Director's Note

This production started with a fact from Meghan Hone: she had sung the roles of the Mother and Witch in different productions. From there, it progressed to an idea where the Witch controlled the story. Instead of Angels, we have malevolent Forest Wraiths. The Sandman, normally a Mezzo-Soprano became a Countertenor, and that character’s motives changed to something more “chaotic neutral”. And while we turned a sweet holiday favorite into a horror tale, the music remains the same so the juxtaposition makes for an eerie dissonance.

I’m proud this spooky take on a classic is my first production as Resident Stage Director for Opera Del Sol and Central Florida Vocal Arts. I’m thrilled to be working with this amazing staff devoted to bringing great music to new and veteran listeners.

Anyone who has spoken with me for five minutes knows my love for opera. That I get to share it with a wide range of audiences is an incredible blessing and I look forward to our next production, The Secret Garden.
