Meet the

Kennedys W

hen Jordan Kennedy, DMD, and Maegen Kennedy, PAC, founded Windermere Dental & Medical Spa, they did so with the vision of changing the client experience — and it’s working. People are noticing. WDMS started from scratch one year ago and has seen tremendous growth ever since. “One of the biggest misconceptions about our dental office is that we only do cosmetic dentistry,” Dr. Kennedy says. “We perform all aspects of comprehensive dentistry, from small children to the elderly. We’re a family dental practice.” PA Kennedy adds, “Our reputation for providing a higher level of care, customer service and convenience is wellknown in the communities we serve.”

Get to Know Maegen Kennedy, PA-C PA Kennedy is the co-founder of WDMS and founder of Fleek Brows 8

Central Florida Lifestyle | October 2018

Microblading & Training. She is a board-certified PA who earned her degree at Nova Southeastern University. She believes the secret to a successful result is education, experience, client relationship and an aesthetic eye. Her expertise in the field has led to opportunities for her to collaborate and train other providers around the country. PA Kennedy was hand-selected by Nestle Galderma to be a national GAIN trainer. PA Kennedy is well-known for using blunt tip micro-cannulas for injectables. This technique minimizes pain, downtime, bruising, swelling, redness and other undesired outcomes.

Get to Know Jordan Kennedy, DMD Dr. Kennedy is the co-founder of WDMS. He graduated from Nova Southeastern University and has been practicing general dentistry since 2006. He sold his office in Austin, Texas to move near family in Orlando. He is highly trained in all forms of dentistry, including implants, veneers, Invisalign, root canals and extractions. Dr. Kennedy recently completed the 10-month long AAID Maxi Implant Course in Fort Lauderdale. He understands that dental visits are stressful. At WDMS, the focus is on client comfort, minimal pain, customer service and natural-looking results. “Instead of being stressed, our clients look forward to their dental visit,” he says.

The Dental Spa Modern and innovative dentistry is extremely important to Dr Kennedy. He uses a digital intraoral scanner that shows teeth wear, shifting and gum recession over time. It also shows how the teeth will look after Invisalign treatment. “There’s no more guessing if the gums are receding or if a tooth is wearing

down. We can track it with our scanner over a client’s lifetime. It’s a game changer,” Dr. Kennedy says. Most PPO dental insurances are accepted at WDMS, and an in-house membership plan is offered for $299 a year. The membership includes x-rays, exams, custom bleaching trays and two cleanings per year with fluoride. Along with those services, it also includes 20 to 30 percent off all other dental services. “There has been a high demand for the kind of dental experience, convenience and affordability that we offer our clients,” Dr. Kennedy says. The Medical Spa PA Kennedy offers cutting edge, nonsurgical cosmetic treatments. Her proven, natural-looking results have caught the attention of celebrity clients. Her approach to aesthetics is clear. “I don’t want to make you look like someone else, just the best version of yourself,” she says. PA Kennedy created signature treatments, as she believes combination therapy is best. These treatments include TMJ Remedy for clients who grind or clench their teeth; The Natural Difference, which improves acne scars, stretch marks, pores and wrinkles while tightening the skin; HD-Sculpt, a technique that uses Sculptra Aesthetic to slow down the aging process, improve skin quality and lift the face; and Special Occasion Prep to help clients look their best for any milestone event. During the consultation, PA Kennedy customizes a program that fits each client’s individual needs and lifestyle. She enjoys educating clients on different ways they can slow down, correct, or prevent age-related changes. She evaluates everything from skincare and vitamins to external and internal factors such as lifestyle and hormone changes.

Apple Cider Cocktails for Fall These fall cocktail ideas put a new spin on apple cider. By Lyndsay Fogarty

E

veryone knows when pumpkin spice season has arrived. Pumpkin spice lattes are everywhere and everything in the grocery store has an original as well as a pumpkin flavor. But fall is also all about the apple, and your cocktails shouldn’t neglect this refreshing autumnal fruit. That doesn’t mean you should shake up an overly sweet Appletini or Washington Apple shot. It’s all about warm spices like cinnamon when it comes to a modern apple cocktail and, of course, the apple cider. This fall, gather your besties and taste test these classic cocktails with an apple cider twist. Apple Cider Sangria: Place your favorite autumn fruits, such as pears, cranberries and a selection of apples, at the bottom of a pitcher then fill it with a mixture of apple cider, white wine, club soda and a couple cinnamon sticks. You can even add some vodka or brandy if you like your cocktail on the stronger

side. Don’t forget to eat the boozy fruit when you’ve finished the pitcher.

Marnier and add a splash of lime juice if you want a hint of tartness.

Apple Cider Moscow Mule: Make your usual Moscow Mule with vodka, lime juice and ginger beer over ice then add apple cider and your preferred type of apple for a garnish. It gives just a touch of fall to this trendy cocktail.

For any apple cider based cocktail recipes you’re making this fall that call for vodka, consider infusing your own apple pie vodka for another layer of flavor. All you need to do is place sliced apples and cinnamon sticks in a mason jar then fill it all the way up with vodka. Seal it and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving. Step aside, pumpkin spice. With these cocktails, this might just be the year of apple pie flavors.

Apple Cider Mimosas: This one requires one simple swap: apple cider in place of orange juice. Whether you prefer a full glass of champagne with a splash of apple cider or a half-and-half ratio, it will still taste like fall in a glass — especially if you add a cinnamonsugar rim. Apple Cider Margaritas: This recipe also calls for a cinnamon-sugar rim, and it offers some liberty in regards to the ingredients. All you really need is your favorite tequila, Triple Sec and apple cider, but you can sub in Grand

Costume Predictions of 2018 Two internet search platforms teamed up to analyze their data and make their best guesses for this year's Halloween costumes. By Lyndsay Fogarty

I

t's almost time for tricks and treats on Halloween night. So what costumes will be trending this year? Last month, Lyst, a global fashion search platform, partnered with Pinterest to review user data in an effort to predict what costumes we'll be seeing at our front doors. The experts analyzed user activity, including searches and saves, as well as global trends over the past year. The data showed that consumers begin to search and plan for their costume as early as spring. Here are their best guesses for the top 10 most popular costumes this Halloween in the order of popularity.

1. Tonya Harding: Earlier this year, the movie I, Tonya brought back '80s hair and makeup along with cheesy performance outfits. All you need for this costume is a leotard, a crimper, a scrunchie and a pair of skates. 2. A Riverdale Character: Trick-or-treaters are expected to pull a preppy look from this Netflix show that is based on the Archie comics. Betty and Jughead should be the most mimicked characters with Peter Pan collar tops, fluffy pink sweatshirts, beanies and fur-lined denim jackets. 12

Central Florida Lifestyle | October 2018

3. A '90s Icon: From Clueless to Kurt Cobain and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the Spice Girls, it's all about '90s nostalgia. Think brands like Skechers and Tommy Hilfiger as well as pieces like halter tops, crop tops and chokers when putting together the look. 4. A Warrior of Wakanda: Princess Shuri of Black Panther, complete with half-moon braids, tribal markings and chunky gold cuffs, is expected to make many appearances. This character's modernday girl power vibe makes the costume fitting for trick-or-treaters and party goers. 5. A Flamingo: Not only is this an easy DIY costume idea, but you can also dress up something you already have in your closet, like a pretty pink co-ord set, romper or leggings. 6. Edna Mode: When The Incredibles 2 finally came back to the big screen, so did Edna Mode's avantgarde look. You just need black round-frame glasses, an a-line dress and a black bob wig to match this resident fashion designer.

7. An Abba-Inspired Dancing Queen: Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again inspired this disco-era costume prediction. Dust off your white platform boots, fringe blouses and metallic accessories to play the part. 8. A Cosmic Fairy: Fashion drew inspiration from crystals and celestial bodies this year, so this prediction isn't a stretch. Pull the look together with the shimmer of Milky Way makeup, crystal accessories and uniquely bright hair colors. 9. F rida Kahlo: This popular Mexican artist was the epitome of a strong woman, so it's no wonder girls of all ages want to replicate her colorful spirit with off-the-shoulder, embroidered blouses and flower crowns this Halloween. 10. A Cow: You can blame Doja Cat and her viral song "Mooo!" for this one. A bonus is that any cow print clothing or accessories you use for your Halloween costume will get you free nuggets on the next Chikfil-A Cow Appreciation Day.

Ketogenic Diet Isn’t the Silver Bullet for Weight Loss By Vishwas Vanar, M.D., UCF Health

T

here has been a lot of buzz about the popular ketogenic diet, and many people have turned to this strict diet plan in hopes of losing weight in a short amount of time. The diet is centered on low-carb, high-fat foods like meat, fish, eggs, cheese, low-carb veggies and avocados. The original keto (low protein keto-amino acid) diet was recommended for patients with chronic kidney disease to possibly slow the decline in renal function. Current popular iteration of the keto diet focuses on creating a starvation state (ketosis) in the body by limiting caloric intake to less than 1,000 calories per day. There is obviously some weight loss associated with such drastic caloric restriction — usually from muscle mass breakdown, which may be potentially detrimental to overall health. Drastically reducing carb intake can make a patient weak, dizzy and can even weaken the immune system and slow one’s metabolism. Although patients may lose weight fast, most patients will gain all the weight back once they return to a normal diet, as underlying eating behavior is unchanged. Additionally, high-fat diets can be dangerous for patients with heart or other health issues. Nutrition-based weight loss is a complex issue governed by various factors, including hormones, genetics, behavior and exercise patterns. Any diet modification should focus on gradual calorie reduction combined with an exercise regimen that suits your activity level. You should discuss any diet with your doctor before starting. 14

Fighting the Flu By Larissa Hamblin

I

t’s that time of the year again when people start to question whether they need the flu vaccine to make it through the winter. Flu season typically goes into full-effect at the end of the fall. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months get vaccinated and to do so by the end of October. It typically takes two weeks for the antibodies in the vaccine to begin protecting your body. However, the CDC also says that if you miss the recommended deadline, any time after is better than not getting a vaccine at all. Health organizations like the CDC are unable to predict exactly when flu season will be at its peak, how severe it will hit or how long each person may have the flu. It is also difficult to predict if new flu viruses that the vaccine doesn’t cover will erupt mid-season. Flu vaccines are updated every year to better match the viruses that are expected to be prominent during the season. This year, the B/Victoria component was changed and the influenza A(H3N2) component was updated, according to the CDC. A nasal spray flu vaccine is also available this year and is an option for individuals who don’t handle needles well. It is approved for people between the ages of 2 and 49 and should not be taken by pregnant women. The CDC predicts that anywhere between 9.2 million and 35.6 million people are affected by the flu each year and approximately 9 percent of those infected go to the hospital. To help prevent the flu, in addition to the flu shot, the Cleveland Clinic suggests taking a daily multivitamin, consuming a quality amount of Vitamin D, washing and sanitizing your hands, eating a nutrientrich diet, and getting a solid night’s sleep to maintain a healthy immune system.

4 Breast Cancer Awareness Tips

T

his October is a time to stand with those who are fighting breast cancer, to celebrate those who have survived and to live life for those lost the battle. According to the Susan G. Komen organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States. However, it can be successfully treated. Screening tests such as mammograms can detect cancer at its earliest stages when chances for survival are the highest. That’s why it’s so important to schedule regular screening tests according to the recommendations for your age group and risk factors. The organization notes that in 2018, it was estimated that there would be 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 40,920 breast cancer deaths in women. Additionally, 2,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 480 breast cancer deaths were predicted in men. Susan G. Komen recommends the following:

1. Know your risk •T alk to both sides of your family to learn about your health history •T alk to a doctor about your risk of breast cancer

2. Get screened • Talk with a doctor about which screening tests are right for you if you are at higher risk • Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk • Have a clinical breast exam at least every three years starting at age 20, and every year starting at age 40 3. Know what is normal for you See a doctor if you notice any of these breast changes: • Lump, hard knot or thickening inside the breast or underarm area • Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast • Change in the size or shape of the breast • Dimpling or puckering of the skin • Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple • Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast • Nipple discharge that starts suddenly • New pain in one spot that doesn’t go away 4. Make healthy lifestyle choices • Maintain a healthy weight • Add exercise into your routine • Limit alcohol intake • Limit menopausal hormone use • Breastfeed, if you can Source: Susan G. Komen

How to Stress Less By Brittany Tai and Jessica Green

S

tress can get the best of all of us. We’re only human and, naturally, we sometimes worry. However, our lives don’t have to be consumed by stress. There are ways to keep it from interrupting our daily routines. According to mental health counselors, to begin de-stressing, you need to realize that you are, in fact, stressing. If you find yourself regularly thinking and worrying about the future, feeling tension in your body or regular tiredness during the day, chances are something is getting under your skin.

16

Central Florida Lifestyle | October 2018

Stress can affect you in many ways that you may not notice. It can make you push yourself away from friends or family, it can cause poor performance in work or activities, and it can even take a toll on your body, increasing your chances of getting sick. Occasional physical and psychological challenges are OK. They can actually be quite strengthening, so the idea isn’t to avoid all stressful situations. Just try to keep them to a minimum. One way to keep your stress levels low is by doing enjoyable activities whenever possible. If your career requires you to work at a desk

most of the time, play an online game like Sudoku or a Crossword puzzle for 10-15 minutes, just so you can relax and move your concentration to something other than work. If your job requires you to stand and move about, wear comfortable and loose clothing to allow your joints to move freely and not be constrained. Finally, one of the greatest and most convenient ways to keep your stress levels down is to breathe and stretch. This will relax any tense areas, and though it won’t completely take your stress away, it will ease tense areas so your body can relax even if your mind doesn’t.

How to Fight Back Against

Estate Fraud Q:

Three years before my mother died, she prepared a last will that distributed her assets equally to each her four children. After she died, in his attempt to disinherit everyone but himself, my brother produced a new last will that left everything to him. He used it to file a probate. The new will was prepared the day before my mother died. We learned of the new will when we each received a letter from the probate attorney naming our brother as personal representative and sole heir. What actions can my siblings and I take to prove the new will is fraudulent?

By Kristen M. Jackson, Jackson Law P.A.

A:

Inheritance wars are like the scares that occur during Halloween Fright Night, when hibernating rivalries between siblings surface from their sleepy hollows like headless horsemen intent upon decapitating the rights of other beneficiaries and stealing it as their own. Naively, parents believe their children profoundly love one another without any idea that animosity, bitterness and bad blood between siblings over perceived wrongs from their distant pasts can erupt into future hostility. Hostility begins when parents choose one child they believe will be the most responsible as executor of their estate and will distribute the as-

sets to beneficiaries according to the parent’s wishes. Unfortunately, more often than imaginable, an executor manipulates, forges, recreates or disposes of original will documents to gain a larger portion, if not all, of the estate inheritance. Sadly, in today’s electronic age, it’s easy to manipulate estate documents. There are many signs of fraudulent manipulation by an executor or beneficiary intending to steal from others named to receive inheritance. Consider the following examples of fraudulent actions that signify dishonest behavior by beneficiaries or nonbeneficiaries. •D eliberately Disposing of a Will to force a court decision. If one child learns their inheritance is less than that of another sibling, simply destroying a last will forces the court to make the final decision of inheritance distribution and will most often include the disinherited child. •F raudulently Changing Pages Within a Will to benefit one beneficiary over another. In today’s elec-

tronic age it’s not difficult to reproduce pages and language of existing documents. It may only require a single page change to the language of beneficiary distribution. •P reparing a Fraudulent Will, Changing Pages or Forging Signatures. In this age of computers, scanners, graphic computer software and colored printers, it has become easy to prepare documents, change pages to a set of documents, scan a person’s signature and manipulate the signatures into color so they appear original. Precautions can be taken to prevent someone from committing estate fraud. Consider appointing two executors, discussing your estate plan with family members or beneficiaries who are included in your will, and notifying beneficiaries about the inheritance specifics. If you suspect estate fraud, you should immediately contact a probate litigation attorney to represent you against the dishonest headless horseman to prevent them from stealing the family inheritance and disappearing as a spirit into the night.

You want your child to thrive in a warm environment where they feel cared for and loved while you’re away, and you also want them to begin developing the building blocks of their education. As Avalon Park’s premier childcare provider, Ladybird Academy does just that, combining preschool early learning and education with quality care for children ages six weeks through 12 years. Infants and toddlers are introduced to letters, numbers, shapes and colors in preparation for the Abeka curriculum that begins at age 3. This curriculum focuses on academic, cognitive, intellectual, social and language development, allowing educators to build a solid foundation for success in each student’s academic journey. “Most parents choose our school because they want their children to learn at an early age,” Quality Assurance Manager Linzi Hansla says. “They want to know that once their child enters Kindergarten, they will already have the foundation for their education and will be prepared for the next stage.” The state-of-the-art facility includes an enrichment room with iPads, iMacs and smart tables. One Mom’s NICU Story The Krueger family experienced the highest level of care and support at Florida Hospital for Children when their daughter, Cora, was born prematurely. sionate and gentle at the same time. They are people who care for tiny humans — people who call them by their names and who become invested in their well-being — and not just because it’s their job. Everyone, from the nurses, nurse practitioners and neonatologists to the dieticians, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, lymphedema, music therapists, social workers, lactation consultants and many others, each had a tremendous impact on my experience and on me. These professionals understand that even with all the support in the world, the NICU can still be a lonely place. They know that the family needs just as much care as the patient.

aving a baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) isn’t something you’re ever prepared for. You just have to accept it as your reality and try not to drown in it all. You get used to the chorus of alarms as you walk down the hall. The parent badges you stick on your shirt each day. The brave faces you put on to hear the bad news. The broken feeling of leaving your newborn at the hospital… My daughter, Cora, was born at 29 weeks, suffering from intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), weighing only 1 pound, 4 ounces. I knew the Florida Hospital for Children NICU was where Cora needed to be. After rounds on the first day, I knew she was in the right hands. Picture a parade of specialists with rolling computers, each person bringing their own insight and expertise. They called Cora “feisty” — they knew her already. The entire team is smart and confident, but they are compas-

it. They were there for the dramatic twists and turns of a dreaded 2 a.m. phone call saying something was wrong. They were there for the suspense and the cliffhangers as we worried about blood sugar levels or MRI results. They were there for the little triumphs of first bottle feedings or rock star nursing sessions. They were there for the love story that unfolded when we held our tiny girl for the very first time. After 86 days, we left the hospital to begin a new chapter of Cora’s story. But we will never forget the experience we had and the people who cared for us — the people who showed me my daughter’s strength and reminded me of my own.

How to Live Your Best Florida Lifestyle

It’s natural to feel the pull to be outside, and these retractable products make the outdoors more comfortable.

By Chuck LaPeters, New Horizons - Go Retractable!

A

ccording to a study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, if you want to feel more alive, you need to go outside. October in Florida is usually the first month that offers a break from the heat, so Floridians want to be outside more. Unfortunately, the love bugs and mosquitoes are still out in full force. If you find yourself trapped inside your home by these pesky insects, motorized retractable screens just might be the answer for you. Motorized retractable screens give you the ability to be outside, enjoying the fresh air, while keeping those pesky bugs at bay. Then, once you are ready

to feel the full effect of the outdoors, just click the button on your remote and the screens will retract out of sight until you need them again. These are some of the most popular options. • M otorized Retractable Screens for Shade and Privacy: The screen mesh comes in a variety of colors and ventilation options, so you can have a maximum cross breeze or up to 100 percent blockage for shade and privacy. They can be installed on the inside or outside of your home as well as on your pool cage for ultimate flexibility. If you're building or rebuilding a screen enclosure, they can even be integrated into the design of the enclosure. • M otorized Retractable Awnings: Both practical and beautiful, they are available in hundreds of colors and provide shade on demand. Retractable awnings provide much-needed protection from the sun and make a big difference when you want to be outside with family and friends.

Richard Ryan, the lead author of the study mentioned above, says, “Nature is fuel for the soul." So, if you want to spend more time enjoying the Florida lifestyle without mosquitoes buzzing in your ear then give retractable screens a try and go outside.

HOW TO GET ON TRACK WITH YOUR ORAL HEALTH The team at Phan-tastic Smiles can help you keep your mouth healthy and beautiful with a variety of restorative dental procedures.

A

s we age, it’s more important than ever to manage our health properly. We know when we should schedule our first colonoscopy and how often we need a mammogram. We know that yearly check-ups with our primary care physician are critical for monitoring our cholesterol and blood pressure levels as well as managing any health issues. But what about our oral health? “Dentistry isn’t just about keeping your smile beautiful,” Dr. Cuong T. Phan of Phan-tastic Smiles says. “It’s about overall health. The link between our mouth and the rest of our body is one that shouldn’t be ignored as we age.” Not only can bacteria in the mouth cause infection that leads to periodontitis but it can also cause problems in the rest of the body, including diabetes, heart disease and gastrointestinal illnesses, if left untreated. Additional issues arise when teeth that have broken down restrict individuals from eating a healthy diet because they’re unable to chew. No matter how long it’s been, it’s never too late to get on track with our oral health. The Root of the Problem Some patients don’t consider restorative dentistry because they’re embarrassed. What they don’t realize is that people are outliving their second set of teeth because they’re living longer than expected. According to a 2017 report by

26

Central Florida Lifestyle | October 2018

the National Center for Health Statistics, the average life expectancy in the United States is 79 years, but many individuals are living well into their 90s. Along with the natural aging process comes the wearing down of teeth. We should always practice proper oral hygiene, such as brushing our teeth at least twice a day, flossing daily and scheduling regular cleanings, but the techniques that our dentists used for cavities when we were younger could now be wearing out. “There is no reason for patients to feel ashamed about the condition of their teeth,” Dr. Phan says. “Whether you may have neglected your oral health in your younger years or nature is just taking its course, my staff and I are here to help you restore your smile without judgment.” A common oral health trend is that dentists are providing patients with

their 3rd set of teeth through basic treatments using crowns or dentures as well as implants, which Dr. Phan frequently uses to replace missing teeth. He recently completed a memorable restorative dental treatment for a patient in his 70s. After 15 years of not being able to eat solid food, he is now eating apples. Those outcomes mean the most to Dr. Phan. “When I’m able to help a patient get back to enjoying solid food, which others take for granted, I couldn’t be more proud,” he says. The Basics of Restorative Dentistry Phan-tastic Smiles offers a number of procedures that will restore a patient’s smile to its original state, and Dr. Phan works directly with patients to determine which one is best for their situation. After learning about all of their options, the patient makes the final decision.

“It’s my responsibility to provide all of the details regarding each individual case and the ways each treatment option could provide different outcomes,” Dr. Phan says. “It’s up to the patient to decide which treatment they will be most comfortable with.” From one-visit crowns and veneers (CEREC) to tooth-colored fillings and dentures, there are many basic options that will provide the desired results. Even more, these procedures can be done in a timely manner so patients can get back to their usual routine in no time. Going More In-Depth Dr. Phan performs several indepth procedures to restore the teeth and gums. Similar to dentures, mini implants are used to replace missing or

broken teeth. Mini implants are identical to traditional dental implants but are narrower in diameter (about 2 millimeters wide). They are used mainly for stabilizing dentures, particularly the lower denture. This is an ideal treatment option for patients who don’t have enough jawbone to support a fullsized implant or are seeking a more affordable implant option. The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is offered for patients with gum recession. Using this technique, Dr. Phan makes a small pinhole, loosens the gum tissue, places collagen and guides the gum tissue down over the exposed root structure. Since there are no grafts, incisions or sutures, patients can expect minimal discomfort following the procedure. They can also expect a quicker recovery time than with traditional grafting as well as more natural looking, longlasting results. An Easy Way to a Phan-tastic Smile With 2018 quickly coming to a close, it’s not too early to make a New Year’s resolution. A visit to Dr. Phan at Phan-tastic Smiles can get patients on track with their oral health even before it’s time to ring in 2019.

Meet Dr. Phan Dr. Cuong T. Phan has been practicing for over 19 years and is experienced in all areas of dentistry, including endodontics, periodontics, crowns, oral surgery, implants and cosmetic dentistry. “From routine check-ups to smile makeovers, we do it all at Phan-tastic Smiles,” Dr. Phan says. “This saves valuable time for patients.” He is humbled to be the recipient of the prestigious Mastership Award, the highest Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) honor available and one of the most respected designations within the dental profession. Less than 1% of general dentists throughout the U.S. and Canada have earned this title (MAGD). Dr. Phan also serves as a Dental Board Examiner for the state of Florida.

Community Preservation This resident’s Central Florida roots are the foundation for his passion to preserve the natural Florida

A

s Central Florida has experienced explosive growth over the years, Stockton Reeves has deep, local roots that provide the foundation for his desire to conserve and preserve our environmental treasures. A third-generation resident, he graduated from Winter Park High School and went on to military school before graduating from the University of Florida. He later earned his MBA through the Crummer Graduate School at Rollins College. Stockton is a partner at Architects Design Group (ADG) and is the executive director of the Center for Public Safety. He works with cities and counties across the nation, helping to plan and design police, fire and emergency operations facilities. In the early 1980s, ADG was the architect of record for the Florida Solar Energy Center, then touted as the world’s most energy-efficient building and a leader in photovoltaic research and

clean renewable energy. Since then, the firm has been an industry leader in planning public facilities that focus on saving energy and water. ADG designed the first LEED-certified law enforcement facility in the state of Florida. Stockton and his family have long been friends with Dr. Peter Pritchard, an Oviedo-based zoologist who is widely recognized as the world’s foremost expert on turtles. In the late 1980s, Dr. Pritchard developed a plan to lead expeditions through the jungles of Guyana to make contact with indigenous peoples in a remote area where four species of ocean-going turtles come ashore to lay eggs. The goal of the visits was to help these species survive and thrive. Stockton, his father and his brother were on the first two expeditions. The trips were a success. the turtles and lead eco-tours for visitors to this remote part of South America. In the 1970s through the 1980s, as growth spurred development of new housing across Orange and Osceola counties, Stockton and his family spent weekends conducting archaeological excavations of Timucua habitation mounds with the Central Florida Archaeological and Anthropology Association and the University of Florida. “Much of the work was a race against time to save this invaluable part of Florida’s pre-contact history,” Stockton says. “We were trying to protect and preserve artifacts ahead of the bulldozers.” Stockton says these experiences are the reason he is so passionate about preserving Florida’s natural springs, rivers, lakes and waterways. “I cannot count the number of weekends we spent in rural parts of Osceola County or on the shore of Lake Apopka,” he says. “It gave me a unique appreciation for our ecology and natural environment.” Stockton is also an outspoken supporter of connecting and completing the Florida Trail. The trail runs from the panhandle south to a point about 55 miles west of Miami. Stockton still calls Central Florida home and is proud that his children are the fourth generation of his family to live here. He remembers a smaller community before Disney, but even today, as Central Florida has grown into a major metropolis, Stockton says he can’t imagine living anywhere else

REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE ASSOCIATES OF FLORIDA As a graduate student studying electrical engineering, George Patounakis, MD, PhD, became aware of the impact that individuals who were struggling with health issues had on him. While he was doing biomedical research at the time in the hopes that it would satisfy his desire to help people, it still felt like an indirect path. He then discovered that medicine would combine his love of science and problem solving with his passion for helping people. “I took a longer, traditional path to medicine but my background in engineering gives me a unique perspective and approach to problem solving that made it well worth the time it took to get here,” he says. Dr. Patounakis earned his medical degree from Rutgers – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey in 2009 before completing a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 2013 and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and fertility at National Institutes of Health in 2016. He was recruited by IVI-RMA Global when his fellowship ended. The facility opened its doors in Central Florida on Dec. 11, 2017, and he has been helping couples who are struggling with infertility ever since. Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Patounakis specializes in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He performs all gynecological procedures related to these specialties as well as in vitro fertilization, intrauterine insemination, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy procedures. Dr. Patounakis is a member of American Society of Reproductive Medicine and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and an interactive associate for Fertility and Sterility. He is also an adhoc reviewer for infertility journals such as Fertility and Sterility, Human Reproduction Open and Reproductive Medicine Online. He credits Dr. Alan H. DeCherney of National Institutes of Health and Dr. Richard T. Scott, Jr. of Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey with being influential

mentors in his career. He says they have showed him how to provide the latest evidence-based patient care while delivering it to patients in a compassionate manner. MARISSA MAGSINO MD “Keep calm, balance hormones and bring sexy back.” That is Dr. Marissa Magsino’s motto when it comes to practicing regenerative medicine. For the past 20 years, Dr. Magsino has worked on treating diseases and a wide array of medical conditions. Her own onset premenopausal symptoms led her to search for ways to naturally replace her own hormones and help others with similar issues. After pursuing a fellowship in functional and regenerative medicine centered on bio-identical hormone management, she developed BUMATAKO, an aging reversal technique for both men and women. The name means “I’m young again” in Filipino terms. Her specialty in functional and regenerative medicine has allowed her to invigorate not only her own life, but the lives of others. Dr. Magsino is one of the few physicians in the nation trained to perform PRP procedures for facial, vaginal and penile rejuvenation. She received her medical degree from the University of the East (Philippines) before continuing her training at Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Then, in 1997, she came down to Orlando to work as a primary care internist and in pediatrics. HILLCREST DENTAL “Every time you smile at someone, it’s an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” This quote by St. Theresa of Calcutta has been an inspiration to Dr. David J. Akkara of Hillcrest Dental as he nurtured his passion for being a part of the dental profession. Dr. Akkara earned his bachelor’s degree in neuroscience at the University of Connecticut. While there, he volunteered at the dental school, where he realized his desire to pursue a degree in dentistry. He went on to earn his dental degree at Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, which is the 2nd oldest dental school in the country, and he completed his residency at Weill Cornell Medical College and Lincoln Medical Center in New York. Throughout his time in dental school, Dr. Akkara learned what he calls “comfort dentistry,” which helps patients feel at ease during the dental experience. Specializing in restorative dentistry, he has been practicing in Central Florida for the past 11 years, performing single and multiple tooth restorations, smile makeovers and treatments to correct clenching disorders. Additionally, procedures such as ZOOM! whitening, crowns, bridges, implants and Botox help Dr. Akkara’s patients feel confident in their smiles. He is a member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and is affiliated with Trinon University’s implantology courses. He credits his residency director, Gus Momudis, as being his mentor. Through his teachings, Dr. Akkara learned the importance of treating his patients as he would want to be treated. It helped shape him into the dentist he is today. “He practiced dentistry with a gentleness I had not seen before,” Dr. Akkara says. “By his example, I learned that exceptional dental care can only be accomplished through kindness and compassion.”

Dr. Akkara chose the field of dentistry because he wanted to be a part of something bigger. He knew that to have a hand in helping people build confidence and pursue their best life he must first help them to achieve their best smile. When he isn’t practicing dentistry, Dr. Akkara enjoys participating in Crossfit and traveling the world to explore new cities and countries.

UCF HEALTH When Dr. Vladimir Neychev joined UCF Health in 2017, he brought his passion for general surgery, biochemistry, education and research with him. “Since I was young, I was drawn into surgery because I wanted to help people,” Dr. Neychev says. “When you treat surgical patients, you can see an instantaneous result.” He completed his first residency training in general surgery at the Institute of Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care “I. Pirogov” in Sofia, Bulgaria, as well as general surgery residencies at both John Hopkins Hospital and Danbury Hospital, CT, affiliated with the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Additionally, he completed a fellowship in endocrine surgery at the National Cancer Institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Neychev exemplifies the number one quality that puts UCF Health physicians apart from other physicians: he practices what he teaches. He has had a long career in medical education, teaching biochemistry and general surgery to medical students, which he finds supports him when he is in clinic and the patients take on the role of students. “An informed patient is a comfortable patient,” Dr. Neychev says. “I teach my patients about evidence-based medicine and help them to better understand their condition and the treatment options.” 38

Central Florida Lifestyle | October 2018

Dr. Neychev is highly trained and motivated to deliver the highest-quality care and most beneficial surgical management of the entire spectrum of general surgery conditions. Whether he’s performing thyroid surgery or removing a malignant tumor, Dr. Neychev makes the patient’s personal needs and comfort his top priority. “I take my time to discuss with the patient details of the surgical approaches, treatment alternatives, and risks and benefits,” Dr. Neychev says. “Knowledge is power. By educating my patients about their condition and their treatment options, together we can decide the best treatment option for them.”

A Taste of Dr. Phillips COURTESY OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF DR. PHILLIPS

This signature event by The Rotary Club of Dr. Phillips provides a taste of 20 of the area’s finest restaurants. By Larissa Hamblin

E

very November, foodies flock to the Dellagio Town Center on Sand Lake Road for a taste of Restaurant Row’s best food and beverage offerings. This year is no exception. The Rotary Club of Dr. Phillips will host A Taste of Dr. Phillips, a showcase of 20 of the area’s finest restaurants, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 11. Now in its 12th year, this event provides the opportunity to enjoy three hours of gourmet food, wine and beer, all while listening to live entertainment and shopping for the holiday season at the silent auction. Expect bites of succulent steak from The Capital Grille, a taste of fine Italian cuisine from Maggiano’s Little Italy, re-imagined American classics from Urbain 40, only the freshest sushi from Dragonfly Robata, the perfect sweet treat from Nothing Bundt Cakes and so much more. You’re sure to leave both satisfied and stuffed. In addition to the silent auction on site, you can also bid online even if you’re unable to attend. Not only can you find holiday gifts for your loved ones but you will help raise money for local charities while doing so. The Rotary Club of Dr. Phillips and The Rotary Club of Dr. Phillips Foundation have been supporting local charities and COURTESY OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF DR. PHILLIPS

nonprofits since 1979. Operating on the motto, “Service Above Self,” Rotarians are local business and community leaders who put on two signature community events each year, including A Taste of Dr. Phillips. Ticket proceeds will benefit the organizations and projects that the Rotary Club of Dr. Phillips support throughout the year. This includes A Gift for Teaching, Dr. Phillips High School projects and programs, Give Kids the World, YMCA of Dr. Phillips and Dr. Phillips Little League, among others. Last year’s event reached over 800 attendees, and Sally Kamrada, who is co-chair for this year’s A Taste of Dr. Phillips event, hopes to see over 1,000 people there this year. You must be 18 years or older to attend, and only individuals who are 21 and up will be able to indulge in the alcholic beverages. As one of the area’s largest signature events, general admission tickets are $75 and VIP tickets are available for $95. The biggest benefit to the VIP tickets is early entry into the event, which means you will be one of the first to the covered seating area. Tickets sell out fast, so Kamrada urges those who are interested in attending to purchase tickets sooner rather than later. Since A Taste of Dr. Phillips will be held on Veterans Day this year, Kamrada promises there will be a proper salute, including an appearance by a color guard and a brief ceremony with the presentation of colors.

Party Snacks

Take your Halloween party spread to the next level with these festive dishes. By Lyndsay Fogarty

W

hen you’re preparing for a Halloween party or deciding on an office potluck dish, it’s easy to get stuck in a sweet rut. After all, it’s much easier to turn desserts into ghoulish delights. It’s not difficult to add a savory element to your Halloween spread though. These ideas are both filling and festive, and they can be adapted from recipes you already have on hand. Bloodshot Deviled Egg Eyeballs: Any deviled egg recipe will do here. Just paint red lines on the egg whites with food coloring and place a black olive on the yolk. Jack-o-Lantern Stuffed Pepper: Whether your filling is inspired by Mexican or Italian cuisine, or something else all together, all you need is a handful of orange peppers for stuffing. Before you bake, cut triangle eyes and a ghoulish grin into each pepper. 48

Central Florida Lifestyle | October 2018

Make sure to bake with the tops on so it looks like a pumpkin. Mummy Baked Brie: You can go savory or sweet for this party snack. Just cut the dough into even strips then drape them over the brie to look like a mummy. Use dried fruit like cranberries or cherries for the eyes. Spider Pizza: Both regularsized pizzas and mini versions can be topped with Halloween flare. Construct a spider using pepperonis for the body, black olives for the eyes and strips of green peppers for the legs. Taco Dip Graveyard: Any taco dip can be turned into a graveyard scene. First, top it with a layer of lettuce for the grass then place several mounds of finely chopped black olives throughout to act as dirt. Baked tortillas in the shape of tombstones and trees add the final creepy element.

GREEN HALLOWEEN

Stir marshmallows into butter until melted. Stir in gelatin powder until evenly colored. Pour over popcorn and stir until evenly coated. With buttered hands, shape popcorn into 7 oval shapes. • Flatten one oval shape slightly and squeeze one end to form a ‘skull’ shape. Place onto parchment lined baking sheet. Repeat with remaining shapes. •T o decorate: Press two gumballs into each skull to form ‘eyes’. Press candy corn into skull to from ‘teeth’. Use scissors to trim candy strips and press into top for ‘hair’. Non-traditional Career Paths This past month, Dr. Barbara Jenkins, Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) Superintendent, spoke at the East Orlando Chamber’s monthly luncheon. She provided an update on how our public schools are offering alternative options for students. Did you know students can attend Orange Technical College, graduate high school as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and be debt free when they graduate? This example is just one of many opportunities. In keeping with the theme of what OCPS is providing, we have added an Art of Innovation component to Education Day. This year, vendors will be paired in villages, along with OCPS schools and Orange County Government Services who provide products or services with similar themes. No matter the industry, vendors will have interactive booths to showcase their business, engaging students in an activity to teach them something new about their business. There will still be the student performances and the fun inflatables for the

The Ghosts of October’s Past in Orlando

These Halloween events have been hosted by Orlando's most popular theme parks for decades.

By Larissa Hamblin

O

SeaWorld’s Halloween Spooktacular

rlando is known as a city with some of the most world-renowned theme parks: Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld. While visitors and locals alike enjoy these parks year-round, some of the best occasions to visit them are during October, when annual events that were founded years ago come back to give guests a scare.

This kid-friendly Halloween event was designed to have all the treats but none of the tricks when SeaWorld launched its Halloween bash back in October 2008. With dance parties and festive performances, this fright-less event was designed to target younger families. There are also trick-or-treating stations filled with candy and other goodies located throughout the park. Separate entry passes are not required to enjoy this event, unlike other Halloween theme park events, and it runs every weekend through Oct. 28.

Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights

Recognized by the sound of chainsaws and the screams from haunted houses, this Universal Studios event started back in 1991 under the name Fright Nights. The threenight-only event was held on Oct. 25, 26 and 31, and it came equipped with only a single haunted house called The Dungeon of Terror. It cost visitors a mere $12.95 per person to attend. This year, a record-setting 10th house will be on display, in addition to five scare zones scattered throughout the park and an energetic dance and acrobatics show called Academy of Villains: Cyberpunk. While the cost of a ticket is higher now, guests can prepare to be scared on 36 select nights that began in September and run through the beginning of November.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

From jack-o-lanterns in the shape of the beloved mouse to trickor-treating around the park, this after-hours Halloween event was founded back in October 1995. At the time, it only cost $16.95 per person to attend. When the party was first launched, it was a one-night only event, but it was so popular among Disney fans that it was extended to two days the following year then three days the year after that. Now, Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party can be enjoyed for a total of 34 select nights from the end of August up until Halloween night. Guests are encouraged to attend the event dressed in their best costume, or even match some of Disney’s most terrifying villains, which wasn't always the case.

ndividuals with disabilities may have a tough time transitioning upon graduation, when their peers are going off to college and getting new jobs. That's where Building Pathways, a nonprofit based in Winter Garden, steps in. Building Pathways was founded as a safe place for teens and adults with various disabilities to learn the necessary skills for independent living. Through partnerships with local businesses, Director Patty Myers and Assistant Director Jennifer Pinckney work to give participants hands-on job opportunities within their communities. They also teach participants the basic skills needed to live on their own, such as cooking healthy meals, doing laundry and working exercise into their routines. This is all done within a natural, home setting to ensure that participants feel at ease. This training takes place during full and part-time day programs that are open to individuals over the age of 15 from August to May. Participants learn how to live independently while spending quality time with others. Being able

to learn with friends and grow together makes Building Pathways a special environment that promotes togetherness and success. A curriculum-based social skills class is also offered from August to May. During the months of June and July, Building Pathways offers camp opportunities for individuals 11 years or older to come together, make lunch, play games and learn in a hands-on manner. Although they may have to learn how to do chores, the program turns these tasks into fun learning opportunities. Building Pathways participants can learn invaluable social, life and job skills that will transcend years to come. Although the programs are designed to teach them important lessons, they’re also created to help them enjoy life through activities that promote bonding and social skills, such as culinary and art classes, health and fitness training and more. By fostering independence while partaking in group activities, these young adults are able to learn what it means to make choices that

can affect an entire group, such as deciding what to make for dinner while on a trip to the grocery store. Learning these valuable skills also helps to build confidence as they become better equipped to live on their own. For these individuals, Building Pathways offers an environment that becomes not only a safe space but also a second home.
