VOLUNTEER KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Volunteers play an important part in creating a safe and fun experience for all event attendees. We encourage you to read through the section specific to the area you will be supporting race weekend. The volunteer areas include:

• Packet Pick-up Volunteers

• West Side Wellness Event Volunteers

In addition to reviewing the information in this guide, you will receive training specific to your program area after checking into your volunteer shift.

SECTION 1 | PACKET PICK-UP

A two-day Packet Pick-up will be held in advance of the event for race participants. Volunteers supporting this area should be aware of the following.

What are the responsibilities of a Packet Pick-up volunteer?

• T-shirts: Volunteers will distribute t-shirts to participants, as well as assist with set up and clean up. Individuals with strong customer service skills are encouraged to volunteer for this role.

• Bib distribution: Volunteers will welcome participants, verify their bib tag and confirm their participant information (displayed on an iPad) before releasing the bib to them. Individuals with strong customer service skills are encouraged to volunteer for this role. For this position, volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

When is my shift?

Packet Pick-up is on Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31. Please refer to your race week confirmation email for your specific shift details.

Where do I check-in for my shift?

Packet Pick-up is located at Roosevelt Collection (150 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL, 60605). Please arrive at your scheduled shift start time and report to Volunteer Check-in.

How do I get there?

Public transportation: Public transportation is highly encouraged. Roosevelt Collection is accessible from the following CTA lines:

• Red/Green/Orange Line Trains – Take the Roosevelt Station stop. Walk west on Roosevelt Rd. for roughly one and a half blocks and then turn right on S. Delano Ct.

• #12 Roosevelt Bus – Take the Roosevelt and Delano stop.

• #29 State Bus – Take the State and Roosevelt stop. Walk west on Roosevelt Rd. for roughly one and a half blocks and then turn right on S. Delano Ct.

Parking: Parking is available at the Roosevelt Collection parking garage. We recommend parking on P2 in the Red/North section and taking the elevator up to the plaza to get to Packet Pick-up. The cost of parking will be reimbursed for volunteers. Please inquire about reimbursement when you arrive at Volunteer Check-in.

What should I wear?

All volunteers will receive a complimentary t-shirt and hat when they arrive to check-in. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes.

Is food provided?

Snacks and water are provided to all volunteers. Additionally, volunteers who sign up for multiple shifts may receive a meal depending on the duration of their shift(s). Please note that while we try to provide a range of food items, we cannot guarantee that snacks will accommodate all dietary restrictions.

Will a supervisor be present to provide instructions and support me, as needed, during my volunteer shift?

Yes. All volunteers will be introduced to their supervisor upon arrival. Your supervisor will provide training specific to your role, and they will be available throughout your shift to support you as needed. If you have any issues with your supervisor or need additional support, please report back to Volunteer Check-in for further assistance.

SECTION 2: WEST SIDE WELLNESS EVENT

The Bank of America Chicago 13.1 is excited to work with the West Side community to offer wellness-based activities race weekend. The goal of these events and activities is to support, advance and celebrate health, wellness and movement on Chicago’s West Side. Activities include a family-friendly 1.31-Mile Wellness Walk, youth running events and opportunities to showcase local West Side businesses and organizations. Volunteers supporting this area should be aware of the following.

What are the responsibilities of a West Side Wellness Event volunteer?

Volunteers will support West Side Wellness Walk and Youth Event participants. Volunteer tasks for the Wellness Walk include race day bib pick-up, course marshal, start line and finish line. Following the Walk volunteers will support the Youth Events. You will receive your specific assignment and more instructions at check-in.

When is my shift?

The Saturday events take place on Saturday, May 31. Please refer to your race week confirmation email for your specific shift details.

Where do I check-in for my shift?

Your volunteer role will be in Garfield Park. All Garfield Park volunteers will check-in at the Volunteer Compound. When you arrive, follow event signage to reach the Garfield Park Volunteer Compound. You will be required to show your race week confirmation email (printed or on your phone) to access the Volunteer Compound. Click here to view a map.

How do I get there?

• Parking: Please utilize legal street parking around Garfield Park.

• Public transportation: The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) offers an economical and convenient way to check out all Chicago has to offer. For information on CTA fares and transit directions to and from the event visit transitchicago.com.

• Rideshare: Volunteers utilizing rideshare to access Garfield Park on race day will be dropped off at the intersection of Homan Avenue and Warren Boulevard (40 N. Homan Ave.) on the east side of Garfield Park.

What should I wear?

You will receive a complimentary t-shirt, hat and credential when you check-in. In addition to the items you will receive, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes during your shift. We also encourage you to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. The event will go on rain or shine!

Is food provided?

Snacks and water are provided to all volunteers. Please note that while we try to provide a range of food items, we cannot guarantee that snacks will accommodate all dietary restrictions.

SECTION 3: GARFIELD PARK VOLUNTEERS

The Bank of America Chicago 13.1 will take place in Garfield Park on Sunday, June 1.

Volunteers working in Garfield Park should be aware of the following general volunteer information and area specific information. Continue reading after the FAQ for more information on Start, Finish, Sustainability, Participant Services (Gear Check and Info Team) and Race Day Festival volunteer roles.

When is my shift?

Where do I check-in for my shift?

Your volunteer role will be in Garfield Park. All Garfield Park volunteers will check-in at the Volunteer Compound. When you arrive, follow event signage to reach the Garfield Park Volunteer Compound. • Rideshare: Volunteers utilizing rideshare to access Garfield Park on race day will be dropped off at the intersection of Homan Ave. and Warren Blvd. (40 N. Homan Ave.) on the east side of Garfield Park.

• Race day bike valet: A courtesy secured valet bike corral will be available at the northeast corner of Central Park Avenue and Madison Street within Garfield Park for bike parking. Bike valets will be monitored by event personnel.

• Race day parking and shuttle: If you plan on driving, please be aware of street closures and plan extra travel time to accommodate for traffic. Legal street parking is limited near the start and finish lines in Garfield Park. Parking and a shuttle service will be available for free at the Halsted/Taylor Parking Structure with parking entrances at 760 W. Taylor Street and 763 W. Polk St, located on the campus of University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). The shuttle to Garfield Park will operate from 4 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The final shuttle leaves Garfield Park at 11:45 a.m. Shuttles will drop off and pick up volunteers on the south side of Garfield Park at Madison Street and St. Louis Avenue near Gate 1. More information on the race day shuttle is available at chicago13point1.com/shuttle.

Snacks, water and coffee are provided to all volunteers in the Garfield Park Volunteer Compound. Please enjoy offerings after you check-in or come back for a break throughout your shift! Please note that while we try to provide a range of food items, we cannot guarantee that snacks will accommodate all dietary restrictions.

Will a supervisor be present to provide instructions and support me, as needed, during my volunteer shift?

Yes. All volunteers will be introduced to their supervisor upon arrival. Your supervisor will provide training specific to your role, and they will be available throughout your shift to support you as needed. If you have any issues with your supervisor or need additional support, please report back to Volunteer Check-in for further assistance.

RACE DAY FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS

Race Day Festival volunteers will be stationed in the beer tent located inside the Festival, where they will pour and serve beer to participants ages 21 and over, as well as help keep the area clean and organized. All volunteers will assist with ID checking for a portion of their shift. Please note that all volunteers must be 21 years of age or older for this position.

SECTION 4: COURSE VOLUNTEERS

The Bank of America Chicago 13.1 course starts and finishes in Garfield Park with scenic loops through Douglass and Humboldt Parks.

Volunteers supporting course operations should be aware of the following.

What are the responsibilities of a course volunteer?

• Aid Station Volunteer: Volunteers will distribute water and Nuun Hydration to race participants, as well as assist with the set up and clean-up of the Aid Station.

• Bike Marshal: Bike Marshals ensure that the course is clear of spectators in advance of the elite wheelchair athletes and runners.

• Course Marshal: Course marshal responsibilities include making sure the course stays clear of traffic and vehicles, ensuring the safety of participants and spectators, and acting as a source of information about the event and surrounding neighborhood. Course marshal volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and should be able to stand for 4 or more hours.

• Gel Station Volunteer: Volunteers will distribute Maurten Gels to participants on course, as well as assist with the set-up, upkeep, and clean-up of this station.

Where do check-in for my shift?

Course volunteers report directly to their Aid Station, Gel Station or Course Marshal Check-in location located along the course. Please refer to your race week confirmation email for your specific location details.

How do I get there?

• Public transportation: The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) offers an economical and convenient way to check out all Chicago has to offer. For information on CTA fares and transit directions to and from the event visit transitchicago.com.

• Parking: If you plan on driving, please be aware of street closures and plan extra travel time to accommodate for traffic. Please reach out to your Captain before race day to discuss parking options.
