Mr. Zalman Segal Honoree

Mr. Zalman Segal was born in Israel (then Palestine). At the age of ten and a half years old his family moved to the United States to the city of Chicago.

Growing up Zalman attended yeshiva in Baltimore, Maryland. After his studies he moved back to Chicago and became a shochet for a kosher slaughterhouse.

From Chicago, Mr. Zalman Segal and his late wife of 62 years, Pearl, moved to Arizona.

After arriving in Phoenix, Zalman was offered an opportunity to purchase an existing kosher butcher shop. He purchased it and proceeded to build it up into a full kosher market and restaurant. The store started on 16th street and Thomas and later moved to 7th street and Camelback. Segal’s, Zalman’s kosher market and butcher shop, was the first kosher restaurant in town. At that time there was one other kosher butcher in town.

For over 40 years, Zalman was the owner of Segal’s Kosher Foods until he sold it about ten years ago. Segal’s is still open at the same location on 7th Street.

Before Rabbi Levertov moved to Phoenix to open the Chabad centers in Arizona, he came to visit the state with Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky. During their visit they stopped at Segal’s kosher store and butcher! Mr. Segal and Rabbi Levertov started talking and they have been friends ever since!

Zalman and his wife Pearl raised their 5 children in Phoenix. All of their children attended the Phoenix Hebrew Academy.

They have 4 girls (Debbie, Lee, Sharon and Rena) and one son (David). Zalman’s son David Segal together with his wife and Zalman’s daughter Debbie Cooperman together with her husband Rabbi Harris Cooperman continued living in Arizona and raised their families here.

Mr. Segal has continued to be a shochet here in Phoenix and has even shechted for Kapores at Chabad.

Zalman is enjoying his retirement and travels to visit his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren!

Drs. Barry and Chiky Goldberg Honoree

Dr. Howard Barry Goldberg D.C., (N.M.D.) M.S., APCNM, DACBN, DCBCN, DAAPM, studied at the University of the State of New York, the University of Bridgeport, Columbia Institute of Chiropractic and the American University of Integrative Medicine.

Dr. Goldberg has been practicing for close to forty years. Eight years in Connecticut and twenty eight in Arizona.

Dr. Goldberg had specialized training in various natural healing methods, has received a number of prestigious awards and diplomas from numerous schools and boards and is licensed to practice in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, New Mexico and Virginia.

Barry had specialized training at the Sacro-Occipital Technique Research Society, the International Craniopathic Society, the International Systemic Health Organization, the Parker Chiropractic Research Foundation , the International College of Applied Kinesiology and the Advanced Proficiency New Mexico.

Dr. Goldberg has received a diploma from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, American Clinical Board of Nutritionists, Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutritionists, Soft Tissue Orthopedics and the American Academy of Pain Management. He is also as a certified Craniopath and instructor and in the SacroOccipital Technique and an instructor.

Dr. Goldberg has traveled all over the world and lectured in Israel, Japan, Australia, England, France, Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda and throughout the the United States.

Dr. Goldberg has been a part of the Chabad community for decades! He is always available to help everyone that needs his services.

In November of 1993 Dr. Goldberg met Chiky in Israel at an international alternative healing conference. Chiky holds a PhD in clinical psychology and works at a private practice.

Barry and Chiky married in March of 1994 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The following April on the first day of Passover their daughter Maya was born in Jerusalem. After going to school in Tel Aviv for 8 years, Maya came back to Arizona, graduated from Arcadia High School and three years later graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and is now pursuing a film career.

Michael & Judith Bernstein Honoree

Michael was born and raised in England and lived in North London through many of the tragic events ofWorld War II. The London Synagogue where he had his Bar Mitzvah is now a mosque. He graduated from the Royal College of Science in London, of which he is an Associate. He came to the United States in 1957 and studied at Yale and Columbia. While he was in New York he met his bride-to-be Judy at a 92nd St ‘Y’ summer camp.

Michael worked in technology marketing for several companies in New York and Arizona including IBM and Intel. When he retired he became a docent at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and then at the Phoenix Art Museum. He has also given lectures on the history of the Mayo Clinic at their Scottsdale campus.

Judy is a native New Yorker who was born in Manhattan. She studied Food Science and Nutrition at Adelphi University in Garden City and at UC Davis where she became a certified canning specialist.

She has worked in New York and Arizona for various food oriented companies including General Foods and Dial Corporation. She became a Domestic Science teacher when she came to Arizona and has taught in the Scottsdale School District.

Michael and Judy have two children- Susan, a psychologist, and Jason, an attorney. After living through a dreadful snow storm in Long Island in 1970 they all moved to Scottsdale in 1971. Michael and Judy have known Rabbi Levertov since he came to Arizona in 1977, and have watched with joy and pleasure as Chabad has grown in the Valley of the Sun and far beyond.

Loren & Barbara Greenberg Honoree

Loren and Barbara have been involved with Chabad for over 10 years. Loren is originally from Duluth, Minnesota and Barbara originally from Chicago, Illinois. Loren, a graduate from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, became a certified public accountant and Barbara a graduate from Arizona State University became a teacher.

They met in Los Angeles before moving to Phoenix in 1968. Loren met Barbara at a Passover Seder at the home of her uncle, Phil Gordon, who was executive director of the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles.

Loren enjoys “numbers” and at age 78 continues to work as a CPA. Barbara says working keeps Loren young; Loren says Barbara’s attention to details and care has kept him young. Barbara retired in order to raise and enjoy their two daughters.

Teaching part time at Congregation Beth Israel and at Beth El Congregation.

Loren is presently treasurer of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Prescott, a board member and past treasurer of the Groom Creek Water Users Association and past president of Jewish Family & Children’s Service, as well as past president of a Sun City Lions Civic Organization, past treasurer of the Sun City Lions Foundation, past treasurer of the Rotary Foundation of Sun City West and past treasurer of Beth El Congregation.

Barbara has worn many hats including having a real estate license, co-owner of a monograming business and of course a teacher in public school as well as preschool. Barbara was president of the oldest Jewish womens organization in the United States, UOTS, which raised millions of dollars for cancer service projects, established Camp Rainbow, a camp for children with cancer, and began the Back to School clothing drive which was eventually taken over by the City of Phoenix. Barbara is a past president of the PTO at the Phoenix Hebrew Academy, co-originator of a chapter of Phoenix Friends of Shaare Zedek Hospital, is a

member of ORT, a past board member of ASU Hillel and of Jewish National Fund and a life member of both Emunah and Hadassah.

Barbara stated that their proudest accomplishment has been raising two lovely daughters who are well educated, responsible citizens who understand compassion and tzedakah. They have been blessed with two sons-in-law and four grandchildren, each with a boy and a girl. Their older daughter, Audrey Levine has a business degree from ASU and a masters degree in Jewish education from the University of Judaism. Her husband, Steven is a graduate from UCLA and is a partner with Latham & Watkins in San Diego. They have a 20 year old daughter and a 16 year old son. Barbara and Loren’s younger daughter, Cynthia Mellinger, is a graduate of the University of Arizona and owns a national notary business specializing in real estate which operates out of Sonoma, California. Her husband, Eric, has a degree in engineering from University of California, Berkley and works with his father in his engineering company. They have a 9 year old son and a 5 year old daughter.

In their spare time they enjoy grandchildren in California and have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to run the rapids in the Grand Canyon as well as hike the Canyon North rim to South rim. They have been able to walk the Great Wall in China, see the palaces in Russia, climbed Machu Picchu and experienced a Safari in South Africa. Their favorite travels have been to Israel on numerous occasions.

They also enjoy reading and Barbara enjoys studying weekly with a mentor .

Loren and Barbara have stated that knowing the Levertov family has added a wonderful family and religious experience to their lives. Over the years they have been supportive of Chabad of Flagstaff and Chabad of Prescott in addition to Chabad in Phoenix.
