SUCCESS AT CHAMINADE The very fact that a young man is accepted to Chaminade means that he has already demonstrated the appropriate academic background and ability to be successful in a college preparatory program. The acceptance letter is, indeed, a vote of confidence in his ability to succeed and achieve at Chaminade. The key ingredient that the young man himself must provide is the willingness to do the work and cooperate with the expectations that he will experience. Those who immerse themselves into the Chaminade experience – in the classroom, activities, and sports – are those who are happy and successful. Young men who don’t want to come to Chaminade, those who wait a year before joining any activity, and those who don’t do the work have difficulty. The secret is to get involved! Do things, join activities or sports, and do the schoolwork.

Chaminade students come from as many as 200 different schools – some Catholic, some public, and some private. Some students were at the top of their classes, while others were good but not stellar students.

Experience has shown that successful young men at Chaminade have come from all types of schools and have achieved various grades. The factor common to all students who are successful at Chaminade is their personal commitment to their work and activities.

FINANCES For you as parents considering enrolling your son at Chaminade, a very important concern is the cost of tuition. The actual cost of your son’s education is $16,825. The Chaminade Development Fund provides endowment support to lower the cost to you by $2,340. The endowment is provided by the Torch Fund, Chaminade’s program of annual giving.

For the coming school year – your son’s freshman year – the cost to your family for your son’s Chaminade education will be a total of $14,485. There are no raffles, sales drives, collections, or other such activities.

Tuition is paid in three installments through FACTS Management Company: Sunday, August 1, 2021: $5,794 Monday, November 1, 2021: $5,069.75 Tuesday, February 1, 2021: $3,621.25 Once your son has registered, there are no fees or special charges in addition to the tuition that you will pay for your son to attend Chaminde. Many years ago, the Chaminade Board of Advisors recommended that all other charges, such as accident insurance, athletic fees, computer use costs, activity charges, and so on, be grouped together and included in the overall tuition cost. You can budget on the cost of $14,485 for your son’s Chaminade education this coming year.

TORCH FUND The Torch Fund, which began in 1987, is Chaminade’s program of unrestricted annual giving. Gifts to the Torch Fund are used to build the endowment investments of Chaminade. The interest and dividends from this endowment are used to lower the cost of tuition for parents.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM Chaminade is a college preparatory, liberal-arts high school.

The Chaminade curriculum provides a solid program of rigorous academic study in each of the major subject areas for all four years of high school. Your son will be taking four years of English, history, foreign language, mathematics, religion, and science. In addition, he will take music for one year, art for one year, a year of either advanced art or advanced music as a senior, health for one year, and physical education for four years. In addition, all students take two years of academic enrichment and two years of Bloomberg financial training. The Chaminade program is far more demanding than state requirements, and it satisfies the expectations of any college program.

When your son registers, he can choose which language he will study for four years: Chinese, French, Latin, or Spanish. Experience has shown that each of the languages is approximately the same level of difficulty. While Spanish is the most commonly selected language, the other three are recommended for those who think they may wish to pursue further study of that language. None of the languages are inherently easier or harder than the others.

The school day begins at 8:05 A.M. and dismissal is at 3 P.M. During school time, students are to be properly dressed in jacket and tie and neatly groomed. Chaminade follows a block schedule.

Three blocks are devoted to academic study, one block is for lunch and study hall, and one block is dedicated to academic enrichment, fine arts, physical education, and additional English and math support. Students who are interested in music may elect to participate in band, string orchestra, or Glee Club. These activities meet during school time, replacing a student’s study hall. Following dismissal, more than 90 percent of students participate in a wide range of sports and activities.

Chaminade’s academic program seeks to develop in each young man a good understanding and a broad exposure in each of the major fields of study through a four-year program.

ACADEMIC PLACEMENT FOR ADVANCED STUDENTS In all subjects except foreign language, students take the same freshman courses: Biology, English I, Geometry, Global Studies I, and History of Salvation I. During sophomore, junior, and senior year, students may place into the variety of advanced courses offered in English, social studies, mathematics, and science. Each course advancement is considered independently, based on a series of factors including overall academic performance, achievement in the preceding course, academic and extra-curricular responsibilities, and student initiative. Advancement in these courses is based on student achievement in Chaminade courses only. Advanced courses are rigorous, expansive studies of the subject. Many students in these courses will choose to sit for the College Board’s Advanced Placement exams, though that is not a school requirement. Students may advance in one area or many throughout their time at Chaminade.

Those students who have previously taken a foreign language may advance before the start of their freshman year. Students who wish to be considered for advanced placement, (e.g. into French II instead of French I) are invited to sit for a placement examination in the course. This examination is taken in the spring, covering all topics of the course. Students who advance will take a 5th-level course in their senior year.

Experience has shown that many accelerated programs in 8th grade are quite qualatative, while others are strong but do not cover the full year of material contained in the corresponding Chaminade course. Chaminade is concerned about placing each student properly; in particular, we are hesitant to place a student into a course for which he is not fully prepared. For this reason, we rely on demonstrated knowledge of course material as shown in the placement exam.

ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE ADVANTAGE PROGRAM Chaminade High School participates in the St. John’s College Advantage Program. This program allows juniors and seniors to earn up to 12 credits per year for courses taught by our distinguished faculty. Upon completion, students will receive an official transcript from St. John’s University that can be submitted for consideration at the university of their choice.

RELIGIOUS EXPRESSION Ninety years ago, the Catholics of Long Island responded generously to the invitation of the founder of Chaminade, Bro. Alexander Ott, S.M., to establish and build Chaminade High School. Over the years, that commitment has continued, as Chaminade has grown into the institution we know today. Each year, many more young men apply to Chaminade than can be accepted. As an institution of the Catholic Church, Chaminade properly gives Catholic young men first priority of registration at Chaminade.

Chaminade students study religion for each of their four years of high school. The first two years are devoted to the study of Holy Scripture, Church history, and the sacraments.

The third year is devoted to Christian Humanism, while the Catholic Apologetics and social justice are topics of the fourth year of study.

Chaminade is owned and operated by the Society of Mary, the Marianists. Marianist brothers, priests, and lay faculty are actively committed not only to helping each young man understand his faith intellectually, but also helping him live his faith. Throughout the school day and year, there are many opportunities for religious expression, ranging from the prayers at the beginning of the school day and before classes to regular student-body Masses. Seasonal prayer services and special activities such as food drives and evenings of recollection give added dimension to religious expression at Chaminade.

Many students choose to participate in Sodality, an after-school activity conducted by Marianists, lay faculty, alumni, and alumni parents, that discusses religious and other topics. There is a prayer service in the chapel each day before lunch periods.

All freshmen, sophomores, and seniors attend a day retreat as part of their spiritual and religious program at the on-campus Saragossa Retreat Center. Meribah, the Chaminade retreat house in Muttontown, is the location for a variety of programs that promote religious growth and expression. Programs at Meribah take place during the school day and on weekends. Founder’s Hollow, a 190acre plot of scenic property in upstate Ulster County, was acquired in 2000 to augment apostolic and retreat work.

PARENTS CLUB All parents of students at Chaminade are automatically members of the Chaminade Parents Club. Parents of freshmen are especially welcome and are encouraged to take an active part in the life of the school through the Parents Club.

The Parents Club conducts a variety of activities throughout the year. Some are social in nature, such as cocktail parties and the Founders Dinner. Others are service-oriented, such as assistance given to Open House programs, mailings, library assistance, dance chaperones, Meribah volunteers, school store volunteers, concession volunteers, speech and debate judges, and so on. The Presidents of the Parents Club and the Chairpeople of the Parents Club Board are members of the Chaminade Board of Advisors.

TEXTBOOKS New York State law makes provisions for providing some textbooks through the local school district for all courses except religion.

Some districts also provide workbooks for student use.

Chaminade uses a combination of physical textbooks and digital textbooks. Some courses, such as English I, use their own, Chaminade-created digital books. Others use traditional textbooks with a digital companion.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY All Chaminade students have school-issued iPads. The purpose of Chaminade High School’s use of technology in education is to cultivate a multimodal, collaborative, and contemporary learning environment. Students engage with a traditional liberal-arts curriculum while developing 21st-century skills.

Chaminade has determined that the iPad will be the tool use to provide these opportunities for our students.

Each iPad comes with Canvas – Chaminade’s learning management system (LMS). An LMS is a one-stop shop for all the communications and technologies in the school. It bundles assignments, announcements, messaging, and more.

All students also have school-issued Gmail accounts, which include Google apps for education and unlimited Google Drive storage for files. iPads are the property of Chaminade High School. Students are issued an iPad at the start of each school year and return them at the end of the year. Their materials are saved using cloud-based storage.

There are no additional costs to students for regular use of the iPad. All apps, software, and hardware are covered in the cost of tuition. iPads will be distributed during the 3-C Program.

TRANSPORTATION Chaminade students come from all parts of Long Island. State law mandates that school districts in Nassau and Suffolk Counties provide transportation to Chaminade if the student lives between three and 15 miles from the school. Many school districts also provide late bus service.

Those students who live between three and 15 miles from the school receive appropriate transportation services, usually by bus, to and from Chaminade. Those students who live beyond the 15-mile limit use other means, such as carpooling or mass transit. Many students commute by train to Chaminade from homes in Suffolk County and are offered a discounted monthly pass through the Long Island Rail Road. Students who reside in New York City receive discounted passes for public trains and buses. Questions pertaining to transportation can be complex and are best handled on an individual basis. All students are encouraged to learn to use public transportation to travel to and from Chaminade. This gives the young man greater freedom to participate in after-school activities and it also gives him the assurance of a way to or from school in the event that he misses his bus. Also, the ability of a young man to use public transportation relieves his parents of the burden of providing chauffeuring services.

ACTIVITIES AND ATHLETICS Chaminade prides itself on the extensive program of activities and athletics that are available to its students. Last year, 44-percent of students participated on at least one interscholastic team, and more than 92-percent of students were involved in at least one activity or sport. Students are encouraged to join the activities in which they are interested or to try activities to discover their interests.

Details of try-outs for teams or first meetings for clubs are announced during the 3-C Program in August and during the first days of classes.

Most sports have freshman or junior-varsity teams on which freshmen participate. A full list of activities and athletic teams may be found in the school profile, included in this packet.
