Alabama Epsilon Chapter, Tuskegee, AL Epsilon Chapter celebrated the 91st Founder’s Day with Theta Phi Chapter, Auburn, AL.

On October 21, members of Epsilon Chapter participated in the B&D Cancer Center Cancer Survivors’ Tribute Parade. This annual event is held in celebration of cancer survivors in the Macon County community. Participants received health information from the American Cancer Society.

Epsilon Chapter’s Intake Ceremony was conducted on November 5, 2023. Zandra Day, Karen Perkins and Starla Richardson were welcomed into the Sisterhood.

In November, Epsilon Chapter donated 100 shoeboxes filled with toys, clothes, accessories, and personal care items to Samaritan’s Purse: Operation Christmas Child.

Also in November, members of Epsilon Chapter donated winter coats to families in need.

On December 1, members of Epsilon and Epsilon Beta Chapters participated in distributing red ribbons and educational information regarding HIV/AIDS for World Aids Day to students on the campus of Tuskegee University. More than 300 students participated in the activity.

On December 2, Epsilon Chapter participated with the Alabama and Mississippi Chapters for Connect- the -Dots hosted by Eta Phi Chapter, Mobile, AL. It was a great evening of learning about leadership development and fun playing jeopardy and bingo!

On October 18, Epsilon Beta Chapter collaborated with Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, Inc. at Tuskegee University for a CPR Awareness & Training Event. Participants were able to learn basic life support (BLS) techniques, use of the automated external defibrillator (AED) and have hands-on practice.

On October 25, members of Epsilon Beta Chapter performed health assessments, BMI measurements, and blood pressure screenings during Tuskegee University’s “Get STEMmED” Day. This event focused on exposing area high school students to STEM majors, careers, and identities.

On October 6, the Sigma Eta Chapter partnered with the Montgomery Black Nurses Association (MBNA) to conduct a Blood Drive at the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. Attendees were educated on breast cancer awareness and sickle cell anemia. Fifteen units of blood were donated.

Sorors Debra Pinkney and Dora Brooks participated in a community service project held at the Revelation Baptist Church on October 14, 2023. Blood pressure screenings were conducted. There were some abnormally high blood pressures, and follow-ups were completed with members.

Founder’s Day was observed on October 16, 2023, at 6 p.m. at ABJC Event Center in Montgomery, Alabama. The theme was “Jewels on a Turtle.” Sorors participated in a program with reflections on their nursing careers and their impact on the nursing profession. Soror Gwen Davis was also recognized as the Chapter’s Founder.

On November 18, 2023, seven active members and two inactive members of the Sigma Eta Chapter delivered Holiday Food Baskets to three individuals of the community who demonstrated a need for food insecurity. Additionally, sorors distributed gowns, socks, and warm-up suits for our adopted resident in a local nursing home. One recipient expressed her excitement about seeing the members again and reported her appreciation for receiving the food. She was also excited to share her improvements and progression in self-care. Another recipient resided in the rehabilitation/nursing home and was most appreciative, along with her daughter, who was present for the distribution of the clothing items.

On December 5, 2023, Sorors Barbara Demus, Edith Washington, and Phylicia Austin delivered eight (8) gift cards purchased from Wal-Mart totaling $25.00 each to the Veterans at the Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare Service (Montgomery). The Veterans Administration selected the Veterans who demonstrated a need for food insecurity.

Sigma Eta’s annual Christmas Celebration was held on December 9, 2023, at Arrowhead Country Club.

The Hospitality Committee hosted the event; the sorors and guests enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship, laughter, and holiday cheer.

Sigma Eta Chapter presented “A Senior Lunch and Learn” seminar on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at Bradleyton Helicon Nutrition Community Center in Grady, Alabama. Topics of discussion included Wills, Power of Attorney, Advance Directives, Life Insurance (Ownership vs Beneficiary), and Medicare C and D. The presenters were Lee McIver Jordan, Esq., Jordan, Robert Taylor, III, and Dawn Glasscock. Seven sorors participated. There were 39 seniors in attendance.

On December 16, 2023, Sigma Eta Chapter awarded scholarships to two nursing students for $1000. Mya Stringer and Keisha Cooks were the recipients of the Gwen Davis Scholarship.

Eta Phi Chapter, Mobile, AL October 2023 Eta Phi continues to provide Service for Humanity through community activities. On October 7 th, five members provided blood pressure screenings for a dental health fair in partnership with the Delta Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Fortis College Medical Assistant students, nurses from local churches, as well as other health affiliations. Eta Phi members assisted in screening over 100 clients.

As October is the month for Chi Eta Phi Sorority Incorporated’s Founder’s Day, members of Eta Phi Chapter held their closed Founder’s Day ritual, followed by food and fellowship at a local restaurant.

Thinking of You notes were sent to inactive charter members, and to sick and shut-in members during Founder’s Day Week.

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, four members of Eta Phi Chapter laced up their tennis shoes and participated in the Annual American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Walk, and funds in the amount of $521were donated to this worthy cause.

November 2023 Eta Phi Chapter held their first Spades Tournament. The funds raised from this event will be used for the Chapter’s scholarship fund. The winning team members were awarded a $100 gift card each. Food trucks and other vendors were present, and a fun time was had by all participants.

December 2023 The month of December was a very busy month for Eta Phi! On December 2 nd, Eta Phi was host to the Alabama and Mississippi Connect the Dots event. Dr. Willie L. Patterson, III, EdD, Certified John Maxwell Coach, Teacher, Trainer, and Speaker provided an outstanding topic on Leadership: Put Your Dream to the Test- See It and Seize It. This dynamic presentation was followed by Chi Eta Phi Bingo and Jeopardy! It was an event full of learning and fun!

On December 8th, Socks and Sweaters were donated to a local community center for those in need, four sorors participated in this community activity.

On December 12th, members gathered for fun, food, and fellowship, with games, exchanging of gifts and an ugly sweater contest. Toys were collected for needy children in Mobile County, as well as other items for nursing home residents. The toys were delivered to the local Mercedes-Benz dealership who partnered with a local TV station, and Volunteers of America.

On December 16th, six sorors, one of which was a visiting soror from Lambda Eta Eta Chapter, Huntsville, Al. visited the Twin Oaks Nursing home providing hats, socks, treat bags, and played games with at least thirty (30) residents. All had a merry and joyous time! Merry Christmas!

Eta Phi Chapter continues to donate non-perishable food items to the local libraries within the city of Mobile monthly; and participate in various leadership and educational seminars sponsored by their employers as well as Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated.

Kappa Phi Chapter held its annual Education and Scholarship Brunch on Saturday December 2, 2023. The guest speaker was Darlene Minniefield, Urban Regional Extension Agent for Lauderdale County, Alabama.

Ms. Minniefield presented the topic, “Fall Prevention” focusing on mobility issues often experienced by aging individuals. She encouraged interaction from the audience comprised of approximately 75 percent senior citizens. There were lively discussions in which participants related their experiences with and concerns about mobility issues.

The brunch is the major fundraiser for the chapter and proceeds are used to award scholarships to nursing students. Among the attendees at the brunch were this year’s scholarship recipients who received recognition for their achievements. Upon receiving the awards, Alyssia Kennemore and Anna Wamble, both seniors at the University of North Alabama in Florence, shared past experiences that led them to a nursing career. Also, each spoke of their plans for their future professional careers.

Lambda Eta Eta had an enjoyable and memorable observance of Founders Day on October 16, 2023.

Lambda Eta Eta celebrated its one year anniversary in the Significant Southeast Region and Chi Eta Ohi Sorority, Incorporated on November 19, 2023.

On December 1, 2023, Soror Breana Mackey spoke at a local World AIDS Day event. She discussed the HIV epidemic impact on our community and U=U campaign. Fellow Lambda ETA ETA members were present in support of the community event.

On December 1, 2023, Lambda Eta Eta partnered with Central North Alabama Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Inc. on world AIDS day at the public library to pass out educational materials on HIV to the community.

Florida Soror Carolyn Adams, Anti-Basileus, runs a clinic/wellness center named the Estella Byrd Whitman Wellness and Community Resources Center in Ocala, FL. The center provides free or reduced pay services to lower income individuals in west Ocala. A town hall meeting was held to promote the clinic on December 9, 2023. Soror Adams spoke and 3 members attended.

Amerigroup Georgia Rural Health Scholarship Gamma Chi Chapter partnered with the Amerigroup Corporation to offer nursing scholarship opportunities to deserving nursing students who are committed to work in rural counties within the state of Georgia after graduation. On October 14, 2023, Gamma Chi Chapter awarded Ms. Imon Kendall $12,500. Ms. Kendall is a nursing student at Gordon State College. 22 sorors were present, 10 virtual, 5 special guests.

100th Birthday Celebration Charter member Catherine Ammons turned 100 years old! Gamma Chi participated in her birthday celebration, where 5 sorors were present. Soror Ammons was featured on Fox 5 Atlanta on November 27 th, “Retired Spellman Nurse turns 100”. Soror Ammons attended Freeman’s Hospital School of Nursing now known as Howard University. She moved to Georgia in 1960 and worked at Spelman College teaching nursing students. The news article noted “Because of Jim Crow's "Separate But Equal" laws, the family says Georgia had to pay for Ammons to complete her B.A. of nursing in Jamaica, New York. She then became the first nurse with a degree to work in the Fulton County Public Health Department.” Fox 5 Atlanta.

Founder’s Day Celebration On Founders’ Day, October 16, 2023, Gamma Chi honored our past, celebrated the present and future of our Sorority that is 91 years old. On this Founders Day we took a moment to reflect on our shared values, vision and the inspiration to continue to work towards our goals. We were honored to have our Candle Lighting Service led by our own Madame Supreme, Sarah Killian who lit the candle for the Lamp of Service. Our Dean of Membership, Soror Patrice L. Hammond, honored the legacy of three of our charter members who were present. We were honored to have in our presence our very own SER Director Madame Juanita Gibbons- Delaney.

Gamma Chi Congratulates Soror Georgia Faye We are pleased to announce that Soror Georgia F. Jackson, DNP, MPH, RN, NE-BC, Director of Nursing Workforce Development and Patient-Family Centered Care, was selected to be a member of the first cohort of the AARP Center for Health Equity through Nursing SM (A-CHEN) Volunteer Ambassador Program.

The program aims to: • Focus on strengthening and diversifying the nursing workforce • Understand the social determinants of health in care delivery and nurses’ role • Elevate and spread the concept of equity-minded nurses Improve health equity and implement recommendations from the Future of Nursing 2030 report A-CHEN leverages the power of nursing, consumers, AARP and national and state coalitions for collective impact and sustainable system change. The ambassadors will share best practices, opportunities and learnings to implement change and promote scalable solutions, including a toolkit.

Soror Dawn Aycock Dr. Aycock is the first African American to achieve the rank of professor, in the School of Nursing at Georgia State University. Soror Aycock was one of 11 nurse scientists in the United States selected for the inaugural cohort of the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship Program for Nurse Leaders and Innovators.

Hypertension Screening The event was on October 21st at Opulence Hair Studio in Decatur, Georgia. Over 40 participants were screened, and two were referred to the local emergency department. The event was attended by 6 sorors.

The group ended the Chi Day of Service celebration with a bang after the event with great food and fellowship at Pesos Mexican Cantina.

Hope Hill Elementary On November 16th, members of Gamma Chi Chapter visited Hope Hill Elementary School, an underserved school in downtown Atlanta. Four families including their elementary school children were presented $75.00 gift cards to assist them in planning their Thanksgiving meals. Four sorors were in attendance, the children presented the sorors with handmade thank you cards.

Nicholas House Annual Pancake Breakfast and Green Envelope On Saturday, December 2, 2023, Gamma Chi held the Annual Pancake Breakfast for the residents at the Nicholas House in Atlanta, GA. Gamma Chi members prepared and served a warm and loving pancake breakfast to the families. This year, there were 31 residents (12 adults and 19 kids). In addition, through our Chapter’s Green Envelope fundraiser, we raised $1050, which allowed us to provide gift cards for four families. The families and staff at the Nicholas House were very appreciative of our Service for Humanity. In attendance were: Sorors Kathy Hill, Janet Braimah, Juliette Johnson, Ayrieka Charite, Treva Carter, and Sandra Leonard. The Pancake Breakfast and Green Envelope fundraiser was a success and promoted community involvement and homelessness awareness amongst Gamma Chi members.

Phi Chi Chapter, Augusta, GA

The sorors of Phi Chi Chapter have continued service for humanity and maintained community visibility during the past three months. We began the month of October by participating in a free community health fair for the early detection of Cancer, Diabetes & Heart Disease held at Bethel Community Church Family Life Center. Phi Chi took blood pressures and instructed laypersons on the heart and other health issues. Phi Chi not only performed as instructed but also was instrumental in communicating with several nursing students. Additionally, we monitored thirty-four (34) blood pressures while advising a few clients to be aware of the possible complications with hypertension and obesity, while giving encouragement at the same time. We also passed out and explained several pamphlets on a variety of health issues. There were four sorors present. One Dollar at a Time Productions, LLC a book publishing and theater and film production company sponsored the event. This huge event covered many aspects of health concerns over and above the ones previously mentioned.

We continued on October 10 with the induction of the Dynamic Duo, Alfrieda Bing and Hermecender Walton-Williams. Twelve sorors were present.

Alfrieda Bing and Hermecender Walton- Williams “The Dynamic Duo” On October 16, the “Dynamic Duo” performed their service project at the Salvation Army helping to prepare food and serve the families residing at the shelter as well as Augusta’s homeless population.

Phi Chi Chapter, Incorporated celebrated our 91st Founder’s Day celebration on October 16 in person at the HUB. Our Founder’s Day observance was most successful as this was truly a memorable occasion.

Sorors Margaret Beard, Claudia Maryland and Patsy Scott all charter members, attended the celebration.

Soror Beard expounded on her experience of teaching at the Texas Women’s University. During her tenure, she chaired forty-six (46) dissertations with each of them becoming PhD RNs. Taylor Soror of the Year award was presented to Soror Barbara Welcher, our Immediate Past Basileus. Both of these sorors are well deserving of the honor and recognition. Thirty-two (32) sorors attended.

EDUCATION CONTINUES On October 17, Soror Stephens presented an educational presentation to the seniors at St. John’s Towers.

The educational topic was “The Mental Health Benefits of Exercise and Physical Activity in the Senior Population”. The four items discussed that helps the mental health of seniors when they exercise and apply physical activity were Endurance, Strength, Balance and Flexibility exercises. The seniors were provided with an individual handout on “The Mental Health Benefits of Exercise and Physical Activity”.

We provided a demonstration and assistance to those that wanted to try to participate. The seniors were very engaged and humorous at the same time. Soror Bernice Crafton attended and assisted as needed.

On the evening of October 17, we continued with session 2 of a series of our Leadership Training via zoom.

Presenters were Soror Sarah Glover who spoke on the Roles and Responsibilities of the Historian, Roles and Responsibilities of Nominating Chair; Soror Betty Settles, Roles and Responsibilities of the Dean of Membership; and Soror Carolyn Lightfoot presented Roles and Responsibilities of the Beta Sponsor. Twenty-three sorors attended the training.

On October 18, the Mayor of Augusta proclaimed October 18 as National Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the Augusta Mall. Soror Carolyn Byrd, founder of Reduce Your Risk shared her story with those in the audience. Phi Chi Chapter was asked to assist MRC with the taking of blood pressures and the distribution of health related educational material. The Classy Steppers graced us with their presence and danced to several songs. Phi Chi members present at the event were Basileus Lorraine Stephens, Sorors Carolyn Byrd, Beulah Nash-Teachey and Maggie Thurmond Dorsey.

NOVEMBER 2023 Phi Chi Intake Ceremony for the Dynamic Duo occurred on November 7, 2023 at the Piedmont Hospital Cardiovascular Center with twenty-six sorors present. After intake, the Dynamic Duo were showered with good food, an array of beautiful gifts, good fellowship and sisterhood bonding. Their unique name the “Dynamic Duo” fits them to a “T” as they are certainly a dynamic duo. We salute and honor fourteen of our Phi Chi Veteran nurses.

We pay homage to the following Phi Chi nurses who has served this country well.

November 13 was Soror Margaret Beard’s 99th birthday. Sorors Sarah Glover and Veronica Way visited her and made her smile as they read all the birthday cards sent to her from several sorors and Phi Chi Chapter. Her gifts included a dozen yellow roses, a decorated birthday cake and a $25.00 gift card (to purchase a fish dinner that had been promised to her when asked what was her favorite meal), and a fluffy green turtle. She was very happy and smiled the entire time. A caravan of sorors proceeding our chapter meeting on November 11th were all set to visit her; however, her son had forgotten about our planned visit, and she was not prepared for guests as he was out of town, therefore, an impromptu visit was made on the 13th which was her birthday.

November 14 – Education at St. John’s Towers Sorors Ella Ealy and Lorraine Stephens continued the benefits of exercise on mental health at St. John’s Towers with some dancing (square, jitterbug, shag and line dancing) at the seniors’ request.

November 14 – Phi Chi completed our third sequence in a series on Leadership Training. Soror Bernice Crafton presented on the Role and Responsibilities of Committee Chairs and How to Conduct Committee Meetings. Soror Marcia Lowe presented on the Roles and Responsibilities of Members and Soror Antonia Autry finished the night with her presentation on the Roles and Responsibilities of Group Leaders. Twenty-seven sorors attended the presentation.

November 30, 2023, Phi Chi participated with the Project Refresh Event at the Department of Health in Augusta. We provided blood pressure screenings primarily for the homeless population and some nonhomeless individuals as well. Forty-four (44) adults ranging from ages nineteen (19) to eighty (80) years old were screened and sixteen (16) were counseled due to readings out of the normal range. Three sorors participated in this event.

DECEMBER 2023 December 2, 2023 - Phi Chi presented an educational presentation to the Rosa T Beard Debutantes of Augusta Georgia. Soror Jayla Waugh spoke to the teenagers on ways to avoid distracted driving, the dangerous of distracted driving and asked them to take a vow to not drive distracted. Jayla also provided a game for the teens to play on their cell phones that demonstrated how easily it is to be distracted while driving. There were approximately 20 teens, six adults and three chapter members in attendance.

December 8, 2023 - Sorors Belinda Harrison and Barbara Bynes volunteered at the 23rd Annual IHeart Media Cares for Kids Radiothon. Last year, the funds were used to purchase items for departments such as the Neonatal ICU and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, as well as special items required for the Pediatric Operating Room. During the radiothon, children and their parents recounted their own experiences with the Children's Hospital. The donations significantly help fund the extras that make the Children's Hospital of Georgia a special place for kids.

Mu Phi Chapter continues to serve the metro Atlanta Community. The chapter provides education and assistance to uplift the lives and spirits in the communities that we serve. Through the projects performed, we can increase the knowledge of the participants and enable them to use the knowledge to improve the health of their family, friends, and community.

In October, Mu Phi partnered with Gamma Chi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi, Glow Up Community Organization, and The Red Cross to provide a health fair and blood drive in the Decatur, GA area. In addition to the blood drive, Mu Phi provided “Hands Only” CPR demonstrations, Hypertension, Stroke, and Heart Disease education. The Chapter also participated in the 19th Annual Festival of Lights Celebration in Atlanta’s West End. During this event, the Chapter provided education related to Heart Disease and distributed over 300 pairs of socks, masks, clothing, and hand sanitizer to the community participants.

November was also a busy time for Mu Phi Chapter. We celebrated the veterans at Glenwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for their service to our country. The veterans received toiletries, socks, bracelets, flags, and cross word puzzle books. The veterans within the Chapter were also celebrated with cards and a small token.

During the Thanksgiving holiday, seven families received gift cards to obtain items/food for the holiday.

The families were very excited upon receipt of the gift cards. A donation was also made to assist Mother Hubbard Daycare in South West Atlanta. Mother Hubbard provides care to low-income toddlers and school age children. Without the collaboration of Morehouse School of Medicine and Mu Phi Chapter, many of the children would not experience a Thanksgiving meal.

Through our service in the community, Mu Phi introduces the participants to Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. The community can see “Service for Humanity” in action.

As we close out the year, Mu Phi provided puzzles, socks, and other items to the residents at Glenwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. A donation was made to Mother Hubbard Daycare. This year through our partnership with Barak Obama Elementary Magnet School of Technology, Mu Phi Chapter sponsored a family of five. The children were provided with shoes and clothing. Mu Phi also provided a donation to Women at the Well. Women at the Well assists women transitioning from incarceration to the community.

Through our service, we have created partnerships throughout the community. Mu Phi had also been asked to be a resource consultant for a newly established board that plans to assess the healthcare needs of the residents of DeKalb County, GA.

NovemberSoror Pattie Mitchell spearheaded an event for the Zeta Chi Chi Chapter. Zeta Chi Chi partnered with The Savannah Authority for the Homeless and The Department of Veterans Affairs, along with other agencies in the Chatham County area, in the “2023 Stand Down for Homelessness” event. Zeta Chi Chi provided reusable bags and volunteered to help fill them. They also worked alongside Savannah's Mayor, the honorable Van Johnson.

Chi Chi Chapter's sisterly event in December would provide a great opportunity for members to come together and enjoy a fun and supportive atmosphere. Rho Phi Chapter in Raleigh, NC has been doing many community service activities for the final quarter of 2023. On October 7, 2023 at the Martin Street Baptist Church Women's Week Breast Cancer Awareness event, sorors gave facts about breast cancer and one soror told a compelling story about her journey through handling breast cancer.

Rho Phi celebrated its 2nd Annual Sarah Dupree Scholarship Banquet on October 14, 2023 and awarded a $1000.00 nursing scholarship to Emily Whitener from East Carolina University and a $500.00 Presidential needs-based scholarship to Donielle Bullock from Winston Salem State University. Sorors Vanessa Snellings and Angela Lewis participated in the Pink Holiday fashion show on December 3, 2023 for breast cancer survivors and supporters. On December 9, 2023, Rho Phi Chapter partnered with 4 other organizations to sponsor a youth community event called “Matters of the mind: Your mental health matters” to give youth ways to cope with stress, such as journaling and using stress balls.

Rho Phi ended the year with a holiday gathering at the Ale House in Garner, NC on December 10, 2023 to foster sisterhood bonds. On December 16 and 17, 2023, Rho Phi sorors participated in the Logan’s P.A.L.’s Christmas giveaway event in Garner, NC where infant, toddler, and adult clothing, toys, and money were donated.

As for leadership, Rho Phi is proud of Dr. LaDonna Thomas who has been elected Board Chair of the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON); her term as the NCBON’s Chair will begin in January 2024. Dr. Thomas, who is the Chief Nurse Practitioner for the Durham VA Health Care System, became a member of the NCBON in 2020.

On Sunday October 1, 2023, Gamma Eta Eta

Chapter hosted its Inaugural 50 Shades of Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Event by partnering with Wilson Chapel MBC in Turkey NC. Soror Dr. Sabrina Pope was the presenter at the event. The objective was to discuss the most prevalent form of cancer in American women. Soror Pope educated attendees on breast cancer FACTS to include etiology and risk factors, detection and prevention, medical diagnosis, signs and symptoms and prognosis. Black women have a higher chance of developing breast cancer before the age of 40 and the highest death rate. The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends periodic mammography and clinical breast exams. It is predicted that 1 of 8-9 women will develop breast cancer at some point in life. The breast cancer awareness sublimation is “Big or Small, Let’s Save Them All!” Attendees were also provided gift bags and treats that were made and donated by a nursing student from Fayetteville State University.

“SOIREE BLANCHE’

On Saturday November 11, 2023, Gamma Eta Eta hosted our Signature Event of the Year, the Geneane Wall Marshall Nursing Scholarship Event, at the Celtic Court Mad Boar restaurant in Wallace, NC. This year’s theme was a Soiree Blanche, meaning a white evening.

Guests were entertained with a musical selection from soloist Dr Angela Harding, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Special recognition was given to those members who served in our armed forces. Veterans Sorors April Thomas and Tammy McDuffie were pinned and thanked for the sacrifices they made and willingness to serve our country.

Members of Gamma Eta Eta stepped up a notch and presented the Medical Diagnosis Mystery Game by dressing as patients and presenting their diagnosis in a theatrical format.

Soror Rhonda Edwards received the “Soror of the Year” Award and Soror Beverly Lloyd received the “Service for Humanity” Award. The Chapter was able to award 4 nursing scholarships to deserving applicants again this year. Our 2023 Geneane Wall Marshall Nursing Scholarship recipients were Shunmas Cummings, Fayetteville State University, Teon McArthur, Fayetteville State University, Alexis Nealy, Fayetteville State University, and Emma Owens, Central Carolina Community College. Due to unforeseen circumstances the recipients were not able to attend.

On December 13, 2023, Gamma Eta Eta Chapter Sorors Harriet Bryant and Myra Brunson visited the residents of Mary Gran Nursing Center, an assisted living facility in Clinton, NC. Members delivered 61 gift bags with throw blankets, Kleenex, lotion, hand sanitizer, slippers, gloves, socks, and toboggans.

Gifts were given to 3 units in the facility. Donations were received from community businesses to help share in spreading the Christmas cheer to needed residents. Donations were also received from members of Gamma Eta Eta Chapter to help spread the joy.

Chapter partnered with Destiney Total Healthcare, The Southeastern Chapter Carolina Nurses League and Empowering Her Destiny in visiting residents of The Brian Center in Wallace, NC. Sorors Tonia Whitley-Gray who spearheaded this initiative, Donia Edwards, Phyllis Goodman, Basileus, Rhonda Edwards and LaSandra Williams were able to distribute 76 gift bags filled with personal care items to the residents. Through generous donations from members of Gamma Eta Eta, the Chapter was able to put smiles on the faces of many of the residents.

On Saturday, October 14, 2023 the Barbie & Ken Breast Cancer Walk took place in Downtown Florence, SC for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Participants were encouraged to dress as their favorite Barbie or Ken doll. Upsilon Phi Chapter donates annually to the American Cancer Society that assists with making a real difference in the fight against breast cancer. All proceeds from this event benefit the McLeod Medical Center Foundation.

On October 21st - The Phi Phi Chapter participated in the YWCA Walk Against Domestic Violence. Sorors India Nelson and Brenda Riley supported the October National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, empowering women who suffer from domestic violence.

Seniors at this community center often have many questions for Soror Brenda and she continues to provide answers or resources to get the answers for the seniors.

This event is a food packing session in which sorors helped to pack hundreds of bags of rice with added vitamins and soy to be shipped to hungry children around the world. Tennessee The last quarter of 2023 saw Alpha Chi Chapter sorors busy as usual. A Sorority Informational Session was held at Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center on October 7, 2023. Sorors were delighted to meet three knowledgeable, vibrant, and energetic professional nurses. Dean of Membership, Soror Tonise Robinson presented a well-planned and informative agenda. Members who participated in the session were Sorors Bernice Barnes, LaTasha Bolden, Lisa Humphrey, Virginia McClain, Mechele Neal, Mamie Williams and Betty Wilson. Ms. Zipporah Davis, Ms. Maria Die and Dr. Latonya King received information about Chi and expressed genuine interest.

Later in the day on October 7, 2023, Sorors Humphrey, Neal, and Sharon Pendleton represented the chapter at the Friends of Whites Creek Block Party. These sorors equipped a health information booth where blood pressures were taken, health education provided, and first aid dispensed .

Alpha Chi members were invited by Sorors Dionne Brady and Rhonda Evans to worship and participate in the Youth and Young Adult Program at True Way Church on October 15, 2023. Sorors Mechele Neal and Sharon Pendleton presented a skit, written by Soror Neal, entitled, “Say No to Drugs---TN Adventure” for National Substance Abuse Prevention month. Some of the youth at the church participated in the skit. Those in the audience enjoyed the skit and afterward, articulated their knowledge about the bad effects of drugs. Sorors in attendance were very impressed.

The chapter presented a bouquet of yellow roses with green accents to Soror Pauline Hall on October 15, 2023 for her 104th birthday. Her daughter stated Soror Hall received more than ten cards each day leading up to her birthday, not only from Alpha Chi sorors, but from around the Southeast Region. The chapter sincerely appreciates Madame Southeast Regional Director Juanita Gibbons Delaney and all sorors in the region who participated in the birthday card shower. Your sincere acts of kindness and thoughtfulness meant so much to her family and to us.

Alpha Chi Chapter commemorated Founder’s Day with the Founder’s Day Ceremony and Program followed by dinner. In attendance were the last two living charter members from May 27, 1961, June Beard and Dannie Morehead, who expressed their happiness to attend and fellowship with the members. They were presented gifts of beautiful green keepsake boxes with yellow trim made by Anti-Basileus, Soror Mechele Neal and green leather luggage tags monogrammed with Alpha Chi Chapter from Basileus Virginia McClain. 23 Sorors attended along with guest Soror Mary Burriss from Pi Chapter, Durham, NC.

As a chapter, we always remember our sorors who are physically unable to join us in service activities.

Sorors Betty Thompson and Virginia McClain visited Life Member Juanita Polite, a member of the chapter’s first line in 1962 and Soror Marilyn Myles, a longtime member, by taking flowers and lunch to them respectively. Soror Polite has been a member for 62 consecutive years.

The chapter participated in the Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church Health Fair on October 28, 2023. Sorors Kelli Fleming, Carmen Germany, Terrie Moody, Mechele Neal, and Tonya Wilson took blood pressures and dispensed health education.

With excitement and enthusiasm, Beta Sponsor Soror Beverly Brown conducted an Informational Session on November 1, 2023 at the Tennessee State University (TSU) School of Nursing. There were 14 interested students who completed applications. We eagerly await their return to campus in January. Soror Virginia McClain also attended the session.

On November 2, 2023 Alpha Chi Chapter held an Induction Ceremony for two prospective members at Metropolitan Interdenominational Church.

November 4, 2023 found the chapter participating in the Lunch and Learn series on kidney disease hosted by local partners, the Marie Kinnard Foundation and the Tennessee Kidney Foundation.

Every Monday in November, Alpha Chi Chapter participated with Sedona Taphouse Restaurant in a “Dine Out for Charity” fundraiser. The restaurant partners with local organizations monthly by donating money from selected entrees ordered by lunch and dinner patrons. We continue to raise money for our May 18, 2024 Nurses Gala, proceeds of which will pay for the Rwanda Well initiative we shared with the Region in the Fall SER Newsletter.

At the invitation of Soror Samantha Agee, Second Assistant Supreme Anti-Basileus, the Chapter worshipped at St. Anselm’s Episcopal Church on November 12, 2023. It was a beautiful service attended by nine sorors, three boosters, children and grandchildren. Soror Agee’s daughter, Lauren, participated in the service.

Soror Candace Talley represented the Chapter on November 16, 2023 at the annual Harambe Celebration given by the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) Richmond, VA Section. Rev. Dr. Shavon ArlineBradley, National President and CEO was the featured speaker.

On November 26, 2023 Alpha Chi proudly welcomed the ChiNamic Duo into the fold: Sorors Zipporah Davis and Latonya King. After the Intake Ceremony, 15 sorors joined the two new sorors for a celebratory dinner at Maggiano’s Little Italy Restaurant. These sorors are ready to provide “Service for Humanity.”

Not forgetting our partnership with Carter Lawrence Elementary School, a gift card for $200.00 was presented in November to a single mother of seven whose children attend or have attended the school. The Chapter is grateful to Soror Betty Thompson for the second $100.00 for the family.

On December 3, 2023, Alpha Chi Chapter held its annual in-person, signature event, the Dorothy Coley Edmond (DCE) Scholarship Luncheon, named after the organizer of the Chapter. The event was held at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel where guests were treated to music by the Victor Davis Easy Jazz Ensemble, lunch, and door prizes. Two TSU students, Christine Dixon and Kanecia Jones, received scholarships of $2,000.00 each. The audience enjoyed hearing the students speak about their journey and how appreciative they were for the scholarships. A silent auction and envelopes on tables increased revenue over ticket sales.

Sadly, on December 5, 2023 Life member Soror Pauline Hall passed away. The Chapter is deeply saddened.

Her family was given support by the Chapter and the Southeast Region. We sincerely thank Madame Southeast Regional Director Gibbons-Delaney and Southeast Region Chaplain, Soror Calperta Green for the resolution sent on behalf of the SER. It was read during the funeral service after a tribute by Soror Virginia McClain.

On December 6, 2023, 362 pairs of socks for men, women and children were donated to the Nashville Rescue Mission. This continues to be service that is truly needed during the winter months.

On December 20, 2023, Alpha Chi Chapter supported the same Carter Lawrence Elementary School mother of seven with a $100.00 Kroger gift card to help with the family’s Christmas dinner.

The year ended with sorors participating in Baker’s Chapel CME Church Health Fair on December 30, 2023. Sorors Samantha Agee, Zipporah Davis, Kelli Fleming and Lisa Humphrey took blood pressures, provided health education and conversed with participants on healthy living.

Chi Eta Phi Grant Writing Proposal 10/26/23—Soror Graham attended this webinar to gather more information for our chapter’s grant writing abilities.

Global Outreach Program for Missions at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church 10/29/23— Soror Graham was the Guest Host as Bethany Baptist held its annual mission outreach program for local and foreign programs. The guest speaker was Evangelist Ellis Hill from Lenoir City, TN. Luncheon with Liliana Burbano—Partnership discussions with The University of Tennessee Medical Center—Sorors Carolyn Tabors, Anti-Basileus and Bonnie Graham, Basileus met with Ms. Burbano to strategize ways to reach health information into the African American community and to discuss partnering for Kidney Disease Awareness Month (March 2024).

Chi Eta Phi Pancreatic Cancer Presentation 10/15/23—Sorors Bonnie Graham and Sola Aduloju attended and it was well received by all in attendance.

Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church Women’s Stitch Class 10/18/23—Sorors Brown, Graham, Deathridge, and Wagoner participated in the Women in the Word Devotion and Crochet event at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. It was an opportunity to learn how to crochet and spend time in prayer and worship with other women. A lot of fun that included multigenerations of women.

The Evening with the Scholars held on October 28th was a zoom meeting to discuss preparing for college life with graduating high school seniors. It was meant to discuss prioritizing studies and social activities for success while also raising scholarship funds for students. Many great comments were shared. Soror Bonnie Graham was a panelist for this discussion. Soror Debra Julius was one of the coordinators of the session with The Scholarship Committee of the Eastern District of Women of the Church of God in Christ.

Interest Meeting 2023—Soror Donna Billingsley, Dean of Membership, and the Membership Committee led our Interest Meeting on Saturday, November 4th. There were four (4) interested registered nurses who attended. The Chapter members participated and answered questions of those interested after the presentation by the Membership Intake Committee.

36th Annual Christmas Luncheon 12/2/23—Our Annual Scholarship Luncheon, Music in the Air, was one of our most fruitful programs to date. This year we had a record number of nine (9) scholarships given to high quality registered nursing students with financial needs to complete their education ($13,500.00). We had help!! Upsilon Chi has learned to partner with other organizations and individuals to help us meet our need to provide nursing scholarships. Mr. Larry Blair, a local singer in Knoxville held an event to raise funds for our scholarships. It was the first year, but it raised $1,500.00!!!). We also have a complimentary partnership with The University of Tennessee Medical Center who provided $9,000.00 in nursing scholarship funding. Finally, CONNECT Ministries, a community partner, sponsored $500.00 and a Memorial Scholarship in the name of our beloved Soror Hazel Adams was continued with a $500.00 donation by her family. Our chapter contributed the rest ($2,000.00).

The Larry Blair Nursing Scholarship Fundraiser was a huge success. Thanks to Mr. Blair, we received $1,500.

Christmas in Burlington 12/16/23—Sorors provided a COVID/Flu Vaccination Clinic for those in need of receiving any of these immunizations. This annual event is a community event that engages various organizations to participate to kick off the holiday season in the Burlington Community of Knoxville. Upsilon Chi Chapter has participated since it began in 2021.

Wreaths Across America 12/18/23—Sorors Beverly Finch, retired veteran, and Soror Carolyn Tabors laid wreaths across the graves of our fallen heroes for Christmas. This honor was dignified and helped everyone remember the ultimate sacrifice of our soldiers for us and this country. God bless America!

October Chi Week Festivities: October 14th was a day of service and sisterhood for the Chi Chi Chi Chapter. Members started the day with service by participating in the National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Walk. We ended our day celebrating sisterhood with a Chi Family Day at Shelby Farms Park. Sorors and their families enjoyed delicious food, games, and fellowship, and had an opportunity to meet and network with local nurses interested in joining our chapter. On October 16, Sorors met for our Founders Day Ritual and celebration at the Highland Church.

On October 24, the Chi Chi Chi Chapter joined the Memphis Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, as Chi Chi Chi Chapter President Soror Dr. Porshia Mahoro led a webinar for breast cancer awareness under the topic “Think Pink: Advocate. Check. Detect”. The webinar was thoroughly enjoyed by members of both organizations and community members.

On October 27, Chi Chi Chi members participated in the Baptist Women’s Hospital “Pink On and Groove On” breast cancer survivor celebration. We were joined by nursing students from Southwest Tennessee Community College.

November On November 1, Chi Chi Chi Immediate Past Basileus, Soror Dr. Artangela Henry, educated nurses from across the globe (as close as Tennessee and as far as Canada, Jamaica, Brazil and Nigeria) at the Sickle Cell Bootcamp to Promote Nursing Excellence: Train the Trainer model hosted by University of TN Health Science Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and International Association of Sickle Cell Nurses and Professional Associates. Dr. Henry is a Co-Principal Investigator on the grant that funded this educational bootcamp and a member of IASCNAPA, whose members have served to compose an evidence-based curriculum for the sessions.

On November 4, the Chi Chi Chi Chapter hosted our 2023 Nursing Scholarship Gala, with a Bridgerton Flare.

We awarded 7 scholarships to nursing students from local colleges totaling $4750.00. The afternoon was PHInomenal, and our speaker even brought words of encouragement to our scholarship recipients from Lady Whistledown, herself! The event was such a success that we have already received two $1000 scholarship sponsorships for 2024.

Soror Dr. Tracie Augusta has been chosen to participate in the prestigious Fall/Winter 2023 NLN Scholarly Writing Retreat. This exclusive program, hosted by the NLN Chamberlain University College of Nursing Center for the Advancement of the Science of Nursing Education, offers participants personalized mentoring opportunities.

As part of the retreat, Tracie will be paired with a mentor from Duke, facilitating collaboration to publish an article derived from her dissertation. Dr. Tracie Augusta, the Principal Investigator, and her team have received their first grant award titled "Hypertension Control of African Americans in an Urban Environment." This seed grant is generously provided by the Communities of

On December 20, Dr. Crystal Martin Walker joined us for an educational webinar during HIV/AIDS Awareness Month. Her presentation was entitled “Challenging HIV Stigma: Debunking Myths with Facts”.

Soror Dr. Elizabeth Watkins obtained her certificate in Nursing Informatics from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

On December 17, sorors fellowshipped for the Christmas holiday with a craft and gift exchange.

The Chi Chi Chi Chapter made our annual holiday donation to the LeBonheur Children’s Hospital Child Life Department on December 20. This donation allows us to spread cheer to children who are hospitalized during the holidays.

Soror Dr. Sheila McCarley was named DEI Committee Chair for the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetist for the 23’-24” year. The TANA Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Task Force is an ad hoc committee that designs and implements initiatives, educational opportunities, and information for members that fosters cultural sensitivity, diversity, and inclusion for the nurse anesthesia profession.

Chi Chi Chi members continued the holiday festivities by attending the Tennessee Nurses Association Christmas Party on December 27.

US Virgin Islands On December 7, 2023, Sorors Callwood, Garfield, Jones and Fletcher represented Mu Eta Chapter in its presentation of housekeeping items as well as personal care items to the residents of the Eldra Shulterbrandt Long Term Care Facility on St. Thomas.
