THE PACE PROGRAM

HISTORY

In 1992, Chaminade became a trailblazer among St. Louis area private and public high schools by allowing students to enroll in courses that counted for both high school and college credit through Saint Louis University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. In 2013, Rev. Ralph Siefert, SM, Dr. Stephanie Kralemann, Mrs. Teresa Wheeler, Mr. Jim Chrismer, and Mr. Tim Sartori formed a committee to explore, research, and implement a more formalized Advanced College Credit Program for Chaminade students, premised on Blessed William Joseph Chaminade’s vision “New Times, New Methods”.

The implementation of the Pathway to Access College Early (PACE) Program began in 2016, aligned to the Five Characteristics of Marianist Education. In addition, Missouri Baptist University became a partner school in 2019. Today over 100 Advanced College Credits are offered through the PACE Program, allowing many students to earn 60+ college credits to transfer to their chosen university upon graduation. The PACE Program has uniquely differentiated Chaminade as a leader in Advanced College Credit Programs among high schools locally, nationally, and internationally.

MISSION

The PACE Program was developed in the tradition of the Catholic Marianist education. The mission is to offer Chaminade students:

• A premier option to earn college credit through enrollment in Advanced College Credit high school courses from nationally accredited university programs,

• An opportunity to experience an introduction to college-level expectations while in high school taught by authorized Chaminade Adjunct University Instructors for our partner universities, and

• An opportunity to engage in a robust and rigorous university course experience through challenging college-level curriculum while in high school.

BENEFITS FOR CHAMINADE STUDENTS

While there are many benefits for students to participate in the PACE Program, official data from Chaminade alumni surveys and testimonials from the Classes of 2017-2022, confirms the following:

• Allowing students access to enroll in college credit courses while in high school significantly reduces the tuition cost,

• Offering up to two years of college coursework on the Chaminade’s campus allows for the transfer of these credits to a student’s final college choice upon graduation,

• Earning college credit while in high school allows an early entry into an Undergraduate Degree Program and completion before the traditional four years,

• Earning college credit while in high school provides the opportunity for students to earn a Master’s Degree within the traditional four years,

• Earning college credit while in high school provides the opportunity for students to Double Major within the traditional four years, and

• Earning college credit while in high school provides the opportunity for students to pursue a Gap Year and graduate within the traditional four years.

PACE PROGRAM STRUCTURE

FRAMEWORK of PACE

The PACE Program at Chaminade College Preparatory School provides an opportunity for our students to earn simultaneously both high school and college credit by enrolling in Advanced College Credit courses.

• Students attend courses on the Chaminade campus.

• Chaminade faculty approved by the universities as “Adjunct Instructors” teach these courses.

• Students pay a significantly reduced rate for tuition directly to the university.

• A student must earn a grade of “C” or above in each course in order to be awarded college credit.

• The official transcript records for the coursework are separate: the college credit is recorded on a university transcript and the high school credit is on the high school transcript.

• To request a transcript from each university, in which a student enrolled in an Advanced College Credit course(s), contact the university Registrar’s Office directly to request a transcript.

CHAMINADE PARTNERSHIPS WITH UNIVERSITIES TO OFFER ADVANCED COLLEGE CREDIT

Three universities collaborate with Chaminade to offer advanced college credit courses: Missouri Baptist University, St. Louis University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

• Chaminade has adopted the prefix ACC – Advanced College Credit - to course titles in order to bring uniformity to all advanced college credit course offerings, regardless of which university the credit is taken.

• Because each university has a unique title and acronym for their Advanced College Credit programs the ACC prefix is an official part of the name of a Chaminade Advanced College Credit course and appears as such on Chaminade’ s official transcript of courses taken and grades posted.

• Courses listed as AP/ACC indicate that a course may be taken for both advanced placement credit and advanced college credit. The AP course registration is a separate process through the College Board. The Associate Principal of Curriculum and Assessment is the Chaminade AP Program Coordinator. The ACC credit is awarded through one of the three universities where the student completes registration

COORDINATOR

A Chaminade College Counselor coordinates and facilitates the Pathway to Access College Early Program. The coordinator’s responsibilities include:

Advising Students and Parents

• Serving as the point of contact for the Chaminade’s PACE Program to ensure active participation by the students with our university partners - MBU, SLU, and UMSL,

• Providing advising resources about the program, registration, and enrollment for the courses for each semester,

• Overseeing student enrollment and confirmation to each university that each student meets qualifications for participation in advanced college credit enrollment with the university partners, and

• Coordinating tuition scholarships for ACC courses.

Managing the Program:

• Managing compliance of the high school ACC Program with the three university partners’ expectations and requirements,

• Ensuring advanced college credit courses are comparable to those on-campus counterparts,

• Preparing and submitting an annual ledger of advanced college credit courses offered at Chaminade for verification by the partner universities before the registration period begins at the high school, and

• Collaborating with University Adjunct Instructors to comply with university partner requirements to submit the annual course syllabi, maintenance of course academic rigor and integrity equivalent to the course offered on the college campus, and timely posting of student grades at the universities.

CHAMINADE ADJUNCT UNIVERSITY INSTRUCTOR QUALIFICATIONS

Chaminade instructors of Advanced College Credit courses are considered Adjunct Instructors of the college or university offering the college course. As for any instructor of college-level courses, high school instructors of Advanced College Credit courses shall meet the requirements for faculty teaching in institutions of higher education as stipulated for accreditation by the Missouri Coordinating Board of Higher Education.

• Advanced College Credit Adjunct Instructors shall possess an academic degree relevant to what they are teaching and at least one level above the level at which they teach.

• Advanced College Credit Adjunct Instructors using credentials for qualification with a Master’s level degree in a discipline or subfield other than that in which he or she is teaching, must have completed a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline in which he or she is teaching.

ACADEMIC RECORDS POLICIES

Participating university partners view and treat Chaminade students as on-campus college students. Therefore, the three universities have a high expectation for student academic performance. Students are granted similar rights and privileges as on-campus students, including additional resources.

GRADES AND TRANSCRIPTS

Official ACC Grading Scale information is located on the PACE homepage Questions related to grading scales can be addressed by the student’s class instructor.

• All student grades are permanently recorded on the student’s university transcript at EACH university where he enrolled.

• EACH university transcript includes the course name, credits earned, grades posted, and a calculated grade point average.

• All grades earned are computed into the student’s undergraduate grade point average at EACH university.

• An official student university transcript is available from the Registrar’s Office at EACH of the universities where the student enrolled.

• The student must choose to register at only one university if the course is offered at multiple universities. Do not register at multiple universities since it is the same course. A student may only make payment for a single Advanced College Credit course through one university.

FEDERAL EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS TO PRIVACY ACT: FERPA

• The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, known as FERPA, is a federal law giving certain rights to parents and students regarding education records at schools of every level including the three Advanced College Credit universities receiving funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

• It should be noted that at the university level, because most students are of legal age (age 18 or older) the rights afforded by FERPA belong, in general, to the student rather than the parent.

RESOURCES

• Chaminade students registered for ACC courses are granted full access to university libraries during the time of their studies, Fall and/or Spring semesters.

• MBU does not offer ACC Scholarships.

• SLU offers ACC Scholarships for the entire academic year.

• UMSL offers ACC Scholarships for both the 1st and 2nd Semesters.

• All ACC Scholarships are managed by the PACE Coordinator.

TRANSFERABILITY OF ACC CREDIT

Sending Transcripts: Each year Chaminade graduates request the university where they registered for their ACC to send their ACC university transcripts to the university they plan to attend upon graduation. Contact the registrar at each university or visit their online webpage.

Acceptance of Transfer Credits: Based on official PACE survey results, the majority of Chaminade students successfully transfer 1-2 years of college credits to their final university choice. Be aware that the receiving colleges and universities have the final authority as to how to accept the ACC credit.

The transferability of ACC Credit varies at universities Chaminade students attend. Many times, advanced college credit earned by a student, transfers not only the credit, but also the grade earned may transfer. If the receiving college accepts transfer college credit courses, the college will have a policy to include or not include the course grades in the student’s college GPA.

DESCRIPTIONS OF COMMON TRANSFER OPTIONS

Equivalency Credit: Applying the courses toward the student’s planned program of study/major as “equivalent” to the courses offered on receiving college campus.

Elective Credit: Reducing the number of courses the student must complete on campus in order to graduate by transferring the ACC courses as “elective” credit because the receiving university does not have a course that matches the course the ACC student is transferring. In that case, the student can count the hours toward graduation but may still need to take a course that is similar to, but not the same as, the advanced college credit course.

Exempt Credit: Allowing the student to be exempt from taking certain courses required for freshmen and sophomores, including introductory courses in core subjects.

Prerequisite Credit: Allowing the ACC transfer credit to count for prerequisites for their major or minor fields of study.

THE MISSOURI CORE 42 TRANSFER CURRICULUM

The CORE 42 Transfer Curriculum is a block of at least 42 credit hours that will transfer as equivalent credit to all Missouri public colleges and universities, in addition to 5 independent private colleges: Avila University, Central Methodist University, Logan University, Missouri Baptist University and Rockhurst University.

Students who complete the CORE 42 curriculum will meet the general education requirements for most liberal arts and sciences degrees at all public higher education institutions in the state. General education requirements for some degrees – including education, engineering, and nursing – differ due to professional licensing and other requirements.

Courses designated with a Missouri Transfer (MOTR) course number, guarantees the one-to-one transfer of these courses among all Missouri public institutions of higher education and the 5 independent private universities noted. Chaminade is in partnership with one public university, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and specific ACC courses taken through UMSL count toward meeting the Core 42 transfer credits.

The following chart lists the courses Chaminade offers students from the UMSL and do meet the requirements for Core 42. These courses are listed in alphabetical order for your convenience.
