Welcome to the 2023 Manhattan Beach Rotary Celebrate Manhattan Beach!
Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Fellow Rotarians,
Welcome to Celebrate Manhattan Beach! This annual fundraiser, hosted by the Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach, supports essential humanitarian projects in our community, surrounding areas in need, and across the globe. Tonight, we come together as Rotary Club members, guests, and sponsors to revel in our extraordinary city and embrace the unparalleled sense of community we share.
Manhattan Beach Rotary is a community-driven service organization with a mission to enrich the lives of our neighbors and extend a helping hand wherever it's needed most. Our devoted members work relentlessly to address our community's most pressing challenges, backed by Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, which channel generous donations into powerful grants that fund our initiatives locally and worldwide.
Locally, our Foundation awards over $60,000 in scholarships to graduating high school students at Mira Costa and El Camino College, empowering them to pursue their dreams of higher education. Globally, we join a strong network of 1.4 million members spanning 46,000 clubs in 200 countries, all steadfastly committed to "Service Above Self."
Tonight, we also have the honor of recognizing Jim Hunter for his lifetime of dedication to Service Above Self. Thank you, Jim, for your unwavering commitment to furthering Rotary's mission worldwide.
As you indulge in the evening's festivities, we encourage you to engage with our members and explore the profound impact of our projects on our local community and beyond. Our collective efforts create lasting change by promoting literacy, fostering peace, addressing water scarcity, and improving health, including the ongoing battle to eradicate polio worldwide.
We are deeply grateful for your attendance and generous support, which enable our service projects to thrive. I am honored to serve as president of our exceptional Rotary Club, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you for joining us tonight.
Let us savor the evening, form new friendships, and take pride in the meaningful impact we make through our generosity at this event.
Thank you for attending and for your unwavering support of the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club's projects and scholarships throughout the year!
In service,
Gerry Morton
President, Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach
Dear
Fellow Rotarians & Friends,
I want to thank you all so much for being here at Celebrate Manhattan Beach to show your support for the wonderful work that Rotary does for our community, locally and internationally. We are a unique organization in that every dollar raised gets to go exactly where it is needed without paying a staff. We are a 100% volunteer organization made up of Manhattan Beach community members living by the motto “Service above Self”. With your help we are making a difference in people's lives bringing hope, joy, and change, and doing our best to make this world a better place for all.
I want to say a very special thank you to our Honoree’s, Jim & Joanne Hunter, who exemplify "Service above Self". We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for leading the way and for being the example that everyone should follow. You are the definition of "actions speak louder than words".
My first introduction to Rotary was when I was 11 years old- it was a holiday fundraiser put on by Rotary. My father and mother took me because they were both Rotarians in the Everett Rotary Club in Washington state. At a young age, I started to understand the value of giving back and Rotary has shown me the way. Then I was lucky enough to be asked to join this premier organization (because it is an honor) and have been a proud Rotarian since 2005!
Rotary allows us to give back. The Four Avenues of Service, Vocational, Community, International, and Club Service allow us all in the club to focus our attention on what fits us best and where our service can do the best good. We get to do all of this while building amazing friendships and having fun. If you are interested in learning more about joining, ask the Rotarian at your table how to get involved.
Celebrate Manhattan Beach is an event that was started in 1992 and has grown every year and has become the signature fundraiser for our club. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to put this event together and make each year better.
As President of this club for 2023-24, I want to thank everyone in advance for your generosity and your attendance. Help us to make this a record-shattering year so we can give more to those in need.
Yours in Rotary,
Lisa Hemmat-Lupercio

What is Rotary?
THE ROTARY MOTTO “Service above self”
Your contribution is a selfless act of goodwill towards others.
People often say, “I have heard of Rotary before, but what is it?”. That question is usually followed by “What exactly does Rotary do?”.
THE MISSION OF ROTARY
The mission of Rotary International, a worldwide association of Rotary clubs, is to provide service to others, to promote high ethical standards, and to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Rotary International helps in maintaining or providing the very bare essentials for people unable to help themselves. This can be in the form of providing potable water, medical care, medicine, housing, schooling or clothing. Your sponsorship will assist our club and Rotary International to fulfill those needs.
RECOGNITION
When you donate to the Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach you contribute to the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. However it is also important to note that your contribution is sincerely appreciated and recognized by our members and the local community. Your company name will be featured in our annual program as well as on our club website and our Celebrate Manhattan Beach website.
WHAT DOES ROTARY DO?
Simply put, Rotarians provide help to those that either do not have the resources, or the ability to help themselves. More specifically Rotary International has a number of overarching goals:
1 TO ERADICATE POLIO
2 TO PROVIDE CLEAN PORTABLE WATER WORLDWIDE
3 TO PROMOTE LITERACY
Additionally, Rotary International funds numerous global projects, helping not only in areas of disaster relief and famine but also running an unparalleled international youth exchange program, friendship exchanges and work study exchanges in order to foster and develop long lasting international relationships.

• Mentored children at P.S. I Love You’s Day at the Beach as well as provided financial support for their classroom activities which children experience a healthy sense of self, feel loved and believe they can accomplish great things.
• Sponsored field trips for students from Hawthorne School’s to the Roundhouse Aquarium where they learned all about our bay’s marine life as well got to experience the beauty of our ocean.
• Worked on Operation Teddy Bear project where we provided financial support as well is manpower in assembling, transporting and handing out bags containing books, writing supplies and other gifts to the delight of the students on Moffet Elementary school in Lennox.
• We packaged over 25,000 meals with Rise Against Hunger to be distributed to local families in need.

Vocational & Youth Service
thanks to the manhattan beach rotary club’s participation in making this happen
The future belongs to our children and through various school projects, Manhattan Beach Rotary Club motivates, celebrates and participates in education of our young students, both in Manhattan Beach and the surrounding lower income neighborhoods.
• Awarding over $60,000 in scholarships to graduating high school students at Mira Costa and El Camino College, empowering them to pursue a higher education.
• Richstone Family Center Our members have participated in a weekly tutoring program over a period of eight months, at Richstone Family Center in Hawthorne; this is part of the after school program for the mostly Title I students.
• Rotary Reads Rotary members brought the joy of reading to 50 Manhattan Beach elementary school classes by taking part in their story time and reading from a variety of enchanting books. In addition, the Club has contributed $1000 to our 5 MBUSD Librarians to purchase necessary books and material for their respective school libraries.
• Music Awards Our club has contributed more than $8,000 in awards to MBMS and MCHS music competition winners, as well as the MBPD Police Officer of The Year and MBFD Firefighter of The Year.
• Career Day Members have taken part in Career Day presentations at Lennox Academy High School and Environmental Charter High School, sharing their experience and word of wisdom with the students as they graduate from high school and consider higher education or a profession as their next step in life.
We donated scholarships to students in need to attend a 24 week entrepreneurial program where they had the opportunity to create a real business. At the YEA Investor Panel in April, like Shark Tank, the students individually presented their business plans and time to pitch their start up costs, marketing plans and future expansion.
