SECTION 1 EVENT INFORMATION
SECTION 1 | ABBOTT HEALTH & FITNESS EXPO VOLUNTEERS
The three-day Abbott Health & Fitness Expo will be held in advance of the event for race participants. Volunteers supporting this area should be aware of the following.
What are the responsibilities of an Abbott Health & Fitness Expo volunteer?
• Info Team Booth & Greeters: Meet people from around the world! Volunteers will act as a resource for participants from over 100 different countries and will greet and direct them as they arrive. Familiarity with the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Abbott Health & Fitness Expo and local transportation options is preferred, and a guidebook will be provided for reference. Volunteers with foreign language skills are encouraged.
• Solutions: Volunteers will support the Packet Pick-up process at the Abbott Health & Fitness Expo by confirming participant registrations, looking up individuals, verifying information and providing basic event information. Individuals who have good customer service skills and are comfortable with using a computer are encouraged to volunteer for this role.
• ID & Ticket Check: Volunteers will verify participant IDs, scan the QR code on the participant’s mobile devices or confirmation tickets and direct them to the appropriate Packet Pick-up counter.
• Expo General Participant Support: Volunteers will support participants in various areas at the Abbott Health & Fitness Expo including the Photo Activation Stations, Oversize Baggage Storage, distributing Parking Validation and other areas as assigned. Exact assignment and training will be provided upon check-in.
• 5K Packet Distribution: Volunteers will welcome Abbott Chicago 5K participants to the Abbott Health & Fitness Expo at McCormick Place, verify their bib tag and confirm their participant information before releasing their packet to them.
• Bag & T-shirt Distribution: Volunteers will welcome participants and distribute participant bags and t-shirts. Individuals with strong customer service skills are encouraged to volunteer for this role.
• Packet Distribution: Volunteers will welcome participants, verify their bib tag and confirm their participant information (displayed on an iPad) before releasing their packet to them. Individuals who are organized and have good customer service skills are encouraged to volunteer for this role.
When is my shift?
The Abbott Health & Fitness Expo is Thursday, October 9 through Saturday, October 11. Please refer to your race week confirmation email for your specific shift details.
Where do I check in for my shift?
The Abbott Health & Fitness Expo is located at McCormick Place, Lakeside Center, Hall D (2301 S. Martin Luther King Dr., Chicago, IL, 60616). Please arrive at your scheduled shift start time and report to Volunteer Check-in.
How do I get there?
Public transportation: We encourage volunteers to take public transportation for a greener Chicago:
• CTA – The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) offers an economical and convenient way to get to and from the Health & Fitness Expo. For information on CTA fares and transit directions to and from the event, visit transitchicago.com.
• South Shore Line – Participants and spectators are encouraged to take the South Shore Line to the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. The South Shore Line runs from South Bend, Indiana to Chicago with stops along the way. For more information about stations and tickets, visit mysouthshoreline.com or call 219.926.5744.
• Metra Train – Participants and spectators are encouraged to take advantage of Metra’s $7 Saturday or Sunday Day Pass, good for unlimited rides on either Saturday or Sunday. In addition, the $10 Weekend Pass (available on the Ventra App only) is good for unlimited rides on both weekend days. Abbott Health & Fitness Expo attendees are encouraged to take the Metra Electric line to and from the Health & Fitness Expo. Metra Electric provides frequent service between McCormick Place and downtown.
Divvy: Gear up for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon with Divvy Bikes! Make your commute easy with Divvy Bikes: Chicago’s bike and scooter share system. Event attendees can conveniently rent a bike or scooter from various docking stations around Chicago.
Parking: Parking will be available for Expo volunteers at McCormick Place Parking Lot C located on Fort Dearborn Drive for a reduced rate of $13. You must have your parking ticket validated at the Health & Fitness Expo in order to receive the reduced rate. Please note, parking is available throughout the McCormick Place campus for $27. Parking Lot C is the only parking lot with a reduced $13 parking rate.
What should I wear?
All volunteers will receive a complimentary long sleeve t-shirt when they arrive to check-in. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes.
Is food provided?
Snacks and water are provided to all volunteers. Additionally, volunteers who sign up for multiple shifts may receive a meal depending on the duration of their shift(s). Please note that while we try to provide a range of food items, we cannot guarantee that snacks will accommodate all dietary restrictions.
Will a supervisor be present to provide instructions and support me, as needed, during my volunteer shift?
Yes. All volunteers will be introduced to their supervisor upon arrival. Your supervisor will provide training specific to your role, and they will be available throughout your shift to support you as needed. If you have any issues with your supervisor or need additional support, please report back to Volunteer Check-in for further assistance.

SECTION 2: ABBOTT CHICAGO 5K
The Abbott Chicago 5K is the perfect way for marathoners, fans of the sport and friends and family to experience Chicago and take part in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon weekend. Volunteers supporting this area should be aware of the following.
What are the responsibilities of an Abbott Chicago 5K volunteer?
Responsibilities include:
• Aid Station: Volunteers will distribute water to race participants and assist with the setup and cleanup of the Aid Station.
• Bike Marshals: Bike marshals ensure that the course is clear of spectators in advance of the professional wheelchair athletes and runners.
• Course Marshals: Course marshals ensure participant and spectator safety by making sure the course stays clear of spectator and vehicle traffic.
• Finish Area Volunteers: Volunteers may assist with any of the following tasks: volunteer check-in, finish line runner refreshment, finisher merchandise or finish line zero waste station.
• People Movers: Volunteers will help control traffic flow throughout the finish line area. They will be spread out throughout the area and continually encourage participants to keep moving.
• Start Area Volunteers: Volunteers may assist with any of the following tasks: volunteer check-in, start corrals or start area zero waste station.
When is my shift?

Where do I check in for my shift?
• Aid Station volunteers and Course Marshals will check in at the Aid Station, located at 110 N. Wacker Drive.
• Bike Marshals check-in location will be communicated directly to volunteers by the Bike Marshal Captain.
• Finish Area volunteers and People Movers will check in at the Abbott Chicago 5K Finish Line located at the corner for Jackson Boulevard. and South Wacker Drive.
• Start area volunteers will check in at the Race office in Grant Park. The Race Office is located on the north side of Balbo Drive between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive. Click here to view a map.

SECTION 3: GRANT PARK VOLUNTEERS
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon will take place in Grant Park on Sunday, October 12.
Volunteers working in Grant Park should be aware of the following general volunteer information and area-specific information. Continue reading after the FAQ for more information on Start, Finish, Harrison Volunteer Compound, Hospitality, IT, Sustainability (Green Team and Start Hydration), Participant Services (Gear Check and Info Team) and Race Day Festival volunteer roles.
When is my shift?
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 12. Please refer to your race week confirmation email for your specific shift details.
Where do I check in for my shift?
Your volunteer role will be in Grant Park. All Grant Park volunteers will check in at the Harrison Volunteer Compound. The Harrison Volunteer Compound is located in Grant Park just east of the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Harrison Street. Volunteers must enter via the Harrison Street Bridge from Michigan Avenue. You will be required to show your race week confirmation email (printed or on your phone) to access the Volunteer Compound. • Public transportation: The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) offers an economical and convenient way to get around Chicago. For information on CTA fares and transit directions to and from the event visit transitchicago.com.
• Bike to Grant Park: World Bicycle Relief will provide a free bike valet for participants and volunteers at the southeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Van Buren Street. Bikes may be stored starting at 4 a.m. and must be picked up by 4 p.m. Individuals are encouraged to bring a bike lock in the event the Bike Valet has reached capacity. Public bike racks are located around the perimeter of Grant Park. Please note that we do not allow bike storage within Harrison Volunteer Compound. Divvy stations are located at Michigan Avenue and Jackson Boulevard, as well as Michigan Avenue and Ida B. Wells Drive for your convenience.
• Race day parking: Millennium Garages offers affordable parking options for Bank of America Chicago Marathon attendees at all four convenient underground garages situated beneath Grant Park, Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park. Purchase parking for race weekend in advance online for a discounted rate. Parking passes are valid at all four garages: Millennium Lakeside, Millennium Park, Grant Park South and Grant Park North. Please note that road closures will be in effect on race day. We encourage volunteers to plan ahead for the road closures.
What should I wear?
You will receive a complimentary jacket, hat and credential when you check in. In addition to the items you will receive, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes during your shift. We also encourage you to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. The event will go on rain or shine!
Is food provided?
Snacks, water, coffee and lunch are provided to all volunteers in the Harrison Volunteer Compound. Please enjoy offerings after you check in or come back for a break throughout your shift! Please note that while we try to provide a range of food items, we cannot guarantee that snacks will accommodate all dietary restrictions.
Will a supervisor be present to provide instructions and support me, as needed, during my volunteer shift?
Yes. All volunteers will be introduced to their supervisor upon arrival. Your supervisor will provide training specific to your role, and they will be available throughout your shift to support you as needed. START VOLUNTEERS
The role of start corral volunteers is to regulate access into the start corrals and to control the forward progress of participants through the start corrals. Each volunteer is assigned to a specific corral. Within each corral, volunteers will be assigned by their corral supervisors to one of three positions.
• Sign holder: Hold tall corral signs to make each corral easily identifiable to participants.
• Gatekeeper: Stand at the corral entrance and verify that each participant entering has a valid bib number (i.e. the participant bib matches the corral).
• Rope holder: Form a line stretching from curb to curb on the roadway. Hold the yellow rope to create a barrier between corrals. At the direction of your corral supervisor, slowly move forward as the race starts.
Once all participants have crossed the start line, each start corral volunteer will have a post-start role to complete before the end of their shift. Specific tasks will be assigned to each corral. This role could include any of the following tasks: assist with the start of a later corral, assist event staff with start line teardown, help to roll up banners and fencing or pick up discarded clothing items left at the start line. These items will be donated as part of the event’s sustainability initiative.
FINISH VOLUNTEERS
Finish volunteers will fill the following roles.
• Finish Line Beer Distribution: Volunteers will be in the beer distribution area located after the finish line, where they will distribute beer to participants ages 21 and over and will help keep the area clean and organized.
• Finish Line Food: Volunteers will be in the food distribution area after the finish line, where they will be responsible for setting up tables, unpacking food items that will be distributed to participants and helping to keep the area clean and organized. At the end of the afternoon, volunteers will assist with removing light, ground-based finish line branding, rolling snow fence and re-packing remaining food for donation to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
• Finish Line Gatorade Endurance: Volunteers will work in the Gatorade distribution area after the finish line. Responsibilities include mixing, pouring and distributing Gatorade to thirsty participants and helping to keep the area clean and organized. At the end of the afternoon, volunteers will assist with removing light, groundbased finish line branding, rolling snow fence and re-packing remaining fluids and supplies.
• Finish Line Heatsheets: Volunteers will work in the heatsheet distribution area just after the finish line. Responsibilities include unrolling and preparing heatsheets, distributing them to participants and helping to keep the area clean and organized. This job is especially important on cooler race days. At the end of the afternoon, volunteers will assist with removing light, ground-based finish line branding, rolling snow fence and re-packing remaining heatsheet supplies. Light physical labor is involved in this role.
• Finish Line Iced Towels & Ice Bags: Volunteers will be responsible for making (provided) and distributing iced towels and ice bags to participants after they cross the finish line. Note: this job is weather dependent. It is possible that you could be reassigned to a different role in the finish line area if cooler race temperatures do not require iced towels.
• Finish Line Medals: Volunteers have the opportunity to officially award Bank of America Chicago Marathon and Chicago Distance Series finishers! Volunteers will distribute medals to participants as they cross the finish line.
• Finish Line Muscle Milk: Volunteers will distribute a Muscle Milk bottle to participants after they cross the finish line and help to keep the finish line area clean and organized.
• Finish Line Water: Volunteers will work in the water distribution area after the finish line. Responsibilities include setting up water tables, distributing bottled water to participants and helping to keep the area clean and organized. At the end of the afternoon, volunteers will assist with removing light, ground-based finish line branding, rolling snow fence and re-packing remaining bottled water and finish line supplies. Light physical labor is involved in this role.
• Runner Refresh Exit Volunteers: Volunteers will help control traffic flow throughout the finish line area. They will be spread out throughout the area and continually encourage runners to keep moving.
• Runner Refresh People Movers: Volunteers will help control traffic flow throughout the red zone located in the finish line area. They will be spread out near the red zone and continually encourage runners to keep moving.
• Red Zone People Movers: Volunteers will help control traffic flow throughout the red zone located in the finish line area. They will be spread out near the red zone and continually encourage runners to keep moving.
• Final Finisher Area: Volunteers will congratulate runners as they finish and direct them to a special finish area. Volunteers will hand the runners their medals, heatsheets (weather dependent) and bottled water. Some volunteers will hand out runner refresh materials while others will assist with removing light, ground-based finish line branding, rolling snow fence and re-packing remaining finisher medals and bottled water. Light physical labor is involved in this role.
• Final Approach: Volunteers will be stationed in the Final Approach area, a high energy section along the final stretch of the course where the finish line comes into view for participants. Spectators crowd the final turn as well as a cheer area near Mile 26. During the race volunteers assist with crowd control near the Final Approach gates along Michigan Avenue and Roosevelt Road. Volunteers will also assist with setup and cleanup of the area.
• Saturday Finish Line Medal Set Up: In preparation for race day, volunteers will enjoy music and the company of fellow volunteers and event staff when working on this easy task as they unpack, inventory and repack finisher medals.
HARRISON VOLUNTEER COMPOUND
Harrison Volunteer Compound volunteers will be stationed in the Harrison Volunteer Compound, where responsibilities will include electronically checking in volunteers on iPads, jacket distribution, replenishing jackets and carrying boxes, replenishing snacks, distributing sandwiches and breaking down boxes. Training and instruction will be provided on-site when you arrive.
HOSPITALITY
Hospitality volunteers will welcome and assist participants and guests in the hospitality venues which include Finish Line Lounge, Premier Runner Program and Skyline Hospitality. Volunteer roles include checking in guests, distributing runner supplies, gear check, guiding participants to the start and finish lines and maintaining an upbeat attitude and atmosphere within the venues.
IT VOLUNTEERS
IT volunteers will be stationed in various locations throughout Grant Park to assist with race results look up and provide general IT support.
SUSTAINABILITY (GREEN TEAM AND START HYDRATION) VOLUNTEERS
Sustainability volunteers will fill the following roles.
• Green Team: This is a hands-on position and requires outgoing volunteers energized to make a difference! Volunteers will assist runners to correctly recycle and compost specific products distributed by the event such as water bottles, Gatorade cups, banana peels and food.
• Start Hydration: Volunteers will serve at one of the three pre-race hydration stations setting up the station, mixing Gatorade, pouring and distributing fluids and cleaning up the hydration station. Volunteers may be asked to assist with Gatorade Chews, placed next to the hydration station.
PARTICIPANT PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS
Participant Program volunteers will fill the following roles:
• Achilles Freedom Team: Volunteers will help participants in the handcycle division with getting athletes and their handcycle to the start line, and transporting their personal gear and equipment from the start line to the finish line and to the athletes’ transportation vehicles.
• Para Athletics Finish Tent: Volunteers will assist event staff with the operations of the Para Athletics Finish Tent.
• Para Athletics Guide Team: Volunteers will assist event staff with escorting para athletes to the Start Line.
• Pro Athlete Finish Guides: Volunteers will be positioned at the Finish Line area with world renowned athletes. Volunteers will escort professional athletes from the finish line to the Pro Athlete Finish Tent. Top finishers (male, female and wheelchair male and female) are required to do media appearances at the finish line and to receive awards, so volunteers will also need to go back and forth from the Pro Athlete Finish Tent to grab the athletes’ bags and warm-ups, drinks, etc. Once all participants have crossed the start line, volunteers will assist with start line tear down and help pick up discarded clothing items that will be donated as part of the event sustainability program.
• USADA Pro Athlete Chaperones: This position is extremely important as volunteers work alongside the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to ensure the highest standards and ethics of international, world-class competition. Chaperones accompany professional athletes selected for drug testing immediately from the finish line in Grant Park to their post-race obligations (Pro Athlete Finish Tent, Pro Athlete Massage and Media Center) and then to the USADA drug testing rooms located inside the Hilton Hotel.
PARTICIPANT SERVICES (GEAR CHECK AND INFO TEAM) VOLUNTEERS
Participant Services volunteers will fill the following roles.
• Gear Check: Volunteers will be stationed in the Gear Check facilities where they will collect and organize gear check bags from participants before the race and return bags after the race.
• Info Team: Info Team volunteers assist race participants, spectators and other volunteers by providing general information and directions to key destinations in Grant Park and answering any questions they may have about the event. For this assignment, volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and should be able to stand for four or more hours.
POST-RACE PARTY BEER VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers will be stationed at the beer tent at the 27th Mile Post-Race Party. Tasks include serving beer to participants ages 21 and over and helping to keep the area clean and organized. For this position, volunteers must be 21 years of age or older.
SECTION 4: COURSE VOLUNTEERS
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon course starts and finishes in Grant Park and travels through one of the world’s most magnificent cities.
Volunteers supporting course operations should be aware of the following.
What are the responsibilities of a course volunteer?
• Aid Station Volunteer: Volunteers will distribute water and Gatorade to race participants and assist with the setup and cleanup of the Aid Station.
• Bike Marshal: Bike Marshals ensure that the course is clear of spectators in advance of the professional wheelchair athletes and runners.
• Biofreeze Pain Relief Zone: The Biofreeze Pain Relief Zone is located along the Bank of America Chicago Marathon course in Chinatown. Participants can take advantage of Biofreeze samples. Volunteers will support setup, upkeep and cleanup of this station.
• Course Marshal: Course marshal responsibilities include making sure the course stays clear of traffic and vehicles, ensuring the safety of participants and spectators and acting as a source of information about the event and surrounding neighborhood. Course marshal volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and should be able to stand for four or more hours.
• Gel Station Volunteer: Volunteers will distribute Maurten Gels to participants on course and assist with the setup, upkeep and cleanup of this station.
• Pro Athlete Fluids Station: Pro Athlete fluids volunteers are responsible for setup and cleanup of the Pro Athlete fluid tables on the Bank of America Chicago Marathon course route.

SECTION 5: MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers supporting the medical team should be aware of the following.
What are the responsibilities of a medical volunteer?
Medical volunteers are responsible for assisting with the safety of and providing medical care to runners, spectators and other event staff and volunteers. Assignments will be determined by the Medical Committee and communicated in your Race Week Confirmation Email. Please note that your assignment may change at the discretion of the Medical Committee on race morning based on race day conditions and volunteer attrition.
