March/April 2025 Newsletter
This term has been full of exciting events, visits and visitors. The pupils have continued to have the chance to find different ways of how they can apply the dispositions of learning to their everyday life as well as learning how staff and adults apply them every day. During my Phase Assemblies, the pupils shared the dispositions that they use outside school either during sports activities, learning or simple tasks in the home. It has been wonderful to hear their stories and for them to be able to speak confidently and clearly in front of an audience including their peers.
We were also very pleased to have Jas Athwal MP returning to the school once again. His talk with years five and six was inspirational as he recalled hisjourney to becoming an MP. The pupils keenly listened to how he emigrated to England from India without a word of English. There were some very interesting and pertinent questions asked by the pupils at the end of the assembly followed by a meeting with the School Council who raised local issues with him. It was a great opportunity and one that shall be repeated.
Keep a look out for other exciting events and news and enjoy reading this bumper edition of the Chadwell Newsletter. The staff continue to work tirelessly to teach and support
Thank you to all of you for your on-going support and commitment to the school community.
Kind regards, Ms. Kalhan

We are lucky at Chadwell Primary, to have an Orchestra club. We currently have around 34 children in the club from years 5-6 who play violin, cello, flute, recorder, piano, glockenspiel, metallophone, untuned percussion, timpani drums, steel pan and even harps! We’ve been getting used to the challenge of following a conductor, playing independent parts whilst other people play something differently, being adaptable at counting rests, changing dynamics (getting louder and quieter). We also have an orchestral manager who is learning the valuable skill of administration, librarianship, setting up, ensuring personnel are all present which is a very valuable and important role to ensure the orchestra rehearsals are able to run smoothly. As part of orchestra’s development, we arranged for tickets for the children to go and watch the world famous London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican centre in London. We watched a programme entitled TheLostThingfeaturing music by composers Louise Farrenc, Samuel Coleridge Taylor, John Williams, Modest Mussorgsky and finally a piece

Year 6 were lucky to take part in a series of mini workshops, held in Iford which were designed to help them with key life skills in preparation for secondary school.
There were activities and scenarios from Metropolitan Police, Transport for London, London Fire Brigade, Thames Water and youth service providers. They learnt skills such as what to do in an emergency, how to stay safe online, being aware when using a mobile phone and how to use public transport safely.
Here are what some of our pupils thought of the visit:

“The part that I found the most exciting was practicing what to do when a smoke alarm went off and why it is important that these are fitted and that the Fire Brigade can come and fit them for free. It also gave us a great excuse to shout ‘Fire’ really loudly!” Arfa
“We had to decide what we might do if someone tried to get our mobile phone when we are on the street. We had to discuss with the police officers what we would do in this situation- we decided it wouldn’t be a good idea to chase the thief, but call 999 instead.”
Aidan S
“We were taught to think carefully before sharing any photos of ourselves online- we were surprised to learn that sharing other people's pictures without permission could mean that we could get in trouble with the police and this could have consequences for us in later life.”
Adeeva

Last month, Year 2 visited Epping Forest for their Science topic ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ with a focus on microhabitats.
The children had to search for mini-beasts around different microhabitats which included under logs, in leaf litter and in the pond. They used a range of equipment to collect the mini-beasts, including nets, buckets, trays, spoon, magnifying glass and a mini-beast chart to identify the different types of mini-beasts.

During Life Skills session, a few children from Year 5 & Year 6, had ventured out to Lidl. Our topic for this month was Healthy Eating for Body and Mind. The children were asked to choose a piece of fruit, vegetable, or salad that they have not tried before. It was interesting to see their views after tasting the new fruit or vegetable of their choice. They also had the opportunity to try more than one fruit or vegetable from this selection: Dragon fruit, lettuce, tangerines, mangoes, strawberries, lime, celery, hot pepper, watermelon & raspberries.

was feeding the goats. The children loved getting up and close to the friendly animals, offering them food and watching how they ate. It was a wonderful way to learn about herbivore and their diets.

Year 5-6 choir have been practising since December 2024 to prepare for their debut concert at the world-famous Royal Albert Hall concert in London. Together with most of the schools in Redbridge, we have learnt a whole book full of songs on the theme of the 60 years of the London Borough of Redbridge in order to prepare for a concert. We left Chadwell at around 10.15am and travelled by coach to Kensington. The children were amazed and excited by how large and special the Hall was inside and out! We spent the afternoon practising our songs with the orchestra and all the other schools for around 4 hours which took a lot of concentration. After a much-deserved dinner break, we made our way back into the hall ready to start the concert. The lights drew low and then it was time to begin! A packed audience of family and friends were there to cheer us on. We sang songs such as Price Tag,NileRodgersDiscoMix, a MatildaMedley and gave the world’s first performance of StarsofTomorrowby Kayleigh Burton (who was one of our conductors!)
Around 9.50pm, it was time to try and make our way back to the coach, to arrive back at Chadwell around 11.15pm! The children behaved really well, sang confidently and beautifully and made us ALL proud! I would like to thank Mrs Turner for all her support in preparing choir for the concert and Mrs Spiceley and Mrs Chana for giving up their time to learn the songs and help us keep the children safe. We do hope you join choir again. Well done choir and thank you parents for your support! We’ll do the same thing again in 2025!
If you would like to join choir in the Summer term and are in Year 5-6, let Mrs Peugniez know. It would be lovely to have some new members as well as our wonderful 29 children who sang in this concert!

Redbridge Music School String Quartet recital 26th March 2025
We organised a visit by the Redbridge Music School string quartet who came to give two concerts one to years 2,3,4 and 5. They played a variety of pieces of music and asked the children questions about the music, such as what type of dance the music was for and which instrument was playing the tune. It was a great opportunity for the children

Since Monday 3rd March, we have been hosting a family learning course with the focus around understanding English. The classes have been led by a tutor from the Redbridge Institute for Adult learning and attended by a number of parents, regularly.
The purpose of the course is to help parents gain a better understanding of the National Curriculum whilst working on their own English.
The Keeping up with Children English course has run for a total of 5 weeks. Please see some feedback from parents who attended the course below.
I learnt new words, I understand better now phonics and I feel more confident in helping my child with this now.
Thank you so much to Chadwell Primary School for this opportunity. I really enjoyed the course.
Angela, the teacher, explained clearly and step by step with example all the topics touched in this course. She gave her best to make sure this course will be useful for us.
Keep your eyes peeled for more family learning courses coming to Chadwell Primary School soon!!!
On the 7th March we were lucky to have a visit from Mr Jas Athwal, our local Member of Parliament. We held an assembly where he spoke to Year 5 and 6. He told us about moving to this country and how he had to work hard to achieve things in his life.
In his speech he said how he had used some of our Dispositions of Learning to overcome the challenges he faced during his life, and he gave various examples.
He explained that he was & years old when he came to England from India and had nothing. His mum used to hand make all his clothes and had to learn how to speak English. He has worked very hard and achieved something incredible by becoming a Member of Parliament.
During our previous school council meeting we had discussed what questions we could ask Mr Athwal about our local area. School Council then had a meeting with him after the assembly and were able to ask some of the questions.
We brought up several concerns about the area and he gave a good explanation as to what we could do to help. He also said that it's no good just moaning about issues, you need to do something about it, like contacting the council, your local MP or organising a campaign to make people aware of the problem.
Now that we have contacted Mr Athwal and his team, we are hoping that he will continue to support and get involved with more things at our school.
Harleen
