CORE COURSE Race and Identities: Debates in the Colombian Context (3 credits)
SPANISH LANGUAGE Required for beginner and intermediate Spanish students; optional for advanced Spanish students. (3 credits)
DIRECT-ENROLL ELECTIVES AT UAO (3 credits)
• All students take at least one elective at UAO. Beginner or intermediate Spanish speakers take History of Armed Conflict in Colombia, taught in English.
• Advanced Spanish speakers may take courses in Spanish alongside local students. Courses include subjects of sociology, film studies, anthropology, and communications.
CET ELECTIVES (3 credits)
• A Social History of Colombian Coffee
• Crime & Justice in Colombia
• The Cultures of Afro-Descendants in Colombia (taught in Spanish)
• Environmental Conflicts & Ethnic Groups in Colombia

TRAVELING SEMINAR BEYOND CALI
Experience a week-long trip to Palenque, Cartagena, and La Boquilla:
• Stay with a local family in Palenque and explore the community’s rich music, farming, justice, and culinary traditions.
• See why Cartagena is Colombia's top tourist destination. Relax at the beach, then attend a ballroom workshop to explore identity and self-care as a form of resistance.
• Visit La Boquilla, a village outside the city with a large Afro-Colombian population. Take a ride through the mangroves and learn traditional fishing techniques.
