MKFM duo mark 5 years on air Breakfast Show presenters Darren and Lia celebrate half a decade

D

arren and Lia have been waking up Milton Keynes every weekday morning for the last 5 years (when Michael Blades isn’t covering for them). MKFM’s troublesome twosome have all the latest news, weather and travel for Milton Keynes in addition to the best music to start your day from 7am. As well as the latest information for the local area, Darren and Lia get that grey matter working first thing with regular features and competitions including Call My Bluff, Mrs. D What’s for Tea and, most recently, Darren and Lia’s Treasure Chest. Speaking of her time hosting the MK Breakfast Show, Lia said: “We’ve been through a hell of a lot over the last 5 years together and it’s always such an honour to share that time with our loyal listeners. “Whether we’re unpicking the news of the day, discussing local issues or having a bit of banter, being a small part of somebody’s morning routine will forever be the best part of our day.” Darren added: “Breakfast is the show we said we would never do and after agreeing to do it for a few months, 5 years have already passed. We didn’t think for one minute that we would have ended up being the longest serving Breakfast presenters in Milton Keynes. Every dog has its day, we had ours about 4 years and 11 months ago.”

Here are some of their fun features to listen out for... CALL MY BLUFF: Darren tries his best to outwit Lia with a daily stat that has three possible answers, one is correct, two are totally made up. They play daily at 7.45am and you can help Lia by contacting the studio – which always winds Darren up. MRS. D: Wondering what to have for your tea? Have no fear as Mrs D is here daily at 8.30am with food inspiration for what to cook. As well as some handy suggestions for parents, her catchy song will have the kids singing in the car on their way into school. “Mrs. D, what’s for tea?” DARREN AND LIA’S TREASURE CHEST: Throughout June, Darren and Lia gave listeners the opportunity to win prizes

MKFM Co lumn from their trove of treasure every weekday morning Listeners tuned in to hear the daily code to unlock Darren and Lia’s Treasure Chest for their chance to steal some booty or gamble their prize by walking the plank for a chance to win a star prize of their choice. From smart televisions to family day trips out, MKFM has given you a reason to say “Ooh Arrr!” You can listen to the MK Breakfast Show with Darren and Lia weekday mornings from 7am to 10am on MKFM. Festival of Food set for Campbell Park Hazel Roberts caught up with the organisers of MK’s newest food festival to find out what’s in store for visitors on September 17th...

H

aving personally played a large part in the creation and organisation of the MKFoodFest, it was with a heavy heart that we decided to wrap it up in 2020 after four very successful years. However, we were delighted when we were approached by Matt Cove from Events Managed, looking to step into the void left by the MKFoodFest. With his experience in running events such as the MK Bike Show, and in collaboration with WAC agency, it seems as if the future of food festivals in Milton Keynes is in good hands. We are looking forward to being able to attend a fantastic food festival this September without the headache of being the organisers – hope to see you there too! The Milton Keynes Festival of Food will take place between 10am and 6pm on 17th September 2022 in Campbell Park. This large, central location will accommodate numerous independent local food and drink businesses and will allow easy access for visitors from across Milton Keynes and beyond. Headline sponsor, Brioche Pasquier, an international company with a local presence, are delighted to be involved. “We are an international

brand but want to engage with the local community and we cannot think of a better way to do so!” says Olivier Ripoche, Managing Director Expect a great range of local artisan food producers and street food vendors. There will be craft beer, locally distilled spirits, cocktails, and a bar run by Silverstone Brewery. Chefs’ demos will be running throughout the day, featuring the likes of Phil Fanning from Paris House, Milton Keynes Chef of the Year James Carr, former Master Chef contestant Sofia Gallo, and students from Milton Keynes College; all taking place in a custommade demo kitchen supplied by Kiln Farm based Renov8 Kitchens. For less refined entertainment, check out the War of the Wings eating competition, where competitors will be eating spicy chicken wings live on stage, with MK Buffet Village increasing the heat of the spicy marinade at every stage of the competition. There will be 12 competitors taking part,

Food scene representing local businesses, including Odette Mould MBE from Harry’s Rainbow. Younger visitors will be kept entertained in a dedicated Kids Zone with food-related fun and games. All this will be set to a background of live music, coordinated by Newport Pagnell based, National Sound. With all the makings of a great day out, skip breakfast and come and sample the best of the local food and drink scene, enjoy the entertainment, stay all day and support local businesses too. To keep up the date with all the latest updates, follow @MKFestivalOfFood on social media.

Anniversaries are a bit of a strange one. Why do we celebrate? Does anyone care? What's the point? In March this year, Home Instead Milton Keynes celebrated its 10 year anniversary and we’re celebrating with good reason. Over those ten years we've provided quality, meaningful care in peoples' homes across Milton Keynes and the surrounding villages. We've grown as a business, in experience and as a team, always trying to improve and do the very best for our clients and our Care Professionals. When Sue Prosky set up the business in March 2002, it was personal reasons that ignited her passion to change the way care was perceived.

Celebrating our 10 year

anniversary

Sue's mother had been battling cancer for ten years. The family had been doing its best to support her but, as is often the case, her relatives didn’t live close by. Inevitably they had to call on professional care for their mother and experienced the care industry at first hand. It was only then that Sue became aware of the huge negativity surrounding the industry. It became Sue's mission to change the face of care, by demonstrating the positive side of good care and by providing help which actually enhanced people’s lives. That’s the reason we are celebrating; we're proud of our people, what we've achieved as a company and always keeping Sue's vision central to the care we provide. The Quality Care Commission awarded us Outstanding for Care, of which we are justifiably proud.

Treats and eats for summer Lifestyle columnist Amanda, AKA Ginger Mum, shares her latest discoveries, including new body treatments and places to eat in MK...

S

ummer is now in full swing and the region is looking resplendent in the sunshine! As you know, in the run up to sunny season, I’ve been enjoying trying out all sorts of beauty therapies of late, which leads me to my latest ‘tweakment’ discovery at Isis Centre in Kiln Farm, Milton Keynes.

I cannot fully explain this sorcery, it’s mind boggling to me but put simply, it zaps your fat with no effort required from you, other than drinking lots of water post treatment and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. I chose to target my bingo wings because let’s

face it, after a certain age, those blighters are nigh on impossible to shift. The easiest treatment I’ve ever done, in essence I lie still for 20 minutes each side whilst the lasers cross over at the objective area. Halfway through the treatment, I’d lost 3cms of fat from my upper arms. I can’t wait to see what results the rest of the course produces – keep an eye on my Instagram stories for updates. This painless revolutionary laser treatment can be used to target whichever area is causing most concern, give them a call on 01903 307075 to discuss your personalised laser body sculpting plan. Onto one of my other favourite subjects, food! As you all know, MK is brimming with gastronomic delights in the form of amazing independent

restaurants and takeaways. We were delighted to discover a new one for us,

Royal Wok in Bleak Hall, we enjoyed a bit of a feast from there. Serving up a plethora of Chinese, Thai and Singaporean dishes, this tasty takeaway is not to be missed. Everything we ate was bursting with fresh tasty ingredients, it’s no wonder they are building up quite a cult following already. Collection or delivery is a phone call away on 01908 663000 or online at www.royalwok.co.uk

The MK Dragon Boat Race on September 24th at Willen Lake should be quite the spectacle! A great way to support charities and enjoy family friendly entertainment for free! Call 01536 674 748 for more info or check it out online. See you in October guys!

‘The sky is the limit for Fourteen Sky Bar & Restaurant in CMK’ Jon Boyle explains why his new favourite local bar is the stunning fourteenth floor sky bar in Hotel La Tour – MK’s answer to The Shard

I

f you fancy living the sky life, then the new Fourteen Sky Bar & Restaurant in central Milton Keynes is certainly the place to do it. With the highest viewpoint in the county, the fourteenth floor sky bar in the independently-owned Hotel La Tour offers incredible 360 degree views across our new city. The interior is stunning, with stylish, soft pastelcoloured chairs and sofas to relax on in the bar area whilst enjoying a drink and nibbles in front of a giant TV screen that was showing live sport when I visited. At the time of writing this, I have visited three times – once with a friend, once with my partner, and once with my 6-year-old son (pictured right) – and I have had a fantastic time on each occasion. I would go as far as to say it is my new favourite bar in Milton Keynes, as the decor, view and relaxed ambience are matched by an impressive range of alcoholic drinks and bar food. It really feels like you have been teleported to an elite sky bar in central London when you step out of the lift and take in the surroundings for the first time. Fourteen opened in April but I was hesitant to visit in the first few weeks as the reviews from friends were that the hotel was fresh out of the blocks with largely

inexperienced staff – and all the obvious teething problems that brings. But since my first visit in June I have only seen those staff blossom, with young bartender Beau a particular star of the venue with her friendly, engaging nature. The food and drink prices in the bar are comparable to most mid-market venues in Milton Keynes, which came

as a nice surprise for such a pictureque setting. And because Fourteen is based inside a hotel there is no dress code, which is handy for when you fancy dropping in for an unscheduled drink or bite to eat. I have to admit it was a bit strange at first to see workmen in high-visability jackets drinking in the bar next to well-dressed couples, but the dress code issue is an

Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical is a feelgood voyage at MK Theatre The true story of Cornish singing sensations Fisherman’s Friends, whose charity songs led them to superstardom at Glastonbury...

B

rand new show Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical will arrive at Milton Keynes Theatre this autumn from October 4th to 8th. The all-star cast includes James Gaddas, Parisa Shahmir, Robert Duncan, Susan Penhaligon and Anton Stephans. The show is based on the true story of the Cornish singing sensations, Fisherman’s Friends, and the hit 2019 film about their life. When a group of Cornish fishermen came together to sing the traditional working songs they’d sung for generations, they hoped to raise a few quid for charity. Nobody, least of all the fishermen, expected their story to end on the Pyramid stage of Glastonbury. Packed with sea shanties, Fisherman’s Friends is a

feelgood voyage about friendship, community and music. It features hit shanties made famous by the band including Keep Haulin’, Nelson’s Blood, No Hopers Jokers & Rogues and many more. The musical is directed by James Grieve and written by Amanda Whittington with choreography by Matt Cole, musical direction by James Findlay, set and costume design by Lucy Osborne, musical supervision and arrangements by David White, sound design by Dan Samson, lighting design by Johanna Town and casting by Jim Arnold. The hit 2019 Fisherman’s Friends movie, with a screenplay by Nick Moorcroft, Meg Leonard and Piers Ashworth, delighted fans across the world with the

sequel film, Fisherman’s Friends: One and All, released this August. The UK and Ireland Tour follows a highly successful, sold-out season at Hall for Cornwall, where box office records were smashed, making it the biggest selling production in Hall for Cornwall’s 25-year history. The production will also make its North American premiere in Toronto this Christmas in the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical is produced by ROYO, Flying Fish Productions, Mighty Village, with Island Records, David Mirvish and Cornwall Playhouse Productions. elebrate:MK editor Jon Boyle is hoping his debut Pretty Girl EP will hit the right note with DJ EZ and fulfil a lifelong dream. Jon, who has been making UK garage music since he was a teenager, set himself the target of having one of his songs played by the legendary DJ and radio presenter when he left university, as one of three life goals. And the dad-of-one is now hoping his debut four-track EP strikes a chord with EZ after finally finding the time to finish it during the pandemic. Jon said: “I set myself three goals based around my hobbies when I was 21 – to become a football reporter, to become a DJ and to make a track that my musical idol DJ EZ would

The second song, Come On, is a bassy two-step instrumental track that rekindles the dark energy of DJ Zinc songs of yesteryear – perfect for MCs to spit lyrics over. The third track, Love Song, is a pumping vocal garage-house track with a nice blend of orchestral

s I write this edition's column, we’re in the midst of a heatwave and I’m in the midst of dieting to lose the leftover lockdown weight! I ended up working (and eating) more than ever during what’s possibly been the strangest and most testing of times, while others were a bit more motivated… discovering untapped skills and taking on new hobbies. My interview subject for this edition of Celebrate:MK falls into the latter category. Step forward local musiclover Chris McAlinden, who accidentally found himself becoming a gig promoter during ‘Covid times’ and is now looking forward to

hosting two revered artists at The Craufurd Arms in Wolverton this September. When we met up for a chat in July, the obvious question was how does one become an accidental live music promoter? “Like many, I was really missing live music during the lockdowns,” Chris explained. “When restrictions began to ease, there weren’t many gigs happening or to look forward to, so I thought I’d have a go at putting on an event myself.” With the seed of an idea firmly planted, Chris approached Mark Morriss, lead singer of Britpop darlings The Bluetones, who was receptive to the idea.

The scene “It started with a field,” Chris laughed, “I literally blagged a field! Along with a marquee and gazebos to accommodate Mark for the night!” The socially distanced event turned out to be a great time for all involved. So, Chris was ready to do it again and looked to arrange another gig on behalf of Mark, but this time at local venue Unit 9 in Old Wolverton. Another lockdown sadly put paid to those plans and ever resourceful, Chris and

Unit 9 hosted a ticketed, virtual gig instead, which proved to be very popular with live music lovers. Finally, with restrictions lifted and the words ‘new normal’ ringing in everyone’s

ears, Chris was able to put on a “proper gig” for Mark at Unit 9 in August 2021 – which I attended; I hasten to add. Which brings us up to now, as Chris prepares for his next bookings, with the new city of Milton Keynes playing host to DODGY’S NIGEL CLARKE and MIKE WILTON BAND this autumn. Nigel will be gracing the Craufurd’s stage on Saturday 3 September, with Mike and his band following suit on Friday 16 September. “They’re going to be great gigs,” Chris smiled. “Like Unit 9, The Craufurd has been incredibly supportive of my ideas. We can’t wait to welcome both artists along with their loyal fans and followers.”

21

So, is this new hobby for keeps? “Yes, for now,” Chris agreed. “Besides continuing to bring artists that I like and admire to MK, I also want to start working more with local, unsigned bands – I’m thinking a showcase is definitely on the cards. “But I’m open to suggestions and recommendations.” I plan to attend as many gigs as possible in the coming months, and Chris’s events are on that list. Besides the obvious joy of seeing and hearing live music, the dancing, pogoing, and moshing have the additional benefit of burning calories! For tickets to either gig, visit thecraufurdarms.com

‘Splash and play this summer’ Family travel blogger Faye Shearwood shares her top picks for local activities to keep your little ones happy during the school holidays...

Family days out

S

ummer has arrived! And with that – the school holidays. Luckily, we are spoilt for choice in Milton Keynes when it comes to parks, playgrounds and green spaces and, with countryside on our doorstep and cities close by, there is no reason to fear that long 6 week stretch! To cool off when temperatures rise, my kids LOVE a splash park or swimming pool (or failing that, even a paddling pool). Our favourite is the Splash and Play in Parson’s Close Recreation Ground. Situated in the heart of Leighton Buzzard, there is also a café, beach, skate park and band stand, with a playground currently in refurbishment. Best yet, the splash park is entirely free! We also love Eversholt Swimming Pool, situated in the beautiful village of Eversholt, just outside Woburn. On long hot days, this is THE outdoor pool to visit as

the setting is simply stunning – make sure to book online in advance as it is very popular. And lastly… Splash ‘n’ Play at Willen Lake is one of the UK’s largest splash parks with over 60 unique water features, with sessions running for 45 minutes at a cost of £5 per child. Next up, The Patch MK reopens at the end of July (check online for exact timings) – and we are so excited as it is bigger and better this year! A well as Pick Your Own Sunflowers, Wildflowers and Wheat, there are also mazes to explore (including The Lost

World Dinosaur Maze) as well as countless opportunities to explore, build, dig, climb and slide! We also recently sampled the AMAZING gelato, brownies, cookie cakes and pizza slices at the new Great Gelato in Stony Stratford and I can

confirm that they are all truly scrumptious. Best yet, they sell kid sized gelato, too. And lastly, we recently went to Thrift Farm to visit the newly refurbished Potting Shed Café, Garden Centre and jumping pillows. Nestled in the beautiful countryside of Whaddon, at Thrift Farm you can get up close to rabbits and guinea pigs, hand feed goats, collect eggs at the hen house and zoom around on the pedal tractors. There is also an outdoor play area and zip wire, as well as countless animals to meet in the animal barn. A fantastic day out for all – guaranteed. Have a lovely summer – until next time! JLP helps to solve chef shortage John Lewis Partnership is first retailer to launch a Chef Academy

T

he John Lewis Partnership has become the first retailer to launch its own Chef Academy to help address the current shortage of qualified chefs in the UK. A joint survey released recently by UKHospitality, the British Institute of Innkeeping, and the British Beer and Pub Association, revealed that staff shortages in the hospitality industry are reaching critical levels. The survey found that 76% of operators within the sector currently have chef vacancies. The Partnership will be taking on up to ten apprentices this year with the potential to increase that

number in the future as part of a long-term commitment to support the hospitality industry. They will spend a year learning and working

in the kitchens of the Partnership’s head offices and hotels, which cater for 78,000 Partners. More than 80% of the course will be hands-on experience with candidates learning different roles, helping to create everything from breakfasts to eight course fine dining dinners, Upon completion, apprentices will receive the industry recognised Professional Commis Chef Level 2 qualification. The apprenticeships are advertised on JLPjobs.com with anyone welcome to apply.

Wall panelling ideas for every room interior design co lumn

T

his season consider adding panelling to your home! This popular way to inject style comes in many shapes and sizes. Originally panelling was designed to protect walls and also add insulation. Panelling can be a simple way to bring architectural shape to featureless rooms. These days it is generally added for drama and effect in all rooms. Try creating an extended head-board with rustic boards cut to length for that earthy vibe. Pair this with whites, neutrals and plenty of foliage for a healthy living space. Using acoustic wood slats with felt backing adds immediate impact to a room. Try darker woods such as walnut or smoked oak as a focal point. Vertical slats can be particularly effective in giving the impression of a taller ceiling. These are available in 2.4m or 3m lengths. If you are leaning towards traditional panelling, then the classic tongue and groove style adds simplicity to a space. Divide up the newly panelled space with simple coat racks or peg hooks in hallways to add practicality. Everyone loves a feature wall, but if you are bored with wallpaper or an accent paint colour, consider a squared panelling feature for your dining room area. Originally dating from the Jacobean era; squared panelling has shaker style attributes because of

Panelling can be installed by a competent DIYer or a professional carpenter. With careful planning, research and enthusiasm, you can dramatically change the look of a room in a weekend. The inside track on space saver tyres Ray Pantling, owner of Tyres Direct, explains why thinner spare wheels should only be used for up to 50 miles...

S

pace saver wheels are the additional tyres that are stored in the vehicle, which are smaller and thinner than your vehicle’s regular tyres. They are designed only to get you to a safe place in order to get a regular tyre fitted. Usually, you are only permitted to drive at 50mph on a spare saver wheel and this is in dry conditions. In wet, icy

conditions, it’s important to drive with even more caution and at a slower speed. While there is no legal restriction on how far you can drive using one, it is not recommended to drive more than 50 miles and, if possible, to seek a replacement tyre earlier than that. When you are driving on a space saver wheel, you will notice differences in the handling of your vehicle.

You will likely experience decreased grip on the road , and the spare saver tyre itself will deteriorate much faster than a regular tyre . If you’re towing a caravan or trailer and get a puncture, then it’s usually OK to fit a space saver spare to any axle on the car, but be sure to check the handbook for advice regarding your vehicle. If you have a space saver fitted and are towing a caravan or

TyrE Talk

trailer, head straight to a tyre specialist for a replacement or a repair. Do not attempt a long journey. For more advice, you can find me at Tyres Direct!
