A NOTE FROM PATRICK CISLER, PRESIDENT/CEO

Dear Friends of the Foundation,

As we embrace the season of giving, it’s a natural time to reflect on how we can continue making a lasting difference in our community, both now and in the future. At CFHZ, it is our privilege to walk alongside those who share our belief that where giving and serving thrive, the community thrives too.

One of the services we offer for charitably-minded individuals and families is Charitable Estate Management, designed to help donors create a legacy beyond their lifetimes. Combining charitable planned gifts with your overall financial and estate planning can help you make an enduring impact on our community while minimizing your tax burden, providing for loved ones, and preserving your family name. As you gather with loved ones this season, I invite you to imagine how your legacy might nurture Holland/ Zeeland for generations to come.

If part of your pictured legacy includes leaving resources that will help the community thrive, let us help you achieve that goal. Our team works closely with each donor to design a highly customized plan that reflects their values and simplifies the charitable portion of their estate.

With our support, your estate’s financial representative can confidently fulfill your wishes, ensuring that your intent is honored and your hard-earned resources benefit the causes and organizations you cherish. Whether it’s supporting education, the arts, basic needs, faith-based causes, or emerging future needs, your charitable estate plan can help make a difference in the lives of future generations and strengthen the community you love.

We are here to help you think through your goals and design a giving strategy that resonates with your charitable priorities. This giving season, we invite you to consider how you might contribute to a brighter future for Holland/Zeeland. Whether through a charitable fund or planned gift, your philanthropy can strengthen the roots of our community and help it thrive for years to come.

In gratitude,

UNLOCKING THE POWER OF YOUR IRA QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS

LOOKING FOR A WAY TO MAKE A CHARITABLE IMPACT? If you are 70 ½ or older, consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA. This strategy allows you to manage your required minimum distributions (RMDs) while also creating positive impact for your community.

A QCD allows you to give up to $105,000 annually directly from your IRA to a qualified charity, avoiding income tax on the distribution. This unique option benefits both you and the causes you care about by

lowering your taxable income while helping you meet your philanthropic goals.

One of the greatest advantages of a QCD is that it counts toward your RMD, which begins at age 73 for most individuals. By choosing to make a QCD, you can reduce your taxable income for the year and potentially avoid moving into a higher tax bracket. For individuals who don’t itemize their deductions, this is an excellent way to still receive tax benefits from charitable giving.

READY TO START A CONVERSATION ABOUT YOUR CHARITABLE GOALS?

MAXIMIZE YOUR IMPACT BY WORKING WITH CFHZ

THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OFFERS AN EXCELLENT PATHWAY FOR THOSE CONSIDERING AN IRA QCD . CFHZ’s highly skilled staff has a deep knowledge of local needs, and we can help you direct your charitable dollars for greatest impact.

There are multiple fund types that donors can support with a QCD to CFHZ.

• Unrestricted and field of interest funds, which are part of the Community’s Endowment and respond to pressing needs and promising opportunities in the greater Holland/Zeeland area.

• Scholarship funds empower local students as they pursue continuing education at university or in skilled trades.

• Designated nonprofit funds support a specific nonprofit organization. CFHZ currently provides responsible and professional fund management to several area nonprofit endowments, or you can establish your own designated fund with a gift of $10,000 or more.

Unlike some charitable giving strategies, QCDs cannot be used to establish or add to a donor advised fund.

For more information about making a QCD through your IRA, contact your financial advisor or the team at CFHZ to discuss how you can give back to your community in a tax-savvy way.

2024 CELEBRATION OF PHILANTHROPY

This year’s Celebration of Philanthropy event was our largest ever! We welcomed over 800 community members, nonprofit partners, and donors to honor the power of giving. Together, we celebrated the people and organizations who are truly rooted in community, sharing the stories of Dr. Robert P. Swierenga and Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP). We also honored the late Les Hoogland and Frank Kraai for their commitment to community, during and beyond their lifetimes.

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT: CULTURE CHEESE SHOP

We are grateful to the restaurant and bar partners, like Culture Cheese Shop, who help make our Celebration of Philanthropy event possible.

We had the privilege of bringing Culture Cheese to the Celebration of Philanthropy for the first time this year. Being rooted in community and giving back to the Holland/Zeeland area is a huge part of what we love to do and having the opportunity to meet so many other people who feel the same way was such a blessing.

RESPONSIVE GRANTS FOR A THRIVING COMMUNITY

Our responsive grant program offers an open-funnel approach, enabling CFHZ to invest in a wide variety of organizations and initiatives tackling diverse community challenges. In June, we distributed $218,000 to support local nonprofits as they extended their missions in the areas of health, education, youth services, and basic human needs.

ESCAPE

AMOUNT AWARDED: $60,000 over 2 years

PURPOSE: To assist youth ages 14-17 to learn job skills, build relationships in the community, develop confidence, and gain workforce readiness so they can thrive in a productive and meaningful career post-high school. Youth of color and youth from low-income households often face barriers, including a lack of transportation or required documentation, to obtain a paying job and succeed in it.

“We know our summer jobs program has made a huge impact in the community, and we are excited to have the ability to grow into year-round program offerings. These grant funds also allow us to provide discounted tuition for driver’s education and increased staff expertise as we develop a world class youth employment program to rival any in the country.”

- KATHLEEN WELLER, INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

ODC NETWORK

AMOUNT AWARDED: $60,000 over 2 years

PURPOSE: To expand Reimagine Education, part of ODC Education Network’s nature-based learning support, to West Ottawa Public Schools (WOPS). Reimagine Education addresses significant challenges in student achievement, particularly in science, reading, and math. The expansion is anticipated to improve outcomes for over 2,400 students over the next two school years.

“Kids need movement, exploration, wonder, and opportunities to connect with their local community. ODC and community partners are looking to impact the educational outcomes of area students by regularly getting kids out of the classroom and involved in hands-on learning.”

- BOB WANDEL, DIRECTOR OF ODC EDUCATION NETWORK

GOOD SAMARITAN MINISTRIES

AMOUNT AWARDED: $35,000

PURPOSE: To improve office facilities, including adding private meeting spaces and more staff offices to meet a growing demand for services. Since 1969, Good Samaritan Ministries has been providing support through housing initiatives and stability programs.

ZEELAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS

AMOUNT AWARDED: $30,000

PURPOSE: To enhance the Introduction to Public Safety Course, increasing educational and career prospects for students who are interested in careers as first responders, emergency personnel, and other public safety professions. This helps ensure we have a diverse and capable workforce ready to protect and serve.

HOLLAND FREE HEALTH CLINIC

AMOUNT AWARDED: $18,812.88

PURPOSE: To acquire a new dental operatory system to improve patient care and program efficiency. Holland Free Health Clinic has been a crucial resource for underserved populations since 2002 and is a key provider of free dental care for the uninsured/underinsured accepting Medicaid.

CAMP BLODGETT

AMOUNT AWARDED: $15,000

PURPOSE: To expand summer academic and recreational programs. Camp Blodgett’s STEM Academy and Summer Camp serves children from low-income households, with the STEM Academy specifically seeking to increase middle school student competency in science and math and increase students’ social-emotional learning for those who have demonstrated a need for academic support.

HOLLAND FREE HEALTH CLINIC

Oral health is a critical component of overall wellness. Minor conditions left untreated can escalate into more serious health issues that affect quality of life, work productivity, and educational outcomes. According to the most recent Ottawa County Community Needs Assessment, 25% of adult residents had not visited a dentist within the past year. A scarcity of dental providers who accept Medicaid or work with uninsured individuals further complicates access to professional dental care services.

The Holland Free Health Clinic (HFHC) was founded in 2002 and has established itself as a lifeline for uninsured and underinsured residents by offering free health services provided by professionally licensed volunteers. The organization offers preventative dental care through cleaning and oral exams, and also offers restoration, extractions, oral surgery, periodontal care, and dentures.

HFHC recently launched its “Advancing Oral Health Equity” program, which seeks to address root causes of oral health disparities. Recognizing the importance of language in healthcare access, HFHC has Spanishspeaking staff and volunteers to ensure effective communication and care for Latino/Hispanic patients.

The organization also works hard to keep its wait list short, with most patients able to schedule an appointment within a few weeks. Other providers who work with uninsured/underinsured patients typically have a yearlong wait for appointments. Long wait times often lead to more complex health issues for patients.

CFHZ invested in the HFHC Advancing Oral Health Equity program through our responsive grant program. This funding assisted with the acquisition

of a second dental operatory system including a chair, delivery system and accessories. HFHC’s existing equipment was over 15 years old and required frequent repair.

The upgraded dental operatory system positions HFHC to offer a higher standard of care to their current clients, facilitate a more efficient workflow, and reduce patient wait times. It will also help HFHC meet its goal of expanding capacity and making the wait time for an appointment even shorter. The organization currently provides over 1,500 visits annually.

Jeff Compagner, Executive Director, said, “This grant comes at a pivotal time, addressing a growing need in the community and aiming to bridge the gap in access to essential dental care for low-income, uninsured, and minority populations—groups that are disproportionately affected by oral health disparities.”

COMMUNITY’S ENDOWMENT ALWAYS RELEVANT. TODAY, TOMORROW, FOREVER.

For over seventy years, CFHZ has been growing the Community’s Endowment to ensure the Holland/Zeeland area will always have philanthropic resources available to respond to our community’s most pressing needs and promising opportunities, even as they change. Gifts to the Community’s Endowment support our ability to make lasting positive change through grantmaking and efforts to strengthen the local nonprofit sector.

We recognize and thank the following donors who contributed to the Community’s Endowment between October 2023 and October 2024. We make every effort to ensure donor names are listed correctly. If you have a concern related to this list, please contact our office at 616-396-6590.

THINKING ABOUT STARTING A FUND?

Donors who give a cumulative total of $10,000 may choose to establish and name an Unrestricted or Field of Interest Fund as part of the Community’s Endowment.

YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE: EMPOWERING YOUTH LEADERS

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is a group of local high school students who are responsible for reviewing and recommending grants for programs that benefit area youth. The mission of the YAC is to empower young people, involve them in the community, and teach them about philanthropy while they serve as stewards through grantmaking. The unique perspectives that each member brings enriches the work of the YAC, fostering dynamic conversation and driving meaningful impact.

CFHZ’s YAC was established in 1991 through a challenge grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Over 200 area high school students have served on the YAC, developing leadership skills and igniting a passion for philanthropy. To date, the YAC has granted almost two million dollars to support Holland/Zeeland area youth!

YAC members meet at least once a month during the school year to review grant applications, visit local nonprofit organizations, and learn about community needs and philanthropy. This year alone, YAC members have demonstrated their commitment to community by:

• Packing nutritious sack lunches at Kids’ Food Basket.

• Representing the Holland/Zeeland area at a state-wide conference for youth advisory committees.

• Taking the QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Suicide Prevention Training with Mosaic Counseling.

• Sorting and cataloging books for Empowering Youth Global Connection.

• Representing YAC and CFHZ by volunteering at community-wide events hosted by Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holland, Tri-Cities Puentes Initiative, and the City of Holland.

Through hands-on involvement, grantmaking, and partnerships with local organizations, YAC members are learning the importance of service and philanthropy while actively shaping a brighter future for Holland/Zeeland. We are grateful for their leadership!

MIGUEL MENDOZA

Serving on YAC has helped me develop leadership skills such as time management and communication with the people around me. I strive to work alongside my peers to find a solution that can improve quality of life and provide opportunities. I am grateful for the chance to share my thoughts and ideas, allowing me to make a positive impact on my community.

YAC SPOTLIGHT

MARK AND KAREN PEARSON FUND

FOR MARK AND KAREN PEARSON, PHILANTHROPY IS A NATURAL EXTENSION OF THEIR STRONG COMMITMENTS TO YOUTH AND EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP, AND FAITH. Since settling in Holland in 2006, the Pearsons have become deeply involved in the community, sharing their time, talents, and resources in both personal and professional pursuits. Establishing a donor-advised fund at CFHZ helped them organize their giving and streamline support for causes and organizations they value.

Raised in Wisconsin and Minnesota respectively, Karen and Mark were influenced by families that prioritized service and generosity. Mark, whose father was a chemistry professor, grew up seeing the power of mentorship. His father’s commitment to helping students excel left an impression. “My father positively influenced a tremendous number of people,” he recalls. “I realized early on that I wanted to emulate him and contribute to my community.”

Karen and Mark met through a series of professional and personal connections while working in higher education. After their marriage, they considered where to build their family and found Holland to be a natural fit. A professor of mathematics at Hope College, Mark said, “Any community with a college is enriched by the energy and diversity it brings. West Michigan is unique in how deeply people care about the community and express that through generosity.”

Joshua, Karen, Mark, and Anna Pearson

As they settled into the Holland/Zeeland area, the Pearsons made their own commitments to the community. They were among the early supporters of Eighth Day Farm – a regenerative agriculture organization that seeks to connect people to the land and each other. Fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion is important, leading to investments in CultureWorks, I AM Academy, Hope Church, and Fellowship Reformed Church amongst others. Their support is not only financial but deeply relational, as Karen noted, “We give to organizations that align with our values. It’s a privilege to be a small part of their impact.”

Karen also plays an integral role in the local nonprofit ecosystem as President of Kids Hope USA, an organization that partners with churches and faith-friendly businesses and organizations to connect volunteer mentors with students in elementary and middle schools. Through these mentoring relationships, children gain a stable, supportive adult presence during crucial years for academic and emotional development. Karen and Mark both serve as mentors.

In 2022, the Pearsons established the Mark and Karen Pearson Fund. Motivated by a desire to support the community they cherish, they partnered with CFHZ. “We know the funds that flow through CFHZ are responsibly managed and advance the Foundation’s work,” said Karen. “We choose to house our charitable resources with CFHZ because this is the community where we’ve invested our time and energy. At the same time, we love the flexibility our DAF gives us to support organizations doing important work all over the world.”

Inspired by the values instilled during their childhoods, the Pearsons also saw this fund as a means of creating a legacy. Their children Anna and Joshua serve as legacy advisors, a role that introduces them to the principles of philanthropy. “Our children have shown, through their words and actions, a genuine interest in helping others. We see our DAF as another way to nurture their involvement in the community,” Mark shared. They include their children in discussions about grantmaking and, now that the children hold part-time jobs, encourage them to consider contributing to the fund as well.

For the Pearsons, giving back is a recognition of the opportunities they have received. “Our family has been blessed. It’s a joy to partner with CFHZ as we share some of those blessings and help provide others with stability and empowerment,” they said. “We plan to continue sharing our time, talents, and treasure to help provide others with hope, friendship and opportunities for a brighter future.”

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS

Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) are the fastest growing giving vehicle in the nation! When you contribute to your fund, you receive an immediate tax deduction and the flexibility to recommend grants to your favorite charitable organizations over time. A DAF at CFHZ also allows you the opportunity to engage your children as advisors during your lifetime and beyond, passing along your family legacy, values, and the joy of giving. We are grateful for the individuals and companies who choose to organize their giving through a fund at CFHZ, as their partnership supports our work in the community.

PROACTIVE GRANTS FOR HEALTHY CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

Our proactive grant program targets key priorities identified by local nonprofits and community leaders as essential for the Holland/Zeeland area to thrive. We awarded $145,000 to support efforts that provide local children with a consistent, caring adult presence. These initiatives pave the way for a brighter future where everyone in our community can reach their full potential.

SINGLE MOMM

AMOUNT AWARDED: $60,000 over two years

PURPOSE: Establishing Comprehensive Support for Single Moms

To continue the work that began last year as the Traverse City-based nonprofit replicates their model for the Holland/Zeeland area. Following intensive listening sessions, Single MOMM will offer parenting classes, resource navigation assistance, and mental health support services for single mothers.

ARBOR CIRCLE

AMOUNT AWARDED: $30,000

PURPOSE: Increasing Father Friendly Services in Ottawa County

To research, understand, and address the needs and barriers for engaging fathers and father figures, ultimately leading to the development of best practice tools, resources, and training to support them.

“We are so grateful for this opportunity to partner on an initiative specifically supporting fathers - the engagement of fathers and father figures is critical to ensuring families can thrive.”

LEIGH MOERDYKE, PROGRAM DIRECTOR OF ARBOR CIRCLE’S PREVENTION AND ADVOCACY DIVISION

RADIANT ROOTS DOULAS NETWORK

AMOUNT AWARDED: $25,000

PURPOSE: Doula Services and Community Birthing Classes

To expand doula services and community birthing classes in Ottawa County. Radiant Roots Doula Network helps new parents care for themselves and their babies and create a solid foundation for the months and years ahead.

MIDTOWN COUNSELING SERVICES

AMOUNT AWARDED: $30,000

PURPOSE: Family/Parental Engagement in On-Site School Counseling for HPS. To deepen family and parental engagement in on-site school counseling at Holland Public Schools by offering free counseling to family members of the student being counseled.

For seven years, Midtown Counseling Services has partnered with Holland Public Schools (HPS) to offer an Onsite School Counseling Program. Specialized youth therapists provide trauma-focused counseling to students during the school day, helping address the rising rates and complexity of mental health challenges facing our community’s youth.

Recent studies show that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are alarmingly prevalent across Ottawa County. ACEs include exposure to domestic violence, neglect, the incarceration of a parent, and exposure to substance abuse. Children exposed to ACEs are at higher risk of mental health issues, substance abuse, and challenges in academic and socio-emotional development.

ACEs also have an impact across generations. When individuals who were exposed to ACEs become parents themselves, they often struggle to create stable, supportive environments for their children.

Robert VanWyngarden of Midtown Counseling said, “Based on what we know about the cyclical nature of trauma, we felt called to leverage our existing studentcounselor relationships and reach out to students’ families. This expansion of our services is vital to creating healthier families and a healthier community, but we needed support to make it happen.”

CFHZ awarded $30,000 to support Midtown as they launched their Family/Parental Engagement in Onsite Counseling for Holland Public Schools. Midtown Counseling

Services’ work aligns directly with our proactive grant priority of increasing the consistency of a healthy parent or other caring adult relationship in kids’ lives by providing trauma-focused care to students and their family members. Extending their services to students’ parents and caregivers helps mitigate the long-term effects of ACEs and fosters physically and emotionally safe and stable environments for local children.

With this grant, Midtown Counseling Services will offer free counseling for family members of students already receiving support, as well as parenting classes. These classes, led by Midtown counselors, include options for Spanish-speaking parents, ensuring that language is not a barrier. In addition, Midtown will introduce art therapy and life skills groups, which will allow students and caregivers to practice skills together, from cooking to gardening, in a therapeutic setting. These activities offer families opportunities to build strong, supportive bonds, fostering mutual understanding and resilience through shared experiences.

“During my tenure at HPS, mental health support for our students has been our greatest need,” shared Nick Cassidy, Superintendent. “Midtown’s presence in our schools serves as a vital conduit for reaching parents and caregivers, offering them the support and resources they need to foster positive relationships with their children, and fortifying and healing families.”

For good. For ever.
