Envision an innovative initiative like “The Drop” on the remarkable Farallon Islands—a testament to sustainable technology and community-driven innovation.

Inspired by the groundbreaking concept of the Warka Tower, our team ideated a fog-catching system using state-of-the-art nano-engineered mesh. While this project remains conceptual for now, the vision was clear: addressing water scarcity while supporting island scientists and the indigenous plant ecosystem.

“The Drop” symbolizes a harmonious blend of ingenuity and environmental stewardship. Our concept aimed to emulate nature’s fog phenomenon, harnessing and transforming it into essential water resources. This theoretical approach guarantees a reliable water supply for the island’s scientific community and contributes significantly to the preservation and nurturing of the distinct local flora.

Our visionary design envisioned strategically positioning these innovative towers along the pathway to the existing lighthouse. The community-based blueprint featured five towers, soaring 30 feet high and spanning 13 feet in width, integrating advanced nano-engineered mesh technology inspired by the Warka Tower concept, promising enhanced fog collection efficiency.

One notable aspect of this conceptual project was its cost-effectiveness. The imagined implementation utilized minimal building expenses while projecting a water yield of 25-30 gallons per tower, contingent on varying weather conditions and seasonal changes. “The Drop” represented more than a water harvesting system—it epitomized collaboration, sustainability, and leveraging nature’s resources to envision a brighter future for the Farallon Islands.

Purpose Fog is absorbed into the mesh.

In urban and industrial settings fog droplets can become contaminated with dangerous levels of organic pollutants, many linked to cancer or other serious health problems, making the collected water unsafe to drink.

Material

The coating, a polymer consisting of titanium dioxide nanoparticles, has the unique ability to stay reactive once exposed to sunlight.

Once collected, is treat to make it safe for drinking.

Conclusion This project started with our basic understanding of AutoCAD and has flourished into a fully illustrated idea. This project and the course have made us stronger designers and landscape architects.
