This season, we took audiences on powerful vocal voyages. We set sail with The Pirates of Penzance, fell in love with Florence in The Light in the Piazza, and now we take you to turn-of-thecentury Colorado with The Ballad of Baby Doe.

We’re looking forward to beginning renovations on our future home at 460 E New England—the former Winter Park Library. This isn’t just a building. It’s a commitment to the next generation. As a full time resident of the second floor, the CFVA Conservatory will be so much more than classrooms it will be a safe haven, a launchpad, and a legacy. A place where a young soprano finds her strength. Where emerging artists discover their voices... where every student hears, "Yes, you can. "

The Ballad of Baby Doe is a timeless American opera by the composer Douglas Moore. The opera’s premiere took place at the Central City Opera in Colorado in 1956.
Set amidst the Colorado Silver Boom, this story centers on the real-life figure Elizabeth “Baby Doe” Tabor, whose unwavering spirit and tender love for silver magnate Horace Tabor triumph amidst adversity.

“How will history remember you?”
That question stayed with me as I explored the true stories behind the historical figures who inspired The Ballad of Baby Doe. History hasn’t always been kind. There was President Chester A. Arthur, who was reduced to an “accidental” president, and William Jennings Bryan often remembered more for his role in the Scopes Trial than his once-commanding political presence. But Horace Tabor and Elizabeth “Baby Doe” Tabor endure in our cultural memory, not for political achievements or courtroom debates, but for their deep—and controversial—devotion to one another.
Douglas Moore’s opera sanitizes life in the rugged mining towns of the American West, glossing over the stark realities of boom-andbust economies, extreme poverty, and unchecked opulence. And as Augusta, Horace’s former wife, keenly suggests, not all of his business dealings were above board and may have been on the shady side. Yet, opera is not the genre of historical scrutiny—it is the realm of passion, beauty, and the human heart. At its core, this piece is a love story, and few operas capture that spirit more poignantly than Baby Doe.
If this is your first time experiencing The Ballad of Baby Doe, you’re in good company. Not only is this a Central Florida premiere, but several longtime opera fans have told me this will be their first time seeing it staged. I’m thrilled to bring this quintessentially American story to life, filled with lovely post-Romantic harmonies and beautifully melodic arias.
It has been an honor to explore this work with such a dedicated cast and crew. I hope you are as moved by this opera as we have been in bringing it to you. I also want to thank you for supporting live performance—especially live opera. I’ve always believed that the arts are a mirror to our humanity. The works we create, support, and preserve will shape the way future generations remember us. And perhaps, that is the most enduring legacy of all.

Born in the United States Virgin Islands, Lyric Baritone Kenny Nisbett is over the moon being able to perform in his first principal role in a full length opera. Playing characters such as “The Commentator” in Derrick Wang’s Scalia Ginsburg or “Gianni Schicchi” in Puccini’s one act named after said character, Kenny Nisbett is no stranger to comedic roles and is excited to play such a complex character like Horace Tabor. Even more than that, Kenny Nisbett is most excited to sing On stage with his daughter who is, funnily enough, playing his daughter in the show too! Kenny would like to give a very big shout out to his wife Chelsey Nisbett who has always been his biggest supporter!!
Deanna L. Giron is a seasoned performer whose lyrical voice and heartfelt storytelling have captivated Central and South Florida audiences. Known for her timeless elegance, Deanna specializes in vintage music, bringing the golden eras of Jazz, Swing, and Classic Broadway to life. In addition to her performance career, Deanna is an adjunct voice instructor at Seminole State College, where she enjoys mentoring the next generation of singers.
Harrison Brousseau has never run for President in the 19th century before, but he’s sure he’d likely lose. He may win the hearts of his family and friends, but many of them wouldn’t even have legally been able to vote for him at the time. Nor should they vote for Harrison, really. He doesn’t know nearly enough about the economy of the 19th century, nor the intricacies of policies foreign and domestic. The closest (and much more reasonable and infinitely less devastating) thing you can do to voting for Harrison, is following him on Instagram at @ harrisonbrousseau or going to his website harrisonbrousseau.com
Lyric is ecstatic to be a part of this production. She enjoys all aspects of performing and can’t wait to be a part of her first Opera.
Anais started her performing arts career last summer with CFVA’s Summer Institute. Anais has always loved being on stage and has always found her way to a microphone. Previously, they tackled the role of Van Helsing in CFVA’s *Dracula* and brought some island vibes as Tully Mars in Athens Theatre’s *Escape to Margaritaville* in DeLand. When not on stage, they navigate the exciting world of real estate, making this opera a fun change of pace. Sharing the stage with such an amazing cast and crew has been an absolute joy—thanks for making the experience unforgettable!
