Our main analysis revolves around how people per form activities to make themselves at ease, thus domesticating a public domain, such as sleeping, eating, reading or watching a movie on their phone or listening to music. We focused on how these routine travelers showed insurgence by ‘personalizing’ a public space. There exists a stark dif ference between people, but, by the end of the day, all of them come down to the same trait of doing what gives them comfor t.

This is what we have tried to focus on, showing the dif ferent ways people made a public place their home, showing an insurgent trait of being private in a public space.

We divided our analysis in two main groups. In the first one we highlight those actions that “pop up” in a certain point of the journey to then disappear without a trace, such as, a woman weaving flowers, a man sitting on the middle of the station, women combing, a girl reading a book or a pen seller. While in the second one we stablish reiterative actions that have a physical influence on its surroundings; people taking out their shoes, the outer wall of the train or people leaning out of the car doors.

The local trains in Mumbai are famous for it’s staggering number of passengers. But what happens when the af ternoon sets in? These are the ‘ vacant hours’. A af ternoon time when the train is used less than half the capacity. Due to space available in these hours, people use the provided framework of travelling to sustain many insurgent activities. We have tried to document such eight activites - conversing, eating, praying, obser ving, lounging indictae signs of a thriving public realm.We have looked at them as dif ferent instances of how people loiter, linger and organically create a rich fabric of public life in a compar tment shuttling between two points of the city.

The local trains in Mumbai reflect its demographic issues- they must accommodate the nine to five routine of the people which is an integral par t of the city.

These are the ‘rush hours’: A range of four to five hours in the morning and the evening of the day. The train compar tment is known to be used twice than its capacity. People v ying for a place to stand on, squeeze themselves around the interior infrastructure available inside. While basic needs of ventilation and comfor t are threatened, hierarchies and tactics for occupying space emerge.

These result into unspoken protocol and methods of sustenance in the local train - a set of postures and movements that are possible in this time. The study documents eight such movements and tactics , how micro – spatial zones are formed within the compar tment and the role of the interior infrastructure in it.

Packed and bustling with people, the local train has a life of its own. In our exploration of a day ’s journey of a local train, we obser ved that ever y hour experienced dif ference. The mornings were filled with people rushing to their

The analysis of insurgent activities star ted with the inquest of exploring dif ferent activities from CST Station till Titwala Station in local trains(Mumbai centralline)where we found mumbaikars disobediently using the public spaces. Within the Exploration of this activities like people using poles to sit or to hang their belongings even if they can see the caution board right behind them, people seating on the platform swaying their legs towards tracks, men seating right at the opening gates of local train disturbing mobility of people, mothers using the police seating module to rest with their babies amongst all of these the most interesting one was the fish potter illegally reaches to another station via trains & tracks.

Being densely populated and lack of space, using ever y inch of space wisely whether to live or to carr y vending activities becomes character of ‘Mumbai’ and is not only found along roads/gardens, footpaths but also found in the local trains of Mumbai. This case shows especially women compar tment in slow local trains shows the character of vending activities where ‘male’ vendors selling small household things, ladies’ accessories etc. capturing women customers. Lack of time and space generates potential of train compar tment being place of vending and vendors accommodate themselves comfor tably.

Selling at a local train of Mumbai can be financially and emotionally rewarding experience for both the buyers and sellers. According to the laws if any unauthorized vendor sneaks into the railway premises, they would be arrested and fined.

Devoid of the existing congestion, the insurgent sitting activities of people, adds fuel to the ongoing problems of the local train stations. The visual and physical obstruction that these ‘sitting’ in restricted areas, demand a higher risk for the movement of people over these public spaces. The risk factors involved in ‘The world’s busiest station- Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus’ can be empowered with the provision of exclusive abundant seating spaces in fur ther planning of this local station.

This ‘aamchi local’ station is a traversing point for lakhs of citizens daily. The station spor ts infrastructure to deem it suitable for commuting, but it lacks urban furniture to call it an acceptable public space. It is amazing to see how the common man pauses in his hectic life and occupies space in this landmark to consider it his own. Through the course of the day one would notice a mere train booking/commuting platform turn into urban resting spot. The catalysts to this process are the canteens, the loo, the fan- to last through the heat and most impor tantly, wifiall in sight of the train schedule indicator which remind these urban settlers, its time to move.

Being one of the most populous cities in the world the urbanization utilizes ever y inch of space in Mumbai where small informal gathering of vendors on stairs of subway near CSMT (Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) station is no exception. Thus on one hand impor tance of place, huge number of commuters generate potential for economic activity centers and on the other hand lack of the land and infrastructure, need of daily expenses, unaf fordability lead to insurgencies in the form of unauthorized vending activities.

We saw the varied reactions of people to the same idea of domestication but in a dif ferent, independent environment in terms of its spatial qualities.

They had unique ways of reacting towards the public space provided to them, by personalizing various niches and corners to somehow accommodate their lifestyle into a public space, for example, initiating a religious establishment under the bridge.

It was interesting to see how people of multiple age groups came together and personalized a space that changes throughout the day, thus, the act of insurgency being coexistent.

The Market is one of the most representative spaces in the cities, the transactions in these spaces make possible to exchange not just products and services but also ideas and believes.

For any person traveling by Indian Railways, or for any Bollywood movie fanatic, is term “Coolie” isn’t unheard of. For years, we’ve seen the men in red shir ts and white pants, moving about the railway stations, dashing for ever y train that comes along, to reach the passengers and of fer their ser vices to carr y the luggage. They ’d carr y the heav y luggage on their heads, hold them with hands, and cover the distance between the platform and the cab ser vices, gaining a small fee for the help, sustaining them for the day.Coolies have formed the integral par t of the journey by Indian Rails. For our study of the insurgent public spaces, at the CSMT station, we obser ved the coolies as they occupy the space of the railway station for their activities throughout the day.

The analysis of insurgent activities on & outside the Dadar station , lots of insurgent activities takes place in terms of public seating ,vendors illegally using the public space to sell their items and store the items , out of them the most interesting one was how the electric box junction can be used in varied ways by the local people for their independent activities.

As of on the footpath which is totally made for the public use & next to it there is the main road while on other side are the busy shops ; because of this independent activities around the electric junction box which are on the footpath, these actions are highly disturbing the footfall from the main street road & even to the customers.

The identity of the transgender inside the local train are welcomed by a few and not noticed by most. They develop a solitar y ifluence around them unlike the vendors and others. The minority gender makes their living by demanding money from the local passengers; of ten during the peak travel hours of the day. The periodically change of platforms and compar tments/ station to station on a daily basis to collect money for their living.

Though these activities are insurgent, Mumbai local trains cater more employments and living desirability to people of all backgrounds and socio economic groups.

Mumbai’s Dadar is the busiest suburb in the city, its a densely populated residential and shopping neighburhood. It has been the epicenter of commercial activities resulting as large economic bene_ter to the city.

Dadar’s market is situated right outside the local station. It is thronged by thousands of visitors each day.

From _owers to household wares ever y thing is available at economical prices. Space being a constraint in this precinct it forces the vendors to settle wherever loose spaces are available.
