WELCOMING OUR PRESIDENT/CEO, PATRICK CISLER! Born and raised in Holland, Patrick Cisler has deep roots in this community. His father worked for Prince Corporation, his mother volunteered at Holland Hospital, and his brother serves as a police officer in Zeeland. Patrick and his wife Elyse have two young children, Finley and Brady, and enjoy spending time as a family in West Michigan’s many beautiful outdoor spaces. Previously, Patrick served as the founding Executive Director of the Lakeshore Nonprofit Alliance and Community SPOKE for 10 years. He stepped into the role of President/CEO at CFHZ in May. You have been leading the Foundation for six months. How would you sum up the experience so far? Lifegiving. I have really prioritized getting out and meeting with donors, nonprofit leaders, and other key partners. Hearing their motivations, passions, and the impact they are having in the community, and how CFHZ can partner with them, affirms for me why I am here. Most of your career has been in economic and community development. What attracted you to this type of work? I have a passion for “big picture” community development work that really moves the needle. I enjoy playing the role of a connector in bringing different people, organizations, and perspectives together to collaborate for a thriving community. At CFHZ, I once again have the opportunity to play the role of connector, this time between those who serve the community by giving and those who serve the community by doing. We all know leadership isn’t easy. What drew you to the President/CEO role at the Community Foundation? A long-time mentor has asked me many times over the years, “where can you do the most good?” At this point in my life and career, the answer to that question is, “at the helm of CFHZ.” It was an amazing opportunity to live fully into my personal mission and help the Holland/Zeeland community become a thriving place for all. From your perspective, what’s one challenge facing our community? And how will CFHZ play a role in helping to solve that challenge? One that has been on my mind lately is education and specifically post-secondary educational attainment. For a region with good school systems, we have relatively low post-secondary attainment rates compared to other Michigan communities. We also know that cost is the primary barrier to obtaining a postsecondary degree. One very concrete way CFHZ is helping address this challenge is through the Holland/ Zeeland Promise Scholarship Program. Thanks to some amazing staff and the generosity of donors, we are able to cover the expense of post-secondary tuition while also providing side-by-side support services to local students during their time in school. Are there any opportunities you are excited about for CFHZ and our community? I’m excited about the role CFHZ can play in continuing to inspire the spirit of giving and service in our families, companies, schools, faith institutions, and neighborhoods. We all have a role to play in helping shape the community we want to live in. If someone wants to reach out and schedule time with you, how can they connect? Email me at pcisler@cfhz.org or call me at the office (616-396-6590) and I’d be happy to meet!

2023 CELEBRATION OF PHILANTHROPY Almost 800 community members, nonprofit partners, and donors gathered at the Holland Civic Center for our annual Celebration of Philanthropy. This year, we recognized those who are turning their charitable passions into legacies, and featured videos about Compassionate Heart Ministries, I AM Academy, and Nate and Heather Volkema. Special thanks to our generous event sponsors, including Legacy sponsor Warner Norcross + Judd.

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT: THE FARMHOUSE DELI We are grateful to the restaurant and bar partners, like The Farmhouse Deli, who help make our Celebration of Philanthropy event possible. We asked owner Christine Ferris to share why she chooses to be part of this event each year.

“Supporting CFHZ is one of the most effective ways to positively impact our community because their reach is wide and incredibly well curated. They distribute endowment funds to a wide range of nonprofits that help so many in our community. The Celebration is always a fun evening with guests who are united in their desire to contribute to our community’s wellbeing. Those are the sort of people I want to feed and thank for their commitment to philanthropy! We are happy to be part of this fun atmosphere each year.” Christine Ferris, Owner, The Farmhouse Deli WINTER 2023 CFHZ NEWSLETTER 2

A LASTING LEGACY As the endowment grows, so does the impact we can create Today, Tomorrow, and Forever. In 2023, CFHZ received an almost $1.5 million estate gift! This generous donor disclosed their commitment during the Today. Tomorrow. Forever campaign in 2015, which raised awareness of the Community’s Endowment and the accessibility and long-term impact of estate gifts. The campaign ultimately created over 100 new legacy commitments for the Foundation.

“We are grateful to the donor of this estate gift for their incredible support of the Community’s Endowment. As an organization, we rely upon the resources available in the Endowment to create impact by responding to our community’s most pressing needs and promising opportunities, even as they change over time,” said Patrick Cisler, President/CEO.

CFHZ SUPPORTS CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Few factors are more critical to a child’s current and long-term well-being than the consistent presence of caring adults in their lives and a physically and emotionally safe environment. However, many children in our community experience significant instability at home for reasons ranging from the financial and logistical challenges faced by single parents, to the difficulty of creating consistent family routines for parents who work multiple jobs or off shifts, the absence of a parent due to incarceration, or the difficulties of healthy parenting for individuals who experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) themselves. Through our proactive grantmaking program, the Community Foundation invested $130,000 towards efforts to reduce the number of kids growing up with significant instability in their home environment, while also meeting children and families who are currently living these realities with the support they need to reduce potential harm and provide pathways for hope and healthy relationships.

GRANT SPOTLIGHT

MomsBloom Expands Into Ottawa County The days and weeks after a child is born are often challenging for families as they navigate changing routines, post-partum health concerns, and feelings of overwhelm and anxiety. This season of life can be even harder for mothers without a reliable support network of family or friends. MomsBloom was founded in 2008 to step into the gaps for families without support systems, meeting their needs with compassionate and hands-on assistance. The co-founders of the organization met in a playgroup for their children, where they shared details of their difficult post-partum experiences and began imagining ways to serve mothers and infants in the first three months after childbirth. The seed money for the organization was provided by a local family, who decided to forgo holiday gifts that year and make an impactful gift to launch MomsBloom. Under the leadership of Carrie Smith, Executive Director since 2016, MomsBloom has grown to serve 400 families in Kent County. The organization uses a volunteer-based model, recruiting, training, and matching passionate community members with local families who need postpartum assistance. Volunteers tailor their visits to unique needs of the household, providing a listening ear, doing light housework, caring for the infant or siblings so parents can shower or rest, and referring to community resources like mental health services if needed. One volunteer, Donna, came to MomsBloom hoping to be matched with families where the children did not have grandparents. She matched with five families over the course of several years and has continued her relationship

with all of them beyond the three months of volunteer time offered by MomsBloom. Known affectionately as “Grandma Donna,” she attends birthday parties, celebrates kindergarten graduations, and continues to be a pillar of support for those families. “What we’re aiming to do is help improve outcomes for postpartum mothers and babies,” said Carrie. “Many aspects of the postpartum experience are universal, but they impact populations including women of color and those with limited household incomes at a much greater rate. As a volunteer-based organization, we have the ability to serve a diverse range of clients while prioritizing those without an existing support system.” MomsBloom prioritizes collaboration in achieving positive outcomes for volunteers, clients, and the organization. A pilot program with Grand Valley State University’s Kirkhof College of Nursing allowed students to volunteer with MomsBloom while gaining clinical hours. They also gained perspective on the struggles of motherhood, equipping them to compassionately screen patients for post-partum health concerns. That pilot was so successful that it is now being duplicated

with Hope College’s nursing department. CFHZ recently granted $60,000 over two years to MomsBloom to assist in their expansion into Ottawa County. “We know there’s a tremendous amount of need. There are lots of possibilities to build partnerships with Ottawa County-based organizations and faith institutions and begin relationship building with individuals who have reached out about volunteering,” said Carrie. “We are grateful to CFHZ for helping open the door and adding to the momentum as we expand. As long as there are new parents in the community, our services will be necessary to help create thriving children and families.”

SPOTLIGHT ON ZEELAND HIGH SCHOOL Class of 1966 Promise Scholarship Fund

Earlier this year, the Zeeland High School (ZHS) Class of 1966 established a permanent named fund at the Community Foundation to benefit the Holland/Zeeland Promise scholarship program. A few members of the 1966 class were already supporting the Promise through their personal philanthropy, and felt the program was deserving of additional resources. They presented it to their classmates as an opportunity for the ZHS Class of 1966 to create a lasting legacy and support the educational goals of bright young students, many of whom return to the area after graduation to live, work, and continue to give back to the community. An additional motivator was the opportunity for the ZHS Class of 1966 to “rival their rivals” – and engage in a friendly competition with the Holland High School Class of 1966. The HHS Class of 1966 established a permanent named fund at CFHZ in support of the Holland/Zeeland Promise in 2021 and have raised over $100,000 for their fund so far. The founding members of the HHS Class of 1966 hoped to inspire other graduating classes to support the Promise as a legacy project. Both classes agree the competition is worthwhile when it benefits local youth. The ZHS Class of 1966 kicked off their fund at a lunch event this September at local institution, Frank’s. There were 31 ZHS Class of ’66 members present, along with spouses and friends. During the event, it was announced that an anonymous donor will match all donations to their fund up to a total of $10,000! Gifts made through December 31, 2023 will be eligible for the match. Support from funds like the ZHS Class of 1966 has a ripple effect as addressing and supporting access to higher education creates intergenerational impact. Attaining a degree is a significant 13 CFHZ NEWSLETTER WINTER 2023

predictor of positive outcomes for education, workforce, and life success for graduates and their families. The Holland/Zeeland Promise currently boasts a 96% graduation rate, compared to a national average of 63% (National Student Clearinghouse). Past Promise scholars are now working in healthcare, education, and human services, to name a few. The ZHS Class of 1966 fund and the HHS Class of 1966 fund both contribute to the Promise endowment, which was launched with a one-million-dollar gift from an anonymous donor in 2021. Designed to be a permanent financial resource for the Holland/Zeeland Promise, the endowment has enabled the program to grow in recent years and accept more students while maintaining a high-level of individual support to each scholar. “The Promise is truly a partnership between scholars, donors, and the Community Foundation,” said Stacy Timmerman, Director of Scholarships. “It’s a privilege to watch the program evolve and grow, thanks in great part to the generosity of individuals and groups like the ZHS Class of 1966.”

The following donors contributed to the Holland/Zeeland Promise program between September 2022 and September 2023. These partners help empower area students to achieve their dreams of higher education. We are grateful for their support! We make every effort to ensure donor names are listed correctly. If you have a concern related to this donor list, please contact our office at 616-396-6590.

CELEBRATING OUR HISTORY The Zeeland Foundation

1996

1973 The Zeeland Community Foundation is established.

September 2023 marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of Zeeland Community Foundation! In 1973, the Zeeland Community Foundation (ZCF) was established to provide a tax-free method for individuals, families, and companies to fund charitable, educational, and civic projects for the greater Zeeland area. The original Board of Trustees was comprised of Melvin Boonstra, Robert Den Herder, Jack DeWitt, Frank Hoogland, Robert Hoover, Ronald Klamt, Raymond Schaap, Adrian Vandenbosch and Ruth Wolbrink. In the early years of ZCF, the organization funded a wide array of community projects including lighting for local softball fields, advanced medical equipment for heart attack patients, and a location for the Zeeland Historical Society. “Funds were raised and distributed in the same year,” said Ann Query, who served on the ZCF Board starting in 1986 (and later the CFHZ Board). “There wasn’t an endowment. A fundraising goal was set for a particular project, and Board members worked their connections to secure donations.” In the mid-1990s, ZCF Board Chair, Grace Piersma, and Holland Community Foundation (HCF) Board Chair, Ken Peirce, led their respective organizations in a conversation about a merger. Along with Bill Vanderbilt, President of HCF, they worked diligently to build trust in the respective communities. The opportunity to raise $2 million in unrestricted endowment and complete a second youth endowment fund challenge match from the W.K. Kellogg Company secured the deal. In 1996, the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area was established. In celebration, one of CFHZ’s first grants was designated to the Paw Paw Drive Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge. “The walking bridge connects the City of Zeeland to Holland Charter Township. It became a symbol of the linked areas and the future of collaboration represented by the Community Foundation,” said Ann. Today, the bridge displays engraved bricks honoring members of the Bridge Builder Legacy Society, individuals who have made legacy charitable commitments which will benefit our community for years to come.

RECOGNIZING THE DEN HERDER FAMILY The Den Herder family are long-standing, valued supporters of the Community Foundation. Tom Den Herder is serving as Chair of our Board of Trustees exactly 50 years after his father, Robert, was the founding Board Chair of the Zeeland Community Foundation! 15 CFHZ NEWSLETTER WINTER 2023
