“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” The Los Angeles Premiere of “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” took place at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood Boulevard on a Monday night but that didn’t stop a Who’s Who of the movie industry from turning up to support of Quentin Tarantino and his long awaited, star-studded movie.

Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie are the main stars of the film, which includes cameos from Al Pacino (Marvin Shwarz), Dakota Fanning (Lynette Alice “Squeaky” Fromme), Rumer Wilson (Joanna Pettet), Kurt Russell (Randy), Bruce Dern (George Spahn), Damian Lewis (Steve McQueen) and the late Luke Perry (Wayne Maunder) to name just a few!
The huge ensemble cast of “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” includes Margaret Qualley, who looked sensational in a Prada rhinestone mesh dress over a grey bustier and skirt and also deserves a big shout out for her stellar performance in this movie. Rumer Willis rocked the red carpet in a Lily Wrap dress from One Oak Pairam and Mike Moh opted for Emporio Armani. Sydney Sweeney sashayed in Miu Miu and Maya Hawke donned an Olivier Theyskens trouser suit, Rupert Sanderson pumps and an Epona Valley Field of Roses Crown.

The red carpet was awash with ‘A-Llisters’ and it wasn’t just the women who were flashing designer duds. Brad Pitt teamed a custom suit by David August with a white shirt and clearly preferring the casual look, he left his tie at home. Co-star Leonardo DiCaprio kept it formal in a steel blue, made-tomeasure, Georgio Armani suit and tie and Margot Robbie chose to pay tribute to old Hollywood in an ivory, floor length Chanel gown with bell sleeves gathered at the wrist, bold copper eyeshadow and Chanel accessories. Director, Quentin Tarantino also went for the classic look in a black tux and bow tie.

for this film he not only sourced radio and tv shows, adverts, props and music from the era to set the scene, he actually used some of his own memorabilia in the movie. His obsession didn’t stop there; Hollywood Boulevard and several other neighbourhoods were given a 1960’s makeover with specially built façades. Spahn Ranch, which was home to Charles Manson and his followers and was once a film location for westerns and tv shows like “Bonanza” and “The Lone Ranger” burned down years ago, so the entire location was recreated from scratch, then aged to make it look authentic.

As Rick tries to engineer a Hollywood comeback he’s racked with insecurity and self doubt and when the ultimate shame of forgetting his lines prompts an angst ridden meltdown in his trailer, Cliff picks up the pieces, boosts his pal’s ego and persuades him to accept an offer from Marvin Shwarz (Al Pacino) to move temporarily to Italy to star in Spaghetti Westerns in a bid to boost his bankability.
This is the first time ever that Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have worked on a movie together and with box office takings soaring, Hollywood insiders are already betting that this partnership is a keeper. The two actors did both work on the American TV show, “Growing Pains” many, many years ago, but they never actually acted in a scene together. “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” is set in Los Angeles in 1969 and centres on the relationship between Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Rick is a washed-up actor desperately trying to hang onto his career in an industry that’s changing by the minute and his best friend Cliff has been by his side for nearly a decade 6 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA

we get a taste of their lifestyle during scenes at the Playboy Mansion, which, back in the day was the place to be; including it in the film was genius, it highlights the glamour of 1960’s LA and portrays Sharon Tate as part of the popular Hollywood set. When they return to LA, Cliff drops Rick at the studio, collects his own car from Cielo Drive and is planning to head home to his trailer, but on the way he spots a young girl he saw hitching a ride at the bus stop earlier with her friends. Now, Kitty Kat (Margaret Qualley) is hitching alone so he agrees to take her back to Spahn Ranch where she’s living with Charles Manson and the other disciples, but things don’t exactly go as planned. The rest of the movie unfolds in classic Tarantino style and showcases some of the best acting I’ve ever seen from Brad Pitt, but to find out what happens next you’ll have to go and see it!!

Cuba comes to Mallorca, and the temperature just went up a notch
HOTEL HABANA
What a great night out! Hotel Habana is absolutely worthy of the extended run of shows that have been added by popular demand because this style of show doesn’t come along that often. As beautiful as Mallorca is, and the tranquility that it brings by living here, there is also a need for high-energy performances to stimulate even the most zen person. When you marry the South American rhythms with the raw acting talents and skilled acrobatics of the cast of Hotel Habana, you get circus meets musical with dance, all under one very huge tent, and it’s nothing short of spectacular. I went and met the cast to grab a photo opportunity just before curtain call, and had to tell them that this was my second helping of this wonderful show. Hotel Habana is a production from the LetsGo group who are show producers and promoters combining burlesque, comedy, live music, circus routines and humour, 8 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA

which is seen in their successful show,The Hole. Hotel Habana is an insight of the magic that is Cuba. Highlights on the night were definitely the acrobatics, the singers and their choice of songs. Like the classic ‘Besame Mucho’, which was sung so beautifully and was a very romantic moment within the show, or the Cuban, high-energy version of ‘I Will Survive’, at which point the entire audience jumped to their feet and started dancing
in response to the casts performance and interpretation of this popular anthem. The show runs for three hours with a 20 minute intermission and the standing ovation that I witnessed on both nights that I attended proved to me that three hours just wasn’t enough. Hotel Habana is touring around Spain and if you happen to be in the vicinity of the show, then grab a ticket - you won’t be disappointed!

THE MASTER AT WORK Louie Vega has been dominating the music scene for over 30 years, with a back-catalogue of songs and instrumentals that proves why he is still as relevant today as he was when he first started. Unafraid of fusing styles and sounds in a way that almost adds a new genre to music, and creating uplifting beats and grooves that touches you deep inside, you begin to have an insight into why the man and his music have not only earned him universal appeal, but also a grammy award. Being a huge fan of MAW (Masters At Work), which comprises of the production talents of Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, I partied hard back in the day, dancing on tables in front of the speakers in the soulful house room at The Cross in King’s Cross in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. The MAW track ‘To Be In Love’ (featuring the powerhouse that is India, with background vocal contributions from the great Lisa Fischer) was a highlight track for many of the guest DJ’s and a guaranteed floor filler. This was the turning point for me to seek more delicious sounds from The Masters, and believe me there are many. I popped down to Social Club in Palma, who have been at the forefront this year with a feast of headliners, to check out his set. he is a top pick for the venue, and he is my guest for my Q&A section this edition.
1. If you hadn’t become a DJ/musician what do you think you would be doing now? I’d probably be flying planes. I was about to go to college in Florida and decided in my heart DJing is what I wanted to do and thought I could make a profession out of it. 2. What got you into music? Music has always been a huge part of my life, since I was born from my dad playing his sax and listening to John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Fania Music, to going to block parties and jams in the projects with Bam, Jazzy Jay, Red Alert, to my sisters going to the Loft in the early 70s to later years at the Gallery, Paradise Garage, and many other NYC Clubs. My uncle being one of the greatest salsa singers of all time, seeing him in concert as a child to listening and growing up with music by Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, The Doors, Joni Mitchell, The Mizelle Brothers, Leroy Burgess & Patrick Adams, I could go on. 3. What is the best song you have ever released and why? Nuyorican Soul album. With this album we (Kenny Gonzalez and I) were able to give you some history of us growing up in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and New York City to so many diverse sounds. We were able to put it on one album with a dream team of artists that are icons to us all!!! 4. What music or artists are you listening to at the moment. I listen to various artists in different genres: D’Angelo, Solange , Kruangbin, Anderson Paak, Donny Hathway , Steely Dan , Tears For Fears , Childish Gambino , Jay Dilla , Thelonius Monk , Chaka Khan, Roy Ayers Mike Dunn , Larry Levan Works , Les McCann, Josh Milan , Manoo , Nulu that’s just a few. 5. What’s been your favourite place to perform? - My favourite performance this year was at Royal Festival Hall on Jan 31, with my full band Elements Of Life featuring Josh Milan, Anané, Zara McFarlane, a
two-hour show we presented for our lovely people in London and Europe. - Tokyo is always a favourite, playing at Contact and Ageha. Every year we do a Masters At Work day in November in Tokyo at Ageha and it’s one of our favourite parties to do !!!! It has now become an annual event with primitive promotions. - Performing at the Love Supreme festival this summer with the Elements Of Life Band featuring Josh Milan & Anane in a wonderful park north of London. Then after the concert a few hours later I played one of the stages with a DJ set and a super great crowd! - The Ritual with Anané & Louie Vega at Heart, our residency, We did some special events with our guests Moodymann, Joseph Capriati, The Martinez Brothers, & Masters At Work in Ibiza. - My party in New York City Expansions where I do six hour journeys with great dancers. My residency in NYC. - Dour Festival with Masters At Work was awesome. Those come to mind now. 6. Please explain your creative process as a producer It happens in many ways, first comes the inspiration, then I go into the studio with lots of ideas and grooves in my head, and bring them to fruition. Sometimes I use musicians in the studio like one of my collaborators Axel Tosca, who is a very talented keyboard player and musician. I have my bass player Gene Perez, my percussionist Luisito Quintero, and my engineer and programmer Yas Inoue. Or sometimes its just me on a keyboard and my engineer behind the board. In one night on an overdub session I come with 3-4 tracks a night so lots of music is made and are used for various projects I see fit. For me it’s all about vibe, I know how to put albums together and concepts that come from my mind. Right now I’m working on a new house album called “Expansions In The NYC” where I’m collaborating with a few friends from around the world but also getting lots
of inspiration from my party in at home, Expansions NYC. Some of my special guests are: Robyn, The Martinez Brothers, Honey Dijon, and more …. it will be on Nervous Records. 7. What is an average day like for you? Lots of music, office work, days are different all the time, I’m usually touring a lot or if I’m home I try and relax as much as possible, but that rarely happens. The mind is in a highly creative state especially late at night. 8. Wich emoji do you use the most? The little guy holding up his arms. 9. What is your favourite part about this line of work? And your least favourite? My favourite is seeing the outcome of a creation, when you can hit the emotions in people with your music and you actually see it and feel it, it’s higher level. My least favourite is travelling to so many planes, it wears you down. 10. What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? When you make music and play it, always come from the heart. Work hard and if you do, you’ll see your lane open. Create your own identity as a DJ. Get a lawyer (who understands the entertainment business) when things get to the stage of business doings. Also learn to read your own contracts and ask questions if you don’t understand, you have your lawyer there who knows. Don’t just sign a contract because you are excited. It takes hard work but always know you can achieve, you can make any dream happen if you put your mind to it and put in the effort in all you do.

MALLORCA VOICES Having been in Mallorca for just a little over a year and a half, I am still discovering some of the best vocalists and tribute singers that grace the stages and venues all across this beautiful island. What a treat to walk into a bar, beach club and hear voices that are good enough to be recognised on a global scale. I understand this world, you get paid for what you do, there’s no competition because the singers are singing the familiar songs we all know and love, and there’s no Simon Cowell judging whether they will succeed or not. It is about building a repertoire of cover songs that will appeal to the holiday makers, year after year. There are still other singers on the island entertaining the crowds that I am yet to listen to but here are a seven entertainers that I have personally seen and heard, and even connected with, on some level, and I wanted to shine the AAA spotlight on their efforts and recommend that you go and check them out *if you haven’t seen them already!)

The world’s love affair with Love Island and its Islanders continued this week as one of the most popular couples to emerge from the series returned to Mallorca for their first holiday together since the show finished. Belle Hassan and Anton Danyluk spent a blissful three days together in the south of the island staying at the five-star adults-only Secrets Mallorca Villamil Resort & Spa. After being spotted on the beach at sunset they took the five-minute drive to Port d’Andratx to explore the marina and its yachts and finished the evening at Restaurant Verico. The Italian gourmet restaurant is well known due to its rating as the number one choice on Trip Advisor for fine dining in Mallorca. The Love Island couple were treated to a delicious “Degustacion” menu which is a client favourite at the restaurant. Following the meal, Belle wrote on her Instagram “Thank you so much to Verico for our amazing food, a perfect end to our last night on holiday”. They also posed for photos in front of the restaurant’s impressive collection of rare wines with the owners’ family and Verico staff.

True Gold with
Tony Hadley An appreciative crowd enjoyed a journey back in time to the glory days of Spandau Ballet when Tony Hadley and his band performed at Port Adriano in August. Hadley co-founded the New Romantic band in the mid Seventies with his schoolmates Gary Kemp, Steve Norman, John Keeble and Michael Ellison and they went on to enjoy international success in the Eighties with many hits, probably the best known being “True”, “Gold” and “Through the Barricades”. Tony Hadley also enjoyed extensive success as a solo artist after the group split and is well known for his workaholic attitude to
touring, notching up 220 gigs just last year! Tony Hadley has been a frequent visitor to Mallorca over his career and was supported from the audience by several well known faces from the British resident community of the island. Laughing, joking, smiling and throwing some shapes throughout his 90 minute set, Tony seemed to be really enjoying himself performing a mixture of his old hits and the less familiar material from his new album. On arriving at the performance of “Through the Barricades” he cracked open a bottle of Jack Daniels and toasted the audience and the song before launching into
it with his familiar full throttle style. As he reached the climax of the evening he again stopped and toasted the classic slow dance song “True” (we imagine many readers will probably have had at least one smooch at the school disco to that one), before rounding out the night with an energetic rendition of “We Will Rock You” made famous by his friend Freddie Mercury from Queen with whom he appeared on the bill of Live Aid in 1985! A great night under the stars with a great band and a great front man, come back soon Tony!

Arturo Rhodes is a British surrealist painter who settled in Deià nearly 40 years ago and fans of his work include Sinéad O’Connor, Sir Richard Branson, John Cleese, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and Caroline Corr.

When we meet in the back streets of Deià I can tell by his purple ensemble that he’s definitely a one off. We chat as we walk up the steep steps to a beautiful stone cottage. Inside is absolute chaos, there’s paintings everywhere, the walls are covered, there’s hundreds leaning against the walls and still more waiting to be finished. Upstairs in his studio, glass jars, mugs and vases are stuffed with paint brushes and there’s pots of paint in every colour dotted all over the place, I absolutely love it. Born into a working class English family in 1944, Arturo grew up in suburbia with his brother and sister and was encouraged to draw by his auntie Jessie.
“She was my favourite auntie and she was the first person to take an interest in me, my parents just didn’t get it,” he confides. “When I was very young she showed me how to draw a rabbit and I still do paintings with rabbits in them now.” Secondary school was a bit of a trial by all 14 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
accounts but he survived, studied Graphic Design at Watford Art College, then did a Fine Arts Course at St Albans and after that his bohemian lifestyle kicked into high gear. “It was the early 1960’s,” he recalls, “and I spent a couple of years roaming around England with a backpack, reading Brave New World and Jean Paul Sartre and going to live concerts, which is what everyone was doing back then.”
He caught the travel bug after a super-brief stint on a Kibbutz in Israel, taking trips to Greece, Turkey and Sweden where he learned how to make jewellery and leather goods. That financed more travels to Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and America and he was actually on the point of returning to the UK when fate stepped in. “I met someone at a cocktail party in New York and I somehow ended up with this job as an Illustrator, which was completely crazy, I wasn’t even looking for a job,” he insists. “My money had run
out and I was about to fly back to London, but then I got offered this job out of the blue and after just one drawing they hired me to do a couple every week, so I ended up doing illustrations and cartoons for The New York Times for a couple of years. It really was a stroke of luck.”
When the 1980’s dawned, Arturo packed his bags once more and this time headed for India in search of spiritual enlightenment; he stayed on Osho and Sai Baba Ashrams and studied Tibetan Buddhism with a master in Kathmandu before eventually returning to the UK. “I arrived back in England in January and hated it,” he shrugs, “so with the last of my money I went to Barcelona to see Gaudi’s Cathedral and then to Figueres where Dali had his thing because I was always a big fan.”

that at the end is a bit heavy duty, but then sitting in an old people’s home looking at the world through your cataracts is also heavy duty, so i really don’t know.”
Arturo, “kind of a shy genius, very sensitive, a bit strange and an amazing cook. I used to go to these incredible parties at his house, life was very different back then, you know.” Arturo says inspiration for his paintings can come from a single word, dream or phrase and occasionally from nature itself.
Arturo partied in Ibiza for a while then moved to Mallorca in 1981 and picked up a paintbrush for the first time in years. “I noticed that there were artists selling paintings in the bars,” he recalls, “so I started doing watercolours in Deià and I sold the first one for 20 or 30 euros I think.” Arturo was a close friend of the British musician, singer, songwriter, Kevin Ayers, who was one of the founding members of the band, Soft Machine and lived in Deià on and off for 30 years. He died in 2013 and his ashes are buried in Deià cemetery. “I knew Kevin very well, he was a brilliant musician who wrote beautiful songs,” says

“I was commissioned to paint a picture of olive trees and I thought, oh no! everyone has done olive trees,” he says, “so I painted it but it was just empty and lacking something, then the next day a puput just flew in front of my car and I thought that’s what that painting needs, so I put it in and it really made a difference.” Now 75, I asked Arturo if he’s planning on staying in Deià for the rest of his life and joining his friends up on the hill when his time comes? “My original plan at the end was to go to Varanasi and die in one of those cheap doss houses and be burned on the ghat where hundreds of bodies are burned every day in plain sight,” he reveals. “That was my original plan, but now i don’t know, to do CELEBRITY MALLORCA | 15

Celebrity talks to
Hanna and Martin from RHOC

Hanna Miraftab and Martin Kinsella are probably best known recently for their parts on Real Housewives of Cheshire but there is much, much more to this power couple than meets the eye.
Meeting the couple at their hotel in Bendinat, they are both friendly and greet me warmly as I sit down and order my beer. I have met Martin on several occasions, but this was my first-time meeting Hanna. She is instantly charming and warm and makes you feel like you have known her for years. We start to chat and after a few minutes the “interview” just becomes more of a friendly chat.
Martin begins the conversation by telling me about their trip - he has been coming to Mallorca for over 14 years and owns a successful aesthetic clinic on the island and makes multiple trips from the UK every year to see his extensive client base. “Mallorca is like a second home to us. I didn’t pick Mallorca out of a hat to open the clinic. I have family friends here on the island and it made sense to open a clinic here to complement the clinics in Manchester and London,” Martin tells me. In the last five years, the clinic has skyrocketed and become a successful and respected centre for a diverse selection of clients and Martin puts this down to wordof-mouth. non-surgical treatments such as threadlifts, medical skincare and botox and Martin’s expertise in this area is clear with the authority and passion with which he discusses the procedures. Hanna, in her own right, is a successful dentist with a masters that she says gave her a higher level of understanding and works in Manchester providing dental treatments to her clients. The two medical disciplines work well together and Martin is also a fully qualified dentist - it is actually how he and Hanna met and Martin believes that his experience in dentistry helps with the aesthetic work he does and was worth studying. Aside from their busy and successful careers, the couple have become well-known in the UK for appearing in the popular TV show, the Real Housewives of Cheshire. I asked them both how they ended up as part of the show. “It started because the production company had approached Martin to be part of the show as either the in-house doctor or as a sideline character, but this wasn’t what he wanted for his clinic,” Hanna tells me. “A while later we talked about it and I thought it was a great platform for me, as a career woman, to inspire people by being part of a group of seven other successful women with completely different characters. There are not many women that are doctors, or dentists, on TV that can show people that if you work hard you can have a great lifestyle and I think this is really important.”
We move on to discuss some exciting news their wedding! Hanna and Martin are engaged to be married in September and, between all of the filming and their career obligations, are in the process of planning their dream wedding. They are getting married in Liverpool where they met, a place that is very special to both of them. Hanna tells me “every time we drive into Liverpool it is a really nostalgic place for us. All of the feelings of university and meeting come back and for me, it was a place that really shaped me as an adult, and it will always have a special place in my heart”. We wish the couple a fantastic wedding and look forward to catching up with them when they are back in Mallorca to find out about their special day.

The city of Palma was on fire on 11th of July! The Glam Charity & Art Experience took place at the Gabriel Vanrell Gallery, in collaboration with JoyRon Foundation. The purpose of the charity is to help children in need in the Balearic Islands by collecting the funds that will be applied to provide essential support to children in need. The arising artist ICON ZAR invited all to the live painting performance and put the paintings up for the silent auction. Opera sounds, colours and generosity were the greatest elements of the night.

Teixits Riera, The Fabric Of Mallorca By Wendy Wighton Urquhart
In 1896, the village of Biniamar came alive with clatter of looms as Gabriel Riera opened his textile workshop, teixits Riera, and employed weavers to make handcrafted Mallorcan fabric. 44 years later, the factory transferred to Lloseta where it now produces more than 70 stunningly unique Mallorcan fabrics which are 70% cotton and 30% linen. Biel Riera, who runs the family business alongside his mother, Catalina Crespí, told me the factory has always been like a home from home. Biel Riera, who runs the family business alongside his mother, Catalina Crespí, told me the factory has always been like a home from home. “I have so many good memories of the factory because I grew up there,” he recalls. “When I was little, my grandmother and grandfather lived on the first floor and my father and mother worked in the factory downstairs. I used to come here after school from 5pm until 8pm to play and to watch

them work and then I went home with my mum and dad. When I was 18 my father died and I started working here full time to help my mum and I just love this work”
The manufacturing process takes around 2 months from start to finish and consists of several different stages. First the cotton is put in the warping machine, which basically spools the yarn from its cones, puts it through a tensing mechanism and places it in evenly spaced parallel lines on a warp beam. It’s then removed from the warping machine by hand and different sized knots are tied in it, so the dye only reaches specific areas and that’s what creates the design. Next, the fibres are placed in a boiler and
dyed for a few hours, before the knots are taken out and the fibres are put it on the roof to dry, which takes 3 days in the summer and 2 weeks in winter. Once the fibres are dry they are warped a second time, in a different place and with colour; the design is shaped by hand while fibres are warping, which is the most difficult part of the process. The fibres are then woven on an automatic loom and later checked by quality control.
The fabric is available in striped, marbled and plain patterns, but the most popular is Ikat which is also known as “Roba de llengües”. Ikat designs have been traced to

many places far and wide, including Latin America, Asia and Indonesia and they reportedly first appeared in Europe when the Silk Route was opened up by Asian and European merchants in the 5th century. The exotic fabric was snapped up by the wealthy in France and Italy and quickly became a symbol of prosperity. It was only after looms started appearing in Europe in the 13th century and production soared that ordinary people were able to afford Ikat. These unusual designs were first documented in Mallorca in the 18th century and Biel is fiercely proud of the part his family has played in Mallorca’s textile history. He is also constantly looking for ways to update the original designs without losing their authenticity and producing new patterns that compliment the company’s artisanal roots. “We have to meet the needs of customers, both old and new,” he assures me. “So, I am introducing new colours and patterns, but I still use the designs of my father and grandfather and i’ve added new colours to some of them to expand the range.” Teixits Riera exports worldwide through its website, www.riera.com and the company has a number of customers in England, but Biel says he’s not that worried about Brexit. “I don’t think Brexit will effect us very much because we are a small company so really it’s only for the Customs in England,” he says. “Now, shipping is very easy but Customs
will probably take one or two days more than before Brexit and we’ll have to pay the taxes, which is a process that’s much quicker if the UK remains in Europe.” There are a number of companies that produce fabric with the Mallorcan geometric design but Biel says it’s very easy to tell what’s authentic and what’s not. “The real fabric is dyed and it’s a mix of cotton and linen, so the feel of the product is very different, the colours are brighter and the pattern is exactly the same on both sides.” he explains. “The other fabric is not dyed, it’s printed and usually just on one side, so the colours are much different and the material is very soft because it’s just cotton.
Teixits Riera supplies a raft of products including, cushions, runners, bags, espadrilles, placemats, curtains, lampshades and deckchair covers, but Biel is always looking for new ways to enhance the business. “In the future we want to create new patterns and experiment with silk,” he confides, “but we haven’t decided on shapes or anything yet, we just keep drawing them and trying them out, so it will probably take about 2 years to finalise the designs. Francesca Fox Gymnastics By Wendy Wighton Urquhart
Six Mallorcan gymnasts between 8 and 14 years old competed in the 14th International Level and the Bath Open Championships, in the UK in July and came back with a whole bunch of medals, thanks both to their individual hard work and expert coaching from Francesca Fox who represented Great Britain in the team event at the 2012 London Olympics. “There were two International countries competing,” Francesca explains. “Turkey, who were elite level and obviously we were from Mallorca and the girls were so excited, I can’t believe how good they did, we brought back 6 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals and I was so proud of them, I cried my eyes out every time they won a medal because I knew how much it meant to them.” Francesca has a raft of titles under her belt including, British Champion, Europe Champion, World Champion and was also a Commonwealth Games Medalist in 2010 but she says nothing beats the thrill of the Olympics. “It was absolutely incredible, I still watch the videos now,” she confesses “and I still remember how I felt on the floor; we put in so much effort beforehand and we knew that when we went there it was time to enjoy it so that’s what we did.”

Francesca acknowledges that being part of the 2012 British Olympic Team was a once in a lifetime opportunity but says the stress and sacrifices that she was forced to make, particularly for the team synchronised ball event, left her with an illness that never really goes away. “I was the most curviest in the team, and in the ball event I was the only one that used my left leg; I had to dye my hair and do everything on my opposite side and I lost so much weight I was actually anorexic at the Olympics,” she confesses. “Psychologically it’s still there, I’ve still got phobias about scales, skin folds and stuff like that and if somebody weighs me I start to panic, which is understandable because I was weighed three or four times a day; they were actively telling us to lose weight in rhythmic gymnastics.”
After the 2012 Olympics, Francesca retired from competitive gymnastics at the tender
age of 20 and later moved to Mallorca where she performed in the Pirates Show in Magaluf for 4 years, before deciding to launch her own business. “I knew most of the kids in the area because they used to come to see me in the show and I thought why not do gymnastics,” she says. “I started doing one day a week and it worked really well and I was enjoying it so much I thought why not try another day

and then another and another, and now I do 4 or 5 days a week and I really, really love it, just seeing the kids faces light up when they achieve something makes it so worth it for me.” Francesca now teaches her classes at the Baleares International College in Calvià, but she hasn’t forgotten the pressures she faced as a gymnast and is constantly reaching out to kids by giving talks about body image, anorexia, bulimia and bullying both here in Mallorca and overseas. “I like to get the message across,” she assures me, “so if the girls have a question I will happily sit down with them and if they write to me I will always write back to them because obviously everyone changes, everyone goes through things and it’s not just girls, it’s boys too.”
The classes are open to boys and girls of all nationalities aged 4 to 16 and Francesca loves kids so much she also runs a baby gym for tots as young as 18 months, but she’s quick to acknowledge that it’s not all about the big competitions. “Some people just come for fun with their friends and that’s why I do internal competitions for the ones who don’t want to do International competitions and I plan little workshops and badges so they have something to work towards and compete for. The success of her pupils in Bath was absolutely outstanding and Francesca is planning to bring a number of famous gymnasts to Mallorca in the coming months to keep up the momentum and inspire them go keep going for gold. “I’m lucky I have so many contacts all over the world and so far, my Olympic Coach is going to train the students for a week, some girls from the “Gym Stars” tv programme in the UK are coming over and so are the current British Gymnastics Champion and some dancers from the Royal Ballet,” she confides, “I love doing things like that because it really helps to keep them focused on their goals.”

Bodegas Ribas By Wendy Wighton Urquhart
Today i’m taking a trip to the village of Consell which is home to Bodega Ribas, the oldest winery in Mallorca and the third oldest in Spain. It was opened by Pedro Ribas de Cabrera in 1711 and the family business is now run by his descendants; María Antonia Oliver is President, her son and daughter Xavier and Araceli Servera Ribas manage the estate and Araceli has agreed to show me around. The Ca’n Ribas estate includes a stunningly beautiful 18th century manor house which has been preserved intact along with the original barrel cellar and winemaking warehouse. Just a few minutes drive away 50 hectares of twisted, gnarly, vines swelter in the heat, their roots firmly planted in the gravelly soil, some for more than 65 years. Most of the grapes grown here are Mantonegro or Prensal but Gargollasa grapes, which were almost completely wiped out in Mallorca, now appear to be thriving at Bodega Ribas where every bunch is picked by hand and thoroughly inspected, as Araceli explains.
when they were kids and their parents would say ‘go to Ribas and pick up some wine’ when it wasn’t forbidden to sell wine to children, now they’re 90 and they’re still coming.”
“If you harvest in the morning for several hours, sometimes it’s difficult to check all the bunches properly, so we make a second selection to make sure all the grapes are in perfect condition, then we press gently to extract 60% of the liquid for the bottled wines and an extra 5% for the carafe wines,” she tells me. “Instead of making a cheap supermarket wine we prefer to sell in carafes and people come every day with their own carafe and some of them started coming 28 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
The three wines in the Bodega Ribas Sió range are named after Araceli’s grandmother, who backed her mother’s dream to become a pioneer in the wine industry when it was strictly a man’s world.

“My mum was one of 7 children and she was the one who was interested in the winery,” she explains, “so in the 1980’s she asked my grandpa if she could start working at the vineyard which was a huge surprise to him because he always thought it would be one of the sons who would take care of the winery, so my grandpa said no!! But my grandmother, Sió, persuaded him to let her try and really encouraged my mum to do it, so in 1986, my mum and dad were the first winemakers to make quality wines in Mallorca which no-one believed was possible, because back then wine was only served on the menu in simple restaurants, not in top restaurants.” Sió Negre 2017 is an elegant, fruity red wine with spicy undertones with a mineral base and was first made in 2000 as a tribute to Sió and is made mostly with grapes from the oldest Mantonegro vines. The Sió 300 2013, which was produced in 2011 to mark the 300th anniversary of the winery has a black fruit aroma, mineral and balsamic hues and is 70% Mantonegro, 10% Gargollassa and 20% Syrah. Sió Blanc 2018 is a smooth, white wine which is 56% Prensal from the oldest vines on the plantation and 44% Viognier which gives it a nice crisp taste. Araceli tells me she was studying chemistry at University in Barcelona and looking for an internship when she heard that the Lab Technician at Bodega Ribas was leaving and was ecstatic when her mum agreed to let her work at the winery for the summer.
“I thought, this is fantastic I get to go to the vineyards, take samples and taste the wine, how amazing!! I wasn’t interested in wine when I was younger, I don’t know why,” she muses, “maybe I was drinking beer or whisky and coke or something like that, but I was like Wow, wine has so many different flavours.” She immediately switched her studies from biochemistry to oenology and went to Priorat in Catalonia after graduation to work the harvest, before travelling to Argentina and the Napa Valley to learn about the wine industry. Araceli now manages the Bodegas Ribas estate alongside her brother and tells me some families have worked at the vineyard for five generations and she was surprised to find out that the workers weren’t always paid in cash. “We have some accountancy books from the beginning of the 18th century and in one of the books it says one guy was paid with reales, and another guy was paid with a pair of shoes,” she says, “imagine, maybe he wasn’t even wearing shoes when he was working at the winery!” There are three wines in the main Ribas range; the Rosat is smooth and dry with strawberry and raspberry undertones and made with 90% Mantonegro grapes; the fruity red, Ribas Negre, which has liquorice and balsamic hues is a blend of 50% Mantonegro, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah and 10% Merlot and the Ribas Blanc is a crisp white wine with a white fruit and citrus aroma and is a mixture of 85% Mallorcan Prensal and 15% Viognier.
There’s also a full-bodied Ribas de Cabrera, which is a fresh and fruity red wine with hints of cocoa and liquorice that’s made with grapes from the oldest vines at Bodegas Ribas. The Sioneta 2018 floral white wine is made with small muscat grapes which are harvested in October when they’re partly dry, then fermented for 6 months in oak barrels which gives the wine a fresh fruity flavour. And Soma 2018 has apricot, melon, citrus and white flower aromas and is made with 100% Viognier grapes. Keeping the vines healthy is a full time job at Bodega Ribas and workers go to great lengths to make sure the vines don’t get infected with the Xylella Fastidiosa Virus. “The winters have become so hot that insects don’t die, which means we have more mosquito verde so we use fans to move the vine leaves and when the mosquitos fly we spray them with Pelitre plant extract, which is a biological insecticide that kills on contact,” she explains, “we want the grapes to be healthy and not treating the vines would multiply the risk of Xylella. I just want to make the best wine that I can and the the best wine in the world for me, my family and my ancestors”. As for all that advice about how you should drink your wine, Araceli says ignore the snobbery, pour yourself a glass of wine and just enjoy it. “I like my red wine cold because when it slowly becomes warm the aromas change, but I think everyone should drink wine however they want, people always ask what the books say, but I don’t care, I drink it how I like it.” For more information about Bodega Ribas or to book a tour of the winery log on to bodegaribas.com CELEBRITY MALLORCA | 29

The Big 5 marathon takes the contestants through some very rough terrain and Anna says “running up a vertical hill in full heat and pounding through 9km of deep hot sand, was really tough.” But she made it and now that she’s added the Big 5 Marathon medal to her collection, she’s set her sights on a race that’s even more challenging. “I don’t like to repeat the same global marathons as there are so many more on offer,” she tells me. “I would love to attempt the Great Wall of China Marathon, which I might consider for 2021, but I will need a lot of training as there are countless high steps to scale.
Readers of the July edition of Celebrity Mallorca will be thrilled and relieved to hear that Author and Adventurer, Anna Nicholas, survived the Big Five marathon in South Africa and has sent me a raft of photos from her latest crazy adventure. The 42 kilometre race is named after the five big game in South Africa; elephants, rhino, buffalo, lions and leopards; it’s known as “the wildest of them all” and it takes place in the Entabeni Safari Conservancy near Johannesburg, where the contestants can literally cross paths with all five big game!
Anna told me that running in a natural environment with spectacular views and wildlife all around her was incredible, but admitted there was one moment that made her heart race. “It was certainly a novelty and a wonderful distraction,” she recalls, “but I did start when a wild pig and an African wildcat crossed right in front of me in an area of the savannah!”

Albatros Adventure Marathons organises The Big 5 Marathon and Race & Event Manager, Bo Eriksen, says safety is a priority for both the runners and the animals. “A group of trained rangers will find and keep eye contact with the groups of lions, elephants, rhino and buffalo, from the night before the race, until the race is closed,” he assures me. “If some of these animals move close to the route, we simply close that part and we also have rangers with vehicles all around the route, ready to pick up all the runners at any time if needed. The most important thing for us,” he says, “is that we are guests in animal territory. We will never move the animals, we will change the route instead and move the runners.”

Anna has written a series of best-selling books about her life in Mallorca and is super excited about the launch of her first ever crime novel, “The Devil’s Horn” on October 11th. “It’s about a girl called Isabel Flores Monserrat, who used to be a detective in Barcelona but gave it all up to run her mother’s rental agency in the Sóller Valley.” she explains. “Isabel is a sort of Miss Marple of the mountains, who eats cake, drinks wine and just loves life; she also has a pet ferret, eats chupa chupas all day, is very clumsy, stubborn and wilful but has an uncanny ability to solve crimes.” Anna says “The Devil’s Horn” was such a joy to write that she’s planning to turn it into a series and has already mapped out four more books. Beautiful Deià Deià….It’s so laid back you actually sigh as you say the name out loud. Maybe that’s the legacy of the Cistercian monks who owned most of the land during the 18th century or maybe it’s the protective mountain backdrop, spectacular sea views and hillside olive groves. There’s something very special about this village, it hits the tranquility button and lowers your stress levels the minute you arrive.
Traditional terracotta roofed homes cling to the mountainside and in the high street below, the famous, the well-heeled and the average joe’s blend together perfectly in local bars and restaurants and the village supermarket does a roaring trade with fresh, local grown produce and some very good wines. absolutely everything but it does have fresh fruit and vegetables and some very good wines. The Belmond La Residencia Hotel is the beating heart of this village and it has quite a history. After the Spanish government expropriated it from the monks in 1820, it was sold at auction to Benito Capó Puigserver who passed it to his wife when he died. His will was declared null and void by King Fernando VII, but his widow

was having none of it; she took her case to court and won. The family eked out a living from olive oil production until the mid-1980’s which is when the estate went to auction again was bought by Axel Ball, who turned it into a luxury hotel with beautifully decorated rooms, chock-full of antique furniture. Deputy Manager, Jordi Vicens has worked at the Belmond La Residencia for more than 20 years and although ownership had passed to Sir Richard Branson by the time he got his first job in Reception, he remembers that the village reacted to Axel Ball’s ambitions, with sheer disbelief. “Everybody said, there’s no beach, no restaurants and Deià is in the mountains so no-one is going to come here to stay at a luxury hotel” he recalls. “But I think he must have had a crystal ball because it has been really very successful for more than 30 years and the growing demand has brought new restaurants, hotels and investment to the village which means there’s more work for local people.” Belmond La Residencia offers a variety of rooms with price tags of up to 4,500 euros a night, including an exclusive suite designed by Matthew Williamson, which has its own garden and a private pool. There are several restaurants, a Spa, Painting and Sculpting Classes with resident experts,
a luxury hairdresser with champagne on tap, live music every night and guests can also book a donkey trail. “We walk up through the olive trees and up the mountain with the donkeys and our chef is waiting at the top of the mountain with traditional Mallorcan food like the farmers used to eat,” says Jordi. “Apart from the ham which comes from Extramadura, everything is from the island, including the wine, hierbas, liqueurs and sweet things like ensaimadas.” he assures me. “It costs 82 euros per person and it’s a 4 hour trip which includes a 40 minute walk on the way there and a 25 minute walk on the way back. It’s a great experience with a wonderful, traditional lunch in a casual atmosphere with spectacular views and everyone loves it.” Earlier this year the Belmond La Residencia was bought by the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton Group, but i’m told no immediate changes are expected.

Royalty, Hollywood Celebrities, World Dignitaries and a Who’s Who from the world of music have stayed at the Belmond La Residencia over the years and some of them were introduced to the village by the British poet and author, Robert Graves. He lived in Deià with Laura Riding from 1929 until the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, then returned to Mallorca after World War II with his new partner, Beryl Hodge, whom he later married and they had 3 children. By all accounts, Robert Graves was a very powerful figure in the village and even reportedly stopped some urbanisations being built in the pretty little cove of Cala Deià, just outside the village. He died in December 1985 and was buried under a cypress tree in Deià graveyard; his family home is now a museum. In the 1950’s, artists, writers and musicians from all over the world were drawn to the beauty and bohemian lifestyle of Deià.

At Café Sa Fonda, the rich and famous rub shoulders with the locals and celebrities like Kate Moss are regularly spotted dancing the night away on the terrace; there’s plenty of other truly great places to try too, Restaurant Nama, Café Es Punt, Bar Sa Cacera, Café Sa Font Fresca, Es Raco D’es Teix and many more are within easy walking distance. It’s no secret that tourism brings truckloads of money to Deià every year but the community here is strong, united and determined to preserve the beauty and authenticity of the village and they’re willing to go to extraordinary lengths to do it. A number of residents who own property in Deià, including Andrew Lloyd Webber,

British musician, Kevin Ayers, who was one of the founding members of “Soft Machine”, lived there on an off from the 1960’s until the 1990’s and his parties were legendary. He died in France in 2013 and his ashes were buried in Deià cemetery as were those of his friend, fellow British musician Ollie Halsall. When the sun goes down in Deià, jazz music, the steady buzz of cicadas and chatter from the bars echos throughout the village as it

! g in v o m g in v o m t e G The glass has been more than half full for me and many of us here in Mallorca and everyone celebrating summer from all different corners of the earth. The gyms have been deserted with many a training plan and good intention flown away on the planes carrying tourists to happy destinations around the globe! Unfortunately though guys and girls its time for a change, September is that time of the year to ever so slightly pull in those party reigns and attempt to regain some of that self discipline. We (as I include myself in this completely) don’t have to make massive changes, we can just start with little ones and if your funds are a little low after a lot of summer fun Mallorca is the perfect place to be to begin a little healthy transition. One of the most amazing things about our gorgeous Balearic base is that it provides a variety of fitness platforms that are free, fun and can be done alone for some down time or with a group of friends/family for that much required moral support.
Lets start with the obvious walking flip off the flip flops and wedges get yourself some sensible walking shoes or trainers and use those pinkys and see where you end up! The great thing about walking is there is no limit or restriction on time or place, you don’t need lots of planning and literally anyone can do it, its perfect for that cob web clearing walk after the weekend and I highly recommend one of the many mountain walks with breathtaking views. Next up is swimming which like walking doesn’t require a lot of planning and if you are lucky enough to have access to a pool or the sea there is literally none so just whip off your clothes and whip on your speedos, tangas or bikinis and dive right in! There is something quiet healing about floating in the sea this is partly due to the magnesium rich seawater which can according to sources help to relieve stress, relax your muscles, promote deep sleep and spiritually cleanse your aura. I personally love swimming in the
sea however you cant help but look out for the dark shadow, fin and wait to hear the sea orchestra playing dah dah, dah dah…
Now cycling can for many here on the island be a bit of a swear word setting motorists temperatures rising (and not in a good way!), however I recently handed back the keys to my car and took to the cycle paths and I have say I haven’t looked back! Granted a midday spin of the tyres in the scorching sun can be a tad intense this is where a little more preparation is required than those activities previously mentioned, a bike is obviously essential and a safety cycle hat should be worn at all times even if you are on one of the many cycle paths provided. Like walking there are many cycle routes both on and off road and in the summer a spin on the bike can bring you to the most surprisingly fantastic places just make sure you keep to the highway etiquette as a hard toot from a car can sound like football air horn in the ear hole! Also I would refrain from vino’s on route, cycling intoxicated is dangerous and extremely hard or so I have been told! Mallorca not only has a variety of ways to train out doors but also an abundance of experienced trainers who provide alternative training plans to suit everyone, this month I was lucky enough to train with the lovely Louise Middleton at her “Elasko” studio in Portal, created by founder Sonja Laskowski who describes Elasko as Body Art through dynamic stretch and tension, an innovative, beautiful system that generates mobility and inner strength within the body which hones sharp mental focus and utilises the bodies energy to it’s upmost capacity... I couldn’t wait!
As soon as you walk into the studio you are at ease, you train barefoot (which I love) but it does lull you into a false sense of security as you mentally think this session is going to be a walk in the park, its then Louise goes to work, an experienced trainer with a background in everything from Aerobics to Yoga and HIIT to Pilates she’s adamant that no other training has given her the results of Elasko and she looks fabulous so it must work. Its hard to explain the class, which can be for 1 to 3 people and lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, you use your body, the wall and specially designed bars as resistance, theres no jumping but my god do you sweat while you are taken to the limits of your physical strength and ability. Then you get to the end of the class and you are in for a treat, Louise says she finishes with an assisted stretch that pushes the body a bit further, I say you go to stretch heaven and you never want to leave! It is a great way to train alone or to use alongside other forms of training, you can also use Louise to help overcome injuries, physiotherapist often refer clients to Elasko as a part of their rehabilitation. Breast Implant Warnings Hundreds of thousands of women all over the world have breast implant operations every year, including those who’ve had a mastectomy after breast cancer. Allergan plc was the most popular breast implant manufacturer in the world until July this year when the company announced an immediate, voluntary, worldwide recall of all Biocell textured breast implants and tissue expanders because the Food & Drug Administration in the United States linked their product to a rare form of cancer called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma.

Dr J.I. García Ceballos, who is a plastic surgeon at the Mallorca Medical Group in Palma says the FDA hasn’t gone far enough. “According to the Australian Health Authorities, the risk of developing a tumour is about 0.1-0.01% of patients per year; the higher rate is mainly related to implants that are macro-textured whereas the lower one tends to be with less textured or smooth implants,” he assures me. “But the fact that the FDA has stopped the sale of the Biocell textured implants without actually asking the patients to take them out, to me, is contradictory.” Patients can have their implants checked by ultrasound and are advised to be on the lookout for symptoms that are associated with tumours. “In 60% of cases, this Breast Anaplastic Lymphoma behaves with a sudden increase of volume and liquid inside, around the implant, what we call seroma,” explains Dr García. “The tumour is not a breast tumour it’s a tumour that’s around the implant in the capsule, which is a membrane that surrounds the implant, to isolate it within your body, like a leather pocket, so if there’s swelling, pain or discomfort in the breast it should be checked.” EU and FDA regulations covering all types of implants are much less stringent than the regulations that are used for drugs and Dr García says it is time the rules were tightened up. “They just use materials that are bio-compatible, theoretically, and they do the strength tests and the bio-compatibility tests, put them in the body and then they wait and see what happens and I think this has to change, it cannot continue like this.” With new products hitting the market all the time Dr García has devised his own fail safe method to make sure the implants he uses are safe and reliable.

“Personally, I don’t used any new implants unless they’ve been on the market for at least ten years,” he assures me. “For the last few years a new type of implant has been promoted which doesn’t have silicone inside, it has crystal balls which the manufacturers claim makes the implants 30% lighter, but I have no idea what will happen to those crystals in a few years and the worst thing is that no one else knows either, so how the hell can you put these inside a patient? It’s insane.” Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma is not the only implant problem that’s hit the headlines. Breast Implant Illness or BII, is a condition that is affecting thousands of women worldwide who suffer from a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, chest pains, brain fog and depression and they are adamant that their breast implants are directly responsible. “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star, Yolanda Habib and Hugh Hefner’s wife, Crystal, have been very vocal about their struggles
Paula Docherty, who lives near Sineu bought her first breast implants in 2002 and when they ruptured ten years later she had them replaced with a brand new, larger pair, but says she started having problems about 18 months after the operation. “I started to get really, really bad chest infections and antibiotics just wasn’t curing it; I felt ill, tired and rundown, then I got pneumonia in Mallorca in June,” she says. “When I went back to the UK I was constantly ill with flu, colds and pneumonia again Paula Docherty and I started to feel very, very tired. I’ve always been really fit and toned but I just didn’t have the energy to exercise and I found it impossible to do even the easiest things I used to do at the gym. Paula had tests for thyroid, arthritis and diabetes which all came back normal, but then things got worse. “Last year I started to get tingling in my arms and numbness in my hand and by the end of last season I started to get numbness in my other hand as well,” she explains. “I had acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome, my skin was crawling and itchy and I had terrible brain fog; one day I got in my car and I couldn’t remember how to drive it.” When Paula saw Crystal Hefner’s Facebook group she realised that her symptoms were exactly the same as other people’s and after researching BII online she made an appointment to have her breast implants removed. I caught up with Paula after her explant and she told me that within 24 hours she noticed a massive difference in her health. “The numbness has gone completely in one hand and it’s 95 per cent gone in the other hand, the constant shooting pains in my legs are almost gone, my anxiety level has plummeted, the brain fog has lifted and my energy levels are so much better I feel like someone’s changed my batteries,” she laughs.
with BII, which is still largely unrecognised as an illness by most medical professionals, who say there is not enough evidence linking BII to implants. “BII has been talked about in the medical world for years and years and years, at least 15 years,” says Dr García. “It’s a very complicated issue because by definition a symptom is a subjective expression of a patient as opposed to something that you can see, touch and describe. “Symptoms are always more difficult to correlate with a disease, whereas Breast Anaplastic Lymphoma is more visible, you can actually see the tumour.
Paula says that for the first time in years she’s excited about the future, but she has some stern advice for anyone who’s debating having breast implants. “Absolutely don’t do it, it’s not worth it,” she stressed. “I regret having them done, 100 per cent. Would I ever have anything done like that again? Never, never, never in a million years, it almost destroyed my life”. COPA DEL REY Summer races along and with it the regular spectacular events that take place on the waters of Palma Bay in July and August. Chief amongst these are the Superyacht Cup and the 38th edition of the Copa Del Rey MAPFRE, or the ‘King’s Cup’ - appropriately named as one of the chief contenders for the trophy is the King himself. A previous winner,
he is no mean sailor, having competed for Spain in the Barcelona Olympics of 1992. Now racing his new Club Swan 50 Aifos - a reverse of (Queen) Sofia, royalty had to give way to fashion with the class win going to Italy’s Leonardo Ferragamo. As it was, 132 yachts in 11 different classes raced around the bay over six days, which we chased in our RIB, getting a spectacular view of the three Maxi 72s, the fastest
monohulls in the fleet. Outright fastest as always were the GC32 foiling catamarans, putting on a great show in perfect conditions as they fizzed around at speeds of up to 30 knots. Foiling is undoubtedly where this whole yacht racing game is going, particularly with the next foiling monohull instalment of the America’s Cup in New Zealand. over the years into the public sector. It will be interesting to see what even recreational yachts may look like - and be capable of - in another 15 years...

Of an altogether more sedate nature but no less beautiful spectacle, 13 of the world’s most breathtaking superyachts made the most of the idyllic and reliable sailing conditions on the waters of Palma Bay. With tacking times counted sometimes in minutes rather than seconds, these are big powerful complicated CELEBRITY MALLORCA | 43

beasts, sailed by some of the world’s best yachtsmen. The Port Adriano-based Win Win lived up to her name once again and emerged as the overall victor of the Superyacht Cup for a third consecutive time, with class winners Topaz and Bequia also able to celebrate their success after three days of close racing and enjoyable socialising ashore. Chasing the fleet again in our RIB, we tucked under the two J-Class yachts, Topaz and Velsheda, racing neck and neck and separated by a single point after three full days of racing. Having grown up as a young boy mesmerised by old black and white Beken of Cowes photographs of the J-Class’s heyday in the 1920s and 30s, we are richly blessed to be able to watch these yachts - the racing queens of the sea - fighting it out in glorious and full colour nearly 100 years later. They are the personification of power and grace - and we should doff our caps to the efforts (and eye-watering expense...) that has preserved and enriched the class - and brought no less than nine of them onto the current world stage, three of which are exquisitely restored originals and the remainder as beautifully built facsimiles of original designs.
SUMMER CLASSIC CAR SHOW Every summer, in memory and commemoration of Russell Stevens, the late manager of the performance and classic car club Driving Mallorca lost in a road accident four years ago, we hold an annual Summer 44 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
Classic Car Show at The Boathouse Bar & Restaurant on the Paseo in Palma. This year’s event, hosted jointly with the Classic Car Club and the American Car Club was absolutely packed with some extremely special cars - both an ancient and modern mix of Morgans, MGs, Cobras, Jags, Mustangs, Corvettes, Ferraris and a deep purple McLaren 720s. We put some smoke on the water by celebrating Russell’s contribution to car culture on the island with a minute of noise, led by the American Car Club’s choir of heavy metal V8s. When that had all calmed down a bit - no easy task with few taking much notice of how long a minute is supposed to last - the brilliant Glassfort Reggae Band provided a thumping beat while the Boathouse fed us all with a fantastic barbecue. This eclectic crowd of cars and people also reflect the participants of innumerable
outings that Driving Mallorca has been enjoying recently over Tramuntana’s incredible roads, less packed with bicycles through the summer months and a reminder that as a club, we are always welcoming of anyone who would like to join us in their ‘classic, fast or interesting car’ - and that on a smaller scale, the classic and performance car clubs meet every Wednesday evening throughout the year at The Boathouse - so please come along. TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY… In my former life with a London sports marketing agency, it was my interesting pleasure to meet and spend some time with the publisher Felix Dennis, he of MAXIM magazine fame - the inaugural ‘Lad’s Mag’ - and the one that coined the phrase itself.

Immodest and shrewd in the extreme, it is less well known that it was also he that coined the phrase “If it floats or flies (and does other things beginning with f…), rent it”.. It’s a valid point to make - and one that sprung to mind through endless issues that we had getting our aforementioned RIB on the water this year, brought into stark focus by some friends that had just joined RIB Club Global - a private members club with an annual membership to use RIBs placed all around Mallorca as well as Ibiza and Formentera (and other global destinations to which one enjoys access). The formula that we should all look at when making a consideration to purchase a boat is the €/hour’s enjoyment return - in that for the RIB Club’s annual membership fee of €5000 and unlimited availability, the hours enjoyed are 100%, with the hours spent maintaining it all at a big fat zero. For a similar amount each year, our return strays considerably from this with maintenance, servicing, winter storage, launch/recover logistics, summer mooring costs etc - and the fact that we had to buy it in the first place... RIB Club have been going for a while but revamped themselves in 2019, with a smaller but more expensive membership, new and better boats, much improved availability and the option to undertake discounted RYA courses to get the necessary qualifications (RYA Powerboat Level 2) to drive them (or hire one of their skippers if you don’t). It’s a bit late for us of course, but unless and until you are committed to boat

W SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP Taking me away from the island these last few months has been my VIP liaison and management role for the pan-European W Series motor racing championship an F3-based female-only series designed to promote women in sport and motor racing in particular, with the aim to get female drivers into senior single seater racing championships such as European F3, F2 and ultimately, Formula One. There is no physical reason why women shouldn’t be able to compete on a level playing field with men, evidenced by the fact that there are plenty of female fighter jet pilots out there. As our Advisory Chairman David Coulthard said, neither the fighter jet nor the racing car knows that a woman is driving it. It’s much more to do with the raw statistics of how relatively few young girls get into go-kart
racing - the first step on the motor racing ladder. Now that a season of the highest quality racing has concluded at Brands Hatch last weekend, we can look back on an incredible first season where the series has been embraced so positively by the great and good of the motor racing community and the media that write about it - and celebrate that our inaugural champion, Jamie Chadwick has been snapped up by the Williams F1 team as a development driver, as well as walking away with half a million dollars for her W Series win. It has been an enormous privilege to work with some of the most talented people in world motorsport that have made this series such a success in its first year. The French four - time F1 World Champion Alain Prost’s motor racing career started as a 14-year old with a visit to a go-kart track whilst on a family holiday. So a call to all you dads out there - get down to any of Mallorca’s excellent go cart tracks at Can Picafort, Llucmajor Racing Circuit or even Magaluf - and give the girls a go!

Two months on since Boris Johnson took power in Downing Street - and where are we now? With his strong victory statement of “We will do a new deal, a better deal that will maximise the opportunities of Brexit while allowing us to develop a new and exciting partnership with the rest of Europe. I have every confidence that in 99 days’ time we will have cracked it.”, has been rather diminished with the EU not playing (his) ball. The 9th of September has emerged as the most important of the 80 days before the Brexit deadline, with the PM trying to ensure there is no up-rising with MPs trying to block a nodeal. Insiders say the EU is waiting to see what happens when Parliament returns from recess before starting formal negotiations. However, news this morning suggests that Johnson has requested the suspension of parliament from Her Majesty, thus making the opportunity to block a no-deal Brexit more difficult that it was already. Fun and games for all!! In the meantime, we look on from the sidelines and wonder what our future holds - and how it will affect those both inside and outside of the UK. Although many Brits seem to have put their lives on hold reference any big decisions, there are those brave souls who are deciding to get on with their lives, or perhaps even get out whilst the going’s good!, with more coming out of the woodwork as we draw nearer to ‘B-Day’or ‘Fright Night’ of the 31st October, perhaps depending on which side of the fence you sit. The vast majority of Mallorca-based UK expats were obviously very happy to remain European. August is certainly not a very busy time for me with actual visiting clients, since most high-end buyers have their family and holiday time as a focus.
