LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP

After a long stretch of uncertain times, 2022 was a year of tremendous energy and excitement at The Center. We were able to once again gather consistently to experience and celebrate the arts, filling the theater lobby with patrons eagerly anticipating performances and visiting with friends. The many wonderful and thought-provoking exhibits in the common areas stirred our emotions. We are grateful to serve as a hub for the arts in Jackson.

MACK MENDENHALL SECRETARY

Overall, the number of events this year exceeded pre-pandemic levels. We focused on expanding our offerings, activating collaborative partnerships, and experimented with new patron experiences - including new seating configurations in The Center Theater and a wide variety of outdoor events in The Center Park. No matter your passions, interests, or age, there is something for everyone at The Center.

Of course, the work we do is only possible because of you - our dedicated community of donors, patrons, sponsors, and grantors. We are humbled by the confidence you extend to us through your support of The Center, and we thank you for supporting the arts in Jackson.

As we embark on another year, collaboration remains at the heart of all that we do. We will continue to expand the diversity of our programming, reflective of an ever-evolving community. We are focused on needed capital improvements for our nearly 20-year-old facility and establishing long-term financial sustainability. We have some hearty challenges as well as transformational opportunities ahead of us. We’ll share all of this with you throughout the year, and we look forward to seeing you on our campus soon!

Campus Exhibitions add visual vibrancy by supporting and showcasing a diverse group of visual artists through art exhibitions, youth art displays, artist talks, workshops, and more.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING

The Center supports community events of all shapes and sizes, utilizing our expertise in events and offering discounted services for any community nonprofit that holds events at The Center.

A DONOR STORY

SHELBY READ PARTNER AND SENIOR STRATEGIST ROCKY MOUNTAIN CONSULTING

Center for the Arts has been a cornerstone of my life in Jackson. As a community member, I’ve attended art openings, musical, dance, and theatrical performances, lectures, trainings, and expanded my horizons by taking classes at Central Wyoming College. Having access to art, music, and other types of creative and independent expression is critical to my ability to live in the rural west.

The Center is a part of my story here in Jackson. My daughter’s first outing—ever— during a lull in the pandemic, involved standing on the stage with other Community Foundation staff to announce the Old Bill’s total in 2021. On another occasion, she and I dug through crates looking for records at the KHOL record sale. The facility is top-notch, but what really takes Center for the Arts to the next level is the staff, programming, Resident Organizations, and community members who are brought together.

SHARING DIVERSITY WITHIN THE ARTS

As a leader in the creative community, The Center is uniquely positioned to highlight diverse artists and their work. The Center hosted regional artist Colleen Friday, who is a member of the Arapaho Nation. Colleen was the first recipient of The Wyoming Art Council’s Native Art Fellowship in 2022. Her work uses customs from her Arapaho culture to convey the unique beauty of Wyoming’s landscape.

FINDERS KEEPERS BY PATRICK DOUGHERTY, A CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY

Over three weeks in August 2022, internationally known artist Patrick Dougherty created a site-specific sculpture called Finders Keepers in The Center Park. The Center and Jackson Hole Public Art led the community-wide effort to support this new public art piece, which will remain in place for the next several years.

This project represents the amazing possibilities available to our community when we come together with a common goal and shared artistic vision.

A VIBRANT COMMUNITY HUB

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

The Center is here because of you. Our community came together over 30 years ago to envision a space that unites the arts and cultural programming in our valley. The Center is the outcome of that collective dream. It’s because of ongoing support that we are here today, hosting and programming events and serving as a gathering space for the entire Jackson Hole community.

LINDSAY WILCOX BOARD MEMBER

“The Center is like Jackson’s other Town Square…it’s where everyone gathers. It’s the art, the theater, the music. It’s the heart and soul of the community.”

NATALIA DUNCAN MACKER PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OFF SQUARE THEATRE COMPANY

“Being a Resident at The Center is crucial to the vitality of Off Square Theatre Company. It has given us the stability to take creative risk, and it has allowed us to have a home to form a family within the local community.”

WHERE WE’RE HEADED

THE CENTER’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAS IDENTIFIED THREE STRATEGIC PILLARS THAT WILL HELP GUIDE THE CENTER’S FUTURE.

EXPAND

Expand awareness, diversity, and inclusion across the organization to make The Center a place for everyone.

SUPPORT

Support and strengthen relationships with Resident Organizations and other community partners to bring greater collaboration and vibrancy to the campus.

BUILD

Build financial and operational stability for The Center in perpetuity.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO BRINGING OUR COMMUNITY TOGETHER FOR MANY YEARS TO COME, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

jhcenterforthearts.org CENTER FOR THE ARTS ANNUAL REPORT 13

WHERE YOUR SUPPORT GOES

Donations to The Center - from individuals, business sponsors, and granting organizations - are used to foster relationships across our community, inspire collaborative artistic endeavors, and improve our vast campus while also keeping its use affordable.

A DYNAMIC COMMUNITY GATHERING SPACE

MAINTENANCE, UPGRADES AND CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGIES

The costs of operating, maintaining, and updating a 78,000 square-foot facility are significant and ever-growing.

RESIDENT ORGANIZATIONS

SUBSIDIZED RESIDENT RENTS

Through the support of donors, The Center is able to defray costs and offer subsidized lease and rental rates, allowing our 21 Resident nonprofits to direct more of their funds to their own important missions.

CENTER PROGRAMMING

WORLD-CLASS ARTISTS

SUBSIDIZED TICKET PRICES

Income from ticket sales alone does not cover all the expenses associated with event production. Center fundraising directly supports our programming, allowing us to bring artists typically seen in much larger communities and venues to our mountain town.

SUBSIDIZED RENTAL RATES

FOR

ALL USERS

With each venue rental, The Center absorbs costs related to event production, technical staff and equipment, and other support services. This contribution to the community allows all events held on our campus to be presented at the highest possible caliber.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING

In 2022, spending outpaced income, primarily due to increased facilities maintenance expenses. Specifically, the costs of capital repairs and infrastructure improvements for our aging facility were higher than anticipated. As we look ahead, we are committed to maintaining our physical campus, our most valuable resource. We are putting systems in place to better anticipate and raise the necessary funds for these projects in the future.
