Chabad of Arizona CELEBRATING THIRTY NINE YEARS IN THE STATE OF ARIZONA

Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries, Rabbi Zalman and Tzipi, arrived in Arizona 39 years ago, welcoming travelers and guest to their home, and making Jewish resources available to their growing community.

Today, 25 families and 21 Chabad Centers work around the clock serving the needs of the Jewish community. Between them, they offer among their services everything from crisis relief to Hebrew school and Bar Mitzvah classes, Shabbat dinners, adult education classes as well as programs for seniors, preschool, teens, summer camp, young professionals and children with special needs.

This year marks a special year on the Jewish calendar - “Hakhel” year. Once every 7 years all the Jewish people would gather in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and the king would read select passages of the Torah; almost like a reenactment of Mount Sinai. This served, primarily, two purposes: one, to strengthen our commitment to G-d and the Torah and two, to unite all Jews.

The Chabad Rabbis’ collective efforts and the vital role of the lay leaders accomplish these two goals, Jewish unity and Jewish commitment.

A typical Shabbat dinner at a local Chabad will find you celebrating Shabbat with many others. Natives and tourists get the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat the way Shabbat is meant to be celebrated. And if it’s your birthday that week, they might even have a birthday cake waiting for you!

Mr. Greg Saltz Honoree

Greg Saltz resides in Phoenix and is originally from Cleveland Ohio. He is the youngest of three children. He moved to Arizona in 1997 with his parents Lenny and Miranda Saltz when he was a senior in High School. He graduated from Desert Mountain High School and attended the University of Arizona.

After graduation he started his career in commercial real estate. Greg has worked for retail brokerage companies such as RBI, De Rito Partners, Inc. and Phoenix Commercial Advisors before starting GPS Retail Advisors in 2014.

Greg specializes in landlord and tenant representation and represents retailers such as Pet Club, Natural Grocers, KFC and Moe’s Southwest Grill.

He has quickly become one of the most prominent retail brokers in Phoenix.

In his spare time Greg enjoys community involvement and is a member of the Young Jewish Funders, a local philanthropic group of Jewish men who support various Jewish organizations throughout the Phoenix Community including Smile on Seniors, PJ Library, Moshe House, Jews with special needs and Valley Beit Midrash. Greg enjoys hiking, road biking and traveling in his free time. Most of his family resides in Israel and his sister Charlene lives in Phoenix as well.

Rabbi Harris & Debbie Cooperman Jewish Education Award

Harris Cooperman originally from Brooklyn, New York, has been a fixture in Phoenix, Arizona since 1984. He is the principal of the Phoenix Hebrew Academy and is also the Director of Development for the past thirty two years.

A master educator, Rabbi Cooperman has decades of experience teaching classes and shiurim not only to Phoenix Hebrew Academy students,but also to adults of various backrounds.

Rabbi Cooperman is a faculty member of the Jewish Enrichment Center, which is the outreach branch of the Beth Joseph Congregation. For the past eight years, he has been teaching a biweekly Gemorah shiur.

Together with his Eshes Chayil, Debbie, the Coopermans have raised ‫ בע”ה‬four children - Akiva, Jonathan, Dena and Hillel. They are all active participants in all areas of Jewish life in the various communities around the United States in which they reside.

Dr. Yaakov Khaydatov Rofeh Yedid Award

Dr. Yakov Khaydatov is originally from the former Soviet Union. He immigrated to Phoenix in 1991, and has called Phoenix his home from the beginning. He attended the Phoenix Hebrew Academy, then graduated from Washington High School in 1999. He received his bachelors of science from ASU in 2003 with a psychology degree. In 2005, he was fortunate to get accepted to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts where he received a doctorate of dental medicine.

Yakov has been in practice for 6 years and is now a partner at the practice where he started as a dental assistant, in 1997.

Yakov enjoys basketball, hiking, soccer and spending as much time as possible with his young family, his wife Svetlana and daughter Zoe.

Mrs. Tzvia Halilyan Eishet Chayil Award

Mrs. Tzvia Halilyan moved to Phoenix in 1999, from Israel. She has become a pillar to the Phoenix community ever since. Tzvia moved here with her husband Dror and their two daughters.

Tzvia is constantly volunteering and helping those in need. Recently the halilyans have become foster parents to two young children. They have become advocates for placing Jewish foster children in Jewish homes.

Shortly after moving here, Tzvia began her career in Jewish education. She is a passionate teacher and loved by all her students! She teaches preschool and Hebrew High as well as private Hebrew lessons.

Tzvia is also an expert chef, and is always offering her services, and volunteering in the Chabad kitchen.

Tzvia heads the Tomchei Shabbat Phoenix division. Tomchei Shabbat distributes weekly boxes of food to families in need. Tzvia and her crew fundraise, purchase the food and pack the boxes every week.

Tzvia also serves as a volunteer for the local Chevra Kaddisha- Jewish burial society, when needed.

Tzvia and Dror are lucky to have their children nearby and are the proud grandparents of Levi, Raphael and Devorah Leah.
