such as sand nourishment projects, one resident looked to more permanent solutions.

Homeowner Rom Reddy reportedly took matters into his own hands when he built an unauthorized seawall for his home on the inlet. The move sparked a controversial legal battle over property rights. In October, S.C. Administrative Law Chief Judge Ralph K. Anderson III ruled the wall must be torn down, but in November, he overturned his own ruling and allowed it to stay — for now.

mission it would be too late to return to land.

He said was high on LSD. But then he sobered up to realize his peril.

“I am going to die out here,” he recalled saying to himself. “That is when I gave my life to Jesus, and God gave me the strength to keep going. He saved me for a purpose. It is a miracle for me to survive for 18 hours in the ocean.” He came ashore at Kiawah Island.

Life with a purpose

Pridgen and his wife, Nicole Pridgen, started a youth mentorship program on Charleston’s Eastside, an area he had avoided because of its perceived dangers.

As he ministered in the community, Pridgen started to see how race is used to manipulate people. “Although I was hesitant about Trump, I felt I couldn’t vote against the abortion issue,” he said.

“One of the myths we (as White people) tell ourselves is that these poor Black people are poor because they are lazy, they are on welfare or they are drug dealers or whatever,” he said.

As he became familiar with the Eastside and its residents, Pridgen said he saw the “dark history of the political movement I once supported.”

That sentiment led Pridgen to “unravel how the modern Republican Party has pulled on those racial fears (that supported) Trump’s rise to power on a very racial platform,” he said.

A different life experience

Unlike Pridgen, Papa grew up in a racially diverse neighborhood in New Jersey near

the beaches. Pounds said he believed the city, by undergoing sand renourishment at the inlet, is protecting public property.

“We’re protecting an asset, and that asset is the beach,” the mayor said. “It’s not someone’s home necessarily. If they feel strongly that they’re in peril or that they want to do something more than what the city is doing, then they are allowed to do that.

“State law lets you start doing emergency work when the water is within 20 feet of a structure,” the recently reelected mayor said. “We can only kick in once water gets that close to a house or a pool. … Before the last two years, the city rarely did emergency work. It was really up to the homeowners to protect their property.”

Both Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island encourage residents to get their own permits through the state Department of Environmental Services to put up sandbags, scrape their own sand and even rebuild their own dunes with vegetation.

Only permanent structures, such as seawalls, are not permitted.

New York City. Producing the documentary educated him about racial issues in America, said Papa, who now lives in Tampa. “I had knowledge of (segregation and Jim Crow laws), but I had never gone deep into it.”

While editing the film, Papa became emotionally overwhelmed by the images of lynchings and other violence directed at people of African descent, he said.

“There were many, many times I had to stop and cry and grieve and pray,” he said. “The atrocities are so horrific. I never thought it was that. In my mind, it was segregation. Two different sides of the waiting room, but not the lynchings.”

Pridgen said he still identifies as an evangelical Christian — even though the religious term has been corrupted by politics.

“My heartbeat is to share the gospel, and I certainly have always identified that way, but I don’t identify with what most evangelicals do. I hate to see that they’ve hijacked the term to make it a political movement.”

The man told officers he suspected the culprit to be his “current romantic partner.” We don’t often use the Blotter to give relationship advice, but you might want to consider making this an “ex-romantic partner.”

July 17: The grandest larceny North Charleston on July 5 responded to the reported theft of a bounce house after the owner allegedly rented it to someone else for an event, and one of the guests apparently took it before it could be returned.

This might be one of the most difficult items to steal we’ve ever seen successfully stolen, and frankly, we’re just as impressed as we are confused.

May 23: Get David Duchovny on the phone A North Charleston man on May 15 told city police that somebody apparently stole more than $2,000 in construction materials from a Cross County Road construction site. Security footage captured lights turning on and off in the area, but no suspect.

Extra creepy: A stack of cabinets in one frame and gone in the next.

Come on, you can practically hear the X-Files theme.

March 28: Keep us posted?

Mount Pleasant police received a call on March 15 from a woman claiming a man was trying to steal her house, and that he had cloned her using “deep fake technology” after a dispute with a police officer in Canada. She then added that the man is involved with Dragon Con (a national pop-culture convention held

in Atlanta), which she said is a cover for a human trafficking crime ring.

Officers said they would document the information. OK. Feb. 21: You wouldn’t get it A North Charleston woman on Feb. 13 reported to police that someone had broken into her storage unit on Dorchester Road and stolen more than $2,000 in power tools and $500 in other items, including a full-size mannequin and a set of vehicle headlights.

Man, we’re never going to understand modern sculpture art, are we?

Jan. 24: Yeah, very inconspicuous Charleston police on Jan. 13 discovered a listing on Facebook Marketplace for what they confirmed to be property stolen from the seller’s grandparents. Items listed for sale included a space heater, a wine rack and a lemon tree (yes, an actual tree), but the big-ticket item that tipped everybody off? An antique knight’s armor statue valued at $500. The guy sold it for $50.

The investigation is ongoing.

he Charleston City Paper remains committed to solid local and state news coverage buttressed by an opinion section that provides leadership, advice and criticism about how the community is dealing with vital issues.

A look back at 2025’s publications illustrates the newspaper’s dedication to socially responsible news and opinion coverage.

A few examples: Senior editor Herb Frazier wrote several stories on a controversial College of Charleston project that proposed a new dorm for Coming Street. The problem? Under a paved parking lot, the land may be home to thousands of graves of enslaved Africans, Native Americans and others.

Also in news, Statehouse bureau chief Jack O’Toole and news editor Skyler Baldwin outlined the potentially dangerous world of kratom, which some say is natural pain relief and others call “gas station heroin.” O’Toole’s ongoing reports from the Statehouse provided the most insightful coverage in the state from a weekly newspaper. Baldwin’s attention to development, health care and governance yielded huge benefits for readers.

Meanwhile, arts editor Maura Hogan brought a new depth to coverage of cultural issues through reviews and stories that give readers better insights into music, art, theater and more.

Similarly, former food editor Connelly Hardaway and new food editor Becky Lacey helped readers better understand the everchanging world of food — the number one subject for engaged readers — in the tourist-popular Lowcountry. And we’re all thankful for Vincent Harris’ weekly music coverage.

The City Paper’s election coverage in news and editorials also highlighted the city of Charleston’s ongoing challenges with transparency in government, including but not limited to refusing to answer routine questions that the public has a right to know. Let’s hope things get better in 2026 with three new

council members dedicated to more openness in government.

Tips of the hat to cartoonists Robert Ariail and Steve Stegelin for keeping their pens sharp and wit sharper in weekly offerings that keep public officials on their toes. Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation.

3. Be smarter about education.

Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras.

4. Conduct public business in public.

Be transparent in public business.

Stop the secrecy.

5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community.

6. Engage in real racial conciliation.

If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow.

7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone.

8. Develop Union Pier at scale.

Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate.

9. Build and follow a 50-year plan.

Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan.

10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage.

Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

In the days before everything electronic, one holiday brought a Hot Wheels race track. Another year, Santa apparently sent a BB gun first to a grandfather to do something that made it impossible to shoot actual BBs. Then there was the chemistry set used unsuccessfully to concoct a special formula to blow up things.

Thinking back to all sorts of gifts (including ugly sweaters) brings a series of chuckles and fond memories.

S.C. House Speaker Pro Tem Tommy Pope, R-York, particularly recalls getting Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, which he says were a lot sturdier than the ones offered now: “You could take out your aggression on your siblings and ‘knock their block off’ without getting a beating from your parents,” he said. “Considering this was the era of Jarts (lawn darts) and BB-gun and bottle rocket fights, my parents were probably relieved we were playing Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots — even though we were in the house making noise. At least no one had to go to the emergency room!”

Senate Minority Leader Brad Hutto, R-Hutto, has a vivid Southern holiday favorite: “Mine was getting a shotgun at Christmas when I was 12 and killing a deer that afternoon.”

Former state Rep. Jimmy Bailey of Charleston said his favorite Christmas memory was of providing presents to youths who might not otherwise have gotten gifts. “Several years ago, my son was approached by a lady who told him she and her children experienced holiday cheer because of our gifts,” Bailey said. “So my favorite gift is seeing the joy of these families.”

Charleston philanthropist Linda Ketner says she loved the red bike with training wheels she got when she was about 5: “I lost my mind! It represented that I was a ‘big girl,’ and it represented freedom and adventure,” she said. “We lived in a very small town at that point, with lots of dirt roads, few drivers and no predators. Former Greenwood editor Richard Whiting also recalled a family treasure: “One of the greatest gifts was in 1966 when my dad returned from his tour of duty in Thailand.”

Fair elections advocate Lynn Teague of Columbia remembers a special Madam Alexander doll she got when she was 4. “I only learned later that my mother had to save money for quite a while to buy her. After years of doll tea parties and a lot of quality time together, Suzie retired, but she sits even now in my bedroom, a reminder of the best of my childhood and my mother’s love.”

Former Lancaster County Administrator Steve Willis apparently had an itch to be a volunteer firefighter when he was about the same age: “My grandmother got me a toy red fire truck that connected to a garden hose and squirted water from the hoses on the truck,” he recalled. “Obviously having such a neat toy meant my friends and I needed things to extinguish.

“For a while, my grandmother’s backyard consisted of small burnt areas where we extinguished countless grass fires, toy soldiers, old plastic cars and other miscellaneous items that were sacrificed to the fire gods.”

Rolling back affirmative action and DEI

With the Trump administration threatening to eliminate federal grants for state and local governments that don’t end their affirmative action and diversity, equity and inclusion programs, Gov. Henry McMaster issued an executive order on Dec. 3 directing agencies to ignore state laws that set goals for minority contracting opportunities. GOP leaders in the state legislature have pledged to follow

up in 2026 with a full repeal of the goals.

Also up for consideration in 2026 are bills ending all “quotas” in state agencies and universities and adding new reporting requirements to ensure that college admissions are “merit based.”

Juvenile justice

Despite a recent pledge by S.C. House GOP leaders to “crack down” on juvenile crime in 2026, members of the House committee appointed to address the problem say they’re taking a measured look at the issue.

“We want to love these children — all our children,” Chairman Brandon Cox, R-Berkeley, said in November 2025, when describing the committee’s goals.

Among the reforms

they’re considering: changes to the way children are tried in adult courts, expansion of community programs aimed at reducing teen violence and an end to “status offenses” — that is, acts that are only illegal when committed by minors, such as truancy.

Highway reform

According to members of the House Ad Hoc Transportation Modernization Committee, everything is on the table in current efforts to get traffic moving in S.C. — except an increase in the state’s $0.28-per-gallon gas tax.

Instead, they say they’re focused on potential changes such as increasing electric vehicle registration fees, adding tolls to roads in congested areas and asking county governments to take on more maintenance responsibilities for state roads.

“Local governments … could do it more efficiently, [but] they’re afraid they just wouldn’t be able to afford it,” Committee Chairwoman Shannon Erickson told Statehouse Report in October. “It’s up to us

With one of the highest nominal, or official, income tax rates in the Southeast, S.C. House GOP leaders are under increasing pressure from their conservative base to cut dramatically, or even eliminate, the state income tax. The challenge: basic math.

Under current law, most S.C. residents pay far less than the official 6% top rate thanks to generous deductions, credits and exemptions. In fact, the average resident now pays only 2.9% — one of the lowest actual rates in the country. And cutting the state’s top rate with a flatter tax almost inevitably increases most people’s taxes — a fact that Republican leaders learned the hard way last year when voters rebelled against a highly touted flat-tax bill after learning it would lead to higher tax bills

for 60% of state residents.

Nevertheless, Statehouse leaders say they’ll try again in 2026, with the ultimate goal of following Florida and Texas down the path of full income tax elimination.

Fix the pay raise

As the 2025 legislative session began last January, lawmakers’ pay had been frozen since the mid-1990s — $10,400 a year in salary plus an additional $1,000 a month for undefined “in-district expenses.” But when they voted in June to raise their in-district expense checks to $2,500 — essentially, an $18,000 raise — critics cried foul.

What’s more, when the S.C. Supreme Court struck down the raise in November 2025, ruling that it violated the state constitution’s ban on any legislative pay increase without an intervening election, members lost not just the additional $18,000, but the $12,000 they were getting before. Expect quick action on that issue in 2026.

Judicial selection

Unlike in the federal government where judges are appointed by the president and approved by the U.S. Senate, S.C. judicial candidates are nominated by a committee controlled by the legislature, which then votes to decide which ones are appointed.

Critics have long called that process an affront to separation of powers, and a source of corruption among lawyer-legislators who practice before judges whose appointment and reappointment they control.

This year, GOP leaders, backed by a billionaire Isle of Palms businessman whose sea wall has been tied up in S.C. courts since 2024, are promising reform with a bill that would give the governor appointment power over all 12 members of the nominating committee.

Abortion

After enacting a six-week abortion ban with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother in 2023, GOP members of a Senate committee stood aside and allowed their Democratic colleagues to kill a near-total ban in November of last year.

But that doesn’t mean abortion won’t be back on the agenda in 2026, with powerful House Speaker Murrell Smith, R-Sumter, backing a bill to outlaw the use of abortion-inducing pills such as mifepristone and misoprostol to end a pregnancy.

Concurrency

With S.C. among the five fastest-growing states in each of the past four years, local residents from the Upstate to the Lowcountry say their roads, schools, and water and sewer systems are buckling under the strain.

2026: concurrency. Under bills sponsored

by Beaufort Republican Sen. Tom Davis in the Senate and Charleston Democratic Rep. Spencer Wetmore in the House, local governments would be given the authority to ensure that development and infrastructure stay in sync.

“It’s not that people hate new housing,” Wetmore told Statehouse Report in August.

“It’s that they get upset about the overcrowding that comes with it when we don’t control the timing.”

DOGE SC

Though not precisely defined at this point, GOP leaders continue to say they plan to “DOGE” South Carolina in 2026, with a particular eye on rolling back business regulations and eliminating government waste.

That’s a fight S.C. Democrats say they look forward to, openly mocking GOP legislators for hunting waste, fraud and abuse in a state they’ve run for a generation.

“The Republicans have held the House, Senate and Governor’s Mansion for twentyplus years,” Charleston Democratic Sen. Ed Sutton told Statehouse Report in 2025. “If there’s any waste in the state, it’s because they put it there.”

Immigration

With President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration continuing, S.C. GOP House leaders are pledging their support.

One item with broad Republican support in both bodies: a bill that would require all local law enforcement agencies with jails to enter into what are called 287(g) agreements with the federal government, which effectively deputize local officials to act as immigration agents in their jurisdictions.

likely won’t be tackling

With conservative GOP supermajorities in both chambers, some popular measures with strong Democratic support aren’t expected to make it to the floor in 2026.

Those include bills to expand Medicaid and to close the Charleston loophole that allowed racist killer Dylann Roof to buy the gun he used to murder nine parishioners at Charleston’s Emanuel A.M.E church in 2015.

The remaining question mark? A hate crimes bill, which has passed the S.C. House overwhelmingly in each of the last two sessions, only to die in the Senate both times without a vote. Advocates say they’ll push to break that logjam in the upper chamber before the 2026 session ends in May.

Lowcountry leaders look ahead to 2026 challenges, successes

sales tax referendum 1 Half-cent to get a second try

A new half-penny sales tax referendum is on the horizon, with county leaders weighing options for what should be included after the tremendous failure of the 2024 referendum vote. With the massive (and expensive) Interstate 526 expansion project finally off the table, city and county officials are hopeful for more community backing to get funding for long-awaited transportation projects.

“Nothing has been determined yet,” said Charleston County Council Vice Chairman Larry Kobrovsky. “That has to be a top issue for the county. This referendum will determine what we do for the next 25 years, and I’m hoping we can put up something that’s transparent, fiscally responsible and better set to address our needs.”

Kobrovsky said he hopes to see a bigger focus on rising tides, green space and a greater number of smaller projects with big impacts in this year’s referendum.

With the historic Charleston peninsula under constant pressure from rising sea levels and storm surge, daytime flooding from even mild rain events now vexes leaders. Several projects over the years have sought to protect residents and visitors better from floodwaters.

One such project is the high-impact Low Battery extension project. With the first several phases already completed, the final phase is set to wrap up in early 2026.

“My wife and I took a full walk of the Low Battery for the first time recently,” said Charleston City Councilman Mike Seekings. “This is a huge give-back to the public sector, and that’s what makes working for the city so great.”

Seekings also mentioned other water projects aimed at boosting the city’s resiliency, including the Calhoun West Drainage Improvement Project.

Councilman Ross Appel also mentioned the South Windermere Basin project, one of the most significant stormwater infrastructure and sewer treatment investments in West Ashley’s history, is set to break ground in 2026.

Pier work underway 3 Union behind the scenes

While visible updates to the large-scale Union Pier redevelopment project have slowed, work is underway behind the scenes.

Local philanthropist Ben Navarro, who purchased the site in 2024, has said he wants to be a “steward” to the historic land, and has slowed progress to take in as much information as possible before breaking ground.

“I don’t know how much of this they’re sharing now,” Appel said of the behindthe-scenes work going on. “But when this does become public, people are going to be blown away by the level of analysis across a multitude of different spectrums.

In a way, it’s almost completely changing the game in terms of how development is approached in this region.”

City leaders and advocates took an eight-day trip in November to three European cities to better understand how to develop Union Pier so it fits in here and deals with rising waters. Though details weren’t made public ahead of the trip, those who went said it was enlightening.

Seekings said while there is no one project that looks to address public safety coming in 2026, it remains high on his list of priorities for the peninsula.

“Any time you make the city a safer, more liveable place, it improves the quality of life for everyone here,” he said. “That’s our No. 1 job: providing our police and fire departments with the tools to keep our community safe.”

The city of Charleston is aiming to add 3,500 affordable housing units to the Charleston peninsula by 2030 as part of what Mayor William Cogswell is calling Project 3500, and this year offers several chances to get a jump on the numbers.

“There has been a lot learned about affordable housing and how to do it right over the years,” Appel said. “Mixed-income housing is a big part of that — not just people of superlow economic status alone on an island by themselves, but integrated into healthy, more dynamic communities. This is a real exciting opportunity for 2026 and beyond.”

Appel pointed to Charleston County’s large property on Morrison Drive as one project the city is interested in for affordable housing, though its future remains uncertain. On the other side of the peninsula, he said redeveloping a lot of the Charleston Housing Authority’s stock could provide “tremendous opportunity” for affordable housing in the city by increasing housing density.

Shokudô brings Japanese tavern dining to King Street When Shokudô opened in late October, it introduced high-end Japanese izakaya (tavern) dining to the Charleston peninsula.

Tokyo native and Executive Chef Masatomo “Masa” Hamaya is at the helm of the new project by Indigo Road Hospitality Group.

In a city where every week seems to see a new restaurant opening (or closing), what sets Shokudô apart is a holistic approach seen in everything from its design to florals to the menu. The restaurant oozes balanced, thoughtful hospitality.

Japanese tavern bites

“My vision for Shokudô was always to create a Japanese tavern,” said Hamaya.

“Something that feels casual, lively and really pairs well with the beverage program. I wanted it to be approachable. If you walk down a street in Tokyo and pop into a Japanese tavern spot, that’s the feeling I’m after here.”

Much of the menu is rooted in the robata grill, which takes center stage in the open kitchen and adds a theatrical element to the Shokudô experience.

“The word ‘robata’ comes from an old farmhouse style in Japan, which is basically a hearth or fire pit in the middle of the home where people would gather, make tea and stay warm in the winter,” Masa noted.

“In the United States, that idea translates more to a grill.”

Shokudô’s menu is not just about the robata. Hamaya has created a menu with small plates that are meant to be shared, which allows diners to try different tastes.

This also allows people to step out of their comfort zone, a goal of Hamaya’s.

Menu highlights include uni toastettes and a Tarvin shrimp claypot as well as temaki (hand rolls) like beef tartare with trout roe and kakiage, fish and vegetable tempura with miso cream. The OG ramen has bok choy, chin tan (broth) and charshu (pork belly), and the whole fish tempura comes with orange ponzu and scallions.

Several menu items like the karaage chicken namban (chicken thighs with egg salad) come with masaracha, Hamaya’s fantastic house-made hot sauce.

Charleston Jazz — one of the Lowcountry’s cornerstone nonprofit arts organizations dedicated to performance, education and community outreach — has unveiled a vibrant 2026 calendar that reflects its deep roots in jazz tradition and its ongoing commitment to presenting world-class artistry.

The coming year invites locals and visitors to experience jazz in its many forms, from intimate ensemble work to large-scale orchestral performances.

“The upcoming season is going to be another banger,” said Dr. Robert Lewis, director of Charleston Jazz, in a recent interview with the Charleston City Paper.

Lewis said the breadth of the 2026 calendar is what excites him most, but one performance stands out.

“Danilo Pérez [April 18] was the pianist for the Wayne Shorter Quartet,” Lewis said, “which is definitely on the short list of the most important and influential modern jazz groups of all time. He has been a hero of mine since college. His album Panamonk was extremely important to me.”

“I love the opportunity to work with all these fantastic musicians to create unforgettable shows,” Lewis added.

Here’s a look at Charleston Jazz’s 2026 schedule.

Charleston Jazz Festival

(April 13–21) The centerpiece of the organization’s calendar remains the Charleston Jazz Festival.

The nine-day celebration brings international artists and local talent together across some of the city’s most iconic venues, offering a wide spectrum of performances — from club-style intimacy to high-energy mainstage concerts.

The Alfredo Rodríguez Trio, blends Cuban musical traditions with contemporary jazz language in a program that highlights virtuosic piano work and dynamic ensemble interplay.

Beyond the festival, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra — the organization’s flagship 18-piece ensemble led by Lewis — enters its 18th season with six concerts at Charleston Music Hall.

The season opens Feb. 7 with Ode to Billie Holiday, featuring vocalist Tonya Nicole in a tribute to one of jazz’s most iconic voices, balancing faithful interpretation with contemporary nuance.
