EnglandLionesses’ Euro 2022-winning captain Leah Williamson has paid an emotional tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Leah, from Newport Pagnell, received a glowing message from the Queen after helping the women’s football team to Euros glory in July.

But after the sad death of the monarch in September, Leah paid her own tribute to Elizabeth II on her social media accounts.

Leah posted: “A constant

presence of grace and decency in a world that continued to change around her. To comprehend the loss of our Queen is almost impossible because it seemed, and we hoped, she could reign forever.

“A wonderful monarch but an exceptional person. A light so bright, she gave us hope when there seemed to be none, a warm voice amongst times of despair.

“A Queen who unified her people and whose spirit made her appear as one of us. Her

Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.”

Just weeks before her death, the Queen had sent her congratulations to Leah and the team following their historic triumph.

The Queen said in a statement: “My warmest congratulations, and those of my family, go to you all on winning the European Women’s Football Championships.

“You have set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations. It is my hope that you will be as proud of the impact you have had on your sport as you are of the result today.”

A new beginning for Amazing Grain

Amazing Grain, the Olney-based artisan bakery, has been a part of the local food scene for about 15 years.

Founder Gareth Roberts started baking sourdough bread from his home kitchen, then six years ago he moved the business into premises on EastHeStreet.hasbeen a regular at farmers markets and food events and is known for his bread runs to local pubs.

But this year the business has been given a boost by new owners and a brand-new shop.Icaught up with Thomas and David to find out more about their exciting plans.

It was fortunate timing that the eager entrepreneurial bakers were looking to establish a bakery in Olney just at the time when Gareth was looking to take a step back and retire.

So, from January this year, a three-month transition period saw the three of them working together at the East Street

Thenbakery.on2nd August, Thomas and David opened the new bakery shop in Fountain Court, next to Harvest of Olney.

The pair are keen to keep the essence of Amazing Grains alive, producing loaves of bread made to recipes that regular customers are familiar with.

They still have a presence at the monthly Olney Farmers

Food scene

Market, although they no longer attend the Woburn Sands Community Market.

However, their focus is on the new shop, allowing customers to walk-in and buy bread and baked goods every week.

And they are keen to expand the range too and are already selling sweet buns and doughnuts.

“Doughnuts are a real hit,” Thomas tells me, “They sell out every Currently, day!”the shop is open every Tuesday to Friday from 9am until 2pm and 9am until 1pm on a Saturday and they are very pleased by how enthusiastically the local residents have been supporting the new shop.

The stock is baked fresh

every day by the two of them and it sells out every day, and often before closing time, especially on a Saturday.

After this fantastic start, there are plans afoot for further expansion with a new baker arriving in October when they will be offering French pastries and croissants.Thereis new equipment arriving, including new ovens and, most importantly, a new doughnut fryer with greater capacity! So,ifyou enjoy a traditional baker’s shop, stocked with freshly baked goods, all handmade with simple ingredients, then get yourself along to Amazing Grains and support this business going from strength to strength.

Cloudy2Clear, A Local Service With A Smile.

Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these

values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

Join in the spooky celebrations

Music reporter Vicki McCarthy shares all you need to know about a spooky festival coming to MK11 Live Music Venue in October

If like me, you hate the thought of the clocks going back in autumn but look forward to the fun and spookiness that Halloween brings, then I might have the event just for you!

Yeah, Halloween is pretty awesome, but there’s a threeday event from Mexico that’s becoming more popular every year, one that goes by the name of Día de los Muertos, which translates to Day of the Dead.Despite the similarities and

closeness in dates, the two festivals are actually different, with the roots of Día de los Muertos tracing back to the Aztec empire, over 3,000 yearsTheago.Aztecs and other Nahua people living in what is now central Mexico held a cyclical view of the universe, and saw death as an integral, everpresent part of life.

Never being one to miss festival celebrations, MK11 Live Music Venue has an eerie extravaganza planned for you to experience from Friday 28 October to Sunday 30 October.Overthe weekend, you can enjoy live music over two veganvegetarianfoodMexicanauthenticstages, street(withandoptions), an array of the best tequilas and mezcals, cocktailsdelicious and maybe a surprises!fewAtthe expectfestival,to entertainedbe by a mixture of free suchticketedandevents, asthe

With dogs and children welcome until 18:00 each day, it doesn’t have to be just the adults enjoying the revelries.Speaking about the festival, MK11’s owner Simon O’Brien said: “This is the first time we have marked Dia de los Muertos here, and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone over the three days.

“It’s not mandatory, but we wholeheartedly encourage people to consider fancy dress to get into the spirit of the weekend, should they wish.”And what’s Simon looking forward to the most?

“Besides the music and atmosphere?” he asked, “To be honest, it’s the tequila and tacos for me! I could happily have them every day, given half the chance!”

And who can blame him?

So, to be in with a chance of enjoying the tequila, tacos and live music too, get down to MK11 for what’s set to a rather spooktacular weekend!

‘It is our job to help children find the greatness within them’

House School, I am privileged to lead a community that means a great deal to me.

At Swanbourne we believe that potential lies within every child and it is our job to work with our children to help them recognise their potential and find the ‘greatness’ within them.

Greatness is not solely about what you can do but about who you are at Swan bourne House, it describes learners who have allowed their failures as well as their successes to define them, shaping qualities of character – resilience, self-belief and risk-taking – as these are the companions on the road to potential.

At Swanbourne, every child is encouraged and supported to unlock their potential and discover what really inspires them to learn and succeed.

I am proud to say that our children are happy, and excel in not only their learning, but in their all-round character too.Understanding and promoting the whole child is our priority as we prepare to send each one off to their carefully chosen senior school with the energy, enthusiasm and resilience to cope with failure and to enjoy success.

We pride ourselves in strong academic results within a nurturing and safe

environment which enables us to foster positive mental wellbeing and a lifelong love for learning, so each child has the opportunity to achieve their optimum goals and become a “change maker.”

Enabling children to see a bright future for themselves, wherever their passions and strengths lie, imparts a longlasting sense of self-worth and value.

We want to help children to accept themselves and feel comfortable and confident in their own skin. Swanbourne

‘Search for your perfect pumpkin!’

Family travel blogger Faye Shearwood shares her favourite local places to spend time with the family as we head into autumn...

hundreds of years old.

Kids will love exploring the paths, hiding in the temples or throwing leaves in the air, and there is even a Halloween trail from 22nd October.

be the closest to the beach but we spent much of the heatwave kayaking and swimming on the Great Ouse River just outside Stony Stratford.

Family days out

Howtime flies… I can’t believe autumn is now upon us!

I’m a summer girl at heart but I just LOVE everything Fall – from the leaves turning to the pumpkin preparing… give me all the autumn hues!

One of our favourite places to embrace this season is at Stowe

Run by The National Trust, this is gardening on a grand scale; from Georgian temples and monuments, to lakes and statues – Stowe captures your imagination and allows you to tune into nature.

The Patch MK is back this month from 8th October and with a new addition – Patch Nights! Bring a torch to search for your perfect pumpkin and enjoy the bar, food and latenight music, or dare to go in the daytime and experience Victorian Fairground games, mazes, mountains and photo opportunities galore.

The Betsey Wynne in Swanbourne is also another firm family favourite of ours –due to its fantastic kids menu and vintage tractor come climbing frame outside.

We love the bunny shaped margarita pizza and chips – all for just over a fiver.

We stumbled across this picturesque picnic area by chance one day and after a quick trip to Go Outdoors for an inflatable kayak and life jackets, we took the little ones out on the open water and they had a wonderful

time!The

Calverton Road Car Park is right next to the river so it is perfect for paddle boarders too.

For me, part of the beauty of Stowe lies in its range of trees – some of which are

Whilst in the area…why not pop along to Mursley Farm Shop too? I can confirm they sell some truly scrumptious ice cream, and there is a kids playground and some farm animals just outside as well.

Milton Keynes might not

I’m hoping to take the kayak out this autumn (weather dependent of course) – and please let me know of any other kayak friendly lakes and rivers in Milton Keynes as I’m a real novice in this area!

Until next time x

Why hiring an interior designer is a good idea

interior design column

Engaging with an interior designer has always been thought of as belonging to the rich and famous. In the last few years, perceptions have changed, meaning more people have considered using a designer for their home saving them time and money.

Spurred on by TV shows, home-owners have been going interiors crazy. More and more people are craving style, personality and character in their homes but lack the skills and time to put these together. This is where a skilled interior designer can help.

Designers are naturally creative and organised people, so these attributes are what you are buying into for your home. They are adept at putting colour schemes together that work alongside furniture placement and styling the whole look.

Trust is one of the most important aspects when working with a designer. Their knowledge and experience mean they understand how people live. Designers combine colours and textures effortlessly, presenting these in a cohesive way.

Designers will challenge you, push your design boundaries and wow you with creative ideas. They think of the little details that bring room designs together.

Using natural and artificial light in rooms in a layered way is a core designer skill. Lighting can make a real difference to your end design.

Organising complimentary colours and textures for your soft furnishings are skills designers are great at. There are so many fabric combinations that it becomes tricky to get right for the homeowner.Designers often talk about flow in a room; as they can imagine rooms in 3D much better than most people, this is an essential skill you will be tapping into. Furniture placement and correct scaling of furniture to the room size is essential. Getting the proportions right for the room is critical and needs detailed

floor plans to scale for this to be guaranteed.

Gone are the days when designer fees were sky high. Nowadays, hiring a professional can work in your favour. Designers save you time; they often have preferential rates with suppliers and present designs that always work. Many designers have their own hand-picked tradesmen, which are reliable, trustworthy and professional.

Many designers project manage fit-outs, taking all of the stress out of a renovation, leaving you to enjoy watching how the scheme comes together.

Hugo is Design Director of Cranberryhome,award-winningan interior design and property styling company here in Milton Keynes. A senior House Doctor consultant, Hugo will be at Grand Designs Live Birmingham this October and is in demand as an interior designer all over the UK.

Waitrose is removing best before dates from nearly 500 fresh products including root vegetables, fruits such as grapes, citrus, apples as well as indoor plants.

The removal of best before dates is designed to reduce the volume of food waste occurring in UK households by inviting customers to use their own judgement.

away 4.5 millions tonnes of edible food every year, meaning that all the energy and resources used in food production is wasted.

“By removing best before dates from our products,

we want our customers to use their own judgement to decide whether a product is good to eat or not, which in turn, will increase its chances of being eaten and not becoming waste.

“By using up existing fresh food in our homes, we can also save on our weekly household food shop, which is becoming an increasingly pressing concern for many.”

In the UK, best before dates are designed to showcase food quality for customers, rather than safety i.e. food is at its best before this date, but it should still be OK to eat after this date has passed.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula: 30th Anniversary (out on 7 Oct)

Check your tyres before you travel Ray Pantling, owner of Tyres Direct in Bletchley, warns that 20% of all breakdowns are caused by tyre issues...

More than 41,500 vehicles broke down on National Highway roads last year because of tyre issues –that is over 20% of all breakdowns.

Yet many of those breakdowns could have been avoided if drivers had carried out basic vehicle checks before setting off, including checking their tyres. Now National Highways, which is responsible for motorways and major A roads across the country, has launched a new campaign

reminding drivers to check their tyres regularly and always before long journeys.

Tyre issues were the main causes during 2021 that people broke down on National Highway roads with 41,500 people doing so, compared to 36,000 in 2020 when traffic numbers were impacted by Covid19 lockdowns.

So far this year there have already been more than 19,300 breakdowns due to problems

with tyres. A simple check on tyre tread and pressure could prevent a breakdown and make sure you get to your destination safe and sound.

As well as running the risk of a breakdown, driving without the legally required amount of tread on tyres can adversely affect grip, braking distance and steering. While driving with under-inflated or over inflated tyres can adversely affect braking steering, distances, fuel

efficiency and the life time of tyres. If stopped by police, motorists face fines of £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. You have been warned!
