2023
CENTER FOR THE ARTS ANNUAL REPORT

FROM THE CENTER

In the past year, The Center offered a wide range of programming reflective of the varied interests found throughout our community. We featured cultural programs, spoken word, family programming, and of course, fantastic musical performances. Headliners included top-tier artists like Jason Isbell and Natasha Bedingfield. A National Poet Laureate graced our stage. The Center also hosted local and regional artists and hosted programs from dozens of Jackson’s nonprofit organizations - all while keeping affordability and accessibility to the arts at the forefront.

Collaboration is at the heart of all that we do. The Brainstorm Speaker Series launched in partnership with Teton County Library and the Jackson Hole News&Guide. This lecture series brings intellectually engaging and thought-provoking speakers to our community on a variety of topics. With capacity crowds for each presentation, we are thrilled with the success of this partnership. It is one we’re sure to continue building upon in the years ahead.

The Center is home to 20 Resident Organizations - arts, culture, and education nonprofits that bring activity to campus every day. To support and elevate their work, we opened The Center Commons, a fresh, flexible, and dedicated space to work, create, and connect. Seeing the space filled with inspired conversation and activity has been wonderful!

We are undertaking significant capital improvements as The Center approaches 20 years of well-loved use. Two large roof sections were replaced in 2023 as part of a multi-year endeavor. With other improvements to theater technology, infrastructure, and campus planned, The Center has made important decisions about long-term financial strategy. We are taking steps that will position us to enhance the facility and continue raising the bar for creative endeavors in the valley.

As always, our work is made possible thanks to the generous support of our donors, sponsors, foundations, and partners. Your underwriting keeps The Center’s rental rates affordable, our facilities state-of-the-art, and ticket prices within reach for our community members. Our work is only possible because of you. We thank you for your support.

CENTER FOR THE ARTS 2023 ANNUAL REPORT jhcenterforthearts.org 6 CREATIVE CAMPUS
“” Community is the superpower of Teton County, and The Center is the heartbeat that keeps the community alive and well.

“Almost every time we drive into town for an event at The Center, we recognize how incredibly fortunate we are in our mountain town to see the most amazing live music, dance and theater entertainment, and art installations. We have learned and laughed, received inspiration and awe, cheered and supported friends, and we could not be more grateful for the continuous opportunities given to us and the other nonprofits dear to us who host events at The Center.

Our special community is extraordinarily generous with their philanthropy, and we’re fortunate to have a building of The Center’s scale and its exceptional staff. Community is the superpower of Teton County, and The Center is the heartbeat that keeps the community alive and well.”

2023 ANNUAL BENEFIT CONCERT

The Center’s Annual Benefit Concert is a festive outdoor event celebrating our community, the arts, and The Center’s role where it all comes together. We’ve built a reputation for bringing tremendous talent that draws enthusiastic crowdsincluding the 2023 Benefit Concert featuring Cory Wong.

The Center Benefit represents approximately 25% of our annual fundraising budget. Revenue generated from the event is used to maintain and improve our facility, subsidize lease and rental rates for nonprofits, and support Center events throughout the year.

Over 1000 tickets were issued - setting a new Center record

CENTER RESIDENT ORGANIZATIONS

The Center is home to 20 Resident Organizations—independent arts and education organizations that represent a significant portion of the cultural nonprofits in Jackson Hole. The Center’s Resident Partners activate our campus and bring vibrancy to our community.

Resident Organizations utilize The Center in a multitude of ways, ranging from occupying office space for their administrative needs to renting studio and classroom spaces to bring their programs to life. The Center’s visionary founders designed many areas of campus specifically for Resident Organizations and their dedicated programming. The paint and ceramic studios for the Art Association of Jackson Hole, the multiple dance classrooms for Dancers’ Workshop, and the Black Box Theater utilized by Off Square Theatre Company were purpose-built for these organizations.

COMMUNITY COLLABORATION

The Brainstorm Speaker Series was a community collaboration of Teton County Library*, Jackson Hole News&Guide, and The Center. This spoken word initiative brought intellectually engaging and thought-provoking speakers to The Center stage with the goal of igniting conversation and curiosity.

The inaugural series consisted of four speakers, two of whom appeared in 2023. Wildly successful, each show quickly sold out for these free programs. We look forward to building on the momentum of this tremendous launch to bring more high-quality programming of this type to the community.

THE CENTER CAMPUS

The Center is synonymous with our dynamic campus itself, and we are so proud of all that we have to offer, both indoors and outdoors. Occupying 78,000 square feet, we provide performance space in the 525-seat Center Theater, our black box theater, the outdoor amphitheater, and the adjacent Center Park at heavily discounted rates for Resident Organizations and other regional nonprofits.

Our Resident Organizations also lease dance studios, music performance and practice rooms, art studios, education spaces, as well as office spaces at The Center. Our goal is to provide affordable access to excellent facilities for our arts community.

Rental rates for the theater and lobby have been reduced to the same level they were when the space opened in 2007

$16 per square foot rental cost for Center Residents versus $47 average in Jackson Hole

During the past year, we invested over $1 million in maintaining and upgrading our campus

LONG-TERM CAPITAL INVESTMENTS

In 2023, two large sections of the roof were replaced as part of a multi-year endeavor to repair and enhance our roof system, which is subject to extreme mountain weather. With so many sections to our dynamic building, we are tackling the project in phases. These repairs and improvements ensure that our campus can continue to serve as a hub for arts and culture for many years to come.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

For nearly 20 years, Center for the Arts has fostered artistic and cultural expression in its many forms, serving as an essential gathering place for our community. We have forged our own path to success and now find ourselves at an organizational crossroads of need and opportunity. To propel this creative ecosystem into the next chapter, we must expand our resources, preserve our most vital assets, and elevate our sights toward achieving even greater impact.

The following priorities provide a roadmap to achieving these goals and continuing to deliver on our mission for many years to come.

Maintain and enhance our facility

Support and elevate the work of our Resident Partners

Promote programmatic excellence, diversity, and impact

Build financial and operational sustainability
