TheCityofPasco,WA,embarkedonanambitiousprojecttomodernizeandexpanditsProcessWater ReuseFacility,demonstratinganinnovativeapproachtoindustrialsymbiosisThisinitiativeaimedto tacklechallengesposedbyaginginfrastructure,systeminefficiencies,andtheincreasingdemandsof thefoodprocessingindustry.Withatotalinvestmentof$137million,theprojectsetouttotreat2 billiongallonsperyearofindustrialwastewaterfromsevenmajorfoodprocessors,transforming wasteintovaluableresourceswhilesupportingeconomicgrowthandsustainability.
STARTANDEXPANSION
In2023,Pascoinitiatedasignificantmodernizationandexpansionofitswastewatertreatment facilityTheprojectwasdesignedtoaddressthefacility'sincapacitytohandleprojectedincreasesin nitrogenloadsresultingfromthegrowthofthefoodprocessingindustry.Recognizingthelimitations oftraditionalsolutions,PascoPublicWorksinnovatedasymbioticnetworkofsolutionstoextract valuefromwaste,reducefossilfuelreliance,andfacilitatethecreationofhundredsofjobs.

Thisprojectemergedfromanefforttoutilizedecayingseaweedthatwasheduponlocalbeaches,andwas creatinganuisanceodorforresidentsandtourists.Thesolutionidentifiedbystakeholderswastogenerate biogasusingtheseaweedasfeedstock Thesuccessfulexperimentpromptedfurtherconsiderationofother existingresources TodaySolrødBiogas,ownedinpartbythemunicipalityofSolrød,utilizesthefollowingas wasteinputtosymbioticallygenerateheat,power,andfertilizer:1,500tonsofseaweedfromthebeach,90,000 tonnesoforganicresidualproductfromCPKelco,70,000tonsoforganicresiduefromChr.Hansen,44,500 tonsofanimalmanureand20,000tonnesofotherindustrialwasteproducts
HOWMUCHENERGY?
Thebiomassismadeupbybiologicalresidualproducts,seaweedandalgalsludgeremovedfrombeaches aswellaslivestockmanurefromadjacentfarms.Thebiomassisusedprimarilyfortheproductionofheat andelectricitytoreplacefossilfuelinputs,including18millionm3ofbiogas,whichisapproximately equivalentto11millionm3ofmethane.Thiscanprovideheatforaround4,000householdsandgenerate electricityforapproximately5,400households Additionally,thereisasupplyof220,000tonnesof biofertilizerforagriculturaluse Thebiofertilizerisofhighquality,richinorganicmatter,essential nutrients,andbeneficialmicrobialactivity,makingitsuitableforpromotingsoilfertilityandsupporting plantgrowth.
WASTETOENERGY
Themainconstituentsofrawbiogasisabouttwo-thirdsmethaneandonethirdcarbondioxide.Theycan beutiliseddirectlyasfuelin,forinstance,agasgeneratortogenerateelectricity.Gasgeneratorsneed cooling,aprocessthatproducesheatedcoolingwater.Aheatexchangertransferstheheatofthecooling watertowater,whichcanbeusedasdistrictheatingtohouseholdsandofficesorforindustrial production
CARBONREDUCTION
TheproductionofheatbasedonbiogasfromSolrødBiogascorrespondstoapprox.41%of theheatconsumptioninthemunicipalityorapprox.4,000households'heat consumptionByreplacingfossilfuelswithbiogas,theSolrødBiogasfacilitysignificantly reducescarbonemissions ThefacilityhelpssavethousandsoftonsofCO2annually, contributingtoDenmark'sambitiousclimategoals. LEACHINGREDUCTION
Theyreducetheleachingofnutrientslikenitrogenfrommanureandfertilizerinto theaquaticenvironment,preventingnutrientaccumulationinwaterbodiesBy preventingexcessivenutrientinflux,thisapproachcurbsalgaegrowththatcan depleteoxygenlevelsinwater,potentiallyleadingtodeadzonesbothinthewater columnandatthebottom.
