Generosity on repeat.

In 1919, American soldiers were returning from World War I, prohibition was adopted and dial telephones were introduced. That same year, George F. Rand Sr., President of Marine Trust Co., asked his attorney, Edward H. Letchworth, to visit the first community foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. After that trip, George Sr. recognized the unique role a community foundation could play to enable families, including his own, to give back for generations to come. George Sr. and his wife had four children, including George Jr. Upon the passing of his parents, George Jr. carried on his father’s wishes by establishing the Buffalo Foundation, now the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, and creating the first endowment to address the changing needs of this community. Following in his father’s footsteps, George Jr. became president of Marine Midland Corporation. He also served as Director of the Buffalo Foundation. George Jr. and his wife, Isabel, had three children, including Calvin, who went on to carry on his family’s generosity in many ways – including founding the Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Calvin’s brother, George III, who also worked at Marine Midland before forming Rand Capital Corp in the 1960s, supported many local organizations, including the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. George III and his wife had six children, including Jayne. “My father did a great deal to carry on our family’s legacy,” said Jayne Rand about the late George III. “As busy as he was in his professional life, giving back was just always something he did and something he assumed his children would do too.” Jayne is now the fourth generation of the Rand family who is committed to giving through the Community Foundation. She is a member of the Community Foundation’s Legacy Society, which acknowledges individuals who have committed to supporting the community in the future through a planned gift. Jayne is also a member of the 21st Century Fund and a leader on its steering committee.

Building a legacy.

If Sylvia Coles could describe her husband’s character in one word, it would be perseverance. Born at a time when breaking through race barriers in certain careers was discouraged, Robert Traynham Coles overcame many obstacles to become a well-known architect who continues to make his mark on Western New York today.

Robert attended Buffalo Technical High School, where he enrolled in a course called Building Design. “I took to it like a duck takes to water,” Robert recalled. He felt that architecture was his calling, but his teacher told him it would be a waste of time to pursue because there were no African American architects.

Growing up in the Cold Springs area on the east side of Buffalo, Robert’s family was one of the only African American families in the neighborhood. His father worked for the United States Postal Service and his mother was a homemaker.

Instead of taking his teacher’s advice, Robert became even more motivated to follow his dream and blaze a trail for others. “I decided that I would become an architect and the best darn architect I could,” he said.

Soon after, Robert heard about Edward H. Moeller, who, through the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, had established scholarships for Western New Yorkers who wanted to study architecture. Robert was awarded the scholarship, which he put toward earning his degree at the University of Minnesota. Robert met and married Sylvia and the couple headed to Cambridge, Massachusetts, so Robert could pursue his post-graduate degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His career began to take shape, with his wife and their two children by his side. They found themselves back

Now both approaching 90, Robert and Sylvia wanted another way to leave their mark on Western New York. “We have more resources than we need to take care of ourselves and decided we wanted to give something back,” Sylvia said. The Coles’ attorney suggested they look at the Community Foundation, which manages the charitable legacies of hundreds of generous individuals.

In addition to designing their own house on Humboldt Parkway in Buffalo, which is now a designated historic landmark, Robert Coles went on to design several other buildings in Western New York, including University at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena. Robert and Sylvia made plans to establish a scholarship fund that will benefit African American and other students of color looking to pursue a career in architecture. “We hope this scholarship will give them the means to implement their plan, just as a scholarship did for me,” said Robert. The Coles’ legacy of giving will now come full circle.

The gift of family. For many Western New York families, generosity seems to be in their DNA, passed on from one generation to the next. From a young age, Carl Montante says he learned from his parents to give what he could. He and his wife, Carol, passed that on to their four children, Laura, Carl Jr., Michael and Tim. The siblings saw their parents give back in many forms, from purchasing TVs for local workers during the holidays to supporting local organizations during tough times. “We grew up knowing that you give back to your community,” said Michael. “It’s always been part of our lives.”

They have also engrained a culture of caring at their family-owned company by giving employees opportunities to allocate funding and to take time off to volunteer. Now that Carol and Carl’s 10 grandchildren are young adults, the next Montante generation is making its mark. The cousins shared a childhood filled with volunteering at charity events, delivering clothes to those less fortunate and seeing their parents and grandparents step up to help whenever they saw a need. “At this point, giving back just comes naturally,” said Megan Montante, a recent college graduate. This youngest generation also emphasizes their desire to pay it forward. “As soon as my kids can walk, I’m going to get them involved in giving back,” said Zak Zaepfel, Laura’s son, who is a recent high school graduate. “I hope when they are older, it is just a part of their culture and lifestyle.” To help meet their charitable goals, the Montantes established the Carol & Carl Montante Fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.

“The Community Foundation has made things easy for us,” said Carl. “We do not have to worry about investing the money or the technical aspects of having your own private foundation.” “And what the Community Foundation is doing to teach our children about philanthropy is also very helpful,” added Michael. “It is a big part of how we hope to pass on this legacy of giving. We are now approaching it with a bit more structure, as opposed to just learning it as we go.” And just what is the secret for making sure generosity remains in the family’s DNA? The Montantes unanimously agree that it is doing meaningful things together as a family. “Just be with the ones you love and do good things for other people,” said Michael. Megan agreed, “When you bring your kids along with you, you show them the good that you can bring to others.”

A world of giving. Born in Buffalo, Norman E. Mack II was a world traveler who set up residences in various East Coast cities during his lifetime. But no matter where he was, or from where he was sending postcards, he always stayed connected to Buffalo. Norman was the grandson of the founder of the Buffalo Times, a popular local morning newspaper in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Growing up in Buffalo, Norman benefitted from his family’s success and enjoyed purchasing houses, fixing them up and reselling them with his partner, Bill Gurney. “He made the homes and the neighborhoods better than they were when he found them, which parallels nicely in why he left a charitable legacy,” said Charles (Chuck) F. Kreiner Jr., Norman’s personal friend and financial advisor.

When Norman passed away in 2011, he left a good portion of his estate to organizations that were important to him. Deciding what to do with the funds to make a transformational impact on our community was left up to Chuck and James (Jim) M. Wadsworth, Norman’s attorney and cousin.

The Community Foundation identified additional funding for the project through its network of partners and clients, and the collaboration has already made a significant impact on the environment.

Mack II Fund at the Community Foundation, it was a way to carry on his name.” In addition to honoring Norman’s legacy by continuing his annual donations to the organizations that were most important to him, Chuck and Jim looked for other meaningful ways to carry out Norman’s wishes. “Norman was very supportive of community activities,” Jim said. “He liked the idea of supporting efforts that were committed to advancing Buffalo.” Norman’s gift was used to help transform an important waterway, launching a massive

Jim and Chuck believe that Norman would feel his funds have been put to very good use. “This is a great example of the power of collective impact through the Community Foundation,” Chuck said. “Norman told me, ‘I want you to use the money at the Community Foundation for the betterment of this community and the people in it.’ So that is exactly what we are doing while carrying on his name and his philanthropy.”

Motherly love. Every December, about 2,500 middle and high school-aged youth in Western New York dress up and hit the dance floor for a good cause. Even more incredible than the success of this annual event is the woman behind it: Maria M. Love, the social work pioneer who started the Charity Ball more than 115 years ago. A prominent Buffalonian in the 19th century and early part of the 20th century, Maria M. Love never married or had children. She devoted her entire life to helping others. “Maria is credited for starting the first crèche or day care center in the United States in 1881,” said Mary Bacon, President 10C

of the Maria M. Love Convalescent Fund Board. “She realized there was a need for child care for working moms in the city of Buffalo and then she would go a step further by inviting the moms in for tea when they picked up their children so she could teach them parenting skills.” To support convalescent respite care for mothers and their children, Maria organized a group of women in 1903 who, in turn, created the first Charity Ball. Today, the organization uses the proceeds from the Charity Ball to assist individuals who are residents of Erie County and have medical conditions by providing

up to $300 that can be used for something simple, but life-changing, like a pair of eyeglasses or to cover time off from work for treatments at Roswell Park.

At her death in 1975, a widow gifted $400,000 to the Community Foundation to create a fund as a tribute to her beloved late husband. Originally from Germany, the couple made Buffalo their home and she wished to take care of their adopted community in perpetuity. By the end of 2018, the fund had grown to $1.3 million and had granted out $1.8 million to support the changing needs of our community in their name.

Wyoming Foundation In 1974, the Wyoming Foundation was established by Dr. James MacCallum to improve the quality of life for Wyoming County residents. Today, 45 years later, the Wyoming Foundation continues to actively support a wide variety of cultural, educational and human services organizations. Twelve years ago, it became a division of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo in order to expand its capacity and better serve Wyoming County residents. As a community foundation, it is important that we recognize the solutions to our challenges are as unique as the community we serve. To facilitate long-term transformative change in our region, the Community Foundation for Greater Buﬀalo prioritizes its leadership work through a strategic planning process led by its Board of Directors. The process includes analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, as well as resident input to determine community goals. ST R E N GT H E N T H E R EG I O N A S A C E NT E R FO R A RC H IT EC T U R E , A R T S A N D CU LT U R E Our region’s arts and culture sector enhances the quality of life in our community and boosts our local economy. Every dollar invested in the arts returns nearly $10 in economic impact.

Helping our community soar. Achieving racial equity means more people purchasing homes, buying groceries, eating at restaurants and supporting the cultural assets in our region. Everyone will beneﬁt when all residents have the opportunity to learn, work and contribute to a healthy, thriving and prosperous community. Recognizing the need to change policies, practices and procedures that hold us back from achieving racial equity, in 2015 the Community Foundation brought together civic leaders from across sectors to form the Greater Buﬀalo Racial Equity Roundtable. In consultation with the community, the Roundtable has developed a nine-point agenda, rooted in data, to advance racial equity in our community. 4M

Below are a few of the recent accomplishments the Roundtable’s coalitions have achieved: • The Business Leaders Task Force, a group of 12 major employers, funded the Buffalo Purchasing Initiative pilot to explore ways to build community and capacity around inclusive procurement practices to increase spending with businesses owned by people of color. • By the end of 2018, more than 1,200 individuals representing 80 organizations participated in Racial Equity Impact Analysis Training. This training offers organizations a tool they can use to insert a racial equity lens into decisionmaking processes. Additionally, regular sessions are held for designated coaches at organizations to provide support and further peer learning after the training. • The Boys and Young Men of Color Coalition celebrated the first graduating class of Breaking Barriers. This group of young men of color is creating and strengthening a unified voice that

advocates for social justice, racial equity and policy change. In partnership with Say Yes Buffalo, the first Breaking Barriers graduates are mentoring the second class of young men. • With a goal of improving reentry success and recognizing that reducing Erie County’s high rate of recidivism will reduce taxpayer costs, The Reentry Coalition announced plans to establish a reentry center for Erie County next door to the Erie County Holding Center in cooperation with the Erie County Department of Mental Health and the Erie County Sheriff ’s Office. The Racial Equity Roundtable and its more than 220 partners are committed to making Buffalo a better place for future generations by creating an expanded economy.

Every child should have the opportunity to learn and ﬂourish in high quality schools that help discover and nurture their potential. In fact, the leading indicator of economic health for a region is the level of education of its residents. Rewind back to 2012 when the high school graduation rate for Buﬀalo city schools was 49 percent – less than half. School days were

to educational success, Say Yes Buﬀalo has built support services including mobile health clinics, mental health services at the schools, legal clinics, summer camps, paid internships and community schools that are open on weekends for families. Supports are also in place to help students with the transition from high school to college.

The dismal graduation rate led the Community Foundation to broker an unprecedented partnership that included business, government and nonproﬁt leaders, which resulted in Buﬀalo being chosen as a Say Yes city.

This designation came with $15 million and technical assistance from Say Yes to Education – a national organization committed to helping communities develop a pathway of milestones to post-secondary readiness. Say Yes Buffalo is a game-changer for public education in the city of Buffalo. Recognizing that students need more than just financial assistance to climb the ladder

With more than 200 partners actively engaged in Say Yes Buffalo, the high school graduation rate in Buffalo has increased by 16 percentage points and the postsecondary enrollment rate has increased by 10 percentage points. Say Yes Buffalo has raised nearly $30 million to cover the first 10 years of scholarships and almost $40 million of a $100 million endowment campaign that will fund the scholarships forever. More importantly, Say Yes Buffalo scholars are earning their post-secondary diplomas, building successful careers at nonprofits and corporations, working on graduate degrees and contributing to making our region a more vibrant place to live.

Mrs. Griffin lives with her daughter and two grandchildren in her home in Buffalo’s University District. Noticing the peeling paint on her home, she became concerned that it could cause her grandchildren to be lead poisoned. She had reason to be concerned as many children have lost valuable I.Q. points after being poisoned by lead-based paint in older homes built before 1978. Lead exposure comes largely from lead dust and chips from old windows, doors, porches and exteriors. Should Mrs. Griffin’s grandchildren be lead poisoned, the consequences are severe. Children with elevated blood lead levels are seven times more likely to drop out of school than children without lead poisoning. Fortunately, we can prevent lead poisoning. Mrs. Griffin worked hard her entire life driving a school bus in Buffalo and despite that, she could not afford the $18,000 it would take to reduce the lead hazards in her home. Thanks to the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI), her home was remediated, protecting her grandchildren from lead exposure and maintaining the value of her home for the future. Convened locally by the Community Foundation, GHHI is a public-private partnership between federal, state and local governments with local nonprofits, as well as national and local philanthropy. Based on models from around

the country, Buffalo’s GHHI coordinates funding sources and programs for weatherization, lead hazard control and other home health and safety interventions in homes owned by lowincome families. GHHI is supported by a $2 million grant from Empire State Development, and every dollar is matched by funds from public and private sources. Without GHHI, Mrs. Griffin’s grandchildren would be at risk for lead poisoning. While GHHI offers a house-by-house approach, the Community Foundation is striving for policy change that would protect thousands of young children across Buffalo and Erie County. In 2018, the Community Foundation and its many partners released the Lead Action Plan with recommendations to eliminate lead exposure. The data shows that 80% of lead poisoning occurs in rental singles and doubles owned by 18,000 landlords – most of whom live in Western New York, often in the same neighborhoods as their rental properties. Now a broad cross-section of leaders from government, higher education, philanthropy, healthcare and grassroots organizations, as well as faith traditions led by the Community Foundation are working together to implement the recommendations from the Lead Action Plan to make homes – like Mrs. Griffin’s – safer for future generations.

Whether you catch a live performance at a local theater, roam through a gallery brimming with possibilities and pops of color or step back in time at a historic landmark, there is no limit to the ways that arts, architecture and culture continue to spark our creativity and bring us together. Western New York’s arts and culture sector creates more than 10,000 jobs and has resulted in more than $350 million in total economic impact. 10M

The Fund for the Arts was established nearly 15 years ago by a group of funders to mitigate the impact of county budget cuts. Today, its mission has evolved to meet the needs of the sector and almost $3 million of collaborative funding has been provided to support various arts and cultural initiatives. From lessons in giving back to tips for buying your ﬁrst home to witnessing democracy in action in Washington, D.C., the Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative® (CGLI) is working diligently to build opportunities across generations within communities of color. Understanding it is important to start young, the CGLI created The Young Philanthropists program to lead teenagers on a path of deeper understanding of what philanthropy is and how they can build wealth throughout their life while still giving back in a meaningful way.

The program includes lessons on giving and allows the participants to hear pitches from youth-focused agencies and provide grants to organizations making an impact in their interest areas. The idea is that these youth will then be mentored and moved into the Emerging Philanthropists of Color® (EPC) program. This giving circle for young professionals of color includes a grant process, as well as a unique networking opportunity for its members. Meetings are designed to include personal and professional development opportunities, including wealth building and investments. The CGLI understands that it is sometimes who you know and not just what you know and its Council Members continue to mentor the EPC members and bring them into leadership roles in our community to ensure the learning is lifelong. Additional programs that support this pipeline of growth include the Close Up trip to Washington, D.C., where local teens

experience government and democracy in action through the Close Up Foundation. Recognizing a need to strengthen organizations that support communities of color, the CGLI created the Philanthropies of Color Network. This network has been so well received that it will be expanded in 2019 to include more organizations. Funding for the CGLI will be boosted this year by a generous donor’s match for the CGLI endowment. When $300,000 is raised, an additional $150,000 will be given by the donor. The endowment provides a sustainable source of long-term funding to ensure the CGLI’s commitment to communities of color continues. Creating access, collaboration, capacity and connections at every stage of life will continue to grow the collective impact of communities of color.

Sue, who is a retired partner of Kavinoky and Cook, embodies Gordon’s legacy of service. Her professional accomplishments would fill this page – including being the first woman to be elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trusts and Estates. Sue has also made an indelible mark in our community through her numerous volunteer roles, especially her commitment to causes that support women. Established in 2013, this award recognizes a professional advisor who represents the Community Foundation’s mission to drive positive change in our community. The award’s namesake and first recipient, Gordon R. Gross, Esq., passed away in early 2019. Gordon was a longtime friend, former Board Chair, renowned civic leader and passionate advocate for our community and the Community Foundation.

Our Approach to Charitable Investments For 100 years, the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo’s primary goal has been to maximize charitable assets for the benefit of the Western New York region and beyond. The Community Foundation’s Investment Committee has oversight of more than $400 million in charitable assets. Members of the Committee are specifically recruited because of their knowledge of investments. They receive advice throughout the year from our independent investment consulting firm Colonial Consulting, LLC, which specializes in advising large endowments and foundations nationwide. Together, they work to allocate the charitable assets entrusted to the Community Foundation’s care into a highly diversified mix of global equities, fixed income and alternative investment strategies. This includes 52 different investment management organizations pursuing strategies within 13 different asset classes. Within each asset class, the Community Foundation seeks to utilize world-class investment managers with the goal of outperforming appropriate target market benchmarks over long periods. The Committee remains focused on maintaining a prudent strategy, consistently executed.

This endowment was established with $2.1 million in 1978 through a legacy gift (bequest) to the Community Foundation from a parent in honor of his son who died tragically as a young man. Today, decades after both father and son have passed on, the initial gift has more than tripled to $6.7 million, all while giving $8.6 million in grants to the organizations they cared about. Their fund will continue to honor this family’s charitable giving legacy by making grants to their favorite organizations in their name, forever.
