Dear Audience Member, This month Center Theatre Group stages are home to a handful of the greatest artists in the world. Together, they’ve won Academy, Tony, Emmy, Olivier, Obie, and Drama Desk Awards, and they command respect from the West End to Hollywood. The Ahmanson Theatre plays host to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Simon Stephens, which won the 2013 Olivier Award for Best New Play and the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play. We’re also welcoming back Sir Matthew Bourne with the American premiere of his newest work, The Red Shoes, based on the legendary 1948 film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. We’ve been bringing his work to Los Angeles and America for 20 years now, since 1997’s Swan Lake, and I’m hoping we’ll be doing this for 20 more years (at least). At the Mark Taper Forum, we’re welcoming back another artist we have a long history with: Phylicia Rashad, who—after directing a few memorable productions at the Taper—is on the stage this time in Head of Passes. This is the first work we’ve produced by Tarell Alvin McCraney, one of the best young American playwrights writing today; his name is probably also familiar as the Oscar winner for Moonlight. And speaking of Hollywood awards, the very funny Paul Rudnick rolls out the red carpet at the Kirk Douglas Theatre with the World premiere of Big Night, which takes place on the day of the Academy Awards. Enjoy the show—or shows. You really should see more than one of these.

Sincerely,

Michael Ritchie artistic director, center theatre group

My wealth. My priorities. My partner. You’ve spent your life accumulating wealth. And, no doubt, that wealth now takes many forms, sits in many places, and is managed by many advisors. Unfortunately, that kind of fragmentation creates gaps that can hold your wealth back from its full potential. The Private Bank can help. The Private Bank uses a proprietary approach called the LIFE Wealth Cycle to find those gaps—and help you achieve what is important to you.

AROUND CENTER THEATRE GROUP Yees Descend on the Douglas In the 19TH century, Chinese family associations allowed Chinese-American immigrants to combine resources as they navigated the complicated landscape of American culture. Nearly two centuries later, these associations continue to exist. On July 15, members of the Los Angeles chapter of the Yee Fung Toy family association descended on the Douglas to see King of the Yees. After the show, audiences were treated to a very special talk-back, before being invited onstage to pose for a photo.

YOUNG PRODUCERS CIRCLE AT ‘FUN HOME’ Members of the Young Producers Circle mingled with the cast of Fun Home at Kendall’s Brasserie after the March 24, 2017 performance. The Young Producers Circle is our group of young professionals who support new play development and come together throughout the year for shows, events, and cultural happenings around L.A.

CULVER CITY CELEBRATES THE DOUGLAS WITH A COMMENDATION On July 24, the Mayor and City Council of Culver City honored the Douglas for Center Theatre Group’s 50 year commitment to furthering art and culture in the Los Angeles area.

GIRLS FROM PROJECT SCIENTIST DISCOVER HOW ARTISTS PUT THE “A” IN “STEAM” On July 20, future scientists and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) loving girls visited Center Theatre Group as part of a special partnership with Pasadena-based Project Scientist. As part of the visit, they met with Center Theatre Group staff and took part in interactive lessons designed to teach them how theatre artists use STEM to create the theatre on our stages.

Donors Treated to a Special Season Preview Center Theatre Group donors and board members attended a special Season Preview event in July. Held at the Bel Air Country Club, they enjoyed special presentations by Center Theatre Group staff about upcoming projects.

In response to Center Theatre Group Resident Artist Naomi Iizuka’s adaptation of a Kabuki fable, The Last Firefly, a group of 18 students in the Visual Art Department at the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts at Culver City High School created masks inspired by folktales. These masks decorated the lobby of the Douglas throughout the run of King of the Yees.

Beyond Kirk and Anne Douglas’s legendary standing in Hollywood, the famed couple have been longtime supporters of Center Theatre Group. Anne was one of our founding board members and an early fundraiser, along with Kirk, for Dorothy Chandler’s campaign to build The Music Center. And in 2004, they made a major gift that helped us found the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. Now, the two are looking back on a lifetime filled with love and drama both on and off the screen—and stage—in their book Kirk and Anne, published shortly after Kirk’s 100TH birthday and the couple’s 63RD anniversary. Below is an excerpt from the book that recounts their memories of Kirk’s Broadway turn in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Anne Douglas: No matter how successful Kirk was as a film actor and producer, no matter how at home he was in the White House and embassies abroad, he still felt a failure because he hadn’t conquered Broadway. It was an itch that needed to be scratched.

AND

KIRK ANNE:

Letters of Love, Laughter, and a Lifetime in Hollywood

When he read Ken Kesey’s debut novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, he saw its dramatic possibilities and acquired the rights…With Seven Days in May in postproduction, Kirk felt free to go to New York where he assembled a first-rate cast for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest: Gene Wilder, Ed Ames, William Daniels, and Joan Tetzel. After brilliant out-of-town reviews, opening night was set for November 13, 1963, on Broadway… I flew to New York a few days before opening night. Kirk scribbled this note and sent it over to me at the Hampshire House a couple of hours before the curtain went up. My darling— No matter what happens tonight I love you. And please know how much I appreciate your patience at my unreasonable attitude.— Boy if I were you I certainly wouldn’t want to be married to me— But thank God you’re you and thank God I’ve got you. Tonight I “walk a picket fence for you!” I’m showing off for you and if I fall down, I’ll know you still love me. But I am going to try to be a success for you and Peter and Eric. For you especially because I love you—for the kids so that when they grow up they’ll know that their old man had guts and he “tried—goddamit, I tried.” Tonight, have fun, I’ll be over my nerves and I’ll be giving a show for you—as to the rest—Fug ‘em all!— I love you— K

LATE JUNE. SUNSET. SILVER LAKE. A group of writers chat about living in Los Angeles and their upcoming projects. Among them are Hollywood showrunners, nationally produced playwrights, and award-winning screenwriters. WHAT DO THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON? They’ve all participated in the L.A. Writers’ Workshop, a Center Theatre Group program devoted to supporting authors as they create new works for the stage.

INSIDE THE WRITERS ROOM THE L.A. WRITERS’ WORKSHOP, CENTER THEATRE GROUP, AND THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN THEATRE Founded in 2005, the L.A. Writers’ Workshop invites seven local playwrights to participate in a year-long development cycle with the aim of supporting their artistry. Participating playwrights gain research assistance, dramaturgical support, a reading with professional actors, and (most importantly) a community. This May, playwright Tracey Scott Wilson (FX’s The Americans, The Good Negro) was named the Center Theatre Group 2017 Fadiman Awardee, an award which supports the commission of a new play from the recipient as well as a one-week residency at Center Theatre Group. That night in June, the Writers’ Workshop alumni were gathered to celebrate Wilson, to catch up on recent goings-on, and (of course) to discuss the state of American theatre. While Los Angeles is perhaps best known as a “film town,” the truth is that the city has a robust theatre scene and is home to many renowned playwrights. And these playwrights are not only responsible for creating exciting theatre, but also some of the most exciting (and award-winning) serialized television shows.

It hardly needs to be stated that we are living in a television renaissance. The exploits of networks such as Netflix and Hulu are so well documented that it has almost become cliché to mention them. But it should be noted that this content revolution has been fueled, largely, by playwrights. In the relatively small rolls of the L.A. Writers’ Workshop alumni association, there are over 40 writers who have worked in the television industry, including Jessica Goldberg (Hulu’s The Path), Marco Ramirez (Marvel’s Daredevil and The Defenders, and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black), Sarah Gubbins (Amazon’s I Love Dick), and Carly Mensch (Netflix’s Glow).

OF THE WORKSHOP’S NEARLY 80 PARTICIPANTS, OVER 60 HAVE HAD THEIR PLAYS PRODUCED AT REGIONAL THEATRES AROUND THE COUNTRY. Theses theatres have included the meccas of new play development such as the Actors Theatre of Louisville and Playwrights Horizons, as well as founders of the American regional theatre system including Center Theatre Group. Recent notable plays include Pipeline by Dominique Morriseau (Lincoln Center Theater), Vietgone by Qui Nguyen (Manhattan Theatre Club), and The Nether by Jennifer Haley (Royal Court Theatre, Kirk Douglas Theatre). At Center Theatre Group, we have a long history of fostering new plays. Some of our most notable World premieres have included Angels in America, The Kentucky Cycle, and Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. What makes the L.A. Writers’ Workshop special is that it allows us to also foster relationships with artists behind those works. As that night in June wound down, the attendees gathered for a toast. They spoke of community; they spoke of the future. And as Center Theatre Group Literary Manager Joy Meads raised a glass to those in attendance and the community they represent, she also toasted the future of L.A. Theatre. It’s a future that looks bright, indeed.

Center Theatre Group would like to thank Elliott Sernel and Larry Falconio for opening their home, and making this L.A. Writers’ Workshop reunion possible.

INTRODUCING TYRONE DAVIS Tyrone Davis has come home. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Center Theatre Group has been on his radar for a long time. “Being From L.A., Center Theatre Group has always been the theatre in the city,” says Davis. “I have always wanted to be an intersector between the inner-city of Los Angeles and the world of professional theatre. And being here gives me the opportunity.” As Center Theatre Group Director of Education & Engagement, he will work alongside Leslie K. Johnson (Center Theatre Group Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact), and the rest of the organization to do just that.

Center Theatre Group’s New Director of Education & Engagement

Thinks Big

Trained as an actor at California State University, Northridge and California Institute of the Arts, Davis comes back to Los Angeles from San Francisco. There, he helped launch the education program at the renowned American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T), building their Community Partnerships program from the ground up. As Community Artistic Director, he taught educational workshops, developed ancillary programs around A.C.T.’s mainstage, brought artists in to support audiences in the creation of theatre, facilitated original monologue workshops for youth who have not experienced success in conventional public schools, and commissioned community-based work. “Basically, my job,” says Davis, “was to bring theatre to the community, and community to the theatre,” in any way possible. It is work that he is excited to continue in Los Angeles. “A lot of regional theatres have just turned fifty,” says Davis. “Now, we get to look at the next fifty years and imagine what theatre can be.”

KIRK DOUGLAS: Well, after the glowing reviews in Boston, what a rude shock. The New York critics were brutal. They missed the point of the whole play and even accused us of making fun of mental patients. Then, just nine days later, the whole country was a madhouse. I was in a cab heading for the theater on Friday afternoon, November 22. Suddenly the driver swerved to the curb. With tears in his eyes, he told me the news that had just come over the radio. President Kennedy had been pronounced dead after being shot in Dallas. Lyndon Johnson would be sworn in on Air Force One as our new president. We went through the motions of the performance as if this were a normal night, but it felt like all the air had gone out of the world…

I kept the show running for five months. It was heavily in the red. I tried to buy some more time by cutting salaries, but the cast wouldn’t hear of it. I posted the closing notice and our final performance was January 25, 1964. Ironically, that was also the day of our first sneak preview of Seven Days in May. I stopped by the theater as the lights came up. When the audience saw me, they gave me a standing ovation. I felt like God was telling me it was okay to just be a movie star. Kirk and Anne: Letters of Love, Laughter, and a Lifetime in Hollywood is available on Amazon and wherever books are sold.

A Hub for Laughter, Community, and New Talent

CHISME Y QUESO IN SPRING OF 2017, THE BAR EASTSIDE LUV WAS TRANSFORMED INTO A THEATRE.

Inside the tiny Boyle Heights venue young crowds danced to 1980s pop, drank sangria, and gossiped in English and Spanish. It was quintessentially Los Angeles. It was Chisme y Queso. An event series hosted by Center Theatre Group in partnership with Eastside Luv, Chisme y Queso invited patrons and artists to gather and anonymously share their own chisme—gossip—and have it performed onstage (atop the bar) by local actors. Alongside the improvised chisme, actors performed skits by up-andcoming writers from around Los Angeles. Chisme y Queso—which is one part of a two-year community initiative in Boyle Heights funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation—was so successful in its first season, that Center Theatre Group is already planning a second season, which is set to begin this fall.

The intention of Chisme y Queso was to allow Center Theatre Group to meet new people in our surrounding communities, to connect with our neighbors in a nontraditional setting, and to support emerging artists. But the program has hit an unexpected nerve with its audience.

“The hybrid of comedy and theatre is new to the venue and yet people keep coming back to see that,” said Center Theatre Group Community Partnerships Director Jesus Reyes. “There is a communal and cultural need for laughter, for theatre that tells bitingly honest stories, whether they are taken from our own lives or ripped from the headlines.” The value of the stories told at Chisme y Queso caused Reyes and Community Partnerships Associate—and Chisme y Queso director— Alejandra Cisneros, to invest more time in the development of the skits performed onstage. As a result, local playwrights will now work in a writers room with Center Theatre Group Resident Artist Naomi Iizuka and Literary Manager Joy Meads. This will increase the development time of each skit and the attention paid to each writer. “The writers room allows the playwrights to work more closely with each other and with the actors during the creative process. It’s been an amazing experience for all of us to see how vivid and alive the writing can be,” said Iizuka. Supporting the dramaturgical and play development components of the program has become a priority for Reyes, Cisneros, Iizuka, and Meads.

“We didn’t realize we were essentially creating a playwriting incubator,” said Reyes. “We are investing in playwrights at the inception of their careers. This investment ties into Center Theatre Group’s mission of cultivating new artists, and L.A. specific artistic voices. It means that even though this program is location specific, the impact will reach throughout our company and the city.”

The relationship between community and artists is what makes Chisme a totally unique theatrical experience. The event begins with Community Liaison and emcee Alexis de la Rocha inviting the audience to write down their own chisme on coasters. Throughout the evening, chisme is chosen out of a jar, and the actors must transform the stories into performance, using the few props they have on hand. The writers’ short skits are interspersed among the improvised chisme. It’s a whirlwind performance as the actors shift in and out of a myriad of characters, from jilted girlfriends to arthritic old men. At the end of the evening, the writer of the best chisme is awarded tickets to a Center Theatre Group show and a large block of queso fresco—fresh Mexican cheese. If there’s an overarching message we hope audiences take away, it’s that “storytelling isn’t just what’s on a stage,” said Cisneros.“When you tell stories of your day, when you tell stories of your week, that is performance.” This project was made possible by a Building Demand for the Arts Implementation grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

This is exactly why the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is supporting the program. “Our Building Demand for the Arts grants fund the placement of artists at the center of institutional efforts to build meaningful, long-lasting relationships with communities,” said Program Director for the Arts Maurine Knighton. “At their best, these projects help artists and communities co-create cultural programs that reflect authentic relationships and mutual concern. Chisme y Queso does just that, weaving together playwriting, performance, and music into a rich tapestry that reflects the interests of local residents.”

As part of the evaluation process of Chisme y Queso, we asked attending community members to answer the question, “Why do you go to theatre?” on the back of a coaster. Here is a selection of some of our favorite answers. The next season of Chisme y Queso will take place on the following dates: Sep 10 and 24, Oct 8 and 22, Nov 5, and a final date to be confirmed. 18 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

Welcome to Welcome to the Ahmanson Theatre for the American premiere of Sir Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes, a co-presentation of Center Theatre Group and Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center. Our two organizations are thrilled to bring this double Olivier Award-winning adaptation of the legendary Powell and Pressburger film to Los Angeles. From Rachel Moore, President and CEO of The Music Center As a former professional ballet dancer, The Red Shoes is close to my heart and one of the few ballet films I saw as an aspiring performer. While dance is a universal language that transcends time and place, in many ways, the film is a time capsule of the genre in the first quarter of the 20 century—from ballet technique to the choices professional female dancers had to make between the life of an artist or that of a wife and mother. Since that time, dance has evolved, including the creation of neoclassical and contemporary ballet. While women still struggle for equitable opportunities, particularly with far too few female choreographers, many are able to balance their artistic dreams with family commitments. The same applies to the incredibly talented Sir Matthew Bourne, whose productions have continued to evolve, keeping pace with changing technique and the increasing power and athleticism of dance, now radically different in the 21 century. That’s why it is important for The Music Center and Center Theatre Group to present this production and why The Red Shoes audiences will have an unforgettable experience. We’re thrilled that this engagement launches our 15 season of Dance at The Music Center. TH

From Michael Ritchie, Artistic Director of Center Theatre Group For more than 50 years, Center Theatre Group has been working with the world’s greatest artists to present unforgettable experiences for our audiences, and Sir Matthew Bourne is a perfect example of that tradition. Matthew is a valued member of Center Theatre Group’s family, having joined us 20 years ago with the American premiere of Swan Lake at the Ahmanson. Recently he began his five year tenure as one of our esteemed Associate Artists. It’s our way of formalizing an already close connection. It also ensures that we will continue to bring his exciting work to you, our audiences, as we set the foundation for the next 50 years. I’ve had the great fortune of seeing all of Matthew’s works over the years and can honestly say that The Red Shoes is his finest yet. I hope all of you will equally enjoy this beautiful adaptation of such a classic film.

HOW THE RED SHOES CAME TO LIFE: AN INTERVIEW WITH SIR MATTHEW BOURNE

Ashley Shaw as Victoria Page. Photo by Johan Persson.

What is it about The Red Shoes that attracts you as a story to adapt for dance? It’s the story that Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger fashioned around Hans Christian Andersen’s story of The Red Shoes for their seminal 1948 movie that really attracted me. The Andersen fairy tale is a little difficult to relate to today with its themes of the “sin” of vanity and religious redemption. However, the image of the red shoes that once put on will not allow the wearer to stop dancing, has long been a potent one for creative minds from Powell and Pressburger to Kate Bush to Emma Rice and her memorable theatre production for Kneehigh.

the lure of the highest artistic achievement as represented by Boris Lermontov, the dance company’s legendary impresario, who believes that you cannot be a great artist if distracted by human love. Lermontov sees art (or more specifically ballet) as something close to a religion. This is both his strength and his tragedy. Even Vicky and Julian would not have found their love if it were not for their shared artistic success. It is only the thrill of creation that brings them together, after a fairly rocky start. However, when they are starved of their creative lives their relationship becomes “messy” and they find themselves missing something.

I have loved the film since I was a teenager with its depiction of a group of people all passionate about creating something magical and beautiful. It seemed to be saying that art was something worth fighting for, even dying for, if the rather melodramatic conclusion is to be believed. It was a world full of glamour, romance, and creativity populated by larger than life personalities. In short, it was a world that I wanted to be part of!

I’m also exploring how the fairy-tale world of ballet and the stories it tells can actually blend into the real-life tale of love, ambition, artistic and personal fulfilment, until the two are barely distinguishable.

The film’s genius, though, was to take that highly theatrical world and turn it into a highly cinematic, and at times, surreal piece of filmmaking. My challenge has been to capture some of that surreal, sensuous quality within the more natural theatre setting. What are the main themes of the story? The main message of The Red Shoes is that nothing matters but art. As Michael Powell said, “The Red Shoes told us to go and die for art.” Whilst acknowledging the exaggeration here, I believe it was a piece that asked us to take art seriously as a life-changing force: something that gives intense joy but also asks for and requires sacrifices. It is the love story of two young artists—one, a dancer, Victoria Page; and one, a composer, Julian Craster—and the fight between that love and

How does it speak to the audience of today? In today’s culture there seems an obsession with what it takes to become a great performer or artist. The two most popular shows on television [in the U.K.] are about finding someone with star quality (The X Factor) or watching someone aquire the skills and dedication to become a great dancer (Strictly Come Dancing). Katharine Hepburn was once asked what “star-quality” was and she replied, “I don’t know, but I’ve got it.” It’s an indefinable thing but we seem fascinated by it. The Red Shoes gives us a glimpse into that world, an insight into the art form of dance, a revealing backstage story into the minds of artists and the creative life. However, the heart of the story is a tragic, real-life, triangular love story like no other. Two men in love with the same woman but in very different ways, and all tied up with their combined artistic achievement. When Julian, the composer, accuses Lermontov of being jealous of his relationship with Victoria Page he answers “Yes, I am, but in a way you would never understand.”

What are the differences between a dance company in 1948 and today? The Red Shoes is a story about dance and dancers, something that we in New Adventures know a thing or two about! However, a dance company in 1948 was very different from dance company life today. When The Red Shoes was released in 1948, ballet was a relatively new and mysterious art form and the film was a genuine insight into a rare and extraordinary world of flamboyant personalities, glamorous women, fey men, and obsessive, uptight creative figures with strange names and a range of international accents. Most, if not all of this has changed, of course, but I did see a similarity between the life of a hard-working touring company, full of slightly eccentric personalities, and the world of New Adventures today. I don’t think a contemporary ballet company today would necessarily create the right atmosphere to re-create the company we see in the 1948 film. The family atmosphere of New Adventures with its group of talented, highly individual performers who tour around the U.K. and the world as a tight-knit community, seemed the right company to portray the fictional Lermontov company of yesteryear. The performances and personalities in the famous film are legendary. How have the New Adventures dancers approached playing these characters? Who can imagine The Red Shoes without Moira Shearer, Robert Helpmann, Leonide Massine, and perhaps most of all, Anton Walbrook? This is something that we have all had to contemplate and boldly address. I think the New Adventures dancers, whether they knew the film before or not, have all fallen in love with these unique performers. Our task has been, I think, to honor them with the odd little tribute but then to create our own characters as dictated by the story we are telling. Trying to recreate special performers or performances is always a mistake and I’ve encouraged the dancers to find their own way. That has not stopped us, however, from delving into countless biographies and YouTube clips to look for inspiration into the flavor of the period in which we are working and to gather anecdotes about dancers and dancing in the 1940s and ’50s. All our ensemble dancers were given a famous dancer of this era to study and the clues are in their given names in the program! You have chosen the music of celebrated Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann rather than the original Oscar-winning score from the film. Why? I have a great affection for Brian Easdale’s very fine score for The Red Shoes ballet in the film. It’s an impressive achievement by any standards and a first for a mainstream film to include an unheard of 15-minute ballet as its central storytelling device.

A feature film that includes a featured ballet is very different from a full-length wordless dance piece in which the music not only has to serve the ballets that the company perform but also the backstage life of the company and most importantly, the emotional story of Vicky Page, Julian Craster, and Boris Lermontov. I found this variety of ideas in the work of one of my favorite Hollywood composers, Bernard Herrmann. Herrmann is probably most famous for his work with Alfred Hitchcock but Terry Davies (who is brilliantly arranging the music) and I decided to concentrate on the pre-Hitchcock music and have uncovered some real gems. Various concert pieces and suites from his earlier films have proved very rich sources of material. Who knew that Citizen Kane was full of dance music? And has there ever been a more bittersweet and moving film score than that for The Ghost and Mrs. Muir? These both feature heavily, as does the one post Red Shoes era piece. The score for the 1966 movie Fahrenheit 451 is both magical and unsettling and the perfect sound world for The Red Shoes ballet. It also gives us the sense that the Ballet Lermontov are creating something new and slightly futuristic. I’m very proud to be presenting much of this music in the theatre for the first time. There is so much to enjoy musically here. I think it will be one of the revelations of this piece. Design always plays such a big part in New Adventures productions. What have been the challenges on this project? My Associate Designer, Lez Brotherston, has taken on another enormous challenge with this production. Firstly, to create an adaptable theatrical space depicting scenes both onstage and backstage, as well as a range of locations from Covent Garden to Monte Carlo, but also to allow for those flights of fancy that take us out of the literal theatrical world and into the sensuous and surreal world of artistic endeavor. For this, Lez and I also rely heavily on the brilliance of our lighting designer, Paule Constable, who always manages to surprise and thrill me with her own vision of what we are all trying to achieve. Do you relate personally to any of the characters in the story? Perhaps not surprisingly I have found myself agreeing with much of what Lermontov says in the movie. I am nothing like him, of course, and I do acknowledge that some of his views are a little extreme today, but I do understand his particular kind of love for Vicky and his love of his company and dance in general. Nothing else seems as important to him. As I get older, I recognize that sentiment more and more.

Dear Friends, Welcome to the USA premiere performances of New Adventures’ production of The Red Shoes. I’m delighted to be opening this show here in Los Angeles at a theatre very close to my heart. The Ahmanson Theatre very much feels like our home venue in the United States, and the entire team here at Center Theatre Group are valued colleagues. I was delighted to participate in the 50 Anniversary celebrations earlier this year to mark the extraordinary legacy of these venues. It was also an honour to be invited by Michael Ritchie to become an Associate Artist of Center Theatre Group a role that, for me, demonstrates the combined commitment of both our organizations to collaboration and artistic partnership. TH

This show is the culmination of a 20-year ambition to bring Powell and Pressburger’s seminal 1948 film to the stage. It is also, in many ways, my personal love letter to a life in theatre and dance. The Red Shoes led us into 2017 and launched the 30-year celebration of my company in great style. We marked the anniversary with a packed program of touring and projects across the U.K. and around the world. I am delighted that our charity Re:Bourne is delivering dance experiences to high school students across Los Angeles during our season at Center Theatre Group. In 2017 we are proudly touring more dance and delivering more dance experiences, than any other U.K. dance company and are thrilled to be introducing The Red Shoes to our friends in the USA. This is only possible due to the loyalty and support of our audiences across the U.K. and internationally. Whether you’re one of our biggest supporters, or someone new to dance or our company, thank you for being here. Very best wishes,

Sir Matthew Bourne Artistic Director, New Adventures & Re:Bourne

SIR MATTHEW BOURNE (Artistic Director, New Adventures & Re:Bourne). Matthew Bourne is widely hailed as the U.K.’s most popular and successful choreographer and director. For close to 30 years he has been creating and directing dance for musicals, opera, theatre, and film as well as his own highly successful, award-winning companies. Matthew is the creator of the world’s longest running ballet production, a seven-time Olivier Award winner, and the only British director to have won the Tony Award for both Best Choreographer and Best Director of a Musical. As Artistic Director of his first company, Adventures in Motion Pictures (1987–2002) Matthew created many awardwinning works. Further hit productions were created when New Adventures was launched in 2002, becoming the U.K.’s busiest and most successful dance company. Matthew’s choreography for musical theatre includes South Pacific (National Theatre) and Cameron

Mackintosh’s productions of Oliver!, My Fair Lady, and Mary Poppins. In 2008 he established his charity Re:Bourne to increase opportunities that inspire young people with a passion for dance. Matthew is a proud Associate Artist of Center Theatre Group. BERNARD HERRMANN (1911–1975) (Music). From his first film, Citizen Kane, to his last, Taxi Driver, Herrmann was a master at evoking psychological nuance and dramatic tension through music, often using unheard-of instrumental combinations to suit the dramatic needs of a film. His movie scores are amongst the most distinguished ever written, ranging from the fantastic The Day the Earth Stood Still, Fahrenheit 451, through the romantic Obsession, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, to the terrifying Psycho. It seems fitting that a composer who blazed new trails across the emerging media of the 20 century—radio, cinema, and television—is finding fresh appreciation in the age of connectivity, as his influence on the art of dramatic music continues to grow into the 21 century. Born in New York City on 29 June, 1911, he studied conducting and composition at the New York University and the Juilliard School, where his teachers included Philip James and Percy Grainger. He became part of Aaron Copland’s Young Composers Group and at the age of 22 made his first major public appearance as a conductor. In 1934 Herrmann was appointed as conductor of the CBS Symphony Orchestra and composed several works for radio drama pioneers such as Norman Corwin and Orson Welles. Welles asked Herrmann to write the music to Citizen Kane in 1940. During the following decade Herrmann managed to align a film career that included his Oscar -winning The Devil and Daniel Webster and the classic The Ghost and Mrs Muir with his New York-based appearances as conductor and composer for CBS. In 1951, after CBS was forced to shut the radio orchestra, Herrmann moved to Hollywood as a freelance composer working in films for artists such as Robert Wise, The Day the Earth Stood Still; Fred Zinnemann, A Hatful of Rain; Ray Harryhausen, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad; and, most importantly, Alfred Hitchcock, with whom he collaborated on classics including North by Northwest, Vertigo, and Psycho. By the 1960s he had relocated to London where he recorded his musical works for major labels, notably Decca, and composed for a new generation of directors including François Truffaut on Fahrenheit 451 and Brian De Palma on Obsession. He died on the morning of Christmas Eve 1975, having just completed recording his score to Martin Scorcese’s Taxi Driver. Herrmann was married three times: TH

to novelist Lucille Fletcher from 1939 to 1948 (two daughters); then to Lucy Anderson from 1949 to 1964; and, finally, to Norma Shepherd—a journalist, producer, and presenter for the BBC in London—in 1968. Steven C. Smith “As a composer I might class myself as a Neo-Romantic, inasmuch as I have always regarded music as a highly personal and emotional form of expression. I like to write music which takes its inspiration from poetry, art and nature. I do not care for purely decorative music. Although I am in sympathy with modern idioms, I abhor music which attempts nothing more than the illustration of a stylistic fad. And in using modern techniques, I have tried at all times to subjugate them to a larger idea or a grander human feeling.” —Bernard Herrmann MICHAEL POWELL AND EMERIC PRESSBURGER The filmmaking partnership of the British Michael Powell (1905–1990) and Hungarian Emeric Pressburger (1902–1988) produced many classics of British cinema such as The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life and Death, Black Narcissus, I Know Where I’m Going!, and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. Their imagination and visual extravagance stands out against the realist tendencies of the time, and many filmmakers, such as Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and George A. Romero, have cited them as a major influence. The pair met in 1939 at Alexander Korda’s London Films. Powell’s poignant film The Edge of the World had brought him to the attention of the mogul and Pressburger was working as a screenwriter, having fled the Nazis in Germany. In 1943 they established their own company, The Archers, and routinely shared a ‘written, produced and directed by’ credit. Their partnership officially ended in 1957, although they would later reunite for a couple of films. In 1981 Powell and Pressburger were recognized for their contributions to British cinema with the BAFTA Academy Fellowship Award, the most prestigious award given by the British Academy of Film and Television Art. DUNCAN MCLEAN’s (Projection Design) theatre work includes Labour Of Love (Michael Grandage); Love In Idleness (Menier, West End); Privacy (Public Theater, New York); The Tempest (St. Ann’s Warehouse, New York); Another World (National Theatre); Hangmen (Royal Court/Wyndham’s); The Bodyguard (Adelphi Theatre/U.K. tour/worldwide); Committee, Saint Joan, The Shakespeare Trilogy, One

TERRY DAVIES (Orchestrations) is an Associate Artist of New Adventures and has composed the music for The Car Man, Play Without Words, Edward Scissorhands, Dorian Gray, and Lord of the Flies. Along with Matthew, he won an Olivier Award for Play Without Words. Terry has also composed many scores for the National Theatre, RSC, West End, and many other theatres. As well as his compositions, he has conducted the music for about 70 feature films and a similar number of TV programs. The films include Florence Foster Jenkins, Youth (Best Song nomination, Academy Awards 2016), Mr. Turner (nominated Best Original Score, Academy Awards 2015), The King’s Speech (Best Motion Picture, Academy Awards), The Illusionist (nominated Best Animated Feature Film, Academy Awards), Brideshead Revisited, Kinky Boots, and Shakespeare in Love (Best Motion Picture, Best Music, etc, Academy Awards 1999). He conducted Renée Fleming in Verdi and Bellini for A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Mira Nair’s film of Vanity Fair featured Terry’s dance music.
