CEP: A Golden Circle A note from Dean Sherman It is my pleasure to welcome you to the College of Education and Psychology Annual Edition. This CEP Annual is a celebration of the many accomplishments of the faculty and students in the College.

The College of Education and Psychology’s core purpose is to prepare competent, caring, and qualified professionals in the fields of education, psychology and counseling and to advance the knowledge base in our respective disciplines.

Simon Sinek talks about a golden circle that exists within institutions that identifies the ‘what’, the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ of organizations. The ‘what’ refers to the result the organization sets out to achieve. For the College of Education and Psychology, it is to prepare competent, caring and qualified professionals in the fields of education, psychology and counseling.

The ‘how’ are the processes the organization engages in to achieve the desired results. In the College of Education and Psychology, our faculty are committed to providing exemplary instructional experiences in their classes that are guided and informed by the research they pursue through scholarly endeavors.

At the heart of the organization is the ‘why’ or the ‘True North Star’ of the institution. Why does the organization exist and why will it exist for the next hundred years. For the College of Education and Psychology, it is because our passion is to prepare the next generation of Texas educators and mental health professionals. We know that one day one of our former students will teach a child to read, counsel a client through a difficult period, or inspire a student to dream big.

In essence, the College of Education and Psychology is providing the outstanding educators and mental health professionals our society needs to pass the torch from one generation to the next.

CEP Research Profile: Dr. Amy Roberson

In her own words

As a Developmental Psychologist, I am interested in studying how phenomena like occupational goals and aspirations develop across the lifespan. My current work focuses on the impact of social and cultural factors, such as gender stereotyping and gender roles and how these goals and aspirations of females and males differ at certain points in their lives.

One of my goals as a faculty member is to make sure my research program is accessible and interesting to students.

Involving undergraduate and graduate students in my research lab is central to my philosophy as an educator, and an endeavor that I have found to be mutually beneficial to both my research productivity and student learning.

All of my projects involve input and collaboration with my team of 6-8 students, who are encouraged to be involved in all aspects of the research process, from designing the study, to collecting data in the community, to analyzing and presenting the results at conferences and in research journals. One research project we are working on involves interviewing children (ages 6-11) about their perceptions of working parents, and whether or not children’s views of the abilities of working mothers versus fathers are related to their own family and career goals.

This study was designed by one of my current graduate students, who is leading a team of students in efforts to recruit and interview families for the study.

I enjoy working with such committed and talented groups of students. I have been so impressed with the caliber of students we have at UT Tyler, and hope to continue to work to expand opportunities for more student to learn about and get involved in conducting their own research.

CEP: Alumni Profile and Reflections on UT Tyler The College of Education and Psychology is proud to recognize the two newest Superintendents in Smith County.

Dr. Christopher Moran – Whitehouse ISD Chris received his Master of Education in Educational Administration from UT Tyler in 2000. He is a former teacher, coach and principal.

During the past five years Chris served as the Superintendent of Brownsboro ISD. This spring, Chris was appointed Superintendent of Whitehouse Independent School District.

“When I began investigating educational leadership programs, it was clear UT Tyler provided the most rigorous and comprehensive program around. I consistently use skills and knowledge gained at UT Tyler in my role as a school administrator. The program challenged and equipped me to lead with confidence and integrity.

For any aspiring school administrator, UT Tyler is second-to-none.”

Mr. Cody Mize - Winona ISD Cody received both his Master of Education in Educational Administration and Superintendent certification from UT Tyler.

He is a former teacher and coach and served as a principal of Quitman High School for 10 years. This spring, Cody was selected to be the Superintendent of Winona Independent School District.

“Although there was a variety of options available, especially with the trend of distance learning, UT Tyler’s Educational Leadership program was my top choice to earn my master’s degree, principal and superintendent certification. The course work was challenging and rewarding. I felt thoroughly prepared to take the reigns as a campus principal and serve in my present role as superintendent. In addition to receiving an excellent education, I developed a strong network of professors and fellow alumni I still communicate with today. These relationships have opened doors to collaborations that have had positive impact on my campus and now district.”

CEP Service Profile: Tutoring at the Salvation Army by: Priscilla Gilpin Imagine a lot of laughter, reading, math and literacy games, and energy. This is a normal scene for students enjoying after school tutorials, where literacy and math strategies are taught to at-risk students who are residing in the Salvation Army shelter and the surrounding neighborhood. Students are tutored on-site at The Salvation Army facility, which is centrally located in the middle of Tyler, Texas.

Many of these students arrive “home” to the shelter via transportation provided

by The Salvation Army. Upon arrival, students are greeted by Salvation Army childcare workers and UT Tyler tutors from the School of Education. Small groups of elementary age students from kindergarten to fifth grade are Priscilla Gilpin Lecturer tutored one day per week for two hours. The goal is to provide needed interventions in the area of math and literacy by university-trained and supervised pre-service teachers. Students are assessed to determine specifically what areas need to be targeted in tutorial sessions. Tutors prepare lessons for one-three students in literacy or math, designing lessons around Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), district and campus expectations. The design of the tutorials incorporates the RTI (Response to Intervention) model where students are taught in small groups and monitored for progress over time. Tutors are trained how to tutor in math and literacy, how to write a lesson plan, how to effectively engage students throughout the tutorial time and are required to complete a Safe from Harm training provided by the Salvation Army.

As a result of this endeavor, both tutors and those being tutored benefit from the experience. The pre-service teachers learn multiple lessons about the factors that contribute to a child being at-risk, including how to be empathetic. Students who receive tutoring benefit from having a mentor and tutor that consistently shows up to deliver quality tutorial sessions that are customized around their specific and unique learning needs.

The partnership between the Salvation Army and the School of Education at The University of Texas at Tyler benefits both the UT Tyler students and the community.
