The Bean

The Bean is a student lounge directly inspired by Joan Miro’s painting “1933.” This work of art is an abstract piece consisting of organic shape and lines arrange irregularly. This was often how Miro worked in a lot of his paintings. He used a lot of colorful organic shapes and often left his pieces up for interpretaion by the viewer. The specifc style he had was categorized as combination of surrealism and abstract expressionism. The Bean is intended for students to be able to feel relaxed outside of their dorm rooms in a comfortable, friendly, colorful space welcoming all in the student body.

The ‘01

The ‘01 is all about the community and the history that was once there. Our concept is to generate electricity through sustainable strategies to impact the community like the old tramway used to do. Just like how the tramway helped you get from place to place, The ‘01 has an in-house bike shop to help our guests get around the city. This will allow for a more efficient and sustainable way of travel around Denver and the perfect way of travel for guests staying at our hotel that don’t want to have to spend the extra money on a car rental but still want to get out and see the local scene.

The Glass House

The Glass House was built by architect Philip Johnson in 1949 and was inspired by the Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe and both are considered genius works of architecture that really broke the boundary into the modern era. The house was built in New Canaan, Connecticut, and was the first structure he built on his 47-acre estate that accumulated up to 50 years’ worth of projects. The house has a 32’ by 56’ open floor plan enclosed in and then 18-feet-wide floor-to-ceiling glass walls between black steel piers and this simplicity of the house did not impress his inspiration, Mies when he visited the house. This is a recreating of this architecture masterpiece.

Shattered

Water breaks the light and spreads it on the ocean floor. My idea was to create pockets or moments of light and shine it into a space the same way water shines into the ocean.

Studying the way light works and the way it can be manipulated with a mirror. The design that was landed to created to create the light studies to the right was reflecting the direct sunlight off a broken mirror. This created layers that the water can create naturally in any given environment.

ENERGY FUEL POWER The 01’ Hotel strives to celebrate the buildings history as well as be net positive building and provide power and electricity back to the surrounding area like it once did when it was initially built for the tramway back in 1901. Our sustainability stratedgy is posted on the following page. We plan to also promote sustainable practices by having a bike rental shop on the first floor for the community and out guests to get around without having to use a car. Our brewery is our way is of bringing energy to our guests with locally sourced food and beer that is brewed right in front of you while you dine while bringing people together makes its own unique energy.

Denver Colorado gets an average 300 days of sunshine per year ranking 6th among the 50 U.S. States. Denver is also know for being a very sustainable city ranking among the top 10 in solar energy and in overall sustainability and we plan to contribute to that on a daily basis and be the face of sustainability for the city.

Our sustainability strategy is to place photovoltaic cells across our large roof, having a large windmill out front, and using a water tower that stores rainwater and dumps it through a turbine. The water tower is meant for those days that are less sunny and windy and still can produce enough electricity for the hotel.

The lobby is the main entrance to the entire building so it was important to make it a central gathering area that was very comfortable and welcoming. The original brick walls frames the space with uses of black heavy steel to pay homage to the tramway and railway company as a whole. The use of natural materials and biophilia was intended to keep the outdoorsy citizens of Denver Colorado still connected to nature while being indoors at the ‘01. The fireplace is placed at the center to not only heat the entrance from the cold outdoors during the winter but to connect to the wind, water, and sun in the sustainability concept.

BREWERY The brewery is the true energy producer of the ‘01 as it is our way of not only giving energy to our occupants through food and great drinks but as the main communal space within the hotel. On a busy weekend night the restaurant is full of life with a diverse community coming together. The space has large ceilings with large skylights and windows allowing the guests to embrace the history of the building with natural light. The use of ivy was a great opportunity to bring biophilia into the space and allow light to pour in through the leaves onto the tables.

One of my main focuses was on variety, I stareted of with creating 4 different wall studies which later were either incorperated or inspired my final design.

The Glass House was built by architect Philip Johnson in 1949 and was inspired by the Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe and both are considered genius works of architecture that really broke the boundary into the modern era. The house was built in New Canaan, Connecticut, and was the first structure he built on his 47-acre estate that accumulated up to 50 years’ worth of projects. The house has a 32’ by 56’ open floor plan enclosed in and then 18-feet-wide floor-to-ceiling glass walls between black steel piers and this simplicity of the house did not impress his inspiration, Mies when he visited the house.

The open nature of it has its pros though and the clear beauty of it is to view the surrounding trees and landscape but has one solid aspect of it that offsets all of this and that is the large brick cylinder. This feature has a bathroom on one side and a fireplace on the other and the floorto-ceiling height is 10.5’ and the brick cylinder structure protrudes from the top of the home. In 1997 the site was declared a Historic National Landmark and has people traveling from all over to see the breathtaking beauty of the architecture and the surrounding landscape of a pond and the woods. The property is completely secluded and is invisible from the road and the outside world. The way the structures are connected and sculpted directly into the landscape is why this is a famous project. This quote from Philip Johnson sums up his intent and embodies the beauty of the house and he said “...The only house in the world where you can see the sunset and the moonrise at the same time, standing in the same place.” For this Project I was tasked with recreating this architectural masterpiece from scratch. I used Rhino 3D to create the geometries of the floor plan and then used Lumion to render.
