Christmas Message from the Mayor
A
s we come together at the close of another year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the strength, pride, and sense of community that make Chapleau such a special place to call home. 2025 was a remarkable year for our community. Events such as the Chapleau Pike Ice Fish Derby, Carnival Weekend, Canada Day celebrations, the Gold Rush Nationals Drag Races, and the Fall Fair were tremendous successes and continue to grow year after year. These events showcase the best of Chapleau — our volunteers, local organizations, businesses, and residents who come together to create memorable experiences for all ages. Thank you to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and enthusiasm. Your commitment is what makes these events not only possible, but truly exceptional. As the holiday season approaches, I encourage you to take time to enjoy family and friends, and to reach out to those in our community who may need extra support. With winter upon us, please travel safely and take care on the roads. On behalf of Council, I extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who helps make Chapleau a vibrant and welcoming community. THE LAKE - with Two Big Wins at Berlin - Announces Local Screening
THE LAKE - the locally shot short film with an all Chapleau cast - had two big wins at the Berlin Film Fest International last week. Nominated for 5 awards, the film took home Best Short Film, with Logan Taylor winning Outstanding Actor in a Short Film. "These two awards honour the tremendous work of the whole
team but also recognize Logan's exceptional performance in this role. We couldn't be happier," said the film's director, Steve Schmidt. The 10 minute short film, which premiered at Cinefest Sudbury this past fall and recently opened the Sault Film Festival, will screen in Chapleau this Sunday December 21 at 7
pm at the CHS Cafetorium. The stars of the show will be in attendance and there will be a chance after the screening to talk with the cast and crew about their experience shooting the film, writing original music for the film, and traveling to film festivals. Admission at the door by donation. The film contains brief strong language.

Chapleau's preeminent vocal maven Keiko Laroque - 'Once Upon a December' - was no disappointment. Usually delivering up Christmas songs in years
past, the program this time around went for something different - and delivered. Moving deftly from classic show tunes to country pop, from Edith Piaf to Bruno Mars, from French Renaissance to classic rock, it was the pitch perfect delivery of outstanding vocals that held the audience rapt as the show covered a vast musical terrain. Nimbly stage managed by Ceilidh-Ann O'Hearn, the show moved seamlessly from intimate solo performances to choral high spectacle, from youthful debuts to seasoned performers. 'Once Upon a December' was a joyous romp filled with drama, laughter and some stand out performances which culminated in an enthusiastic standing ovation.

There were many "tense moments" at the Chapleau Curling club in 1969 as 30 rinks competed for the Scott Thomson Memorial Trophy, the Sudbury Star reported. Rinks participating included Chapleau, Toronto, Mactier, Thessalon, White River and Pineal Lake. However, it was not "seasoned curlers" who emerged victorious at the end of the annual three day men's bonspiel, taking the trophy and first event. The rink skipped by James Crichton with Norman Creighton, Jim Lapp and Bruce Pellow, all former Chapleau High School students, who were currently attending post secondary institutions out of town, had come home for the bonspiel and won it. Just recently Jim Lapp commented on Facebook that he had spent many hours curling after school at the rink then located on Pine Street. Curling was a very popular sport for students at Chapleau High School for many years. It wasn't all curling though as the Star reported that a dinner was held at the Legion Hall on Saturday night and "lively entertainment" was provided in the club room on Friday and Saturday
Tense moments' at Chapleau Curling Club in 1969 but students win Scott Thomson Memorial Trophy in men's bonspiel nights with dancing to the music of the Rhythmaires, a popular orchestra of the day. The curling rink had undergone major renovations, especially to the club rooms in 1960 when George Collins was president and Keith Scott, vice president. Curling was introduced in Chapleau during the winter of 1885 just as the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived and the community was being established. There was apparently one sheet of ice on an open air rink on and empty lot on Lorne Street across from where the liquor store is now located. The winning rinks in the 1969 bonspiel sure reads like a "Who's Who" of men's curling in Chapleau and area from over 50 years ago. Here are the winners as reported by the Sudbury Star. Runners up in the first event were Keith Scott (skip), C.R. Groves, William Payette and Robert Harrison. In third place was Harvey Fortunato (skip), John Morin, Peter Bernier and
Lou Lingenfelter. In fourth was Dennis Tieman (skip) E. Pozzo, P. Bird, and Naddo Bracci of White River. Second event winner of the CochraneDunlop Trophy was J.G. 'Jiggs' Goldstein (skip), Ovide Cote, Guy McCrea and Jerry Henderson. Runners up were Paul Secker (skip), Con Schmidt, Billy Bromley and Ed Sutherland. Third was Toddy Collinson (skip), William McLeod, Don Ferguson and George Mayotte. Third event winners for the Charles W. Collins Trophy were Richard Hoath (skip), Peter Blackburn, Louis Cappellani and James Gemmell. In second place was Ovila Desbois (skip), Aubrey Slievert, Milton Vaillancourt and Mayrice Bouchard, of Pineal Lake. In third place was Charles Law (skip), George Elliott, Robert Bromley and Peter Witherspoon. The Chapleau Public Library recently added eight new sections depicting various aspects of life in Chapleau. Curling is one of them. They are all most interesting and I suggest you take a look.

Atelier « Tu comptes » à Chapleau pour les personnes aidantes
Un spectacle de Noël réussi avec les Chicklettes Dimanche dernier, le Centre culturel Louis-Hémon a accueilli le spectacle des Chicklettes, marquant la clôture de sa programmation pour 2025. Malgré la tenue d’un bingo le même jour, le public était au rendez-vous, prêt à profiter d’une ambiance festive et conviviale.Le spectacle était accompagné d’une Guignolée, permettant aux spectateurs de contribuer à une collecte de denrées pour la communauté. Grâce à la générosité des participants, cinq sacs de denrées non périssables ont été accumulés et seront distribués aux personnes dans le besoin.C’était une belle façon de terminer l’année : un spectacle de Noël rempli de musique, de joie et de partage, rassemblant la communauté autour de la magie des fêtes.
Club Maria Chapdelaine PÈRE NOËL : vrai ou non? À l'approche de Noël, de nombreux parents sont confrontés à la grande question: « Est-ce que le père Noël existe? ». Il est parfois difficile de trouver les bons mots, alors voici une façon, trouvée sur le Web, de l'aborder : Enfant : Papa, je pense que je suis assez vieux maintenant. Est-ce que le Père Noël existe pour vrai ? Papa : Ok, je suis d'accord que tu es assez grand. Mais avant de te le dire, j'ai une question pour toi. Tu vois, la « vérité » est un cadeau particulier. Une fois que tu sais quelque chose, tu ne peux plus l'ignorer. Savoir la vérité sur l'existence du Père Noël veut aussi dire que tu ne le verras plus jamais comme avant. Ma question est donc : es-tu sûr de vouloir savoir ? Brève pause ... Enfant : Oui, je veux savoir! Papa : Ok, je vais te le dire : oui, il y a un Père Noël! Enfant : Vraiment ? Papa : Oui, vraiment, mais ce n'est pas un vieil homme avec une barbe en habit rouge. Ça, c'est l'histoire qu'on raconte aux enfants. Vois-tu, les enfants sont trop jeunes pour comprendre la vraie nature du Père Noël, alors on leur explique d'une
façon qu'ils peuvent comprendre. La vérité, c'est que le Père Noël n'est pas une personne; c'est une idée. Pense à tous ces cadeaux que le Père Noël t'a apportés au fil des ans. Nous les avons achetés pour toi. Nous t'avons regardé les ouvrir. Crois-tu que cela nous a dérangés que tu ne nous aies pas remerciés ? Bien sûr que non! En fait, cela nous a fait grand plaisir. Vois-tu, le Père Noël est L'IDÉE DE DONNER POUR LE SIMPLE PLAISIR DE DONNER, sans attente, ni remerciement, ni reconnaissance. Quand j'ai vu cette femme s'effondrer dans le métro la semaine dernière et que j'ai appelé le 911, je savais qu'elle ne saurait jamais que c'était moi qui avais contacté l'ambulance. À ce moment-là, j'étais le Père Noël. Enfant : Oh! Papa : Alors maintenant que tu connais le secret, tu en fais partie. Toi aussi, tu dois devenir le Père Noël. Cela signifie que tu ne peux jamais révéler ce secret aux plus jeunes, que tu dois nous aider à choisir les cadeaux du Père Noël pour eux, et surtout, que tu devras saisir les occasions d'aider les gens. Compris? Aidons-nous les uns les autres ce Noël et dans la nouvelle année... soyons le Père Noël!
Dans le cadre de sa visite à Chapleau pour un spectacle de Noël, Natalie Nadon, représentante de l’UCFO, a profité de l’occasion pour offrir un atelier « Tu comptes » destiné aux personnes aidantes de la communauté.L’atelier s’est tenu au local de l’UCFO à Chapleau et avait pour objectif de soutenir et de valoriser le rôle essentiel des aidants, tout en leur offrant des outils pratiques pour mieux gérer leur quotidien. Les participantes ont pu échanger, partager leurs expériences et découvrir des ressources offertes par l’UCFO pour alléger leur rôle souvent exigeant.Les organisateurs et participantes ont salué cette initiative, soulignant l’importance de reconnaître et d’accompagner les personnes qui soutiennent quotidiennement leurs proches.

Multicultural Canada: Korean BBQ chicken thighs (NC) Canada has food options as diverse as the people who call it home. You can explore that variety and spruce up a high-protein dish like chicken thighs with this sweet and zesty recipe from chef Devan Rajkumar. It adds a flavourful punch to the classic chicken dinner: Korean Marinated BBQ Chicken Thighs Prep time: 2 hours Cook time: 25 minutes Makes: 4 to 6 portions Ingredients: Marinade: ¼ cup (60 ml) light soy sauce ¼ cup (60 ml) honey 1 tbsp (15 ml) sesame oil 1 tbsp (15 ml) rice vinegar 4 cloves garlic, finely grated 2 tbsp (30 ml) ginger, finely grated 1 tbsp (15 ml) gochujang Thighs:

8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs Tip: bone-in protein adds a juicier punch 1 tbsp (15 ml) sesame seeds, toasted 2 green onions, thinly sliced 4 shallots, diced ½ tbsp (7.5 ml) cooking oil Directions: Marinade: Place a small sauce pot on low heat and add the sesame oil, ginger and garlic. Cook for 1 minute, stirring frequently, until fragrant. Remove pan from the heat and whisk in remaining marinade ingredients. Return to heat and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes. In a baking dish, add the chicken thighs and cover with the marinade, making sure to evenly coat the chicken. Save a little bit of marinade to use when grilling. Cover and refrigerate for 90 minutes. Cooking: Preheat barbecue to 400°F (200°C). Remove chicken from the marinade and add salt to the thighs on both sides. Let chicken come back to room temperature before grilling. While the chicken rests, bring a small pan up to medium-high heat, add the cooking oil and diced shallots. Sauté until crispy, about 5 minutes. Remove shallots from pan and set aside on a paper towel to keep them crisp. Turn off half the grill and place the chicken skin-side-up for 15 minutes. Brush chicken with reserved marinade and flip thighs skin-side-down. Cook until the chicken’s internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Place chicken on a platter and top with green onions, sesame seeds and crispy shallots. Tip: Consider chicken that was raised without antibiotics or protein that helps support sustainable farming, like the options at Maple Leaf Foods.
