When B.W 'Bubs' Zufelt, who went on to become reeve of Chapleau during some of its most progressiveyears,openedChapleauBakerywithhis partnerandbrotherElvin'Ebby',onApril20,1931,he hadalotoffaithinthefutureofChapleau,despitethe hardships presented by the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Writing in the Chapleau Post, on the 25th anniversary of the bakery in 1956, Wilf Simpson wrote that the "weak infant bakery business" had grown"intohealthymanhood".
With limited capital and their faith in the future, the Zufelt brothers launched their business which became famous for not only the quality of its bread,butalsobuns,andtheextremelypopularhoney dippeddoughnuts.
"Of course," Bubs Zufelt told Wilf in an interview, "the cash represented our tangible assets. We had arranged for the business which included an ancient Chevrolet sedan, and we were loaded with stock -- 30 bags of flour received from Charles W. Collinsoncredit."
Born in North Bay, he learned the trade of baker there, and arrived in Chapleau about 1927 where he worked for Henry Pellow who was operating a bakery. When the brothers opened their firstbakery,itwaslocatedatthebackoftheD.Pilon house on Pine street, almost adjacent to the old ChapleauHighSchool.
Soon afterwards, the honey dipped doughnuts were introduced and he toldWilf that "In thosedaysthereweremanydayswhenthedoughnuts werelategettingintothestore.
"Ourfirstbatchwasgenerallyfinishedabout 10:30 in the morning -- just about recess at the high school about 50 feet distant. Those kids would pile into the bakery until you couldn't move and with

Byabout1936,ChapleauBakeryrelocatedto BirchStreetnexttoHenryPellow'sloghomenearthe intersectionofBirchandGreyStreets.
Shortly after he arrived in Chapleau, Bubs Zufelt met Elsie Hunt who was working in the post office,thedaughterofMr.andMrs.GeorgeHunt,my grandparents, and sister of my mother, Muriel E. (Hunt) Morris. They were married in St. John's AnglicanChurchonDecember30,1931.

Even though in the early years, running a bakerywasveryhardwork,upearlyinthemorningto get the ovens going and the bread mixed and rising, deliveringbreadtostoresandcustomers,thengetting boxesofbreadonthetrainsforcommunitiesalongthe CPR line, he started to become involved in the community.
He served as a township councillor from 1943 to 1947, and after defeating two opponents startedhiseightconsecutiveone-yeartermsasReeve in 1948 which in one year terms was only surpassed by G.B. Nicholson, the first reeve who served from 1901to1913.
In 1948, Chapleau was threatened by a devastating forest fire, but fortunately an evacuation was not required although all the preparations were made for it The fire did directly lead to the completion of Highway 129 the next year and the resultant economic stimulus with the arrival of new lumbercompaniestothearea.AtthesametimeReeve Zufelt, his council and the Chapleau Board ofTrade were actively pursuing having the Trans Canada HighwaygodirectlythroughChapleau.
Theywerealsoworkingtogetahighwaylink betweenChapleauandTimminswhichin1962would becomeHighway101afterhewasnolongerinoffice.
The failure of Chapleau to be on the Trans CanadaHighwayevenafterWellandS.Gemmell,the localMPPandcabinetminister,told2,200Chapleau citizens at the official opening of the Chapleau MemorialCommunityArenainFebruary1951,thatit wouldbe"definitelylocated"throughthecommunity wasamajordisappointment.TheChapleauPosthad declared "WE GOT IT!" in a headline and schools wereclosedincelebration.Thenewarenaaswellas the formation of the Chapleau Recreation Commission were among the achievements of the Zufeltyears.
In fact, Reeve Zufelt had a photo taken pointingtowherethehighwaywouldgotoSchreiber, and The Globe and Mail said he was "jubilant" that "half the world" would be driving down Chapleau's mainstreet.
Despite Chapleau's best efforts, the Trans Canada went along the much more expensive route alongLakeSuperiorfromSaultSte,Marie.Politicsat playofcourse.
Although Chapleau had a water plant and distribution system by about 1910, a sewage system hadbeenrejectedbytheratepayersbyonevoteinMr Nicholson's time as reeve -- which greatly disappointedhim.
However, such was not the case in Reeve Zufelt's time and by November 1950, the plant and systemwerecompleted,justbeforewintersetin.But, the council ran into trouble when one citizen vigorouslycomplainedthatcrewswereworkingona Sunday,contrarytotheLord'sDayAct.Maybeso,but theprojectwascompleted,andReeveZufeltwasreelectedforanotheryear
In the early 1950s, Chapleau appeared to be heading for a prosperous future as the Canadian PacificRailwaywasestablishingdieselrepairshops, twosoftdrinkbottlingplantsweresooninoperation, retailstoreswereexpandingandrenovating,theFox theatrereplacedtheRegent,anewstateoftheartpost office was opened, new housing was under construction, the Bank of Montreal arrived, World War II had ended and many who served in Canada's armed forces were now home, married and raising families.

Lastweek,LoblawCos.Ltd.,aswellasits parent company, George Weston Ltd., agreed to pay$500milliontosettleaclass-actionlawsuitfor their part in a 14-year industry-wide bread pricefixing scheme. It's alleged that Loblaws, along with other large grocery chains such as Metro, Sobeys, Walmart Canada, and Giant Tiger, were all involved in a conspiracy to fix the price of bread between 2001 and 2015, artificially inflatingthepriceofbreadbyasmuchas$1.50per loaf.
Many people may be unaware that this happenedinpartbecauseofthehardworkoflocal anti-poverty activist Irene Breckon, from Elliot Lake.Heractivismledtoherfilingaclassaction suittocombatthepricefixingofthepriceofbread. ThisledtoWestonandLoblawlastweekagreeing to pay $500 million between them, with Weston paying $247.5 million, and Loblaw paying an additional $156.5 million as a follow-up to their previous $96 million for a $25 gift card program from a few years ago. The payout will be the largest antitrust settlement in Canadian history, subjecttocourtapproval
This settlement was the result of an investigation by the Competition Bureau investigationthatbeganin2016 BothWestonand Loblaw admitted to participating in the pricefixing scheme, which resulted in both receiving immunity from prosecution There will be a trial fortheremainingnamedpartiesinthescheme,the previously mentioned Canada Bread, Sobeys, Metro,WalmartCanadaandGiantTiger

To me, one of my best memories of those years was the paving of many Chapleau streets by about1950,andasIhadgraduatedfrommytricycleto a two wheeler, I still remember the official opening. For some reason, it was held at the intersection of GreyandBirchstreetswithGreyStreetNorthhaving beenpaved.Aftertheofficialopening,wehadbicycle races on the new pavement, organized, by who else, CouncillorJ.M.Shoup,alsotheprincipalofChapleau Public School, who looked after all races, or so it seemed.
As Chapleau expanded, Joseph Shilliday arrivedaschiefofpolice,andtheforcedoubledtothe chief and three officers who got a cruiser -- the first oneIthinkwasablack1952Chevroletwithalittlered lightontop.Priortothistime,Irecallthatifthepolice hadtogetsomewhereinahurry,theywouldtakeataxi or call the one Ontario Provincial Police officer who hadavehicle.
BubsZufeltalsofoundtimetobeinvolvedin other aspects of community Life. He was an avid curler and at one time was on a rink with Vince Crichton,BordenMcLeodandNewtPellowthatwon the NOCC championship. He sat on the board of St. John's Anglican Church for many years, served as president of the Chapleau Rotary Club and the local Progressive Conservative Association, as well as being a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.HehadworkedfortheCPRatonetime. He was also a member of Lorne Lodge AF and AM and a past district grand master of the IndependentOrderofOddfellows.
By 1950 he had purchased a new oven described by Wilf Simpson as "one of the most beautifulpiecesofautomaticbakingequipmentever", a new oven at Chapleau Bakery By this time the bakerywasputtingoutabout1,000loavesofbreada day. He worked full time at the bakery as well as servingasreeve.
WhenWilfaskedhimaboutthedifferencein equipmentovertheyears,BubsZufeltreplied,"Well, wehaveonlygoneforwardwiththetownasawhole anditisbythesupportofthepeople..thatthesethings arepossible.Wecouldnotforeseeit(yearsago)when thingswereprettygrimattimes.WilfaddedthatBub Zufelt's"faithinthetownhasbeenexemplifedwhen hemodernizeshisbusinessandexpendshiscapitalto giveChapleauanevenbetterproduct".
