2022-2023 TOP STORIES | CFCC CAREER ACADEMY

Learning through exploration: 224 middle school students from New Hanover and Pender counties gained first-hand job training experience in CFCC’s top-ranked programs. “By engaging middle school students in career exploration, we can begin to foster interests, skills, and abilities and provide students with a roadmap for future success.” —CFCC President Jim Morton

CFCC STUDENTS | 2022-2023 TOP STORIES CFCC STUDENT’S ARTWORK SELECTED FOR NC MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBIT After graduating from Ashley High School in 2021, Kennedy McAnally began researching design schools. She was excited to discover that CFCC offers a graphic design program that was precisely what she wanted. “I love the classes, and I love the instructors. They have pushed me, which is what I needed. They will work with you 100% of the time because they want to help you improve and succeed.” During McAnally’s first semester, CFCC Fine Arts Instructor Sharon WozniakSpencer recognized her talent and encouraged her to submit one of her works to the North Carolina Museum of Art for the “Thinking through Making” college exhibition which featured student work that demonstrated the steps to a finished piece. Students submitted sketches, studies, or failed attempts at paintings, drawings, or sculptures. The judges critiqued the artist’s process from conceptualization through completion. McAnally submitted a video of her graphic design in progress. The Museum selected her work as one of eight pieces to be displayed as part of the exhibition. “We were told to make something abstract, and what’s more abstract than a scream to release negativity from your body? Screaming is such a powerful magic!”

The exhibition runs November 18, 2023 April 30, 2024. Scan the code to read more.

FROM REFUGEE CAMP TO NURSING: CELINE IRASUBIZA’S INSPIRING STORY CFCC student Celine Irasubiza spent a decade in a Rwandan refugee camp with her parents and four younger siblings. Her family was chosen to immigrate to the United States and settled in Wilmington, NC, to begin a new life. Upon arriving in the U.S., Celine and her family faced a language barrier. However, she quickly learned English, became the family’s interpreter, and secured a job to support them. Celine’s caregiving role started in Rwanda when she cared for her youngest brother during his illness. This experience inspired her to pursue a nursing career. She began with CNA classes in high school and is now enrolled in CFCC’s Medical Assisting program. Her ultimate goal is to attain her Associate Degree in Nursing. Celine chose CFCC for its esteemed nursing program, its proximity to home, and her need to support her non-English-speaking mother. After graduation, she plans to gain work experience in healthcare, particularly in a pediatric office. Learn more about Medical Assisting at CFCC: cfcc.edu/medicalassisting

2022-2023 TOP STORIES | CFCC STUDENTS FREE FROM ADDICTION AND PURSUING LIFELONG GOALS From a young age, North Carolina-native Thornton Lee was driven to create music. He fast-tracked his education by earning his GED at 16, followed by a degree in recording engineering at Full Sail University. After interning at a Miami sound studio, Lee hit the road as a sound engineer for a music production company. For over 30 years, Lee traveled the country, managing sound production for bands of genres including classic rock, country, jazz, and classical. It was a lavish lifestyle, which led to a struggle with alcoholism. After 42 years, he realized he would never satisfy his addiction. A pivotal call to his mother brought him back to North Carolina, where he found solace and support at the faith-based center, Loaves & Fishes. Approaching his fifth year of sobriety, Lee has now achieved feats he once thought impossible. He recently obtained his captain’s license and now operates boats professionally.

In the spring of 2022, Lee approached Surf City Center Director Lori DeBruhl, expressing an interest in education. Debruhl assisted Lee with the enrollment process, and now Lee is officially a student in CFCC’s Associate of Arts – General Education program, pursuing his passion for art and music. “There is absolutely no way you could have told me 5 years ago that I would be where I am today. I found that you can change anything you want, any way you want, any time you want. Never quit your daydream; dreams come true.”

JENNIE GALLOWAY’S LIFELONG MUSICAL JOURNEY Jennie Galloway’s passion for music began at the age of five when she started studying piano. She later picked up the cello in fifth grade and then transitioned to playing the flute in her high school band. Following her mother’s advice, Galloway set aside her early musical aspirations to pursue a stable career, earning a math degree at Washington State University, and then working at GE Nuclear in California where she met her husband. In 1994, Galloway found herself relocating to the Atlantic Coast after her husband’s job at GE was transferred to the Wilmington plant. She decided to finally pursue a degree in music. Already proficient in piano, Galloway rediscovered the cello during her studies. She then joined CFCC’s Studio Symphony Orchestra class, composed largely of retirees. Galloway enjoys performing at the Wilson Center. The orchestra features musicians of various skill levels and plays diverse musical selections curated by CFCC’s Music program chair Philip Singleton. Galloway is praised for her instrumental role in sustaining the orchestra.

CFCC STUDENTS | 2022-2023 TOP STORIES NC LONGLEAF COMMITMENT GRANT CFCC Culinary Arts Student Jasmine Springer can be patient with cooking, waiting for the water to boil and the souffle to rise. But when it comes to her culinary career, her patience runs thin—she can’t wait to start. Springer shared her goals with her high school guidance counselor, who planned out the academic credits she would need to graduate a year early. Springer graduated from New Hanover High School at 16. Now, Springer pursues her dream of becoming a chef through CFCC’s Culinary Arts program. Through the NC Longleaf Commitment Grant, she’s able to complete her two years at CFCC for free. “CFCC made the most sense for me because it’s close to home and it just saves a lot of money. Rather than going straight to a 4-year university and paying so much out of pocket, I get my first two years of college here at no cost.” Springer has already impressed the CFCC Culinary Arts program director, Jaime Chadwick. “Jasmine’s attention to detail is impressive,” Chadwick said. “She is meticulous regarding the precision of her techniques. These qualities form the foundation of a great chef.” Springer is already building her resume by working at a local restaurant. After earning her associate degree, Springer plans to transfer to Johnson & Wales University to pursue her bachelor’s degree in culinary arts. Her dream job is to be a traveling chef, but she wouldn’t mind starting her own restaurant or catering business.

CFCC GRADUATE RECEIVES FULL SCHOLARSHIP TO AMHERST COLLEGE Philip White, a self-taught business analyst, recognized the value of formal education and decided to return to school to pursue his passion for politics and economics. Opting for CFCC due to its proximity, flexibility, and affordability, he balanced full-time work with online courses. He actively engaged in campus life, serving as a student ambassador and a member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). His leadership extended to the PTK Carolinas Region, where he held the position of president and acted as a liaison for CFCC’s chapter. Following his time at CFCC, White secured a full scholarship to Amherst College, solidifying his decision to further his education at a 4-year university. “The opportunities I have now are because I attended Cape Fear Community College. My service with Phi Theta Kappa offered me many opportunities to develop my leadership skills further and opened doors for networking outside the college.”

2022-2023 | GROWTH AND IMPACT EXPERIENCES STEADY GROWTH IN 5TH LARGEST CFCC ENROLLMENT DESPITE CHALLENGING TIMES

IN NORTH CAROLINA

Since 2018-2019, CFCC’s total enrollment has increased by 2.6% — above the state average — with North Carolina Community College System down 11.1% over the past five years. CFCC’s instructional FTE (full time enrollment) is up 11.3% compared to the NCCCS, which is at -2.5%. To retain faculty and staff, President Morton has made salaries a top priority: Of the state’s 58 community colleges, CFCC’s faculty salary ranking has risen from 20 th to 16th in the past year. Furthermore, the staff salary ranking has improved from 42nd to 30 th.

I attribute our continued success to the hard work of our faculty and staff and to the efficiencies we’ve put in place. We are working smarter and growing despite regional and national trends. It all comes down to enrollment. If CFCC is able to attract and retain students, then we’ll be able to do more for our students and employees.” — CFCC President Jim Morton

STRATEGIC EXPANSION: A NEW HORIZON FOR HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES PROGRAMS In a significant commitment to CFCC, the New Hanover County Commissioners approved the purchase of the former Bank of America building (319 N. 3rd Street) in April of 2023. The county successfully acquired the facility for approximately $11.4 million for CFCC, marking a significant milestone in the expansion and enhancement of CFCC’s healthcare programs. To address the growing demand for healthcare professionals and recognize the crucial role of education in meeting this demand, CFCC is strategically expanding its health and human services programs in the new space. This initiative involves comprehensive renovations aimed at creating advanced facilities, including cutting-edge simulation and nursing labs. Phase I of the renovations is in progress, with modifications underway on the first three floors of the building. This phase is focused on creating two large 16

lecture halls, hospital simulation labs, and nursing labs, along with dedicated teaching and office spaces. CFCC is operating on a fast-tracked renovation timeline with the goal of welcoming a new cohort of 60 nursing students for the 2024 spring semester. Looking ahead, Phase II of the renovations is scheduled to commence in 2024. In this stage, CFCC will concentrate on further expanding the number of classrooms and simulation labs. Additionally, there are plans to triple the capacity of the dental clinic, allowing CFCC to increase the number of dental assistant and dental hygienist students enrolled. Since 2019, CFCC has worked diligently to increase the number of highquality nurses trained to address escalating area demand. In collaboration with community partners such as Novant Health, Wilmington Health, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and New Hanover County Schools, CFCC has been actively engaged in developing initiatives and strategies to expand training opportunities for nurses and other healthcare professionals.

GROWTH AND IMPACT | 2022-2023 CFCC’S HVAC PROGRAM EXPANDS TO MEET INDUSTRY DEMAND CFCC’s HVAC program now includes a spring semester start, allowing more students to enroll each year. The North Campus training lab is also expanding to add more workshop space. This expansion will make room for additional classes, providing working adults greater flexibility to pursue a new career. The program will also incorporate more training in commercial HVAC installation and maintenance. After earning his Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology diploma, CFCC alumni Tom McMillon spent many years working in the industry. When he learned of an instructional opening with CFCC’s HVAC program, he jumped at the chance to share his knowledge and experience with future technicians. Today, McMillon is the HVAC program director at CFCC.

CFCC STUDENTS BUILD OUTDOOR KITCHEN FOR LOCAL NONPROFIT Two Cape Fear Community College Sustainability Technology students, Stephen Maloy and Christian Neff, completed a capstone project by building a new outdoor kitchen for a local non-profit organization. With the assistance of instructor John Wojciechowski, the team worked to design and construct an outdoor cook space at Willowdale Urban Farm. The space will host food tastings, cooking demonstrations, and other community events. Using 3D-modeling software, the students created an ambitious design that featured a U-shaped countertop, attached triple sink, and a trash enclosure. Students worked for three months to construct the kitchen, ensuring construction materials used were resilient and durable against water, sand, and rust. “We are very grateful for the outstanding design and construction of our new outdoor kitchen. The kitchen is not only functional, but also beautiful. The CFCC students and their instructor worked diligently to make the project a reality. The triple sink and expansive countertop make field washing and packing our fresh vegetables more efficient.” —Dolores Williams, Co-Director of Community Enrichment Initiatives, Willowdale Urban Farm 22

COMMUNITY OUTREACH | 2022-2023

CFCC INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS TRANSFORM LIVING SPACES FOR DESERVING CHILDREN Cape Fear Community College Interior Design students completed their capstone project – to transform the bedroom, bathroom, and play area for two young boys with unique healthcare needs earlier this year. The project is the result of a collaboration between the College and Welcome Home Angel, a nonprofit organization in Wilmington that brings joy to children with significant health or life-altering conditions by creating more functional living spaces. Students were given case statements of the two children they would serve: 9-year-old Dominick and 7-year-old Dax. Dominick faces challenges associated with autism and sensory processing disorder, while Dax faces challenges associated with autism, down syndrome, and vision and hearing loss. Students were asked to address specific needs in their bedrooms, bathrooms, and play areas, such as safer furniture, creative storage solutions, blackout curtains, grab bars, a sensory wall, adding traction to the bathroom floor, and overall, creating more soothing spaces that address sensory needs. “Not only were we able to use what we have learned in our classes, such as space planning, color theory, and digital presentations, we were also able to observe something that can’t be shown within those

four walls - bringing the project to life,” said Elizabeth Mann, Interior Design student. After three months of hard work, the new spaces were revealed to Dax and Dom in April. “Watching my students use the skills that they have worked so hard to develop brings me so much joy. 2022-2023 | OUTSTANDING FACULTY AND STAFF WILSON CENTER OPERATIONS MANAGER KATHLEEN ORTON: ONE OF THE EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE OF THE CAPE FEAR Kathleen Orton orchestrates over 450 volunteers for 200+ annual events at CFCC’s Wilson Center. She also manages logistics, including accommodating special seating needs and ensuring volunteer readiness. “We are so grateful for our volunteers,” says Orton. “Without them, ticket affordability would be a challenge.” Most volunteers are retirees, but the program also reserves spots solely for CFCC students, who come from all areas of study at the college. The Wilson Center hosts various events beyond shows, necessitating volunteers for donor dinners, breakfasts, and commencements. Orton recruits year-round, conducting interviews in the spring and training in the summer, with duties commencing in September. THE WILSON CENTER NEEDS VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are needed to help with guests—ushering and helping them get through our security scanning. Urgent needs include volunteers capable of assisting those needing special accommodations, especially wheelchair assistance.

A MAN OF MANY TALENTS: MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN MASON TARR Mason Tarr was propelled into a career in wholesale nursery management and landscaping, inspired by his father’s introduction to horticulture. He’s been with CFCC’s facilities department since 2019, fixing office and classroom issues with quick, friendly responses. He still enjoys gardening, especially cultivating bonsai trees, a passion he’s pursued for over 40 years. In his spare time, Mason teaches bonsai art and recently led a CFCC team-building session. OUTSTANDING FACULTY AND STAFF | 2022-2023 ROCK-N-ROLL? CLASSICAL? THE ANSWER IS YES! CFCC MUSIC INSTRUCTOR ERNESTO FERRERI CFCC Music Instructor, Ernesto Ferreri, recently received a special gift from the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra. They performed two of his compositions, “Symphony for Strings” and “Octet for Chamber Orchestra,” in their spring concert. Ferreri cherished the live performance, connecting with musicians and introducing his work to the audience. Transitioning from rock to classical music, Ferreri’s encounter with Beethoven’s “Hammerklavier Sonata” at 18 sparked his passion for composing classical music. He pursued music education and composition, ultimately joining CFCC in 1993. Today, he teaches music courses and continues to compose. Ferreri’s impact extends globally, re-creating music for English versions of Anime shows and sharing his compositions worldwide. His works have been performed from Wilmington to Japan.

PHILOSOPHY PROFESSOR DR. EMILIA SORENSEN’S TRANSCONTINENTAL JOURNEY Emilia Sorensen, a native of Slovakia, embarked on her journey in the United States as a summer camp counselor, where she met her husband, Ben. Following their marriage, Emilia pursued a double master’s degree in philosophy and literature from Constantine the Philosopher University in Slovakia, which culminated in a doctorate. In 2006, her family relocated to Wilmington. Emilia’s dedication to her students is palpable. As a philosophy instructor at CFCC since 2016, she’s made a profound impact on learners, demystifying philosophy and inspiring them to excel. One such student, Alec Ott, attests to her teaching prowess and mentorship. “Dr. Sorensen is a great professor. She made a subject that I didn’t think I was smart enough to understand, philosophy, completely understandable. She inspired me to work hard and to achieve success. She is one of my biggest supporters. When I look back at my time at CFCC, I am so happy that I signed up for one of her classes. It had a profound impact on my academic and personal life. I look forward to taking more of Dr. Sorensen’s classes in the future!” 27

EWD APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM | 2022-2023

IT JUST TAKES A SPARK Immediately after high school, Victor Morales went to work for a farm in his hometown of Warsaw, NC. It didn’t take long for Morales to learn that farming wasn’t for him. Determined to start a new career path, Morales began working as an electrician’s helper for T.A. Woods Company, a Wilmington-based commercial construction company. After a year of employment, the company offered Morales an opportunity to expand his career trajectory. Through an apprenticeship program at CFCC, he could return to school, gain more training, and still work full-time with T.A. Woods— all while working toward his electrician’s journeyman license. In addition, T.A. Woods agreed to pay for his tuition. Morales signed up for CFCC’s Electrical Apprenticeship program and attended class at CFCC’s North Campus two nights per week to continue his education in electrical systems. Upon completion of the four-year program, Morales can sit for the journeyman license exam. “The instructors are great, and this program motivated me to become a better electrician. I have gained more confidence at my job. Thanks to the instruction that I received, I know I am doing things by the book.”

2022-2023 | GRANTS AND AWARDS CFCC RECEIVED GRANT TO ADDRESS FINANCIAL BARRIERS FOR UNDERSERVED STUDENTS Cape Fear Community College was selected as a recipient of a $250,000 grant from the New Hanover Community Endowment to support students pursuing careers in technical education and skilled trades who face financial challenges prohibiting them from completing their programs. The grant provided support for 333 students, each with an award of $750. The award helped to address the cost of registration fees, books, required tools, uniforms, materials, supplies, and credentialing exams. CFCC President, Jim Morton, expressed his gratitude stating, “We are incredibly honored to be named a recipient in the inaugural New Hanover Community Endowment grant process. This grant will further Cape Fear Community College’s ability to make a real difference in the lives of our underserved students. By addressing the financial barriers that have traditionally prevented these students from completing their programs of study, we can ensure our students can better their career opportunities.”

GRANTS AND AWARDS | 2022-2023 CFCC STUDENT RECEIVES INAUGURAL SCHOLARSHIP Maria Torres discovered her passion for brick masonry while enrolled in a high school course. Encouraged by her masonry teacher, she excelled in 25 competitions, even earning recognition in Masonry Magazine. After graduating, Torres worked in masonry for two years before deciding to pursue an associate degree in Construction Management at CFCC. She received support from a grant provided by the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association. During her studies, Torres interned at Monteith Construction Corporation and learned about the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). She achieved the distinction of being the first recipient of their scholarship at CFCC. As Torres approaches graduation, she has received multiple job offers from companies such as Monteith, Citadel Masonry, and an inspector position in Raleigh—all offering exciting career prospects. “Presenting the check to Maria Torres was heartwarming,” said NAWIC Director Taylor King. “She deserves every single penny of the grant. We cannot wait to watch her grow into her career and will continue to support her in any way we can.”

INNOVATIVE • INSPIRING | FACULTY AND STAFF DONTERIO PERKINS, DIVERSITY SUCCESS COORDINATOR I am grateful to be the director of the Nixon Leaders Center. The Nixon Leaders Center focuses on increasing the graduation, retention, and transferring of underrepresented populations of students enrolled at CFCC. During my time here, I have learned that not all community colleges have spaces like ours. I appreciate that our institution recognizes the importance of our space and the needs of our students. I understand the personal struggles of our students as I overcame similar struggles as a college student as well. I had to persevere and truly appreciate my mentor in college so I know the impact that my involvement has on our students. The center continues to grow with our outreach efforts. Through our programming, mentorship, and leadership opportunities, I aim to make our students feel a sense of belonging, empowerment, and joy in their accomplishments!

INNOVATIVE • INSPIRING | AMAZING ALUMNI PHILLIP JONES, CULINARY ARTS, BAKING AND PASTRY ARTS INSTRUCTOR The Jelly Cabinet Bakery is a true family business located in the Brooklyn Arts District of Wilmington. The bakery is owned and operated by CFCC’s Baking and Pastry Arts Instructor, Phillip Jones, who has been with CFCC since 2021 and is a graduate of both CFCC Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Arts programs. Collaborating with his sister, Simone, a graduate in Hospitality Management from CFCC, the duo manages the day-to-day operations of the bakery. His mom and aunt also help out by serving up delicious treats to customers when Jones is busy baking. Jones pays homage to his family by including recipes passed down from his mother and grandmother. Even the name of the bakery was inspired by his grandmother’s jelly cabinet—a cherished childhood source of baking ingredients. His grandmother’s actual jelly cabinet now occupies a special place in the bakery.

TAWNY TSENG, TSENG NURSING SCHOLARSHIP After serving in the Air Force and raising three children, Tseng returned to school pursue nursing through CFCC’s ADN program. Midway through, life became very difficult financially and personally. Thanks to CFCC’s Financial Aid department and amazing faculty, she was able to complete the program. Following Tseng’s graduation in 2003, she pursued successive academic achievements, completing ADN to BSN and BSN to DNP programs, along with specialized training in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) programs by 2012. Reflecting on the journey, Tseng acknowledges, “I love what I do, and CFCC’s timely and compassionate support played a pivotal role in my success. Since 2012, I’ve been practicing as a PMHNP-BC/FNP-BC and have been fortunate to serve as a faculty member at UNCW and Frontier Nursing University. Presently, as a Clinical Associate Professor at ECU, specializing in PMHNP advanced practice, I’m excited to pay it forward and aid others in achieving their aspirations. CFCC and the incredible individuals I encountered there have truly transformed my life.” 55

FOUNDATION F R O M O U R D O N O R S BILL BAGGETT

KIMBERLY BERRY

In collaboration with my attorney, Michael Green, and a homeless shelter, we established an educational fund to teach trade skills to shelter residents. Desiring to increase the fund’s impact, we transferred the funds to CFCC, marking the inception of the Rising Tide Fund.

I gave to the Shirley Hart Berry Scholarship fund in memory of and to honor my mom who passed away in January of 2023. She served as an instructor and Chair of the English and Other Languages Department. After retiring from CFCC, she created a scholarship fund for female students in nontraditional fields.

The Dorothy A. Hungerford scholarship, initiated with the encouragement of my wife, assists abused women in reclaiming their independence and selfrespect through the acquisition of vocational skills. Eligibility criteria include caring for at least one child while pursuing their education. CFCC was an excellent choice for these initiatives. Their diverse range of trades equip students for immediate employment in well-paying careers upon graduation.

While going through her papers I came across several letters from her former students lauding her for being one of the most influential teachers they had ever had and from scholarship recipients thanking her for the opportunity her scholarship provided. It is my honor to continue her legacy by contributing to her scholarship fund. I encourage others to do the same or to donate to the Foundation’s other worthy endeavors.

Receiving letters from CFCC students brings immense satisfaction. It reaffirms the significance of giving back when one can do so.

KATHERINE CAMMACK The Babies Hospital Foundation is a long-time supporter of CFCC Foundation for programs supporting nursing and children’s health. We are pleased to be able to support the new pilot program for drop-in childcare to try to fill the serious void in our community particularly for those young parents trying to further their education and improve the lives of their families.

Cape Fear Community College’s Yamaha Outboard Technician Program aligns so well with our business; it was easy to get excited about offering support. Each time I visit the school or host students at our Service Center, I grow more enthusiastic about the program’s results and the benefit it provides to the future marine technicians and our industry.

I began my education at a community college in Pennsylvania and ended my career at CFCC as a Counselor. As my own journey came full circle, I was able to better understand the academic, personal and social value of a community college education. Cape Fear Community College is the most suitable educational option for the 21st century: community-based learning that offers the student the full experience. While at CFCC, the Department of Athletics grew to have a very special place in my heart. My wife, Nancy, and I were thrilled we could help leave a legacy and hope this helps to change young people’s lives for the better.

DR. RUDI RICHMAND

Establishing scholarships and providing funding for future students ensures we can grow as a community. The investment we make in students’ education will live long beyond those that give, and supporting students at community colleges will provide benefits to everyone they come in contact with, and our entire community. I attended a community college and am proud to have worked at a community college in North Carolina. I am committed to making sure those opportunities are available to all future students.

My professional career has been built around emergency veterinary medicine. Becoming an adjunct instructor at CFCC has given me the incredible opportunity to combine my love of teaching and passion for medicine. Recently, the Foundation board has opened my eyes to the greater needs of this community and it has been my honor to serve with an incredible group of individuals all working towards helping students achieve their career goals.
