WELCOME A big thank you for the positive response we received to the previous issue.

To be fair, it was a hell of a push to get that (and this) out within our proposed start of year timings what with all that has gone on both internally and domestically.

By hook or by crook, we did just that and again I thank you for your comments. We are very proud of Diggers LIVE. Toby and I have revelled in the challenge of speaking to the construction equipment industry, myself in particular without my trusted salesman’s hat on.

Being able to gain the trust of an industry that we want to showcase passionately, is a simple but true reflection of the way we work.

As I write this, it is day #1 of the UK’s lockdown and will look forward to the usual Zoom problems, but most importantly and thankfully construction can continue, meaning we have a duty to showcase the industry even more.

This edition contains a bumper tribute to 75 years of JCB, from its humble beginnings in a garage near Uttoxeter to the multi-million pound business it is today. There is some exciting kit around, with electric and other zero-emissions vehicles. And also looking forward, we feature the Construction Plant-hire Association’s (CPA) Stars of the Future. Enjoy.

JCB marked its impending 75th anniversary on a field eight miles from the company’s global headquarters in Rocester with a numeric carving visible from outer space.

The eight-acre motif was ploughed into the Staffordshire field by one of the company’s most famous products – the Fastrac tractor.

A team of JCB employees uploaded a digital version of the artwork to the Fastrac’s precision guidance programme, which then delivered the calculations to the machine’s automatic steering system.

The team consisted of Fastrac Sales Engineer Peter Williams; Senior Fastrac Sales Engineer James Coxon; JCB Agriculture Product and Marketing Manager David Timmis and Fastrac Product Specialist Tom Mowforth.

David Timmis said, “Seventy-five years is a big milestone to reach and we wanted to mark it with a product that has played a significant role in JCB’s success. Using the JCB Fastrac to create a giant JCB logo in a field that could be seen from space seemed the perfect idea and the whole team was delighted with the result.”

With its all-round suspension, four-wheel steering, multiple implement mountings and high road speed, the Fastrac was the perfect tractor to take on the job.

The Fastrac is manufactured at JCB’s plant in Cheadle, Staffordshire, 10 miles from the market town of Uttoxeter where the late Joseph Cyril Bamford founded JCB in a lock-up garage on the same day as his son Anthony, now Lord Bamford, was born.

One of JCB’s longest-standing customers has unwrapped a unique present – a vintage backhoe loader restored to its former glory to mark the digger maker’s approaching 75th anniversary.

Lincolnshire-based Eric Carnaby & Son has been a customer since 1959 and over the following six decades has bought more than 150 JCB machines.

Now JCB has said thank you to the firm for its loyalty by restoring the Carnaby family’s cherished 1964 JCB 1 backhoe.

The project was kept a closely guarded secret until George Bamford – grandson of JCB Founder Joseph Cyril Bamford CBE – sprung the restoration surprise during a visit to the company’s base in Immingham, near Grimsby, to collect the machine. Now six months later the backhoe has been handed back to the company after a team at JCB’s world headquarters in Rocester, Staffordshire spent hundreds of hours lovingly restoring it.

Eric Carnaby & Son director Roland Carnaby junior said,“My family and I are over the moon with the restoration. Our JCB 1 is precious to us and we’ve been meaning to restore it for some time, but you know how it is – a business to run and all that.”

George Bamford said, “It has been amazing to see an old machine brought back to life by the JCB team. It looks just as it would have done on the day it came off the production line in 1964.”

Founded by Eric Carnaby in 1946, the plant hire and road haulage firm is now run by fatherand-son team, Roland Carnaby senior and Roland Carnaby junior.

The company’s first JCB purchase was a JCB 4 backhoe in 1959 and it was the JCB backhoe loader that formed the backbone of the Eric Carnaby & Son fleet for many years to come – with up to 12 in operation during the 1970s and 1980s. The company’s most recent purchase was the latest X Series excavator. The two family businesses have been strongly intertwined throughout the 61-year period, with 95 per cent of the Eric Carnaby & Son fleet now made up of JCB equipment. JCB marks its 75th birthday on October 23.

After discussions with key stakeholders and feedback from industry-leading concrete and masonry associations, World of Concrete made the decision to reschedule WOC 2021 from January to June. World of Concrete’s decision to move the dates back several months was not easily reached but it was felt that it was the right choice for all involved.

WOC will now take place on 8 – 10 June, educational offerings 7 – 10 June, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Jackie James, Group Director, World of Concrete said: “We have a commitment to our exhibitors and attendees to provide a valuable and productive face-to-face experience at WOC each year. This is the first time in our 46-year history we have been faced with circumstances that have caused us to reschedule the event.

“We feel the new June dates will provide everyone with the necessary time to plan effectively and allow us to reimagine WOC for a different time of the year. Moving the event from winter to late spring in 2021 will allow for additional outdoor activities everyone can enjoy in the great city of Las Vegas, including topnotch exhibits, new product demos and exciting spectator events.”

The Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) has been awarded the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR facility accreditation by ISSA, the Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association.

The GBAC programme is considered the gold standard for safe facilities and was designed to control the risks associated with infectious agents, including COVID-19. World of Concrete is also one of the first large-scale events to occupy The Las Vegas Convention Center’s $980 million West Hall expansion, which will add 1.4 million square feet of space to the existing 3.2 million square foot campus.

In addition to the exhibit hall, the expansion will feature a striking outdoor plaza, a grand atrium and state-of-the-art design and technology.

Registration for WOC 2021 will open online in early 2021.

CPA ANNOUNCES THE CONSTRUCTION PLANT INDUSTRY’S STARS OF THE FUTURE FOR 2020 The UK’s most promising apprentices and trainees in the construction plant sector have been announced at the Construction Plant-hire Association’s (CPA) Stars of the Future 2020 online awards event.

Held in association with headline sponsor Sunbelt Rentals, the CPA’s Stars of the Future awards scheme identifies some of the industry’s brightest up-and-coming talent. More than 70 nominations were received for the CPA Stars of the Future 2020 awards – the CPA’s highest ever figure in the eight years that the awards programme has been running.

2020 was a landmark year as it was the first time that the event has been hosted online. Plans had been in place to host a physical Stars of the Future awards ceremony at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Warwickshire earlier this year, but sadly this was unable to take place due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, the CPA felt it was important to continue with the awards programme to recognise and reward the talents and achievements of apprentices and trainees in the plant sector, especially in these challenging times.

Stars of the Future was originally introduced to recognise outstanding plant mechanics and plant technicians, but the scope of the event has been extended in recent years to reward further job roles in the construction plant sector and recognise new Trailblazer apprenticeships.

As well as Sunbelt Rentals, the event was supported by sponsors L Lynch Plant Hire, ACOP Group, Flannery Plant Hire, Liebherr (GB) Ltd, NOCN Group and Snap-on Tools. CPA Chief Executive Kevin Minton opened the online awards event before Rob Squires, CPA Training and Safety Manager, announced the winners.

Judges’ Special Award

The winners will receive some impressive prizes, including Snap-on tool kits, week-long training courses and iPads. Stars of the Future 2020 had a two-tier judging process – the CPA selection panel and a panel of external industry-expert judges who decided the eventual winners of each category.

The external judging panel included Siôn Morgan Jones of ACOP Group, Kirsty Archbold-Laming of Southern Hoist Services, Arran Willis of Liebherr (GB) Ltd, Paul Whitehead of Highways England, Tim Brownbridge of BAM Nuttall and Ed Hudson, who has recently retired but continues to act as co-chair for the construction equipment maintenance apprenticeship working group.

The National Plant Mechanic of the Year (Level 2) accolade was awarded to Adam Rees of Machinery Movements and Crane Hire and Bridgend College. The judges said they were very impressed by the high level of confidence and self-assurance that Adam showed, with his clear commitment and loyalty to his employer shining through strongly. The judges were further impressed by the fact that Adam had undertaken additional training and certification for lifting operation responsibilities.

Rhys Nigel John of MarubeniKomatsu and NSCG Stafford College was the winner of the National Plant Technician of the Year (Level 3) award.

The judges stated that it was clear that Rhys has a stunning future ahead of him, with the attitude and demeanour to take on leadership roles. Judges described him as an exceptional young man who displayed passion and pride in not only his work but in providing help to others – whether peers or trainees.

The Lifting Technician of the Year accolade was awarded to Luke Reddish of Wolffkran. In deciding a winner for this category, the judges were highly impressed by Luke’s excellent teamwork and leadership skills and his submission showed that Luke wanted to be the best lifting technician in his field.

They noted that he showed excellent leadership and academic skills.

Danielle Taylor of Flannery Plant Hire was the winner of the fiercely contested Plant Operative of the Year category. The judges admired Danielle’s journey to becoming a plant operator, coming from finance to the construction industry. As one judge noted – “from the frying pan to the fire”. The judges were highly impressed by Danielle’s

commitment and passion for the job, entering a new and very different career, inspired by her family. They were further impressed by how she actively helped to recruit new blood to the industry.

The judges were unanimous in awarding Iveta Tomasevska of Flannery Plant Hire the new Hire Controller of the Year award. They thought she was a confident, bright person with excellent communication skills and a genuine passion for the industry, always wanting to learn more about the machines she was hiring out. In summary, the judges said she had great customer focus and the positive attitude every workplace needs, predicting that with her drive for knowledge and continuous improvement, Iveta will be a very bright star.

The CPA Prize for the Best Personal Statement was awarded to Senghan Carr of L Lynch Plant Hire. Senghan

was judged to have produced the most inspiring personal statement as part of his nomination, reflecting on his apprenticeship journey and what it meant to him, his employer and his family.

What impressed the panel was not only the commitment, recognition and clearlyconveyed account made by Senghan of his occupation, industry and employer, but the fact that it was delivered in a very natural, humble but engaging way.

The final award of the event was the Judges’ Special Award and the winner was Scott Laurenson of EMN Plant.

In deciding a worthy winner for this special award, the judges wanted to reward the apprentice who showed not only a commitment to their trade but also someone who gave something back to their industry and society in general.

What marked Scott out to the judges was not only his commitment to formal

training – regularly flying from the Scottish island where he lives to Glasgow to undertake his studies, requiring weeks away from home – but also a real sense of community as he is a retained firefighter in his local area.

Kevin Minton, Chief Executive of the CPA says, “We would like to congratulate all the nominees and winners of Stars of the Future for 2020. We were absolutely delighted to have over 130 attendees join us online. Although we weren’t able to meet the nominees and winners this year and personally hand over their certificates, glass awards and prizes, this doesn’t in any way diminish their achievements. Record-breaking plant equipment auctions show the strength of the pre-Brexit construction sector One part of the economy for which doom and gloom predictions have not materialised is the used construction plant sector, as Ritchie Bros. has witnessed with its recent auctions in September.

The world’s largest heavy equipment auctioneer switched to online-only auctions during the pandemic and has seen record-breaking auctions all over Europe, including in the UK. The auctioneer has held auctions in June and September at its Maltby site in the UK, seeing massive increases in the number of items sold, indicating equipment utilisation is at peak levels, with the market showing a strong appetite for used machinery.

The high level of auction lots has been driven by the need to release capital for fleet renewals and a change in focus for an industry that is now more driven by asset utilisation, as Rupert Craven from Ritchie Bros. UK explains. “With infrastructure and housing projects driving demand for plant, and HS2 in particular focusing on emissions and productivity, we are seeing a need for plant operators to invest in new equipment and a reduction in the average fleet renewal cycle. “Also, when it comes to buyers, due to a squeeze on the availability of new equipment with factories catching up from lockdowns, there has been a surge in demand for younger equipment that meets the emissions standards demanded by larger projects. This favourably impacts bidding activity and, therefore, the returns for articulated dump trucks, technologyenabled excavators from 20 tonnes and above, and other in-demand items.”

The UK and The Netherlands auctions were held in the same week in September, with 6,500 lots sold. UK equipment owners also sold items at the Moerdijk, The Netherlands auction as a gateway to the European market.

Equipment buyers embraced e-commerce amid the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly doubling bidder registrations compared to the September 2019 auction.

Changing behaviours reshaping the industry

Rupert Craven, who’s been working in the heavy machinery industry for 20 years, has seen the mentality of the market change during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Businesses now look much harder at lifecycle costs, utilisation and equipment valuation. Particularly with the latter, more businesses are calling us to guide them through the process of fleet evaluation and disposition options that can include selling newer equipment by utilising our data to obtain the best prices.”

An interesting new phenomenon is that companies in the UK and Europe “buy for the job” and resell. Craven says, “We have witnessed plant being bought for a six to twelve-month job and then being resold at our Maltby auction with residuals holding up very well.”

Where the auctions pre-COVID were attended both in-person and online, they’re now only held online with an easy-to-use bidding system that is open for several days. Although born out of necessity, the online-only auction format attracted a record number of participants and generated strong returns for sellers.

Craven continues, “What is also interesting is the change in the online bidder profile, which again has been dramatic, as more people get comfortable with doing business online. There are now many more bidders globally and a large

increase in individual bidders, following the other trends we are seeing.

“What is clear is the construction and plant sector is in much better shape than most commentators predicted and in some cases with large infrastructure projects, we are even into boom times, the likes that have not been seen since the motorway building era. And of course, we can’t underestimate the continued global demand for equipment that has been well looked after by UK plant operators.”

Ritchie Bros. conducts auctions across the world and is currently in the final stages of a major redevelopment of its new 20-hectare site at the old Maltby Colliery, South Yorkshire, where it carries out auctions throughout the year. The auctions continue to be held online only for now, with interested buyers viewing items both on the website and the auction yard.

The next Ritchie Bros. auction in Maltby will be held on 26 and 27 November, presenting an opportunity for businesses to sell before the end of the year or add items to their fleet.

IMPROVING RECYCLING AND REDUCING WASTE IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY As efforts to combat climate change intensify, an emphasis on tackling the impact of waste on our environment has become a crucial factor to solving the climate emergency. Here, Matthew Bastable of BPH Attachments discusses the importance of improving reuse and recycling rates in construction The construction industry is under increasing pressure to reduce waste.

According to a report by The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), the sector uses 400 million tonnes of material every year, resulting in 100 million tonnes of waste. This accounts for a staggering third of the UK’s total yearly waste, with a massive 25 million tonnes of construction waste ending up in landfill.

Generating site waste is often unavoidable but construction companies still have a legal obligation to ensure it is properly managed and that waste is reused or recycled wherever possible through a Site Waste Management Plan

(SWMP). Sending waste to landfill should only be a last resort. However, 13 per cent of products delivered to construction sites are sent directly to landfill without having been used. This has not only huge implications for the environment, but a significant effect on a company’s bottom line.

By using materials in a better way and reducing, reusing and sorting waste for recycling, construction companies could save thousands of pounds per project and minimise the impact they have on the environment.

Managing waste on construction sites can be a complicated and time consuming business. But, through careful

planning, it is possible to eliminate waste and identify materials that can be reused and recycled.

Having a clear understanding of the project and choosing materials wisely from the outset will help to encourage more effective waste disposal planning.

Common types of construction waste include: • • • • • • • •

Concrete, bricks, tiles, cement and ceramics Wood, glass and plastic Insulation materials, including asbestos Bituminous mixtures, coal tar and tar Metallic waste such as pipes Soil, stones and dredging Paints and varnishes Sealants and adhesives

Sorting waste for reuse and recycling While understanding which materials can be reused and recycled successfully is pivotal to reducing waste going to landfill, this also relies on the processes adopted to recover it and prevent it from ending up in landfill unintentionally.

Materials should always be screened before being sent to landfill. THE MONEY PIT: SOLVING THE POTHOLES PROBLEM Potholes have been an endless source of frustration for road users across the UK with insurance companies paying out millions each year in car repair claims.

Matthew Bastable, from BPH Attachments, examines how our highways have become failing infrastructure in need of urgent repair Each year, around 38.4 million vehicles travel on Great Britain’s 246,700-mile road network, making them crucial for connecting communities, the movement of goods and maintaining the economy.

According to the Department for Transport, 66 per cent of vehicle miles travelled in 2019 were on motorways and A roads, with the remainder travelled on minor roads. Although local authorities are attempting to repair roads as quickly as possible, potholes have continued to plague the country’s road network, damaging vehicles and posing a danger to road users, sometimes fatally.

Vulnerable road users are especially at risk. Figures from the Department for Transport show that more than 250 cyclists have been killed or seriously injured due to poorly maintained roads in the last five years.

Most recently, a woman from Lancashire was killed during a 50-mile bike ride after hitting a 2.5-inch-deep pothole and losing control. Another woman from Merseyside was also involved in a fatal crash after a pothole caused her to veer into the path of an oncoming car.

Potholes in the UK have been increasing at an alarming rate over the

past few years. According to the AIA (Asphalt Industry Alliance), 11 per cent of England’s roads (excluding London) are in poor condition, with a further 25 per cent showing some deterioration. It estimates that more than 22,000 miles of road are likely to require maintenance in 2020, at a cost of £9.8 billion to local authorities over the next 10 years.

However, on average, each local authority faces a £4.1 million shortfall in annual carriageway maintenance budgets – a figure that has increased year on year and is only likely to get worse as budgets are cut.

Concerns about adequate funding have persisted for years, however, according to AIA’s data, the cost of filling potholes has fallen from over £70 to nearly £50 in the last 10 years. But what this doesn’t reflect is the quality of the repairs undertaken or the longevity of the surface dressing.

A pothole resolution?

It’s clear there is no quick fix to the pothole problem. Limitations on local authorities have meant that pothole repairs have become a reactive issue rather than a problem that is solved proactively.

The less frequently a road surface is fully

replaced, the more likely it is to have problems with degradation, including the formation of potholes – creating an endless cycle of pothole, repair and repeat.

Unrepaired potholes have a huge impact on the taxpayer. In the last year, local authorities have paid out £22.5 million in compensation claims due to road surface defects. Using taxpayer money to upgrade the road networks would be a far better use of funds than paying compensation claims.

Issues with potholes don’t just include the associated costs with carrying out the work, but also the time taken to complete the repairs. Roadworks can cause a huge headache for those using the road networks, often creating long tailbacks and adding time onto journeys.

The average driver will spend over a day a year sitting in traffic at a cost of more than £1,100 in wasted fuel and time.

There are hopes that innovations made in recent years will address this problem. While traditionally many contractors have used road planers or ‘top cutters’ to strip the tarmac so that an excavator can then dig a trench for the replacement section, plant machinery attachments are proving to be invaluable for both time and cost savings. For example, the PRODEM Patch Planer, which can be mounted directly onto an excavator or skid-steer already on site, removes the necessity for separate, large road planing equipment and cuts 120mm deep in two passes. Such equipment has proved to reduce both the time taken and the costs involved to undertake repairs.

Meanwhile, some councils are opting for trialling new materials. These include self-repairing asphalt, recycled plastic fillers and automated paving technology to help improve surfacing quality.

Automated paving technology will collect data that can be combined with manufacturing information to create an accurate record of the condition and material composition of a road.

The future for pothole maintenance is hazy. There is no consensus across local authorities or government as to how to solve the issue in the long term. However, what is apparent is the consequences of allowing our highways to deteriorate without planned and preventative maintenance or regular road resurfacing. As roads worsen, not only do the costs and time of resolving problems increase, but injuries and fatalities will continue to occur – and nobody should have to pay for a pothole with their life.

GOLDHOFER AND UTM – TRANSPORT OF THE FUTURE Your company has placed its trust in Goldhofer’s products and services since 1980, and you have been collaborating on vehicle development for 20 years. What is the basis of this forty-year relationship?

MF: There are several reasons. Goldhofer stands for outstanding product quality, intelligent transport solutions, long years of experience and close customer relations. We feel understood and know that we will get exactly the solution we need. So it is not surprising that more than one third of our heavy-duty fleet of over 500 vehicles are from Goldhofer.

Universal Transport will soon be transporting turbine blades, nacelles and tower sections for wind power plants on 62 new THP/SL-S (285) axle lines supplied by Goldhofer. Do you need to increase the size of your fleet for wind power transportation? What prompted your decision?

FR: With the THP/SL-S series vehicles, we are completely replacing the Goldhofer THP/ET pendular axle modules we have been using to date. In concrete terms this means lower deadweight, very high payloads, 1,500mm axle spacing instead of 1,400mm and greater lateral stability thanks to an increase in vehicle width from 2,750mm to 3,000mm. What’s more, with a suspension stroke of 600mm we can now raise the maximum loading height to 1,600mm above the axles – an enormous advantage in terms of extra height for negotiating obstacles.

With this unique constellation, we can comply with Germany’s strict regulations for transporting heavy loads, including weight limits on bridges. It also enables us to provide safer, more flexible and above all, more economical delivery of wind power plant components. The new single

wheel bogies with four 19-inch tires per axle line and the above-average loading height available are exactly the right solution for us in the context of construction site traffic for wind power plants.

The reason we are going for a full replacement is to have a high degree of standardisation with regard to the axle systems used. This is the key to simplified and flexible solutions in choosing exactly the right combination for the operation involved.

MF: The changeover also enables us to anticipate the increasingly strict regulatory requirements in Germany – because technically speaking, there is no such thing as an old Goldhofer vehicle; they are too good for that and have such a long service life. At all events we are convinced that the THP/ET heavy-duty modules we are selling will continue to provide reliable service to their new owners for many years to come.

To what extent are your twenty years of cooperation with Goldhofer reflected in vehicle developments?

MF: As far as I can judge, Goldhofer has brought a number of vehicles to market that were directly influenced by our wishes and brainstormed together. Some of these advances were subsequently adopted by the competition. A case in point is the design of the first railway vehicle transporters with two pendular axles right behind the gooseneck followed by a bogie with steering knuckle axles. Goldhofer dispelled the doubts raised at the time as to whether the combination of these two steering systems was possible by developing the project with us and then simply implementing it as a first mover. Today they all use this system for the better load distribution it offers.

With a vehicle width of three metres, axle spacing of 1.5 metres and a higher bending moment, the singlewheel modules have been ordered as a replacement for the German company’s current Goldhofer THP/ET modules.

Howard Civil Engineering expands fleet with Komatsu utility range Howard Civil Engineering, founded in 2003 by Michael Howard, is one of the leading civil engineering companies in the north and specialises in four key disciplines: RC Frames, S278 works, roads and sewers and groundworks.

The family run business prides itself for working alongside a number of prestigious clients such as BAM, Wates, Willmott Dixon and GMI Construction.

MECALAC 6MCR AND 7MWR EXCAVATORS GAIN HYDRAULIC THUMB Mecalac Construction Equipment UK has launched a factory-designed hydraulic thumb attachment, suitable for its 6MCR crawler-skid excavator and 7MWR wheeled excavator with twopiece boom.

Designed for a variety of handling applications, the hydraulic thumb makes it significantly faster and easier to hold and move large or long objects. From rocks and branches to concrete debris, the attachment allows for precise operation and placement thanks to proportional control via the excavator’s right joystick thumbwheel.

The thumb is comprised of four stainless steel tines and has manual shut-off valves on both sides of the cylinder to isolate the attachment when not in use. Unlike the grapple, the thumb can be kept on the machine with no need to change tools, even when digging.

Designed for use with a Mecalac CONNECT hydraulic quick coupler, the thumb is controlled via the first auxiliary line (high flow). Classified as a handling device, rather than a lifting device, it does not require safety check valves.

The highlight of egapark is Danakil, consisting of a Desert and Jungle house with quite a special visitor experience.

EMISSIONS-FREE MACHINES IMPRESS IN CONSTRUCTION OF DESERT AND JUNGLE HOUSE In Erfurt, preparations are being made for the National Garden Show (BUGA) taking place in 2021. In designing one of the highlights, the Danakil Desert and Jungle House, only emissions-free construction machines and equipment were considered. This was not only to protect the exotic plants but also to enable efficient working – an ideal construction site for the zero-emissions solutions by Wacker Neuson.

For this special project, Managing Director Udo Lindenlaub has put his trust in Wacker Neuson. “We have been working together with Wacker Neuson for almost 50 years. In this special application, we were able to test the electric construction machines and equipment by Wacker Neuson ourselves.”

All products in the zero-emissions range work free of exhaust emissions and are extremely quiet, without compromising performance. “Employees are protected as, due to the sensitive plants, opening windows or doors or using fans is not possible during the work on the Danakil house. Sensitive plants are not exposed to any exhaust emissions either and no damage is caused,” Lindenlaub explains. What’s more, zero-emissions machines and equipment are particularly easy to operate, supply sufficient energy for a typical workday and can really score points in confined work environments due to their compact dimensions.

Emissions-free, from the vibratory rammer to the excavator

Almost the entire zero-emissions portfolio of Wacker Neuson was in use in the building of the Danakil house. The miniexcavator EZ17e, the latest addition to the zero-emissions series, was responsible for the excavation work needed to install the plants. Besides this, its tasks included moving natural stones. No problem for

the 1.5 tonne electric excavator as it has the same performance as the conventional model. This is provided by the highquality lithium ion battery technology, which has been employed by Wacker Neuson for several years and is especially durable. It can be charged at a household outlet (110-230 volts) or by quick charging with high-voltage current (415 volts) in only four hours.

In material transport, the electric wheel loader WL20e and the electric wheel dumper DW15e demonstrated their skills. Both machines are equipped with high-quality AGM batteries (Absorbent Glass Mat), which are easy to handle and low maintenance. The wheel loader was used for a variety of applications on this project including loading earth on to the dumper with its 0.2 cubic-metre shovel and transporting materials using a pallet fork.

The wheel dumper DW15e has a payload of 1.5 tonnes is equipped with twin electric motors, one for the drive system and another for the hydraulics, to independently manage output and minimise energy consumption. Likewise, regenerative braking charges the battery when slowing down or travelling downhill.

To prepare the paths in the Danakil house, the ground was compacted using a battery-powered rammer, with a batterypowered vibratory plate deployed in

larger areas. Both compaction equipment devices can be operated with the same modular lithium-ion battery, which can be replaced in no time.

Environmental protection as a driving force

Kathrin Weiss concluded, “Fundamentally, issues such as sustainability and climate and environmental protection are particularly important to us at BUGA. This means that we are very happy when there are zero emissions as well as zero noise on construction sites. Visitors to

the egapark benefit from this too, as they can experience for themselves what kind of new things are being created for the exhibition.�

The zero-emissions range by Wacker Neuson includes three battery-powered rammers; three battery-operated vibratory plates; the dual power excavator, to which an electro-hydraulic drive unit can be connected in addition to the diesel engine; an electric mini-excavator; an electric wheel loader; electrically operated track and wheel dumpers; and an internal vibrator system for concrete compaction.

point and there are larger mirrors for an improved view behind the machine when manoeuvring around site or when roading. Revised square work lights offer increased adjustment and the LED option now includes up to 10 lights, providing maximum illumination of the working area.

The cab interior provides a new level of comfort and usability. It features a split colour line, with darker grey for the lower half and a lighter grey in the upper half of the cabin. This adds to the airy, spacious feel, providing the operator with a calm, comfortable working environment. There is a new seat, with a dark fabric and yellow stitching and a headrest is available on the Advanced Easy Control (AEC) model.

A revised three-spoke steering wheel provides an improved view of the new front display screen, which comes as standard on the latest 3CX. The screen shows the speedometer, all warning lights and the selected gear on Powershift models. For the first time JCB will also supply a factory-fit radio with Bluetooth telephone compatibility and USB, AUX and SD card capabilities. The radio is integrated into the headliner, but can be controlled by a rotary switch in the side console. Audio and telephone functions are also displayed in the new seven-inch side display screen.

This side screen provides the operator with increased functionality and increased information. The display is controlled by an automotive-style rotary switch that provides quick access to the various operating menus.

Automatic levelling lets the machine rapidly find a horizontal operating position on uneven ground.

Auto Drive has been improved, allowing the operator to automatically select a chosen engine speed when travelling on the road. Operation has been made easier with a new lever mounted beneath the direction selection control.

To reduce unnecessary tyre wear and fuel consumption, the 3CX now comes with Auto 2WD. This switches the transmission from 4WD to 2WD when the additional traction is no longer required. It allows the operator to select 4WD to dig into a pile or a face, where maximum traction is required. When the machine backs away and starts to travel at speed, the transmission automatically changes to 2WD. The speed at which this change occurs can be set by the operator

through the side screen menus.

Additional lighting has been added to illuminate the cab on both sides of the machine around the step area, making it easier for the operator to access and leave the machine in the dark. A timer can be set to automatically dim the lighting when the machine is switched off, or once the door has been closed. The 3CX also benefits from a host of standard features, including rear light guards, a return-todig system, front shovel clam cylinder guards, loader pipework and the loader Smooth Ride System.

Stage V power

The 55kW 3CX is powered by JCB’s latest EU Stage V compliant three-litre diesel engine, replacing the previous generation 4.4-litre. The compact engine delivers 55kW of power and 440Nm of torque, an increase of 10 per cent over the previous

The 55kW Stage V 3CX introduces a range of advanced automation features, designed to reduce operator fatigue and boost productivity. This includes Auto Stop, which automatically detects when the machine is no longer in use and shuts down the engine. Auto Stop eliminates engine idling, reducing fuel consumption and cutting emissions. The shutdown delay can be pre-set or adjusted by the operator through the side screen in the cab.

Auto Seat Select is available on machines equipped with servo lever control and automatically recognises which direction the seat is facing, eliminating the need to select functions as the operator changes from front to rear facing positions. Also available on servo models, automatic stabilisers now offer not just an auto-raise function, but also an automatic extend setting, stopping as the feet make contact with the ground.

MB SCREENING BUCKET MB-S MEETS THE NEWEST MEMBER OF MB CRUSHER FLEET, THE MB-HDS So much has happened since the launch of the HDS padding bucket series on that April day at Bauma 2019. The performers on the stage, the loud music, the lights are now all a fading memory. The buckets have been in the field for more than a year now. Dues have been paid and everyone is ready to talk about the whispers going around.

In a double “interview”, newcomer to the padding bucket line, HDS, is accompanied by the rotary screening bucket MB-S in talking about their strengths, differences and part in the MB Crusher team.

MB-HDS, are you here to replace the MB-S? MB-HDS320: Absolutely not. We are complementary but ultimately different tools. It seems complicated but in reality, it is very easy so let me try to explain.

On one job in USA the task was simple – separating the sand from the rocks on a trenching project. I was the right tool for the job because I could get the fine material directly into the trench thanks to my shape and the material coming out at the bottom. Alternatively the MB-S14 was chosen to clean a beach in Spain because it was the best choice for that particular job.

MB-S14: Yes, they needed to separate trash from sand on this jobsite in Valencia for the upcoming summer season. The most important quality was sizing. Once the appropriate sized grid is chosen, anything bigger will not pass through the holes, keeping larger material inside the basket.

So you separated the sand in different ways. What else?

MB-HDS314: We were both on a site in Hungary working on topsoil.

The goal was to have clean and fine material.

The first job was at the Bozsik football stadium; the soil needed to be processed as a base for the new pitch. The second job was a trench excavation between a pre-existing prison and a new building complex.

In theory both attachments could be used in both scenarios. What made them choose one of us over the other?

The consistency of the topsoil was the deal breaker.

MB-S18: I worked on the football pitch with a 10x10 mm screen. The excavated soil was nice and dry but contained a lot of rocks, so it needed to be sieved and laid out uniformly to hold the following grass layer. The trench material was wet and full of clumps of dirt – this was an ideal job for the MB-HDS Shafts Screener as its star discs are able to work and break up the material even if damp and compact.

So as I understand it, the critical factor is the job type and the desired outcome?

MB-S: Yes, exactly. Let’s take rocks and stone chippings for example. Both units can process them with ease. The difference lies in the desired result.

As a trommel screener, I work well to grade materials and separate the fine from the course. In other words, create a ready to use product. An example would be when I was used in the Czech Republic to build a railway.

The main requirement on this job was the output size of the material.

HDS: While I processed demolition waste material, when they needed a high production rate and volume to screen the material.

Is there anything that one attachment can do while the other can’t?

HDS: Yes, there are jobs and materials that are better suited to one unit rather than the other. Compost is a good example. I can easily aerate and break up this material thanks to the shafts in my bucket. A MB-HDS320 was used in France to aerate compost, while a German company chose a smaller unit an MB-LS314. The same goes for twigs and scrubs, which are broken up by the discs on my shafts ready to be reused.

MB-S: It’s true, with my trommel screen I wouldn’t be able to process compost. It would be impossible, the material would clump up and it wouldn’t have the desired effect.

If the material is particularly abrasive, however, I’m the perfect choice. The same goes for iron and steel scraps.

With this type of material, there would be a high wear on the HDS shafts, which doesn’t affect me.

My basket panels allow me to separate and sieve fine material to the selected size with ease. For example, when working with scrap metal, fine soil, dust and flakes fall through my holes while the larger pieces of metal stay in the basket.

So not enemies. Just two attachments that complement each other depending on the job at hand and required end product. Having both on the jobsite wouldn’t be a bad idea. Just saying.

HOFMANN KRAN-VERMIETUNG USES USES ‘bladeS’ TO HANDLE LATEST GENERATION OF WIND TURBINE BLADES

For transporting extra-long wind turbine blades, Hofmann Kran-Vermietung GmbH & Co. KG of Paderborn is now using the new ‘bladeS’ blade hauler in combination with Goldhofer’s selftracking trailing dolly. The German company, whose portfolio includes work platforms, heavy transport vehicles and industrial erection in addition to crane rentals, is one of the first companies to invest in the trailing dolly solution, which was introduced only last year.

On their latest job, which included the transportation of three 75-metre-long wind turbine blades from Rostock to the Hopsten-Schale wind farm more than 400 kilometres away, their new equipment was again the key to safe and punctual delivery.

In order to transport three wind turbine blades from the German coast of the Baltic Sea to their destination in Hopsten, Westphalia, the Paderborn heavy haulage experts relied entirely on special vehicles from the house of Goldhofer. The over 400-kilometre journey from Rostock was mainly on motorways, and it was possible to make

reliable calculations of the expected forces acting on the blades and vehicle components. The fact that the three vehicle combinations, each over 82 metres long, were able to complete the journey in the record time of three days was mainly due to the use of the new ‘bladeS’ in combination with a trailing dolly from Goldhofer.

The combination of a blade root carrier on the gooseneck and a five-axle trailing dolly with pneumatic suspension plus turntable and blade support is a new industry benchmark.

With this system, several roundabouts and tight turns were negotiated without any difficulties. As the turbine blade itself has a structural function within the configuration, the solution offers significantly higher ground clearance than extendable vehicles so that the blade simply passes over various obstacles.
