The Y. So Much MoreTM Throughout Ventura and its surrounding communities, countless people know about the Ventura Family YMCA. But, there’s so much more to our Y than one might think. From exercise to education, from aerobics to advocacy, from fitness to financial assistance, the Y doesn’t just strengthen our bodies, it strengthens our communities. The Y is so much more than a gym. It’s a cause, dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. For 133 years, we’ve been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive. Yet we’re called to do so much more. Every day, our local communities face new challenges which create a greater need for the work that we do. Fortunately, where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, and staff to make a difference. But, we need your philanthropic support to seize these opportunities. TOGETHER, WE CAN ACHIEVE SO MUCH MORE!

our mission The Channel Islands YMCA is a charitable organization providing programs based upon Christian principles to men, women and children of all ages, races, religious beliefs and economic status to develop and enrich the spirit, mind, and body.

our cause

how we do it

There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. In 10,000 neighborhoods across the nation, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change.

SMALL GROUP

TRAINING PASS

Small Group training pass is a group of 12 participants or less. This creates an environment that is big enough to be fun, yet small enough to still be quality. It’s an affordable and fun way for members to take advantage of a personal trainer’s expertise at a lower financial investmentall while keeping the competitiveness of a group dynamic. Are you ready to work out harder than they ever have before? These trainings are geared to push participants to their max. Trainers are coaching to ensure that participants are safe. Trainers will not be working out with the participants (in contrast to group exercise) allowing them the ability to supervise each members movements and make corrections along the way. Cardio- High intensity cardio is used to boost your metabolism, improve recovery time, and can help manage stress. Strength- Gaining muscle can help you burn more fat, lean out/tone muscles, and decrease your likelihood of injuries. Flexibility- Helps you to use less energy when doing different movements. I allows your muscles to recover quickly after exercise, reduces the physical stress on your body, and can improve circulation in your body.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

FOR

31

WE GIVE BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY AND SUPPORT OUR NEIGHBORS Worldwide, the Y has been listening and responding to our communities’ most critical social needs for more than 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic diseases and building healthier communities through collaborations with policy makers, the Y fosters the care and respect that all people need and deserve. Through the Y, 500,000 volunteers and thousands of donors, leaders and partners across the country are empowering millions of people in the U.S. and around the world to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.

HOW THE Y

IS HERE

FOR A BETTER US™ SENIOR SWIM In a collaboration with the City of Ventura, the YMCA provides seniors an opportunity to use the pool free of charge on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am-9am. Please see the pool schedule for more details. For more information about this program, contact: Jessica.Shauer@ciymca.org. OPERATION VENTURA The YMCA is committed to being socially responsible. Through Operation Ventura, an outreach initiative, and the generous support of our donors, the Y has been able to provide free programming and membership to youth and families in foster or homeless situations. Participation in swim programs, youth sports and leagues, allows these underprivileged children in our community an opportunity to participate. For details and more information, please contact: Amber.Stevens@ciymca.org. TOGETHERHOOD ® When you volunteer at the Y, you take an active role in bringing about meaningful, enduring change right in your own neighborhood. There is no other volunteer organization quite like the Y. That’s because in 10,000 communities across the nation, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change. View volunteer opportunities on our website

LIVESTRONG AT THE Y The Y and the LIVESTRONG® Foundation joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity and wellbeing program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving confidence and self-esteem. For more information or to register, please contact: Anthony.Mavros@ciymca.org. 3RD GRADE LEARN TO SWIM Research shows that children who do not learn to swim by the 3rd grade probably never will. Working with local elementary schools, the Ventura Family YMCA is providing free swimming lessons to 3rd graders. Through this grant-funded program, children can socialize with each other outside of school walls while learning a lifelong skill. To get your school involved with this program, contact: Jessica.Shauer@ciymca.org.

BE A PART OF SOMETHING Believe in making a difference Inspire meaningful change Give with your whole heart Annual Campaign Did you know the Y is a charity? When you give to the Y, you continue to strengthen our community and move us forward as the nation’s leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Your support strengthens the community by not only giving children the chance to shine today, but by helping them learn important values that will impact their lives and your community tomorrow.
