GUIMARﾃウS ENTRADA LIVRE FREE ADMISSION

ENQUADRAMENTO HISTÓRICO HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

A Feira Afonsina, na sua edição de 2013, mantém a linha cronológica das edições anteriores. O enquadramento histórico inicia-se com uma reunião da corte em torno de D.ª Teresa, viúva do Conde D. Henrique, que, por ser filha de Castela e estar mais próxima dos interesses da irmã (D.ª Urraca), se une ao fidalgo galego D. Fernão Peres de Trava, antevendo uma união entre o legado de D. Henrique e uma Galiza sob a influência de Castela. Esta união provoca as primeiras dissidências em 1122, com a saída dos Senhores de Ribadouro, Maia, entre outros, da corte de D.ª Teresa. Em 1125, surge a notícia que Afonso Henriques é armado cavaleiro em Zamora provocando novos abandonos na corte por parte de fidalgos até então fiéis a D.ª Teresa. O Infante (Afonso Henriques) lidera agora uma fação que se considera herdeira do desejo e do projeto pessoal do falecido Conde D. Henrique, de uma progressiva autonomia do Condado Portucalense, por via da conquista a sul, sobre os mouros. The Feira Afonsina, in its 2013 edition, will maintain the timeline of previous editions. Its historical context opens with a court meeting around D. Teresa, the widow of Count D. Henrique. As a daughter of Castile and having the interests of her sister (D. Urraca) at heart, she joins forces with a Galician nobleman, D. Fernão Peres de Trava, foreseeing a bond between D. Henrique’s legacy and a Galicia under the rule of Castile. This bond is the cause of the initial show of dissent in 1122, leading to the departure of the Lords of Ribadouro, Maia and others. In 1125, comes up the news that Afonso Henriques is knighted in Zamora, provoking new withdrawals from court by noblemen close to D. Teresa in support of her son. The Prince (Afonso Henriques) is now the leader of a faction that sees itself as the heir to late Count D. Henrique, and his wishes and personal project for the gradual independence of the County of Portugal by taking it from the Moors to the south.

Zona Envolvente do Castelo de Guimarães Como forma de proteção e de preparação para as batalhas, os militares juntam-se nas imediações do castelo montando um Arraial. O quotidiano das tropas de D. Afonso Henriques é de intenso treino. Uma série de talentosos artífices acompanha a coluna fornecendo as mais diversas necessidades (armas, roupa, comida, entre outros). Um espaço de ação contínua no qual o visitante poderá encontrar inúmeras possibilidades de participação.

MILITARY VILLAGE

Castle Surroundings The military set a camp to protect the castle and to prepare for battle. The daily life of D. Afonso Henriques’ troops is an intense workout. A number of talented craftsmen accompany the column providing a variety of needs (arms, clothes, food, among others). This is a place of continuous action where visitors will find numerous opportunities for participation.

QUELHO DAS DESGRAÇAS

Rua Gravador Molarinho e Rua João Lopes de Faria (junto ao Arquivo Municipal) Este é o habitat dos larápios, dos pedintes, das meretrizes, dos loucos e dos empestados. Vivendo em comunidade, são obrigados a interagir pois este é o local onde todos podem sobreviver. A esterqueira, os objetos de tortura, o pequeno altar dos renegados, as padiolas, o carro dos cadáveres, os baldes da água de lavar feridas, entre outros, são elementos fortes deste quadro vivo.

THE MISFORTUNE ALLEY

Rua Gravador Molarinho and Rua João Lopes de Faria (next to Arquivo Municipal) This is the home of thieves, beggars, prostitutes, the insane and the diseased. Living in community, they are forced to interact, since this is where everyone can survive. The dunghill, torture objects, the renegades’ small altar, the stretchers, corpses’ car, water buckets to wash the wounds, among others, are strong elements of this tableau.

Convento de Santa Clara Os mais devotos ao nível religioso dedicavam uma parte do seu tempo na criação de doces “pecados”. Uma mostra de doces de origem secular.

Convento de Santa Clara The most religiously devout dedicated a part of their time to the creation of sweet “sins.” A show of secular pastry.

O ESCONDERIJO

Rua de Santa Maria Naquele canto escondido habita uma família por alguns considerada de loucos… Loucos porque decidiram não crescer e apenas se sentem felizes junto dos mais novos. Neste espaço, estes antigos mestres ensinarão a miúdos e graúdos as técnicas da escrita antiga e ainda lhes contarão as histórias e lendas que aprenderam ao longo da vida!

THE HIDEAWAY

Rua de Santa Maria In that hidden corner lives a family of madmen, as some put it... Madmen because they decided not to grow up and are only happy in the company of the younger ones. Here, these ancient masters will teach kids and grown-ups alike ancient writing techniques and will also tell them some of the stories and fables they have learned in the course of their lives!

“AOS OLHOS DE D.ª TERESA”

Zona Envolvente do Castelo de Guimarães Afonso Henriques havia sido convencido por alguns senhores do norte, e pelo constante clima de insatisfação e revolta sentido nas ruas do condado atribuído a seu pai, a rumar em confronto contra as tropas de sua mãe, D.ª Teresa, de forma a evitar uma regência tutelada por Castela. Com tais notícias, D.ª Teresa vê-se forçada a reunir os seus principais conselheiros e mais fiéis seguidores, procurando encontrar a melhor solução para a crise instalada. Os argumentos a favor de Castela ou a favor do alargamento do condado a sul são muitos e aparentemente incompatíveis. Não parece haver forma de se evitar o conflito.

“IN THE EYES OF D. TERESA”

Castle Surroundings Afonso Henriques had been persuaded by some Lords from the North, and by the constant climate of disaffection and insurgency felt on the streets of the county granted to his father, to head for a confrontation with his mother’s troops in order to prevent a Castile-dominated regency. Faced with such a prospect, D. Teresa is forced to summon her main counsellors and most loyal followers, looking to find the best solution for the crisis that had broken out. The arguments in favour of Castile or in favour of expansion beyond the county’s southern borders are many and apparently incompatible. There does not seem to be a way of avoiding conflict.

SÁBADO, 14 DE SETEMBRO, 22H00

“OS REFORÇOS DO MESTRE”

Zona Envolvente do Castelo de Guimarães Quando Afonso Henriques decidiu partir rumo a S. Mamede, apoiado pelas tropas e milícias de alguns senhores do condado, foi alertado pelo seu mestre e aio, Egas Moniz, das dificuldades da batalha. Uma significativa fação do seu corpo militar encontravase ainda a sul, a defender as fronteiras do condado da mourama. Afonso decidiu não esperar pelos reforços e foi ao encontro da peleja. Regressado das batalhas a sul, e ainda sem serem contados os mortos ou recuperados os feridos, o batalhão de Egas Moniz é informado das novas e da proximidade de mais um confronto armado. Chegarão estes homens a tempo de apoiar Afonso? Conseguirão estes homens tornar-se os “Reforços do Mestre”?

“THE SCHOOLMASTER’S REINFORCEMENTS”

Castle Surroundings When Afonso Henriques decided to leave for S. Mamede, supported by the troops and militias of some county lords, he was warned by his Schoolmaster and Tutor (Egas Moniz) against the hardships of the battle, since a significant faction of his military corps was still in the south defending the county’s borders from the Moors. Afonso decided not to wait for reinforcements and went to the battle. As they returned from combat in the south, the dead still not counted and the injured not rescued, this contingent of Egas Moniz is apprised of the latest news and yet another impending war. Will these men be capable of supporting Afonso? Will they manage to become the “Schoolmaster’s Reinforcements?”

Os visitantes da Feira Afonsina podem viajar mais longe nos costumes e tradições da época de D. Afonso Henriques, participando em oficinas e workshops. Estas atividades carecem de inscrição prévia no Jardim dos Infantes (Largo Martins Sarmento). Visitors can go further in the customs and traditions of Afonso Henriques’s time, participating in workshops. These activities require prior registration at Infantes Garden.

OFICINAS DE TINTURARIA, FELTRAGEM & TECELAGEM

Nestas oficinas procuram-se explorar as técnicas utilizadas para a preparação de alguns tecidos. Nestes momentos, as experiências rondarão algumas técnicas de tinturaria com plantas que darão cor aos materiais. Poderá também feltrar lã de ovelha e transformar uma porção de lã cardada, ou mesmo tecer um pouco de tecido num tear rústico. O material usado será lã ou linho.

DYEING, FELTING & WEAVING WORKSHOPS

These workshops will explore the techniques used in the preparation of certain fabrics. Participants will experiment with some plant-based dyeing techniques to colour the materials. They will also be able to felt sheep wool and transform a portion of carded wool and even weave a piece of cloth on a rustic loom. The material used will be wool or linen.

A FERRO E FOGO

O centro da atividade centra-se na forja. Os mais diversos metais poderão ser moldados pelo visitante de forma a construir a sua própria lembrança.

FORGING AHEAD

Activities will be centred on the forge. Visitors will have the opportunity to shape a wide diversity of metals and will be able to create their own mementoes.

“DE ARTE VENANDI CUM AVIBUS” (A ARTE DE CAÇAR COM AVES)

As aves de rapina foram sempre fiéis companheiras da nobreza nas suas caçadas, sendo criadas e treinadas para o efeito. Neste espaço, o visitante poderá ter contacto com este tipo de aves, bem como aprender algumas curiosidades sobre os espécimes e ainda algumas técnicas de falcoaria.

“DE ARTE VENANDI CUM AVIBUS” (ON THE ART OF HUNTING WITH BIRDS)

Birds of prey have always been loyal companions of the nobility in their hunts, being bred and trained for the purpose. Visitors will have the opportunity to get acquainted with this kind of bird, as well as learn some interesting details about the specimens and some falconry techniques.

AO SERVIÇO D’AFONSO HENRIQUES

Todos os dias, o visitante terá a possibilidade de trajar e viver segundo o quotidiano militar. As atividades têm abordagens diferentes, desde o treino militar e respetivas patrulhas a outras atividades como o tratamento de animais, a preparação de refeições ou mesmo o fabrico e reparação de armas e vestes.

IN THE SERVICE OF AFONSO HENRIQUES

Visitors will be able to dress up and live each day according to day-to-day military code. Activities follow different approaches, from military training and patrolling to the treatment of animals, the preparation of meals and even the manufacture and repair of weaponry and clothing.

Subject to prior booking, a number of people will have the opportunity of having lunch or dinner in the military camp.

OFICINA DE CONSTRUÇÃO DE BONECOS

A construção e manipulação de bonecos é uma arte secular. Nestes workshops os participantes poderão ter contacto com estas atividades. Um programa vocacionado para as famílias.

PUPPET BUILDING WORKSHOP

Building and manipulating puppets is a centuries-old art. In these workshops, participants will get acquainted with these activities. This programme is aimed at families.

NA PELE DE UM GUERREIRO

Os visitantes poderão passar uma parte do dia com os militares, efetuando as lides destes. Treino, preparação de armamento e atividades de lazer são algumas das valências deste programa.

IN A WARRIOR’S SHOES

Visitors can spend part of the day with the soldiers, joining them in their activities. Training, preparing weapons and leisure activities are just some of the components of this programme.
