PRESIDENT’S LETTER

As we take time to reflect on the 2022-2023 school year, we can’t help but be grateful for the contributions of the class of 2023. Each graduating class leaves its mark on Chaminade and this class is no exception. Their leadership, hard work, creativity, and love for their school and one another has certainly made an impact on our school community and the students that will follow behind them. These men are well prepared to continue their Esto Vir journey in remarkable ways, and it’s been a pleasure to walk with them as they were formed in the virtues of Esto Vir.

It’s been 13 years since we opened the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts, our last major campus building project. The Skip has transformed our fine arts program and has allowed our students, faculty, and the larger St. Louis community to have access to a world class theater for events and productions.

In the years since then, needed updates to different areas of campus and to our infrastructure have been completed. This includes long overdue improvements to the classrooms in Chaminade Hall, the construction of our baseball stadium, and updates to our football field.

In 2016, Fr. Ralph and the leadership team began to assess the needs of the school and identified a pathway to campus improvements that would position Chaminade for success for the next generation of students. The process made clear that the first step in securing the future of Chaminade was the construction of a new resident hall.

Since its founding in 1910, Chaminade has sought to create a home for its students as a boarding school. In those days, the boarding students came from rural areas from Missouri and neighboring states. These were mostly students that needed a different type of education than could be provided to them in their communities.

Over the years, students have lived in Chaminade, Frische, Waldron, and Canning Halls. Our student population has certainly evolved as well, now having students from countries all over the world. And while things are different than they were in 1910, one thing remains the same: our mission to create a home for students who want access to an elite, Catholic and Marianist education. We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to provide this opportunity through our resident program. We, too, are fortunate to be a more rich and diverse community by the presence of these young men.

To ensure the stability, growth, and success of our resident program, we proudly broke ground on a new dormitory in May. Because of the visionary leadership of Fr. Ralph, and the commitment of many current and past parents, and day and resident alums, our resident students will have a new space to call home. Named Marianist Hall, the new resident hall will serve as a prominent reminder of our commitment to our Marianist identity and charism, and an expression of gratitude for the mission handed down to us by Fr. Chaminade and brought to life by the many people that have gone before us.

In addition to the construction of Marianist Hall, we are eager to make some much needed improvements to the Immaculate Conception Chapel. We’re grateful to the many donors that participated in the Fund-A-Need at the Esto Vir Auction, raising $750,000 toward the renovations. Both projects should be completed in the fall of 2024.

We are able to complete these projects because of the generosity of the Chaminade community. It’s worth noting that in addition to major funds raised for capital projects, we had a record breaking year with the Chaminade Fund. A highlight of the Chaminade Fund was the growth we experienced with our annual Give Chaminade Day. Proudly, we had increased participation from our parents and alumni. We were especially excited to see that our young alums were eager to support the effort. The Chaminade Fund supports every aspect of a Chaminade education and plays an important role in keeping Chaminade in reach for all families that want access to a better educational experience for their sons. Thank you again for your great support.

3 SUMMER 2023

YOU KNOW IT WHEN YOU SEE IT

You have most likely heard the term “Family Spirit” so much that you may have become numb to it. This magazine will use the phrase countless times on its pages. Even our last edition’s main feature used “Family Spirit” as its title. Across the Chaminade campus it’s plastered on banners, walls, and included in an incalculable number of lesson plans, emails, and letters.

“Family Spirit” can be hard to define, but it may be the one thing that makes Chaminade, Chaminade. It is at the core of everything we do. And while it may be hard to explain to others, you certainly know it when you see it.

Lan Nguyen ’23 first came to Chaminade from Vietnam as a 7th grader in 2017. He quickly became a leader of his class and a mentor for younger students, going so far as to become a House Captain for Mauclerc House, and was chosen by his classmates as the Esto Vir Award recipient. While leading his senior retreat, Lan discussed his relationship with his mother and how he wished she could see him graduate. Some of Lan’s fellow House Captains were on this retreat and asked their teachers what they needed to do to get Lan’s mother to St. Louis in time for graduation.

With help from Chaminade faculty and staff, the young men worked for over a month, helping Lan’s mother with an application for a visa, filling out the proper paperwork, and raising the funds necessary for her to make the trip.

Lan’s mother arrived in the United States the weekend before commencement. To help keep it a surprise from Lan, she stayed with Christopher Marsek ’98 and his family.

To set up the surprise, Chaminade faculty and the House Captains set up a photoshoot in front of Chaminade Hall following graduation practice on Tuesday, May 18, during which Lan’s mother snuck in behind Lan revealing her presence, much to Lan’s surprise and enthusiasm.

After giving both of them a moment, Lan’s classmates embraced Lan in a group hug on the steps of Chaminade Hall, creating a moment they, nor will Chaminade soon forget, and a lasting image of how the love between classmates can turn them into brothers.

Family Spirit. It’s hard to define sometimes, but you definitely know it when you see it.

PRINCIPAL’S LETTER

THE BEDROCK

OF CHAMINADE:

FAMILY SPIRIT

Chaminade is a school steeped in tradition. The cornerstone of Chaminade Hall reads: Erected AD 1909. This stately building has been a place of learning and home to thousands of students for more than 110 years. This “sentinel on the hill” towers over the community and stands as a beacon of educational excellence. The campus contains classrooms, gyms, athletic fields, a dorm, and a state-of-the-art building for the arts. And while these brick-and-mortar buildings comprise the places where education takes place, they are not Chaminade.

Chaminade is the people who come to this place every day. It is the sixth-grade student who will spend the next seven years of his life proceeding down the path of his Esto Vir journey. It is the senior who wants to take pictures of himself and his friends at significant places around campus while in his red graduation cap and gown. It is the parents who make the sacrifice and place their trust in Chaminade to educate their sons. It is the teacher who has a long tenure at the school where he or she has dedicated their lives to making a difference in the lives of the students they teach. It is the alumni who think back fondly on their time at Chaminade and reflect on the lifelong friendships they made while sitting in the cafeteria, playing on teams, and absorbing the learning that was offered to them.

While Chaminade can boast about a beautiful campus with a plan to better meet student needs, this is not the bedrock of Chaminade. The bedrock is the people. The people who populate Chaminade every day are what makes Chaminade what it is. We do not travel on our Esto Vir journey alone. Everyone is here, not only to live his own Esto Vir journey, but to help others on their journey as well. One does not travel through Chaminade in a vacuum. One cannot help but interact with others. This interaction, no matter how great or small, is the building block of forming relationships. These relationships are what is known as Family Spirit.

Family Spirit has been advanced by the House System. In the early years of the House System, we quickly realized it would be a catalyst for driving Family Spirit. The House System has many benefits: providing leadership

opportunities for seniors, creating an environment of a vertically aligned community, and providing an increase in adult pastoral care. The cross-class relationships are an invaluable asset in building school climate. Because the House System has become such an integral part of the community, we sometimes take it for granted and forget how lucky we are to have such a complex system in place. Central to the success of our mission is the value the House System provides to Family Spirit. I truly believe to carry out our mission we cannot overlook the significance of Family Spirit.

As I look back on the early days of the House System, one of the first things I noticed was the change in the relationships among the students. Since Mentor Groups had students from all classes within them, students started to develop relationships with kids other than students they would not normally have in class. In the high school, Mentor Groups were made up of 9th- 12th graders, and in the middle school Mentor Groups were made up of 6th-8th graders with 12th grade student leaders. I would see upperclassmen taking younger students to games as well as more interaction at lunch and of course during House Meetings and House Events. It was great to see the older students taking the younger students under their wings and showing them what Chaminade was all about. We would see this at plays, concerts and on the sports fields, cross-class relationships became interwoven into the fabric of Chaminade.

To educate in Family Spirit we are called to build a nurturing educational culture. We are all called to build and maintain a climate that is loving to all members of our community. Within the Characteristics of Marianist Education it clearly states, “By providing climate of acceptance and love, the school acts as an extended family, nurturing growth, development and personal responsibility.” We must all take part in creating this culture; students, teachers, staff, parents, and administrators. We must ask ourselves: what is my contribution in creating a positive climate to ensure that the school mission is fulfilled? Am I doing my part?

5 SUMMER 2023

We often talk about the Family Spirit of Chaminade, but you will be hard-pressed to find a class that embodies the term more than the Class of 2023. This group of young men had anything but a consistent high school career: The passing of Fr. Ralph, the retirement of many stalwarts of the Chaminade campus, and a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic are just a few of the trials and tribulations that struck this class. They did not have what many would consider a normal high school experience until their senior year.

While the world has become more fractured during this time, this class took the opposite approach; learning to lean on one another and pick each other up after each challenge they faced. They grew closer as a unit, treating each other as brothers, and found the joy that servant-leadership provides as they became the 20 th senior class to lead the House System.

The words of commencement speaker, Ed Dowd ’67 are fitting for this class: “Don’t stop believing in others. Indifference is not an option.”

The Class of 2023 believed in each other. And in the process, they became a family.

Esto Vir, Gentlemen.

BASKETBALL

The 2022-2023 Chaminade Basketball season was a fun, exciting season! Finishing with a 21-9 record, the Chaminade Basketball Team played a challenging schedule, which included victories over St. Rita (Chicago), Real Salt Lake (Utah), and Curie (Chicago). Furthermore, Chaminade was Co-MCC Champions this season, sharing the title with De Smet and CBC. Other highlights of the season included beating SLUH and CBC to win the district championship. This season’s journey was led by our seniors BJ Ward, Nilavan Daniels, Sam Piontek, and Travis Pryor. Together, these accomplished seniors led a youthful Chaminade Basketball Team to an overall successful season!

WATER POLO

The Chaminade Water Polo Team started training early this year with morning swims in January. First year coaches, and alums, Zach Pogue ’15 and Johnathan Struckhoff ’18 were powerful additions to an already strong coaching staff of Andrew Schmitt ’95, Abbey Ver Meer, and Brandon Murdock. The program is robust in size with a total of 29 players. Seniors Holden Schroyer, Jack Unger, Gavin Rizzo, and Tim Saunders were central to leading such a large group, half of which were freshmen and sophomores. The Water Polo team will be senior heavy next year with 10 returning juniors. One highlight from the season was a high-scoring win over Lafayette, 18-17. The win was punctuated by 2nd Team AllConference player Brady Noonan ’24 scoring 11 goals. With such a large group of returning players, the team is already excited for next year.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

2023 brought challenges to the Ultimate Frisbee Team. And, as always, the team responded with tenacity and class. Undermanned all year, the small squad played every game without any subs, known in the sport as ’savage’. Nevertheless, they finished the year 7-1. Captains David Portman ’23 and Conor Hammond ’23 led the way, both earning All-Star honors, with Conor also winning Rookie of the Year as a senior in his first year with the team. Next year, the team will continue to rebuild, as it looks to return to the glory years of CCP Ultimate legends, Connor Noyes ’10, and Christian Piccioni ’19.

BASEBALL

Chaminade Baseball had a rough 2023, finishing the regular season 7-19. The season had challenges well before games started with numerous injuries. Aiden Houseworth ’23, who was the starting shortstop as a freshman, was lost for the season when he had knee surgery in the fall. Ace of the staff Quinn Council ’23 and three-year starter Chris Pelligreen ’23 had elbow surgeries that also ended their careers short. With this being said, it provided opportunities for several freshmen to play including utility player Jonah Copley ’26, pitcher Cooper Brown ’26, and shortstop Jackson Miller ’26. We had solid performances from three-year starting catcher senior Charlie Burt ’23, two-year starting designated hitter Nick Livingston ’24, three-year starter corner infielder Will Bacich ’23, and first baseman, Cal Ramthun ’24 who had injuries himself to deal with. Junior Logan Zwirn was solid both in the outfield and as a pitcher along with senior Joey Chiburis and junior Carter Mercer. Carson Cosby ’25 was superb patrolling centerfield all year and Will Mozeliak ’23 was a solid defender. The graduating class (Joey Chiburis, Joe Judd, Will Bacich, Charlie Burt, and Will Mozeliak) will surely be missed, but we have a good group of returning underclassmen who will contribute in the 2024 season.

9 SUMMER 2023

ATHLETICS

GOLF

The Chaminade Golf Team began its season as it has done for the past six years in Gulf Shores, Alabama. They faced two teams, including the reigning state champion, and came away with two solid victories. The first tournament of the season came the next week, and the team fired a 296, outpacing the field by 14 strokes. The rest of the season was a rollercoaster of highs and lows, as the team worked toward post-season. The squad took the championship of the MCC Conference Tournament and placed second at districts.

The state tournament took place at Silo Ridge Golf Course in Bolivar. Despite a four-hour rain delay with three holes left to play, the first day found the CCP golfers with a one stroke lead. Paced by individual champion Bubba Chapman ’24 (72, 70) and two-time all-state recipient John Guerra ’23 (76, 71), Chaminade took the state championship by one stroke. Junior Charlie Kramer (73,78) and senior Clayton Becher (75,79) contributed to the final tally, which is the lowest MSHSAA team score ever at Silo Ridge.

TENNIS

The Varsity Tennis Team had a solid season this spring. The overall dual match record was 12-11. The varsity tennis team finished with a 2-1 record in the Edwardsville Spring Invitational Tournament in the Champions II Flight and finished with a 2-2 record in the Belleville East Team Tournament to finish in 13th place. We also finished 2nd place in the flighted MCC Tournament. Individual MCC champions include Tate Wojciechowski ’24/Brandon Wagrodzki ’23 in the 1st doubles flight, Will Fraser ’23/Graham Toombs ’23 in the 2nd doubles flight, and Drew Hennessey ’24 in the 4th singles flight.

VOLLEYBALL

The Chaminade Volleyball Team finished their 2023 season 17-14-3. The team won a Class 4 district title and competed in a close and hard-fought four-set state quarterfinal match against SLUH. Four starters, Jack Temporiti ’24, Bode Steinbecker ’24, Danny Allen ’23, and Leo Wolkey ’23 were selected for the All-District Team; and seven players qualified for the All-Academic State Team. Temporiti and Steinbecker were chosen second team All-State. Temporiti and Allen earned second team All-MCC with Wolkey, Steinbecker, and Nilavan Daniels ’23 earning an honorable mention for All-MCC Conference Team. With many underclassmen eager to fill roles and a strong rising senior class, the team is eager to continue to build on this season’s successes as a fully MSHSAA sanctioned sport in the 2024 season. Thank you, seniors, for developing the team culture and inspiring a new generation for Chaminade Volleyball.

LACROSSE

Chaminade Lacrosse had another successful season throughout all levels. Our middle school boasted a record number of players across four teams with many athletes picking up the sport for the first time. We competed in the Jr. MSLA Tournament at the end of the season where our Esto Vir team took home a second-place finish after an exciting championship match. Our high school teams experienced similar success on the field as our JV and C teams both won their respective championship tournaments, including an undefeated season for our freshmen squad. Varsity made a run to the semi-finals for the third consecutive year on the backs of our twenty-two senior athletes. Numerous athletes earned end of season honors, including eight All-Conference and three All-State players. Senior Emmett Rossiter was also honored as the MCC Offensive Player of the Year to go along with his All-American award as one of the top players in the nation.

10 ESTO VIR

ATHLETICS

HOCKEY

The Chaminade Hockey Team started off this season struggling for the first half of the season only winning one game before Chaminade decided to go another way with the coaching staff. After the change was made, the Red Devils went on to win seven of their last 11 games, punching their ticket into the Mid States Playoffs as a #6 seed. From there, the team went on to beat Parkway South and #1 overall seed CBC to make it to the semi-finals. In a hard-fought battle, the Red Devils season came to a close after losing a nail-biter to the DeSmet Spartans, who went on to win the Mid States Championship against SLUH.

TRACK & FIELD

The 2023 Chaminade Red Devil Track Team is one of the most balanced squads in recent history, with talent up and down the roster in nearly every event.

A high-flying jumps squad was led by 2022 sectional qualifier and junior Jason Rea, who hopes to match last year’s success in the high and long jumps. The future looks bright as well, with sophomore triple jumper Nate Rosenblum, and freshmen high jumpers, Chris Funches and Kai Robinson, earning points in nearly every meet this season.

The throwers have garnered top spots in some of the most competitive meets in the area led by discus thrower Kyle Russell, shot puter Andrew Howell, and javelin thrower Brady Gordon.

The speed on the track is impressive as well with seniors Tim Bailey and Chris Jenkins, along with freshman Tricy Collins, earning medals all season long.

The highlight of the season, though, came at the Metro Catholic Conference meet where the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Alex Cattoor, Harry Lierman, Joe DiGuiseppe and Mitch Hardeman placed first and shattered the old school record set back in 1994 with a time of 8:08.18.

The team was well-represented at the State Championship Meet in May by the aforementioned 4x800 relay team, Joe Mura ’23 for the pole vault, and Andrew Howell ’25 for the shot put.

eSPORTS

This year we participated in a different league than last year. The league had a middle school division and a high school division. Our Rocket League team consisting of Ethan Scott, Greg Fedyk, and the third man being either Curran Buescher in the fall or Reilly Spencer in the spring did well this year and learned the ins and outs of playing in a different league. We had a number of Minecraft players, a new game offered this year: Sam Feldman, Brady Moersch, Brendan Mooney, Torsten Roither, Michael Connors, Nick Benninger, Holden Robb, and Rhys Robb. They all did really well learning the rules and competing week to week. Near the end of the spring season the eSports room was opened up on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to students that wished to watch others compete, or those that wished to come down and play a game for a bit. A lot of those days we filled the room up helping the club aspect of the eSports room to grow alongside the competitive side of things.

RACQUETBALL

The Chaminade Racquetball Team is in rebuilding mode and made significant improvements this year. We had a fantastic group of 11 first-time players and four returning players playing mainly at the Junior Varsity 2 level. The JV-2 Team A finished in second place at the Missouri High School Racquetball Association State Tournament, a notable accomplishment given all were first-time players. Contributing to the team’s second-place finish were juniors Cal Ramthun, state champion at seed #1, and Liam Hanrahan, 3rd place at seed #5.

ALUMNI A LETTER TO

2022-2023 was another wonderful year for Chaminade. As the school year has come to an end, I hope that all of you had the chance to come to campus for some of the events that have taken place this year.

Chaminade alumni have been involved in many events, including the Christmas Tree Lot, the Esto Vir Auction, the Chaminade Sports Hall of Fame, as well as band, drama and sporting events. I would like to thank all the volunteers that made these events possible. Our Alumni Association is blessed to have such dedicated individuals.

At the Blessed Chaminade Day Liturgy, our two Alumni Association Awards were presented - the Alumnus of the Year to Matt Geekie ’80, and the Alumni Humanitarian Award to Michael Tecklenburg ’82.

We recently welcomed the Class of 2023 into the Alumni Association. The Class of 2023 has exemplified our Esto Vir motto during their years at Chaminade and these young men will be pursuing their academic interests this fall at some of our nation’s finest schools. Many of them have received scholarships and awards for their achievements while at Chaminade. Welcome to the Alumni Association, gentlemen! We look forward to your involvement for many years to come.

Thank you very much for the opportunity to serve as your Alumni Board President. It is an honor and privilege to represent you and you should be proud of your dedicated Alumni Board. Should you have any questions about events, want to help run an event, or simply want to attend one, please feel free to contact me or our Director of Alumni Relations, David Nolda, 314-692-6673, or dnolda@chaminade-stl.org.

ADVANCEMENT UPDATE

Record-Setting Give Chaminade Day

On April 19 we celebrated our annual Give Chaminade Day with a goal to raise $125,000. We are overwhelmed and humbled by the generosity of the Chaminade family. With your support, we far exceeded our fundraising goal.

Through the collaboration of several alumni, current parents, past parents, and faculty/staff members, a variety of unique challenges were offered this year: an Alumni Participant Challenge, a Current Parent Participant Challenge, a Faculty/Staff Participant Challenge, and a Give Chaminade Day Dollars Raised Challenge. A special thank you to this group of donors for setting up these challenges which elevated our Giving Day to new heights and increased our participation in record-setting ways!

Throughout Give Chaminade Day, we heard stories from some of our faculty members (Michael Massa ’83, Dave McCoy ’86, and Mark Bacyznski ’99) and alumni (Joseph Corrigan ’22, David Amelotti ’10, Monroe Douglass, Jr. ’04, and Peter Sheahan ’82). These Chaminade Gentlemen shared how a Chaminade education is more than academics. It is an opportunity to grow in faith, create a global outlook, and develop the strength to do what is right. Your participation in efforts like Give Chaminade Day is what makes stories like theirs possible.

To highlight the cost of educating one Chaminade student for one day, we offered an Esto Vir coaster incentive for those making a gift of $135 or more. We truly saw the impact that one day can have! In just 24 hours, the Chaminade family donated over $180,000 in support of our students and ensured that the Esto Vir journey for our students can continue and will prepare the next generation of Chaminade Gentlemen to have a positive influence on their communities.

Thank you very much for all that you do for the young men of Chaminade.

MARIANIST HALL GROUNDBREAKING:

RENEWING TRADITION

On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, after nearly a decade of planning and fundraising, we finally broke ground on a new resident hall.

The event was celebrated alongside those whose generosity helped make this project a reality, including Friends of Fr. Ralph, past parents, day and resident student alumni, as well as current resident students who will call the new building home beginning in the fall of 2024.

Our resident students have called many buildings on campus home: Chaminade Hall, Frische Hall, Waldron Hall, and Canning Hall. By naming the new building Marianist Hall, it is our hope to recognize the names of our past while reminding future generations of what Chaminade stands for. Upon revealing the name of the new hall, Dr. Guidry remarked, “We recognize the men who have gone before us, who are responsible for building this great institution, and to

cement our fidelity to our mission and our purpose.”

Chaminade Board Chair, Joe Eckelkamp echoed those sentiments stating “Let today be not just the celebration of a new building, but also a time to offer a prayer of hope to the students who will live inside its walls. Let it be a celebration of the legacy of those who came before us, and a chance to renew our commitment to the Resident Program.”

Change and moving forward can be hard. But the building of Marianist Hall shows Chaminade can change and respect its history. We can move forward with the knowledge given to us by those that came before. And most importantly, we can maintain our traditions by renewing them for generations to come.

23 SUMMER 2023

CHAMINADE ADMISSIONS

There is something special at Chaminade. And, Julie, Zach and I get the honor of being able to showcase this in the Admissions Office with our prospective families.

We hosted nearly 500 shadow visitors at Chaminade this year and had record high applications. It was awesome to see what our prospective students experienced on their shadow visit. They jumped right into Mentor Group with their Ambassador and enjoyed a pickup game of shinny hockey, ping pong, mini-golf or even a “Mindful Monday” conversation starter.

The shadow student then attended several classes and saw our students engaged in learning in a myriad of ways. They witnessed students dissecting a cow eye in Mr. Pendleton’s 7th grade science class. They appreciated a group of freshmen designing and constructing a 7-foot tall cardboard Lego man in Mrs. Laury’s freshman Art class. They helped build a 3D model of a castle in Mrs. Young’s STEM class. Seeing our teachers’ engaging lessons and the Family Spirit in action (one of the Characteristics of Marianist Education of which we’re so proud) made our prospective student’s decision an easy one to apply to Chaminade.

Some of our own highlights of the year are:

Heather: Seeing our Student Ambassadors in leadership roles with our shadow program, at Open House and at High Schol Nights.

Julie: Senior Johnny Schlattman reflecting on his Chaminade years at New Family Night.

Heather: Our first year together with our new Admissions team.

Julie: Hearing the cheers from the sidelines of the Red Devil fans game after game, all across campus.

Zach: Coaching Soccer and Water Polo, bringing back memories of playing both at Chaminade.

Heather: Seeing the Chaminade Band perform with the students from Cor Jesu; it sounded like we were at Powell listening to the symphony.

Julie: Listening to the celebratory sounds of the seniors leaving campus at the end of the year as car after car honked as they left campus for the last time.

Zach: Surviving the 28hour bus ride to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on the 8th grade Tetons trip and really enjoying working with the students on their incredible experiences!

Zach: Being asked to tie a middle school student’s tie in the Main Office before Career Day.

All three: The pride from our department knowing we got to showcase all of this and delight in knowing that our new students will make their own individual contributions to the school on their own Esto Vir journey!
