MESSAGE FROM DFIT As you may have already heard, Soldier On is joining the PSP and DFIT fold with a primary focus on increasing program reach and further leveraging the physical and social impact that fitness, sport, recreation and health promotion can have on our ill and injured personnel. With the growth of the CAF Transition Group, Soldier On is also growing with 9 new regional PSP Soldier On staff to be embedded within regional transition units. These new staff will be primarily focused on increasing local and regional Soldier On opportunities and to maximize this effort will need to partner with many of you as well as some of your external community stakeholders. Be sure to seek out our new PSP team members to discuss how your respective local programs could be further leveraged in support of our ill and injured CAF personnel. US DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE WARRIOR GAMES, 22-30 JUN 19 J.M. Feyko, National Manager Soldier On Soldier On successfully led Team Canada’s participation in the recent US Department of Defense Warrior Games, 22-30 Jun 19 in Tampa, FLA. Team Canada was comprised of 36 serving Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans who competed in 13 sports against more than 300 ill and injured armed forces members and veterans from the U.S., U.K., Australia, Denmark, and the Netherlands. The Games officially came to an end with Team Canada having won a total of 21 medals, including 10 gold, 5 silver, and 6 bronze. While Team Canada’s showing on the podium was an impressive one, the true impact of the event extends far beyond the medal count and even the Games themselves. The inspiring performance of each athlete is a testament to their strength and resiliency, as well as to the important role of sports in supporting the recovery of ill and injured armed service members and veterans.

“Participating in these Games has been an incredible, life-changing experience. Sports have given me an outlet that I never thought I’d have again and made me realize that I am not alone. Thank you to my teammates and coaches, to the new friends I’ve met in Tampa, to the Soldier On program, and to my family and friends – I couldn’t have done this without you. PSP REPRESENTED AT INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS

NORDIC MILITARY SPORT LEADERS CONFERENCE Tara Reilly was invited as the keynote speaker to the Nordic Military Sport Leaders Conference and Scientific Symposium of Soldiers Physical Performance where she presented “Combat Integration: Implication for Physical Employment Standards” to a mix of military and civilians from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. Tara was also awarded with the NATO Human Factors and Medicine Panel Excellence Award for her work with the NATO Research Group on Reducing Dismounted Soldiers Burden.

CISM INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM CISM, since its origins, organizes an International Symposium as an important forum to present and discuss science results on physical activity within the Armed Forces. A small group of international scientists were invited to share the scientific-academic vocation of CISM in military sports; Canada was represented by the following three PSP speakers.

NAVY BIKE RIDE Jean-François Delorme, Navy Bike Ride Coordinator, HQ Ottawa June 8th 2019 marked the third edition of the Navy Bike Ride in Ottawa, the perfect weather and great turnout made it a huge success. With participation increasing steadily since day one, this year was no exception.

Ottawa / Gatineau saw 1150 cyclists participate, which represents a 40% increase. Nationally, we saw our overall numbers grow by 30%! That’s 1700 cyclists of all ages who participated in this fun family cycling event. The over 20 shadow rides across Canada play a MAJOR part in helping us grow our brand. They could not be possible without the help of all the PSP staff involved. Your commitment to helping our community is incredible.

The Royal Canadian Navy is engaged to give back to the Royal Canadian Benevolent Fund and to Support our troops. We did not fall short of our objective, together we were able to give back more than 11 000$.

The Navy Bike Ride committee would like to thank all of you who have worked near and far on this project, without you, our success would not be as great! Special thanks goes out to the PSP sponsorship team, their dedication to getting us the support we need is invaluable.

In the next year we will be working hard to make 2020 edition even bigger and better! Our goal is to get 2500 cyclists to participate across Canada in Navy Bike Ride events. Hope to see you out there.

UPDATE ON FORCE REWARD PROGRAM Good day Newsletter followers, I wanted to take some time to give you a quick update on FORCE Reward Program and also pass on some kudos to our field employees.

The FORCE Rewards Program is nearing its first year launch. You have all been a huge enabler to ensure its success and have been excellent team players while we faced 1st year program implementation unforeseen hiccups. We continue to refine our processes, improving our data accuracy and have made significant progress in streamlining the delivery of the rewards to your location. Our survey indicated that CAF members understand the program intent and our front line employees have certainly spread a consistent message towards this new program. Needless to say that by now you all understand that the program is designed to recognize Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel who achieve high levels of health-related fitness and operational readiness on their FORCE Fitness Profile, that the FORCE Rewards Program was implemented to extrinsically motivate CAF personnel to pursue physical activity and recognize those who achieve excellence.

The DFIT team has been working diligently with our partner Logistik Unicorp since April 2019 to be in a position to deliver year two of our FORCE Rewards Program which is scheduled to begin calendar year 2020. Next year, we will be expanding the eligibility to the CAF rewards program to the entire reserve community. Starting 01 January 2020, all Regular and Reserve Forces personnel will be eligible for the 2020 Rewards program. We are also working on expanding the delivery of the rewards to more than 250 additional locations to deliver rewards to the CAF Reserve community. More info will be distributed to local management on the FORCE Reward Program in the coming weeks.

I have included our survey results on the program and will continue to monitor program effectiveness and highlights of how CAF personnel feel about the program. I thank you again for all your hard work regarding this important program.

ICSPP 2020, FEB 10-14TH, 2020 QUEBEC CITY– UPDATE FROM THE SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE The International Congress on Soldier Physical Performance 2020, organized by PSP Human Performance, is fast approaching, and the peer-review of the submitted abstracts is now completed. The Scientific committee is happy to announce that a total of 400 abstracts have been submitted to the congress. Of these 400 abstracts, 173 were accepted into the 30 thematic sessions, and another 102 were accepted for oral communication. There will be 103 poster presentations. This will result in a total of 86 hours of oral presentations delivered in 4 separate rooms consecutively.

The congress has drawn attention and interest from countries all around the world, and civilian and military researchers from 21 different countries will be presenting their work. If you are interested in attending ICSPP 2020, visit the web page www.icspp2020.ca.

UPDATE ON SAR TECH PHYSICAL EMPLOYMENT STANDARD The SAR Tech occupation has decided they will use FORCE as their annual physical fitness evaluation. To remain operationally current, SAR Techs must maintain minimum quarterly, semi-annual and annual currencies (FOM 3.2) which include inherent physical demands well beyond the demands of the FORCE evaluation. However, because the physical demands of the top tier of Operational Missions far exceed both FORCE and Currencies, it is essential that they include these capacities to maintain operational readiness; PSP fitness and reconditioning can help them prepare for and maintain this fitness, and prevent and recover from injury. PSP FITNESS COORDINATOR OJT PROGRAM TRAINING 24–26 SEPT 2019 By: Félix-Antoine Proulx, CAF Fitness Policies and Standards Coordinator PSP HQ and National Training Centre (NTC) organized an ‘On The Job’ (OJT) Training for all of the B/W Fitness Coordinators (FC) for three days this September 2019. The objective of the training was to provide them with the tools they needed to train their Fitness and Sports Instructors (FSI) to effectively administer Specialty Trade Program Evaluations.

During the first day of training, FCs were provided with the Qualification Standards for their respective evaluation, OJT Plan, and information regarding mentoring, group facilitation and debriefs. On the second and third days of training, FCs were split into two distinct groups and were instructed to carry out mini scenarios, switching between roles as the participant, FSI, FC and Facilitator. The scenarios included the evaluation set-up and the guided walk-through, participant mentoring and registration, and a mock evaluation. Two evaluations were used for these scenarios: the Firefighter Pre-Entry Fitness Evaluation (FPFE) and the CANSOFCOM Physical Fitness Screening Evaluation. Following each scenario, the groups took time to debrief on their thoughts and concerns and to give constructive feedback to their peers.

Transferring this capacity to locally qualify FSIs to administer Specialty Trade Program Evaluations to FCs, allows each B/W to be more responsive to their testing needs. This will also allow the NTC to provide content that is more applicable to all FSI during the FS2 course and increase course capacity from 12 to 20.

PSP HQ would like to thank the participants, as well as the NTC who made this week possible. With such a great team of qualified individuals, we also hope that this week gave everyone the opportunity to connect, share valuable information and network to help them handle future concerns.

GREAT WORK IN THE FIELD OBSTACLE CLEARANCE COURSE 2019 VALCARTIER COMPETITION: TWO PSP LOOKING GREAT! Quentin Martin, Fitness Instructor, Valcartier On September 10, 12 and 13, the 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (5 CMBG) held the 14th edition of the Obstacle Clearance Course (OCC) competition. The OCC is an opportunity to develop some of the most sought-after qualities in soldiers: endurance, strength, cardiovascular endurance, confidence, self-improvement, cohesion and warrior spirit. In the military, all of these qualities help improve readiness and operational success. This competition is a perfect part of Mission Ready’s operationalization.

In addition to the activities on the OCC site, for a 2nd year we had the addition of a Norwegian-style walk (30km with a 25 lb bag), which tests the strength of the participants’ physical and mental limits.

Two PSP took up the challenge of competing in the event. In addition to being full-fledged competitors, they truly made their mark with their performance. Quentin Martin finished first in his category at the Norwegian walk and 2nd of all participants with a time of 2 hours 53 minutes. Then, for the obstacle course, Onie Laflamme did the PSPs proud by not only winning her category, but also by being the best woman to compete on the course by crossing the 775 metres and 28 obstacles in 8 minutes 50 seconds.

THE POWER OF BEING FIT AND FLAUNTING IT! Josey Yearley, Fitness and Sports Manager 4 Wing Cold Lake To heck with being humble! The Fitness and Sports Staff at 4 Wing are physically fit, and they’re flaunting it.

Yup, we’re fit! Just check out the PSP Fitness Personnel FORCE Evaluation Report released 19 July 2019. We were 2nd only to Vancouver for performance in Canada West, and far surpassed the “overall average” across PSP. But just being fit isn’t enough. It’s what you do with that fitness that really matters! And like I said, we’re choosing to flaunt it.

By “flaunt it” I mean...we’re letting our military clients know that, like them, we are committed to attaining and maintaining exceptional levels of personal fitness (as measured by the FORCE test), and our jobs depend on it!

How do we let them know? By recognizing the exceptional performance of PSP staff in much the same way as we recognize exceptional performance for military members. If my staff attain Platinum on their annual FORCE test, their picture will be displayed right alongside that of their military counterparts on our “leaderboard”. And now, with the advent of the FORCE Rewards Program, we have secured local funding to ensure our staff members can publicly display their superior FORCE performance via a “reward t-shirt”, just like our military members! I wish I could show you this PSP “bragging rights apparel”, but we are still in the process of finalizing the design.

We will however be all set for our next round of fitness tests, carrot in hand.

But why is this important or powerful? Quite simply because we are in the fitness business, and if we are not fit ourselves how much credibility do we hold with our customers? “Leadership by example” is pretty much a “bomb proof” approach. By letting our clients know we are testing ourselves against the same standards as them, and “setting our bar” at incentive level, we gain instant credibility and garner “buy in” in a heartbeat.

So in a nut-shell, 4 Wing is moving forward with nationally sanctioned, locally funded PSP specific FORCE Incentive t-shirts that will not only serve as a reward for the staff, but will also act as a marketing tool that will be both highly visible and meaningful to our military clients. I couldn’t be more excited! I for one can’t wait to claim my reward!!

FINDING “BALANCE” WITH SLEEP/REST AT 22 WING NORTH BAY Lucas DeMarco, Manager Health Promotion, 22 Wing PSP Defending Canada’s airspace through the surveillance of over 200,000 flights each year is a 24/7/365 operation. This means shiftwork and everything that comes with it.

For many years the ripple effects of fatigue within 22 Wing’s shift-working population have been apparent to PSP staff with members frequently identifying chronic fatigue as a source of stress contributing to issues ranging across all HP core programming areas of Nutrition, Social Wellness, Injury Reduction, & Addictions. Constantly challenged to help military personnel strike a better balance between this unique operational stressor and their personal health, the local HP department fought the good fight in the development of member’s personal skills to combat fatigue but often felt that the issue was only being tackled from one angle. While the mission’s operational realities would surely remain the same, if only there was a way to change the environment.

The perfect scenario for change began to present itself in 2016 when the Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) 12

was implemented by the RCAF identifying fatigue as a “Highpriority threat”. HP’s subsequent local partnership with Wing Flight Safety led to environmental risk assessments, including the timely DFIT HR-BASE study, all of which consistently identified a potential need for environmental changes in the interest of both the mission and the health of members.

With the support and collaboration of forward thinking Military and PSP leadership, today 22 Wing is enjoying achievements in both the development of healthy organizational policy and environmental workplace changes in support of FRMS, most notably the implementation of sleeping pods in the operational section. While much has been achieved, the new Physical Performance Strategy’s Sleep/Rest opens up even more possibilities for progress.

Sometimes achieving change is all about timing. Speaking of which, make sure to get your 7-8 hours tonight.

LESSONS FROM SPORTS Rick McKie, Manager of Fitness and Sports, Garrison Petawawa This is true-to-life story linking sports to combat effectiveness.

NHL Hall of Fame inductee Conn Smythe was a soldier in both World Wars. In 1942, while taking his Battery Commander’s course at Camp Petawawa, a team he coached, played a team from Renfrew Ontario. With only 8 players, the team from Renfrew won 14 – 6. The Renfrew centre, Charlie Lemenchick (who was about to join the war effort), had scored 8 goals and assisted the other 6.

Before Charlie passed in 2012, he shared stories with me about that hockey game, and of his time helping to liberate Holland during WW2. I asked him what training was most valuable in combat. He said, “The first time that we came under fire, it was the lessons learned at basic training. Those lessons ran out after 5 minutes of contact. After that, it was all the lessons I had learned from playing sports”. Charlie spent much of his spare time playing the sports he loved. It was the lessons on those fields that improved his strength, endurance, speed, dexterity, combined with situational awareness that best prepared him for war. Charlie admitted that without being able to “read the play” in battle, and without knowing his own strengths and limitation from sports, that he may not have made it out alive.

The times have changed, but what if our soldiers were encouraged to play as much sports as they did in the 1940s?

CFB MONTREAL - WE SUPPORT THE UNITED WAY IN MONTREAL! On November 21, the PSP team at the Montreal Garrison will be offering a second colourful United Way morning at the Montreal Fitness Centre for our soldiers and defence employees. There will be several innovative activities to raise funds for the organization, which aims to improve the lives of Canadians across the country: • A mini-triathlon;

• The “make your PSP sweat” activity;

• T he 3rd edition of the famous costumed team dodgeball tournament; 13

• T he draw for a locker at the Fitness Centre, which the winner will be able to use for 6 months; and

• Cleaning sports equipment with our ozone machine.

All profits from these activities will be donated to the United Way. The objective of the PSP team is to introduce members to different sports in a fun and friendly environment while promoting our services.

2019 ULTIMATE OBSTACLE COURSE IN MONTREAL!

Wow! What a successful fifth edition! More than 150 participants took part in this incredible challenge, where the PSP team’s goal was to boost participants’ resilience. The course featured more than 15 tough, creative obstacles over approximately 10 km. The winner of the 2019 edition was Capt. Philippe Joly of Svc Ops. The event was the result of phenomenal teamwork with several partners of the Montreal Garrison. It was a great success and helped spread the PSP’s excellent reputation in the region!

HOW TORONTO / SOUTHWESTERN AREA ARE APPROACHING BALANCE / MISSION READY Toronto and SouthWestern Ontario have been promoting the BALANCE Strategy in a variety of ways as it seamlessly fits into our programming and events. Being invited to the Commander’s Conference affords us the opportunity to directly address the leadership from the top, gain their support, and detail the services that we have available to members. We also introduced a Spring Fair this year that heavily focused on Balance. We included partnerships from a variety of health and wellness sections, both internal and external. It provided a mid-day one stop shop and lunch was provided. Close to 90% of the military community attended and the success has driven other departments and organizations to request a booth for next year.

Our Health Promotion team ran a Spring Step Challenge combined with a Weekly Wednesday Walk/ Run Group. This resulted in friendly competition and millions of steps throughout the month of May. Working in teams of two enhanced the accountability and

positive pressure to keep moving. We had a nutritious awards lunch with prizes for the top 3 teams, a participation award, and a Fitbit Charge raffle prize. Another new initiative that supports the BALANCE Strategy is our monthly Spin & Learns. The Toronto team teaches an interval spin class during an educational presentation based on health topics such as injury prevention, nutrition, social wellness and addiction awareness. Rec and military members benefit from a workout for both mind and body in the same noon hour class!

MY DEPLOYMENT IN 200 WORDS... AND A BIT

Amélie Coté, Fitness and Sports Instructor, Saint-Jean Garrison On May 22nd, I was on a 3-month deployment for Operations Projection and Neon aboard HMCS Regina. This deployment was an extraordinary experience for me, both personally and professionally. I hadn’t really travelled before, I had never set foot on a boat and I had never been on deployment. In addition, in Saint-Jean, I work mainly with recruits, so working with soldiers was also new to me. I met an amazing community and made new friends. It also allowed me to travel all over the world. In fact, we left Dubai and then went to Vietnam, Japan, Australia, Fiji and Hawaii. During this deployment, I gained a lot of self-confidence.

I like to go out of my comfort zone to learn and deployment 15 certainly did that. It was an opportunity for me to work on my

leadership and senses of responsibility and organization. I was the only civilian on the boat and the only person in charge of fitness (I forgot to tell you why I left). So I was an employee, but I was also my own boss. In conclusion, my adventure made me realize how much I love my job. I didn’t feel like I was working a single day!

CANADIAN JOINT OPERATIONS COMMAND COMMENDATION

CAR co-won an international communications industry award for their social media campaign for the 2018 edition of CAR. The International Association of Business Communicators (https://www.iabc.com) held its annual award gala in Vancouver this past June where the awards were handed out recognizing the great work by CAR Team led by Michael Timmermans, Canada Army Run Communications Manager.

Duane Farrell from the National PSP Training Centre was recently awarded the Canadian Joint Operations Command Commendation. Duane had deployed to Latvia from June 2017 to January 2018 as part of Canada’s contribution to the NATO deterrent in the Baltic.

“CIRC DE SORE LEGS” CHALLENGE CULTIVATES FELLOWSHIP AND FITNESS IN BORDEN A recent challenge at CFB Borden humourously titled, “Circ de Sore Legs” – initiated and conceptualized by the Canadian Forces Military Police Academy (CFMPA) command team of LCol Adam Battista, CWO David Ridley and Rachel Griese, PSP Fitness Coordinator for the CFMPA – was launched in the hopes of furthering the “fit for life” mantra the CFMPA fosters within their unit.

The challenge was simple: gain points for your unit by getting active. Participants could achieve one point for every five thousand steps taken, or one point for every thirty minutes of cardio completed. Units competing then tallied their totals, submitted their collective points and a team average was logged.

The Personnel Support Programs (PSP) team was the eventual winner – but it was the camaraderie and collective teamwork that was the highlight of participating in the Circ de Sore Legs challenge. Members from a number of PSP departments participated – not only the Fitness and Sports department, but also PSP members from the Community Recreation Department, Health Promotion, PSP headquarters and Facilities personnel also took part. The PSP team encouraged each other both in their respective departments, and worked together as a whole towards a common goal to achieve their best and have fun while doing it.

Various units from across CFB Borden took part in the Circ de Sore Legs challenge, and many other individuals took up the challenge, with the PSP team winning by a narrow margin of 30 points.
