This means that a Jew must strive for true freedom in all of the said three aspects of his daily life, and in such a way that not only would they not be in conflict with one another, but, on the contrary, one would supplement and complete the other. Only this kind of freedom may be called true freedom.

By the Grace of G-d 11th of Nissan, 5722 [April 15, 1962] Brooklyn, New York To my Brethren, Everywhere G-d bless you — Greeting and Blessing: The Festival of Pesach, the Season of our Liberation, being a part of Torah, “Torah” in the sense of instruction and guidance, teaches us the true concept of freedom.

Unlike other, often strange, interpretations of this concept, the Festival of Pesach reminds and teaches us that true freedom means total freedom; that is, full and complete freedom in all three aspects which constitute human life: (a) the realm of the soul, (b) the realm of the body, and (c) the surrounding world in which the individual lives — in each of the three

It is self-evident that the said harmonious and total freedom cannot be achieved in a way of life whereby the soul, which is truly a part of G-d (the Gdliness in man), would be subordinated to the body, and both of them (body and soul) to the (material) world. The superior cannot serve the inferior and be content to do so. The highest aspect of human life, the soul, will never acquiesce in subservience to the body.

The obvious conclusion, therefore, is that true freedom can be achieved only when the lower constituents of human life — the body and material environment — will be elevated to the highest possible, for them, degree of affinity, with the soul and its aspirations, while the soul, on its own level, will liberate itself from everything that hinders her fulfillment.

The enslavement in Egypt, and the subsequent liberation, reflect precisely the concept of freedom defined above: The enslavement was complete and total in all three aforementioned as-

pects of human life; (a) spiritual enslavement in, a d to, a country of the lowest moral depravity, for which reason Egypt was called the “abomination of the earth”; (b) extreme physical slavery of “hard labor”; (c) the fullest deprivation of their share of material world possessions to which they were entitled.

Jews at home only; when they go outside and go about their business (what should be their business) they feel no responsibility to elevate their share in the material world; they are slaves to the “Mitzraim” environment, for the Torah and Shulchan Aruch, their liberation from Mitzraim, is left behind, locked up at home.

Please enjoy our Jewish News Passover edition, it has a variety of articles as well as a Kids Magazine with Passover guides to help make your Passover experience more meaningful and filled with our beautiful traditions. If you need additional copies, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Locally, Our Chabad Center will be bringing the spirit of Passover to hundreds through multi-faceted array of outreach programs and activities. Our Model Matzah Bakery trips will host many local children and adults. The hands-on workshop allows each participant the opportunity to make their very own Matzah and learn the history of the Passover Exodus.

A special fund has been established to help families in need in Israel and here in Northwest CT, so that they too can feel the joy and warmth of the holiday. Community Seders and family placements are

being arranged by Chabad to make sure that every Jew has a home for the holidays. As the Passover Haggadah says “whoever is hungry, let them come in and eat”. On this very special night, NO JEW SHOULD BE LEFT BEHIND. On a global scale, the world-wide Chabad movement will be sending out representatives to some of the most remote places on earth to organize and conduct a Seder. Israeli students backpacking in the Himalayas will be joined by “chabadniks” for the Passover holiday. The same will be the case in Africa, the Far East, the South Pacific, Europe, and the Americas. Chabad will be there to make sure that this night is indeed different than all other nights.

PASSOVER GUIDE 2015 PASSOVER SCHEDULE

A MONTH BEFORE PASSOVER: 1. Begin learning about Passover and studying its laws.

2. Begin the house cleaning process. Methodically inspect and rid every part of your home of any traces of chametz. (Chametz is a general term for all food and drink made from wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt or their derivatives, which are for‑ bidden on Passover because it is leavened. Even a food that con‑ tains only a trace of chametz is prohibited and must be removed from our homes.) Be on the lookout for crumbs of all sorts, hidden stashes of crunchy chocolate, fermented drinks (nearly all are made with grain), etc. Make a list of all the rooms in your house, and cross off each one as you complete it.

Enforce the pre-Passover house rules: No food may leave the kitchen. After eating, clothes must be brushed off and hands thoroughly washed.

3. Set aside a special space or spaces to stash the chametz you will be selling for the duration of Passover. This can be a closet, a cabinet in the kitchen, or a room in the basement, as long as it can be locked and inaccessible to you for all of Passover.

4. Arrange for the selling of your chametz. Fill out a form and bring it to your Rabbi, delegating to him the task of selling your chametz before Passover. (You can also sell your chametz online.)

5. Buy the Passover essentials: purchase your Matzah and wine in advance, and store it in a place where it is absolutely safe from any contact with any chametz.

If you’re not making a Seder at home, your local ChabadLubavitch center has reserved a place for you!

A FEW DAYS BEFORE PASSOVER: 1. Begin work on making your kitchen “Kosher for Passover.” Put away all utensils that have been used year-round, and lock or seal those cabinets. Put away all nonkosher-forPassover food, and seal those cabinets. Once your kitchen is completely clean, do the special procedure to kosher your kitchen and appliances for Passover.

(Now that your kitchen is clean and all your non-kosher-for-Passover food put away, you will only be able to prepare and eat kosherfor-Passover foods there. If you’re not ready to start eating only kosher-for-Passover food yet, you can buy ready-prepared food and eat it outside of the house, or in a place that will be “sold” for the duration of Passover.)

2. Take stock of your Passover inventory. Take out any specialfor-Passover dishes or silver from where they are stored. Polish the silver. Make sure you have Haggadahs for the seder.

3. Do your Passover shopping. Buy the seder ingredients, plus general food for Passover.

Store these in your newly cleaned refrigerator and cabinets -- empty, of course, of any nonPassover food. You can now begin cooking for the holiday in your Kosher-forPassover kitchen.

4. Make sure that your holiday clothes and shoes are ready, ironed, and polished. Treat yourself to something new -- an outfit, shoes, or even just a tie.

THURSDAY NIGHT - 4/2/2015 (24 HOURS BEFORE PASSOVER): 1. Do the ritual search for Chametz. Take a candle, a spoon, and a feather, and search the house for any remaining or forgotten chametz. It is customary to put pieces of hard bread in

various places some time before the search, so that the one who searches will find them.

According to the Kabbalah, one should place 10 pieces. Before starting the search, the following blessing is recited: “Blessed are You, Lord, our G‑d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His com‑ mandments and commanded us concerning the removal of chametz.” One is to search by candlelight in all hidden places, even cracks in the floor.

FRIDAY MORNING - 4/3/2015: 1. If you are a first-born son, or the father of a first-born son under the age of Bar Mitzvah, participate in a Siyyum or other mitzvah feast, in order to be absolved of the “fast of the firstborn.”

2. The deadline for eating chametz is approximately two hours before midday. Past this point, no chametz is eaten until after the festival.

The deadline for getting rid of chametz is approximately one hour before midday; see page 7 for local times. (By this time, all cabinets and areas containing chametz that will be sold should be sealed.)

3. Burn any leftover Chametz that is not being sold, including anything that was found Sunday night at the Search for the Chametz. Recite the “nullification statement,” renouncing all ownership of any chametz that may still remain in your possession.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: 1. Prepare for the Seder. Ready the items for the Seder plate, set the table, and do last minute things for the Seder meal.

2. Recite the “Order of the Passover Offering,” recalling and reliving the Korban Pesach which was offered in the Holy Temple at this time.

3. Light the festival candles to

usher in the holiday. Light before sunset. Click here for a summary of the laws of Yom Tov.

FRIDAY NIGHT: 1. Go to the synagogue for the evening holiday services, which include the special addition of the Hallel prayer.

2. Hold the first Passover Seder.

Follow the 15 steps, recite the Haggadah, tell and relive the story of the Exodus, and enjoy the matzah, wine, and bitter herbs. Make sure to eat the Afikoman by midnight.

SHABBAT MORNING 4/4/2015: 1. Go to the synagogue for the Passover prayer services (which include a special prayer for dew) and Torah reading.

SHABBAT NIGHT: 1. The Omer Count begins tonight.

Outside the Holy Land, tonight begins a second day of Yom Tov (hallowed festival day) which is basically a repeat of the first. Light the festival candles from a preexisting flame (as it is forbidden to create a new flame on Yom Tov) after nightfall. The entire Seder is repeated tonight. (This time, however, there’s no midnight deadline; you can go on until morning.) The next day, is the second festival day; go to the synagogue for the special Passover prayers and Torah reading.

SUNDAY NIGHT 4/5/2015: 1. We’ve now entered the four “intermediate days” of Passover.

Perform the Havdalah ritual (sans incense and candle) marking the close of the first days of the holiday. Celebrate the intermediate days with matzah, kosher-for-Passover cooking, family trips (in the newly cleaned car), and more retelling of the Exodus story. It’s still Passover, so we don’t eat, own, or derive enjoyment from Chametz, Continued on page 10

Since there are many legal intricacies in this sale, only a competent rabbi should be entrusted with its execution. The rabbi acts as our agent both to sell the chametz to the non-Jew on the morning before Pesach and also to buy it back the evening after Pesach.

(Northwest CT) This year celebrate Passover with family and friends at the 19th annual community Seder at the Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Rd.in Litchfield.

Passover is the festival, which commemorates the liberation of the Jews from Egypt. Every year, on the first two nights of the Passover holiday (which lasts for eight days), it is customary to conduct a “Seder”.

The Seder is a festive event.

Rabbi Joseph Eisenbach will direct the Seder reading from and expounding upon the “Haggadah” - the book that tells the tale of the exodus of the Jews from Egypt.

There will be spirited singing and a gala five course holiday meal will be served.

“Matzah” is the traditional wafer eaten by Jews during Passover symbolic of the bread which had no time to rise as the Jews hurried to leave Egypt 2,000 years ago.

Handmade Matzahs will be enjoyed by all present at the Seder. All participants are guaranteed to have a most inspiring evening.

The Israelites in Egypt prepared the Passover‑lamb on the tenth of Nissan (Exodus 12:3), which was the Shabbat preceding the exodus (on the fifteenth).

When questioned by their neighbors, they explained that these lambs would be sacrificed on the fourteenth of Nissan, and the night thereafter G‑d would slay the firstborn of Egypt.

The firstborn of Egypt then approached their parents and Pharaoh, begging for the re‑ lease of Israel so that they them‑ selves would be spared.

When this request was denied, they rose in armed revolt, which resulted in the slaying of numerous enemies of Israel.

On Shabbat Hagadol, after Minchah, we recite a portion of the Haggadah from “We were slaves” until “to atone for all our sins”; for that day marks the be‑ ginning of the redemption and its miracles.

MEANINGFUL TIDBITS

The Shabbat preceding Passover is called Shabbat Hagadol (the Great Shabbat), because of the great miracle that occurred that day.

PREPARING FOR PASSOVER

There is a custom to stay awake the night of the Splitting of the Sea and study Torah through the night.

Unique to Passover is the eating of Matzah, and the stringent prohibition of eating or possessing chametz for the entire eight days of the holiday.

Chametz is a general term for all food and drink made from wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt or their derivatives, which are for‑ bidden on Passover because it is leavened.

Even a food that contains only a trace of chametz is prohibited and must be re‑ moved from our homes.

Note: Matzah used all year round is not for Passover use. Only matzahs baked especially for Passover may be used on Passover.

GETTING RID OF CHAMETZ Obvious chametz, both food and utensils used throughout the year (and not koshered for Passover) should be stored in closets or rooms which are not easily accessible (locked or taped shut). The chametz should be sold to a non‑Jew through a Rabbi. See page 8 to sell your chametz. (Note: After Passover ends, wait one hour before eating chametz to allow time for the Rabbi to buy it back for you.)

Clean the entire house thoroughly to remove all crumbs and small pieces of food. Also check for chametz in the car and office (desks

and drawers, etc.), clothing pockets (especially the children’s), pocket‑ books, briefcases and attached cases. Vacuum cleaner bags should be discarded or cleaned thoroughly.

PREPARING THE KITCHEN DISHES AND UTENSILS: It is best to have special sets of dishes, silverware, pots, pans and other utensils for Passover use only.

If necessary, certain year‑round utensils may be used on Passover if they are ‘koshered’ before Passover. Consult a Rabbi for more information.

Stove: Thoroughly clean and scour every part of the stove. Heat the oven to the highest temperature possible for 1‑2 hours. Heat the grates and the iron parts of the stove (and elements if electric) until they are red‑hot. It is suggested that the oven and the stove top should be covered with aluminum foil afterwards.

Microwave Ovens: Clean the oven thoroughly. Fill a completely clean container that was not used for 24 hours, with water. Turn on the microwave and let it steam heavily.

Turn it off and wipe out the inside.

other Passover items, locking them away until next year. Then you can once again enjoy chametz food and drinks, and feast on pizza, bread, beer -- anything kosher. (Just make sure it’s not chametz that was in the possession of a Jew during Passover.) But as you do, don’t forget the eight days of freedom you’ve just experienced, and remember that throughout the year, as you enjoy all your leavened food, you still carry a bit of the Matzah spirit with you!

To use the microwave during Passover, use a flat piece of styrofoam of any other thick object as a separation between the bot‑ tom of the oven and the cooking dish. When cooking, the food should be covered on all sides.

Sink: Meticulously clean the sink.

For 24 hours before koshering it, do not pour hot water from chametz pots into it. Afterwards, boil water in a clean pot which was not used for 24 hours, and pour it three times onto every part of the sink, including the drain stopper. After‑ wards line the sink.

Refrigerator, Freezer, Cup‑ boards, Closets, Tables and Counters: Thoroughly clean and scrub them to remove any crumbs and residue.

After‑ wards, cover those surfaces that come into contact with hot food or utensils with a heavy covering.

Tablecloths and Napkins: Launder without starch.

Cars, Garages etc.: Vacuum your car or van; thoroughly clean your basement, garage or any property you own. Special care should be taken with items you will be using, or rooms you will be accessing during Passover.

While shopping for Passover we must be careful that the foods we buy are not only kosher but are also kosher‑for‑Passover‑ that is, chametz‑free.

According to the Kabbalah, one should place 10 pieces.

STARTING “FROM SCRATCH” All fruits and vegetables as well as all kosher cuts of meat and kosher fish are kosher for Passover, provided they have been prepared in accordance with Jewish law and have not come into contact with chametz or chametz utensils.

The prevailing custom is that on Passover we do not eat rice, mil‑ let, corn, mustard, legumes (beans, etc.) or food made from one of them.

COMMERCIALLY PREPARED PRODUCTS Today, there are many kosher‑ for‑Passover packaged foods available. However, care must be used to purchase only those packaged foods that have reliable Rabbinical supervision which is valid for Passover.

Obviously, all leavened foods made from wheat, barley, rye, oats or spelt are actual chametz and are prohibited on Passover. Examples are bread, cake, cereal, spaghetti, beer and whiskey.

CHECK THAT MEDICINE CABINET! Many medicines, sprays and cosmetics contain chametz. Consult a competent Rabbi as to which ones may be used on Passover. The same applies to pet food.

SEARCH AND REMOVAL OF CHAMETZ On Thursday evening, April 3 make a formal search of the home and all its surrounding properties while holding a lit candle.

It is customary to put pieces of hard bread in various places some time before the search, so that the

Before starting the search, the following blessing is recited: “Blessed are You, Lord, our G‑d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us concerning the removal of chametz.”

One is to search by candlelight in all hidden places, even cracks in the floor.

One is not to speak between the blessing and the beginning of the search, even concerning the search itself.

Throughout the search one should not speak about anything that is not relevant to the search.

Members of the household should stand nearby to hear the blessing, with each one then searching his own place without speaking in between.

Take heed to search first in the room nearest the place where the blessing was heard, and not to go to another room immediately after the blessing.

After the search one must be careful that the chametz retained to be eaten or to be burnt in the morning, be put in a safe place, so that it not be carried about and thereby crumbled and spread by children or rodents.

After the search one must also nullify [the chametz he may have over‑ looked] and say: “All leaven and anything leavened that is in my possession, which I have neither seen nor removed, and about which I am unaware, shall be considered nullified and ownerless as the dust of the earth.” n Friday, April 3, in the fifth hour of the day, one should make a special fire and burn the chametz and nullify it.

For the nullification of the chametz say: “All leaven and anything leavened that is in my possession, whether I

have seen it or not, whether I have observed it or not, whether I have removed it or not, shall be considered nullified and ownerless as the dust of the earth.”

The ten pieces are to be burnt, and the following is said during the burning of the chametz: “May it be your will, Lord, our G‑d and G‑d of our fathers, that just as I remove the chametz from my house and from my possession, so shall you remove all the extraneous forces.

Remove the spirit of impurity from the earth, remove our evil inclination from us, and grant us a heart of flesh to serve you in truth. Make all the sitra achara, all the kelipot, and all wickedness be consumed in smoke, and remove the dominion of evil from the earth. Re‑ move with a spirit of destruction and a spirit of judgment all that dis‑ tress the Shechina, just as you destroyed Egypt and its idols in those days, at this time. Amen, Selah.”

FAST OF THE FIRST BORN When the Almighty slew the first‑ born of Egypt, He spared the first‑ born of the Children of Israel.

Therefore, all firstborn men and women or the fathers of boys under 13 and girls under 12, fast on the day before Passover, in gratitude to the Almighty.

It has been a custom for many centuries that this fast day is broken by a festive meal in celebration of the conclusion of the study of a book of the Talmud. This usually takes place in the Synagogue.

PREPARING FOR THE SEDER The primary mitzvot (obligations) of the Seder are:

PREPARING THE SEDER PLATE Three Matzot are placed on top of each other on a plate or napkin and then covered. The Matzot are symbolic of the three casts of Jews: Priests, Levites and Israelites. They also commemorate the three measures of fine flour that Abraham told Sarah to bake into Matzah when they were visited by the three an‑ gels. n a practical level, three Matzot are needed so that when we break the middle Matzah, we are still left with two whole ones to pronounce the Hamotzi (as required on Shabbat and Holidays).

On a cloth or plate placed above the three Matzot we place the following items:

THE SHANKBONE ‑ ZEROAH Remove most of the meat from a chicken neck and roast it on all sides. It is symbolic of the Paschal sacrifice that was offered in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem on the afternoon be‑ fore Pesach.

THE EGG ‑ BEITZAH This is symbolic of the Festival Sacrifice (Chagigah) brought in the Holy Temple.

THE BITTER HERBS ‑ MARROR This symbolizes the bitter suffering of the Jews in Egypt.

THE MIXTURE ‑ CHAROSET A mixture of chopped apples, walnuts and red wine, charoset resembles mortar which reminds us of the mortar that was used by the Israelites to make bricks when they were slaves in Egypt.

FreedoMan himself will lead model matzah bakeries, appear at Hebrew schools, and wherever else Chabad Houses will be offering Passover programming. As the challenge progresses, children will head out to supermarkets armed with a colorful shopping list, where they will be joined by FreedoMan, who will help them do their Passover shopping.

On Facebook and Twitter, FreedoMan will also be actively tweeting, posting, and tagging, encouraging participating children to learn more and get involved.

“We wanted the Freedom Challenge to be relevant, so what FreedoMan does is help children to understand that today we’re each battling our own Pharaoh,” Eisenbach adds. “Everybody has their own boundaries that they need to break through, FreedoMan and the Freedom Challenge addresses that head-on.”

4. MYTH: Chabad does not accept converts.

FACT: Chabad follows traditional Jewish Law which states that any non-Jew who feels sincerely convinced of the beauty and relevance of Torah; who is prepared to follow Jewish tradition and wishes to join the community of Israel, is welcomed as a convert. The conversion process requires immersion in a kosher Mikvah, circumcision for men, and – of course – acceptance of the disciplines and practices of Judaism - all under the guidance of a qualified rabbi.

5. MYTH: Women occupy a secondary

position in Chabad philosophy.

FACT: Different, yes. Secondary? No! The high standing of women in Chabad is central to the survival of our faith. As the cornerstone of family life, the woman can attain a profound and meaningful spirituality, one that fulfils her deepest needs and aspirations opening fresh perspectives on self-understanding, growth and Torah knowledge. Ignorance, misconceptions, and outright myths about Jewish women have prevailed until very recently, turning many people away from an appreciation of Torah and a traditional Jewish lifestyle.

Chabad is working to correct those misconceptions.

6. MYTH: Chabad does not support the state of Israel.

FACT: Chabad, and the Lubavitcher Rebbe in particular, strongly support Israel and is deeply involved in defending its value and right - or more appropriately, its obligation - to exist.

Many Chabadnicks serve in the IDF and others contribute practical and spiritual support to the troops. Chabad has over 150 centers in Israel, as well as dozens of educational facilities around the country. Lubavitch trained Rabbis often complete their training in Israeli Yeshivot.

7. MYTH: Chabad is financed by headquarters in New York.

2. Kaddish and prayer. On the Jewish calendar, the day begins at nightfall of the previous evening and ends at nightfall.

During this 24 hour period, Kaddish is recited by the children of the deceased (or by whoever is observing the yahrtzeit) in the three daily services--evening, morning and afternoon. If possible, the one observing the yahrtzeit should also lead the prayer service.

3. Learning and charity. Torah should be studied in the merit of the soul; a timehonored custom is to study Mishnah (the compilation of Torah law that forms the crux of the Talmud), the word mishnah having the same Hebrew letters as neshamah, “soul.” Extra charity should be given on the yahrtzeit for the merit of the soul’s elevation.

4. Kiddush and l’chaim. It is customary to serve a kiddush in the synagogue on the Shabbat preceding the yahrtzeit and a small repast on the day of the yahrtzeit itself. The saying of the blessing L’chaim (“To Life!”) and saying words of Torah on these occasions is considered to be of particular merit to the soul.

V. VISITING THE GRAVESITE 1. It is customary to visit the graves of loved ones around the time of their Yahrtzeit as well as each year before the High Holidays.

The premise this custom is based on is two-fold: There is always a trace of the soul present at the body’s resting place. Just as the site of the Temple in Jerusalem remains holy, as “holiness never goes away” so, too, the repository of the soul retains a trace of the soul’s holiness. Hence we are in contact with the presence of our loved one--which inspires our prayers to G-d we offer at the grave site.

The Chabad‑Lubavitch movement is expecting more than one million people to visit the site during the week before Passover and during the intermediate days of Passover. (According to Jewish law one may not use electronic devices during the first two and last two days of the eight‑day holiday and the Sabbath.)

Passover, beginning this year on the eve of Monday night, April 14, until after nightfall on April 22, recalls the Jewish People’s miraculous redemption by G‑d from Egyptian slavery 3,320 years ago.

Directed by G‑d to leave hastily, the nation of a few million could not even wait for their dough to rise and ate unleavened bread. To commemorate this miraculous exodus, Jews abstain from eating ‑‑ or even owning or benefiting from ‑‑ any leavened substance during the eight days of Passover (and a part of the day preceding it). On the first two nights (in Israel: only the first night) of the holiday a Seder (literally: Order) is held to commemorate the liberation from Egypt and the celebration of the Paschal sacrifice offered and eaten in the times of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

Seder requirements include eating

herbs (to recall the pain of the Egyptian enslavement), and recounting the exodus story.

A Seder In Dakar Rabbi Yosef Wineberg served as a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary for the sixth Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, of righteous memory, and the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory.

Rabbi Wineberg undertook missions to South Africa, Brazil, and other countries, reaching out to Jews and inspiring identity and observance.

In the early 1950s, Rabbi Wineberg went for a private audience with the Rebbe prior to traveling to South Africa. At the audience, the Rebbe asked him: “Do you stop in any other countries on your way to South Africa?”

Rabbi Wineberg told him that the plane made occasional stops for refueling, but these were for brief intervals. To this the Rebbe replied: “Do you not stay in any place for a day or two?” Rabbi Wineberg answered him that this was not the plan. Toward the end of the audience, the Rebbe again asked Rabbi Wineberg if he was planning to stop in any other countries on the way.

Rabbi Wineberg had been working with the Rebbe long enough to appreciate that this was not ordinary curiosity.

When he came home, he told his wife that although he was scheduled to arrive in South Africa on Wednesday, she should not be disappointed if a telegram does not arrive before Shabbat, for from the Rebbe’s words, it appeared that he would be delayed for a day or two and would not necessarily have the opportunity of communicating before Shabbat

As Rabbi Wineberg prepared to board the plane, he noticed that one of his acquaintances, Rabbi Lenger (of Ganeles-Lenger wines) was also planning to board the flight. They both appreciated the advantage of having each other as company on the long journey.

“Yes,” Mr. Pinto answered. He did have tefillin, but unfortunately, he had fallen out of the habit of putting them on each day.

One of the refueling stops for the journey to South Africa was Dakar, a small country on the West African coast. As they were preparing to deplane there, the crew announced that the stay would be prolonged slightly because they were experiencing certain technical difficulties.

They deplaned at 10 PM. As Rabbi Wineberg was sitting in the lobby, he noticed a young man looking at him intently.

When Rabbi Wineberg took off his hat and revealed a skull-cap, kippah, the man approached him and introduced himself as Mr. Pinto, a Sephardic Jew from Egypt. He had been in Dakar for six months and hadn’t seen a Jewish face.

He missed the Jewish involvement which he had experienced at home, and he was worried about the effect living in such a Jewish wasteland would have on his children.

Rabbi Wineberg explained to him that he could maintain a stronger sense of Jewish identity by intensifying his Jewish observance. “Do you have tefillin here?” Rabbi Wineberg asked him, of the small black leather boxes containing scrolls of biblical passages that are wrapped on the arm and head of adult men during week-

“When your children see you putting on tefillin daily,” Rabbi Wineberg told him, “the concept of being Jewish will mean much more to them. They will have a tangible example of what being Jewish means.”

Mr. Pinto promised to put on tefillin daily. He and Rabbi Wineberg talked for a few more minutes, and then Rabbi Wineberg was called back to his plane. Rabbi Wineberg felt that perhaps his conversation with Mr. Pinto was the reason for the delay and with that he would have fulfilled whatever intent the Rebbe had in mind when speaking about a stop on the way to South Africa.

Apparently, this was not the case. After a few hours of flying, the crew announced that they were experiencing engine trouble and would have to return to Dakar. After they deplaned, the passengers were informed that one of the plane’s engines had burnt out and it would be two or three days before it could be replaced.

Rabbi Wineberg’s companion, Mr. Lenger, was worried. It was already past midnight Wednesday morning. If the delay was more than two days, it would be questionable whether they would arrive before Shabbat.

Rabbi Wineberg calmed him; the Rebbe had spoken to him about a delay for a day or two, no longer.

After being placed in a local

hotel and resting for several hours, Rabbi Wineberg set out to look for Jews. That was not an easy task in Dakar, for there were few in the country.

Many of the people had not even heard what a Jew was.

He was able, however, to locate a store whose owner was reputed to be Jewish. Rabbi Wineberg entered the store and asked for the owner. He was introduced to a young man named Clement. Was he the owner of the store?

No, he was the owner’s nephew.

Was he Jewish?

Yes, he was.

Clement talked freely with Rabbi Wineberg. He came from Lebanon. He felt the financial opportunities open for him in Dakar were worth undertaking the difficulties of leaving home and a familiar environment.

He and his uncle know of four other Jewish families.

Rabbi Wineberg spoke to him about Jewish involvement and practice. Clement acknowledged that he had been lax in this area.

“Do you have tefillin here?”

Rabbi Wineberg asked.

Clement admitted that he had left his in Lebanon.

“Would you put on tefillin if I sent them to you?”

Clement promised that he would.

They talked for a while longer, and Rabbi Wineberg sensed a genuine warmth on Clement’s part.
