Infinite potential. Boundless optimism. Endless opportunity. Year after year, the partners who make up the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo come together to make a difference. It’s a journey that began more than 94 years ago and is still going strong today. With your help, we will continue to empower Generosity for Generations, looking to the future but never forgetting the forward-thinking individuals who have brought us to this very moment. Our approach to giving continues to grow and evolve over time. And we are proud to say —the best is yet to come.

THE LEWIS FAMILY FOUNDATION The son of two teachers, Daniel Lewis was taught that education is the great equalizer. Sitting in his New York City office, the successful investor talks passionately about his love for his hometown, the importance of giving back through the gift of education and how he will share that legacy with his young son. In fact, Daniel set up the Lewis Family “The Community Foundation gives me a Foundation to make decisions together with direct line to the needs of Western New York his parents and sister about how to give back and creates choices for my giving. Plus, to their hometown. it’s a great outsourcing tool that saves me infrastructure, time and money.” “We all live in separate cities, and one of the things that we talk about at the end Right now, the Lewis Family believes that of every year is what we have seen the best chance we all have to succeed or been introduced to that inspired us is through education and they are supporting and want to give to collectively,” said Daniel. the Say Yes Buffalo initiative, believing that it “It’s a great family activity.” will create hopeful change in our community. When Daniel decided to focus his giving on his hometown, he felt strongly about finding a foundation based in Buffalo.

“You can’t lose by sending a child to school and giving them an opportunity,” Daniel emphasized.

AGNES CLARKE BROWN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Agnes Clarke Brown’s grandsons remember that she could still kick and touch the ceiling in her mid-80’s. This feisty, strong and philanthropic woman, who lived to be 97, created a powerful legacy of education that has not only deeply shaped generations of her own family, but generations of families in her beloved hometown of Newfane, New York, as well. Born in 1894, Agnes started working at the age of 16 to support her family. She was married on her 20th birthday and gave birth to two sons in the years that followed. Never able to seek a formal education herself, she made it her mission to provide her sons with an excellent education. Both went on to change lives in ways Agnes probably never dreamed possible: one as a world-renowned surgeon and the other as a senior executive at the State Department. “Her determination to educate her sons was transformational for them because they both capitalized on their education and had two very interesting and successful careers,” reminisces Colin Brown, Agnes’ grandson.

LEFT TO RIGHT: Three generations of family: KC, Keirn and Clarke Brown

“As a consequence, my brother and I grew up with that same expectation—that you will do college preparatory classes and you will go to college and, indeed, both of us have gone on to earn graduate degrees.” When it came time to honor Agnes’ legacy, her sons agreed it was important to keep connected to the deep family roots in Newfane and pay tribute to her passion for education. A scholarship was set up to send one Newfane High School graduate to college each year, covering the costs of a four-year education. Now that her sons have both passed, Agnes’ grandchildren continue to carry on the tradition by staying involved in the scholarship fund.

THE BELL FUND TRUST In the 1940s and 1950s, Bell Aerospace was attracting bright, creative, cutting edge talent to Western New York to chart the course of our nation’s aviation history. Today, nearly 40 years after the company was sold to an out-of-town buyer, the Bell Fund is continuing to give back to our community. “Bell Aerospace’s leaders, including my father [former CEO] felt strongly about attracting, growing and keeping talented young people in Buffalo,” said Bell Fund trustee William G. Gisel Jr. “The Bell Fund allows us to preserve the legacy of an influential company in Western New York history while helping future generations.” In 1960, the Bell Fund was the first private foundation to transfer its assets to the Community Foundation to ensure that its objectives would always be met and that Bell Aerospace, regardless of its location, would continue to support Western New York. The trustees, including Charles Kreiner, a long-time Bell Aerospace employee, and Mr. Gisel, determine where grants are awarded each year and the Community Foundation provides the oversight of investments, along with the infrastructure to meet the trustees’ charitable objectives. “We’ve asked that the Community Foundation educate us on the organizations making a difference in Western New York.

The Community Foundation team has a finger on the pulse of our community, and their advice has been invaluable to us as we make decisions about awarding grants,” said Mr. Gisel. Speaking about their objectives for the fund, Mr. Kreiner added, “We want to ensure that organizations that educate our young people on the region’s rich aviation history, like the Niagara Aerospace Museum, are around for generations to come.”

BUFFALO SEMINARY There are generations of Buffalo Seminary women making a positive impact around the world right this very minute. When it comes to longevity and a commitment to our community, Buffalo Seminary and the Community Foundation are ideal partners. In fact, the partnership began 90 years ago when the all girls college-preparatory school’s Graduates Association (now Alumnae Association) established the first scholarship fund at the Community Foundation in 1924. In 2011, the Buffalo Seminary Board of Trustees decided to take the school’s partnership with the Community Foundation to the next level by asking the Community Foundation to manage its endowment funds to maximize the investments. It was a decision that the Board of Trustees did not take lightly. “In the end, two things stood out to us about the Community Foundation. Firstly, our donors were impressed by how the funds are managed, and secondly, the overall performance of the Community Foundation’s investment strategy. The superior investment won the day when it came time to make a final decision,” said Board of Trustees Chair, David Knauss. “We also recognized tremendous value in the credibility of the Community Foundation. Those who know it respect it, and recognize the Community Foundation is a credible place to keep funds. That’s important as we look to increase our endowment,” said Jody Douglass, Head of School.

Buffalo Seminary relies on the Community Foundation to watch over its endowment so its team can focus on educating young women. “By letting the Community Foundation do what they do best, managing endowments, we are able to do what we do best— ensuring our young women are empowered to shape the world,” said Ms. Douglass.

MR. AND MRS. GEORGE F. RAND FUND In 1919, George F. Rand, President of Marine Midland Bank, asked his attorney Edward H. Letchworth to visit Cleveland to learn about its community foundation. George was inspired by the concept of a community foundation that would bring together individuals with various charitable interests to collectively address the needs of the community, and brought it home to his beloved Buffalo. But he likely didn’t envision how that community foundation would evolve through the generations — or did he? “I really don’t know what motivated Big George except for his love of Buffalo and his community spirit, and that translated to my father and then to me,” said Calvin Rand, grandson of George F. Rand. George’s grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, many of whom are still involved in charitable giving through the Community Foundation today, credit George’s vision, as well as his son’s decision to start the first endowment at the Community Foundation after George and his wife died tragically in a plane crash. By carrying on George’s wishes with the creation of the Mr. and Mrs. George F. Rand Fund, his son made it possible for hundreds of others to give back in the same way. The good the Rand family has done for our community is immeasurable.

It’s paramount to George’s family that the concept he envisioned, and trusted in, will live on for generations. His fund is still relevant today, and will continue to be for generations to come, through its support of the changing needs in our community.

“Hopefully, 90 years from now, my great-grandchildren will be sitting here talking about how my great grandfather’s vision became real in 1919,” said Jayne Rand, great-granddaughter of George F. Rand. Fourth and third generation members of the Rand family: Jayne and Calvin

CHANGE MAKERS The Community Foundation is grateful for the opportunity to serve clients who care about making Western New York a better region for all. Some of these clients have established endowment funds to address the changing needs of the community over time. George Rand was the first change maker. Today, more than 100 change makers, listed on the subsequent pages, have asked the Community Foundation to address those changing needs in their name forever by establishing an endowment fund for perpetual support. The changing needs designation ensures that their endowment will always be relevant and allows us to engage the community in co-creating shared solutions. Those needs are identified through thoughtful and comprehensive research and are carefully woven into the Community Foundation’s strategic plan. In 2007, the Board of Directors selected four community goals on which to focus: Improve educational achievement for low-income students; Increase racial/ ethnic equity; Enhance and leverage significant natural resources; and Strengthen the region as a center for architecture, arts, and culture. Thanks to the visionaries listed below, the Community Foundation is driving change in these areas through the initiatives highlighted on pages 18–27.

“When Say Yes launched I said, Yes, here we go! Yes to everything. Yes, you can go to college. Yes, you can accomplish your dreams. Yes, you can be a role model.” - JAMES GRICE, FATHER OF A SAY YES BUFFALO STUDENT AT MEDAILLE COLLEGE -

In 2013, thanks to the support of our generous Angel Donors who have contributed more than $19 million, almost 1,000 students headed off to college. Many of those students wouldn’t have had that opportunity without the Say Yes Buffalo partnership. While the driving force behind Say Yes Buffalo is a universal scholarship program, financial aid for college is just one component of the effort, which seeks to remove all barriers to educational success. To address the academic, health and behavioral challenges our students face, Say Yes Buffalo and its partners are putting people and programs run by respected community-based organizations directly into Buffalo Public School buildings. To guide this work, Say Yes Buffalo created and launched a Student Management System — the first of its kind to be rolled out to a public school district in the nation. This comprehensive system tracks attendance, health, behavioral and academic indicators based on input from parents, students, school counselors, and teachers to identify whether students are on track academically. If they are not, the system helps connect students to the different supports and services available to put them back on track. Here’s a look at the other Say Yes Buffalo successes in 2013 by the numbers:

Samantha and 1,000 other high school students in Buffalo participated in the Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative’s “Success Looks Like Me” program in 2013. The “pay it forward” initiative is the product of a dedicated council of professionals of color who strive to inspire positive change and expand the minds of low-income youth of color via access to people, places and experiences. Through “Success Looks Like Me,” students are exposed to the possibilities of different careers and career paths. Guest speakers have included Michael Morgan, conductor of the Oakland East Bay Symphony, and Steve Finch, Hutch Tech graduate and the plant manager of the General Motors Tonawanda Powertrain Plant. Both emphasized to the students that it is important to think long-term and be confident in yourself and your ability to create your own path to success. learning by experiencing Washington DC as a living classroom. During the 2013 trip, 12 students were given access to the people, processes, and places that make the nation’s capital so unique. Additionally, the Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative’s council is engaging young professionals as part of its Emerging Philanthropists of Color Initiative. These young, energetic entrepreneurial individuals are expanding their professional network and learning how to be positive role models and philanthropists in our community. These experiences wouldn’t be possible without the Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative’s generous donors who helped achieve major milestones in 2013, including reaching the endowment challenge goal and building the endowment to almost $500,000. This achievement solidifies the Communities of Giving Legacy Initative’s future to continue to inspire and create life-changing experiences for our youth of color.

MAKING OUR COMMUNITY RICH WITH CULTURAL COLOR FUND FOR THE ARTS MEMBERS

FUND FOR THE ARTS Passing on a love of arts doesn’t just happen from parent to child. It takes an entire community to cultivate an appreciation for culture. It’s critical that organizations and funders in the community come together to provide support to protect our region’s cultural gems. The Fund for the Arts addresses this need by bringing together Western New York arts funders to strengthen our essential arts and cultural sector. For nearly a decade, representatives from family, private and corporate foundations have been meeting regularly to assess the needs of our arts community and determine how they can work together to develop and fund capacity building. Since 2005, more than $2.2 million has been directed to sector-wide arts needs in our community through the Fund for the Arts, including the formation of the Arts Services Initiative of Western New York (ASI), which brings together organizations and individual artists to strengthen our arts community through collaborations, education and advocacy. In 2013, to give children in the community the opportunity for educational enrichment through arts, funds were directed by the Fund for the Arts to support the Arts Partners for Learning (APL). The APL, an initiative of Young Audiences, takes best practices from across the country to build capacity for arts education in the eight

counties of Western New York to benefit children in kindergarten through high school. ASI and APL are just two of the six sector-wide organizations that participated in two successful cultural summits held in 2013. The quarterly summits, which were made possible by the Fund for the Arts, brought together local arts and cultural networks from the six organizations to learn more about each other, exchange ideas and find ways to work together to build on strengths and diminish weaknesses. Representatives from arts groups throughout Western New York attended the summits. Participants deemed the summits such a success that more are planned in 2014 to build on the momentum of growing arts and cultural partnerships throughout our region.

WESTERN NEW YORK ENVIRONMENTAL ALLIANCE Envision the power and influence of Niagara Falls, one of our region’s greatest natural resources. Picture the lakes, rivers and streams that come together to create that power and beauty. It is a perfect analogy for the Western New York Environmental Alliance. The Alliance is a group of nearly 100 environmental organizations in Western New York, brought together by the Community Foundation, to act as a powerful advocate for our region’s environment.

The Waste and Pollution Working Group unveiled an eye-opening Mapping Waste Report that received major media attention and created an important opportunity to educate politicians on a local and national level. The report, thought to be the most comprehensive look at hazardous waste sites ever conducted in Western New York, detailed more than 1,000 waste sites in Erie, Niagara and Cattaraugus counties.

The 2013 Action Agenda, developed and approved by Alliance members, served as a road map for those advocacy efforts through nine working groups. The Growing Working Group focused on educating Erie County residents and leaders about the need for a Food Policy Council to create a stronger connection between local food producers and consumers to address issues such as obesity, access to fresh food and nutrition in schools. The work was deemed a success when the Food Policy Council of Buffalo & Erie County was established in May under the Erie County Board of Health.

in partnership with the Community Foundation, also introduced a new community information texting tool called Grow 716, allowing Western New York Environmental Alliance member organizations to interact directly with our community. Visit grow716.org to see our current campaigns and results. Grow 716 was made possible through a matching grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, a national, private foundation that has provided funding to Western New York through the Community Foundation three times in the past five years.

OUR APPROACH TO CHARITABLE INVESTMENTS The Community Foundation’s Investment Committee has oversight of nearly $300 million in charitable assets. Members of the committee are specifically recruited because of their knowledge of investments. They receive advice throughout the year from our independent investment consultant, Colonial Consulting, Inc., who specializes in large endowment funds. Together they work to allocate the charitable assets entrusted to the Community Foundation’s care into a highly diversified mix of global equities, fixed income and alternative investment strategies, which include more than 29 different investment management organizations pursuing strategies within 13 different asset classes. Within each asset class, the Community Foundation seeks to utilize world-class investment managers who are able to outperform appropriate target market benchmarks over long periods.

How it works: This endowment was established with $2.1 million in 1978 through a legacy gift (bequest) to the Community Foundation from a parent in honor of his son, who died tragically as a young man. Today, decades after both father and son have passed on, the initial gift has grown to $6.9 million and has paid out $7.2 million in grants to the organizations they cared about. Their fund will continue to honor this family’s charitable giving legacy by making grants to their favorite organizations in their name forever. After hosting a historic Needs Forum in 2012 to gauge the challenges facing residents when it comes to health, arts and culture, education and business, the Wyoming Foundation turned conversation into action to address those challenges. Key community leaders began working together on solutions to build an education-to-jobs pipeline and attract more people to the county’s arts and cultural gems.

NIAGARA AREA FOUNDATION Founded in 2000 as a geographic division of the Community Foundation, the Niagara Area Foundation was the first countywide initiative created to connect people, ideas and resources to improve lives in Niagara County. An engaged and active volunteer team with roots in Niagara County leads the Niagara Area Foundation, which is dedicated to understanding critical needs in the community and finding long-term sustainable solutions to local needs. In fact, more than $1 million has been awarded through the Niagara Area Foundation to benefit Niagara County since the Foundation was formed. In 2010, the Niagara Area Foundation launched an initiative to improve early childhood education. Federal Reserve Bank studies have shown that investing in quality childcare for young children helps to prevent them from experiencing poverty later in life. This research estimates that for every dollar invested in quality childcare, $17 are returned to the community through the productivity of those children once they reach adulthood. For this reason, the Niagara Area Foundation focused its efforts on giving childcare providers the skills and training needed to positively impact early childhood development. By bringing key partners to the table, including Niagara University, the United Way of Greater Niagara, the Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation and the Grigg-Lewis Foundation, the Niagara County Early Child Care Quality Improvement Project (QIP) was created. To date, more than 700 children have benefitted from enriched care through QIP. Hundreds of childcare providers participated in skills training, and more than 87 teachers and directors completed a 45-hour professional development certificate program, resulting in measurable quality improvements in 30 licensed childcare centers in Niagara County. 40

|

After three successful years, the QIP program has been adopted into Niagara University’s curriculum. The University has taken responsibility for training, educating and mentoring childcare providers and the program has been fully funded for three additional years to embark on the next phase, which includes extending the project into infant and toddler classrooms. If you would like to learn more about the Niagara Area Foundation, please contact Holly Mergenhagen, Esq. at (716) 852-2857, ext. 207.

A doctor who spent his lifetime caring for the medical needs of a small town left his estate to the Community Foundation to establish a fund to provide for the education of its residents after his lifetime. His original gift of $3 million has grown over 20 years to $6.8 million and currently provides almost $250,000 annually to scholarships for students from his hometown seeking a college education.
