The Spiritist task for a changing world In a globalized world that is affecting human behavior, it is necessary to recognize that there have been improvements in the comfort and progress in the quality of life. However, the socio-economic, psychological, ecological, moral and spiritual costs have been devastating at the individual level, with significant losses in the realm of sensitivity and humanitarian action, due to the chaos of different types that each geographic region experiences. Spiritist work is an expression of life in the spiritual realm with the sole purpose of promoting human well being. It is a type of philosophical concept for the material translation of notions such as purity, truth, and wisdom. Since the planet Earth is a place of prayer and work, we all ought to participate in order to reach the opportunity of progress. Come, spiritist companions, and let’s sow goodness, love and peace.

of heartfelt emotion that enabled the perception of deeply empathic bonds between all those present. Charles Kempf (the Secretary General of the CEI at the time), addressed the history of the World Spiritist Congresses, their importance and historic figures. That was followed by the muchanticipated lecture by Divaldo Pereira Franco, who, for about an hour, brought a historical perspective of human’s search for the meaning of life and its value. After the break, a series of lectures followed as programmed, which ended with a well-received reflection around the theme Euthanasia and Dysthanasia. This talk was presented by the scientific director of AME - International

Medical Spiritist Association. The afternoon of the 7th ended in the auditorium with another artistic moment, this time by the sweet and smooth voice of singer Sílvia Torres, also known as Sonasfly. It is important to note that before the work in the auditorium and during its breaks, in other rooms, there were other activities: sales

of books of the many authors present and important works of Spiritism; Oral presentations with digital support of scientific posters that during the 3 days focused on the following subjects: Epigenetic (Paulo Mourinha); Music Therapy (João Paulo Gomes); Art (Renata Gastal Porto); Animal Life (Edison Siqueira); Spiritist Education (Dialogar Association); What is Quantum Physics (Nuno Cruz); Quantum, Spirituality and Health (Moacir Lima); Homeopathy (Paulo Mourinha); Nutrition and Health (Ana Sofia); PO2E - Orientation Program for Spiritist Education of Children and Youth (Ana Duarte). In the press room, more than 60 interviews and press conferences were held with various leaders of the Spiritist movement. The second day of the congress (8th), began with the vibrant vocal power of two countertenors: Luís Peças and João Paulo Ferreira, who put the room in an atmosphere of sonorous delight, as it happens whenever one listens to music of superior quality. The presenters then introduced the panelists of the morning panel. After the break, another panel was set up to work on the suicide issue, coordinated by the president of the United States Spiritist Federation, Jussara Korngold. And the morning would end with an emotion-filled talk about abortion. After the lunch break, to start the afternoon activities, the harpist Helena Madeira transported us to the highest planes of life, by the celestial chords of the harp and her enchanting voice.

The program continued, on time as scheduled and exceeding expectations. After the break, another panel was formed, this time to talk about Education. Coordinated by the psychologist and educator Miriam Masotti Dusi, the director in charge of this area in the Brazilian Spiritist Federation. Three individual afternoon lectures followed, ending with the Brazilian journalist, André Trigueiro, on the theme “Spiritism and Ecology”. The most actively filled day of the Congress - including 20 lecturers -was coming to an end, and yet

no weariness or tiredness was felt in the vast audience; they were renewed in conversations and affectionate embraces far beyond the last syllable uttered by the evening presenters. Then we got to the last day: October 9. A day marked by Barcelona’s auto-de-fe, which in 1861 tried to destroy ideas, but which remained by transforming burned paper into ashes. Before the lectures began, Maurício Virgens, a Brazilian baritone, literally filled the auditorium with the power of a vocal register that was at once imposing and endearing.

Federation and the first morning panel, Iris and Claudio Sinoti made a beautiful tribute: In Praise to Life and Love. It was then with a sense of “party coming to an end” that the great Bahia-born speaker took the floor to summarize the themes of the 8th World Spiritist Congress and the personal responsibility of each spiritist who, listening to the contents, needs to transform them into daily attitudes. To the great joy of the congress attendees who completely filled the Tejo Room to capacity, the Greater World manifested itself through Divaldo’s psychophony, articulating the message of Dr. Bezerra de Menezes, encompassing an invitation to overcoming one’s self through love, in a world that through tribulations, needs to reach true brotherhood, the only one capable of uniting humankind. After this significant message, only the farewells were left, in a feeling of culmination, with the whole organization receiving a standing ovation by the attendees, to the sound of the “Ode to the Joy” by Beethoven, sung by Mauritius Virgin without interruption, in

different languages and aided by the final video produced by the young Hugo Marques. Final words of thanks were offered in tears by the president of the Portuguese Spiritist Federation. A mixture of longing and mission accomplished flooded the hearts of most present. Hugs, smiles, eyes wet with tears tempered the affection of those hearts united by the message of love. Many bid farewell saying “see you soon”. We say, see you at the 9th World Spiritist Congress! w w w.8cem.com

Adolescence and Self-Harm Behaviors (SH) Suicide and self-harm (SH) behaviors in young people are nowadays a public health problem worldwide, with suicide being one of the three leading causes of death in the age group of 15 to 34, and the second among young people ages 15 to 19. This is immediately followed by traffic accidents (source: Saraiva et al, 2014). “The gravity of this global public health problem had already been highlighted by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly in 2008, linking all member states to this problem as a political priority” (National Plan for Suicide Prevention 2013-2017).

Self-harm (SH) behaviors are defined as: behavior without suicidal intention, but involving intentional self-harm acts, such as: cutting or jumping from a relatively high place; ingesting drugs at higher doses than prescribed; ingesting an illicit drug or psychoactive substance with an avowedly self-harm purpose; ingesting a non-ingestible substance or object (eg bleach, detergent, blades or nails). These behaviors emerge as a meta-communication (indirect 12

communication). They may occur, in a depressive context, but usually aim to achieve secondary gain and reveal some emotional disturbance. They are very frightening to parents who see their children mutilate themselves in self-harm behaviors, such as cutting themselves, burning themselves out of parents’ control. Soon, they wonder: where did we fail? What have we done wrong? At school age and adolescence, SH’s may reveal depressive disorders. Other symptoms that we can observe are: changes in appetite, mood, isolation, with repercussion on social behavior, low self-esteem, low self-image, ruminative and obsessive thoughts of death and depression, personal and social disinterest, loss of appetite and sleep as well as somatic complaints.

chronological limit to 24 years of age and making 3 subdivisions in 5-year periods (from 10 to 14, from 15 to 19 and from 20 to 24 years of age), noting, however, the unpredictability of these limits. The increase in the chronological age limit is centered upon the maturation of the nervous system, namely, the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for relationships, through rational decision-making, which is not fully developed before the age of 25. Data from recent research have shown that adolescents, when compared to adults, base their decisions more often on immediate rewards of greater emotional intensity. (Bjork, 2004). Also the cerebral circuit of motivation and reward is of great relevance in the neurobiological study of behaviors in adolescence, involving several cerebral areas, such as the prefrontal cortex, the nucleus accumbens, the hypothalamus and the striatum.

In adolescence, the symptoms of depression are already overlapping with those of the adult, however, “atypical depressions” that frequently occur with changes in appetite, hyperphagia (increased appetite), lethargy (lack of energy), hypersomnia (excess of sleep) and in this age group there is a greater occurrence of self-harm behaviors, while the risk of suicide and of addictive behaviors increase.

This comparative reduction in the excitability of the motivation circuits associated with the prefrontal cortex’s immaturity may be considered the neurobiological basis for certain frequent (and normal) patterns of behavior in adolescents, such as impulsiveness and a greater tendency to risky behavior, which in the past were often confused with psychopathology and negative concepts of adolescence as a stage of “storm and restlessness” or “crisis.”

We classify here adolescence as a stage of development and maturation between childhood and adulthood, characterized by important physiological and psychosocial changes. It is the ages defined by the WHO (World Health Organization) between 10 and 19. Initiated by hormonal changes that signal puberty and develops for several years, with its final stage being a controversial subject. More recently, the WHO has increased the final

Young people who display self-harm behaviors, often do not want to die, but are asking for support to overcome something; or because they want to prompt some kind of reaction; or due to a feeling of all-powerfulness; or to challenge; appeal; or a gamble with the life or fleeing of something with which they can’t cope, or simple impulsiveness. Even so, such attitude deserves all the attention from parents, as it

reflects something that does not fit well with the youth and can escalate into a more serious disturbance, such as actual suicide attempts. The SH behaviors often portray the difficulty of the young person in dealing with the various demands of this phase in life, as well as the changes with their own body; the identification and creation of new relationships with peers; change in the relationship with parents; the awakening /construction and affirmation of a sexual identity; the development of autonomy; as well as the family’s acceptance of all these processes. According to Gullotta, Adams and Ramos, some factors that promote the crisis are: excessive anxiety; marked low self-esteem, which can be associated with restrictions in social contact, the extreme need for approval or too much susceptibility to peer influences; family conflicts or extreme intergenerational conflicts, which weaken emotional attachments; failure on the part of the family to recognize the growing need for autonomy / underestimate important milestones in the process of autonomy; patterns of socialization with no supervision. We understand that from the spiritual point of view, the person who is depressed, be it young or adult, will always have spiritual companies, alike, that feed their mental state. And often, we find in our daily practice, obsessive processes that begin in adolescence and whose target is the family. SH behaviors and suicide attempts are also often related in adolescence with problems of sexual identity. Statistics show that young people in this age group with identity problems are six times more likely to be at risk for SH behavior or suicide attempts. It is still important to emphasize that there is no single risk factor or only a solution factor that can prevents or determine the suicide act. We

must think about them as a whole and fit them in the specific context of the individual and his personal history; such as the existence of a balanced family environment, socially adjusted and supportive school environment. The opposite is the presence of sexual abuse in childhood (15 to 20% of girls who attempt suicide have a history of abuse in the family, or a history of bullying, making them more vulnerable to the risk). SH behavior and suicidal acts (suicide attempts and consummate suicide) are inextricably linked, and it is difficult to approach them separately. Are they two sides of the same coin? In international studies, 10% of adolescents report self-harm behaviors. (Madge et al., 2008; Moran et al, 2012). In Portugal, a community sample of 1713 adolescents (12-20 years of age) of public schools in the metropolitan area of Lisbon showed that 7.3% of adolescents had had at least one episode of self-harm behavior. It is known that SH behaviors are more common in adolescents older than 12 years of age, among girls, in adolescents of lower socioeconomic means. The most frequent types are self-mutilations and repetition is very frequent. The predictive factors of repetition are: depression, history of sexual abuse, exposure to self-injurious behavior and concerns about sexual orientation. In most cases, SH behaviors in adolescences cease early in adulthood, although they are more likely to persist in women than in men. The persistence of these behaviors in adulthood linked with the same behaviors practiced repeatedly over a period of time in adolescence. SH behaviors without express suicide intentions may

escalate to acts with greater suicidal intentions. SH behaviors have become increasingly common at 12 years of age, particularly among girls, so that between 12 and 15 years the girl-toboy ratio is 5 or 6 to 1. There are some situations that are related to increased evidence of SH bevhavios and suicide attempts among young people: separation / divorce from parents; conflict and family disagreements; parental neglect; death of a father; history of physical and sexual abuse; bullying; interpersonal difficulties; romantic breakup. (Hawton, 2012; Santos, 2012). We also notice spiritual factors, in addition to social and familial predisposition, regarding “spiritual heredity”, i.e. the fruits of our past tendencies, marks of our past existences, in the form of depressive traits, sometimes even displayed at an early age. Other times, even in early childhood, when the spirit, because of refusal to reincarnate or because of difficulties in adapting to life, to its parents, who are not always individuals with affectionate ties from its past, demonstrate the “disturbance of attachment” and open family conflicts are presented earl. Other times it is due to nostalgia or longing for the spiritual plane it left behind, leading to a depressive feeling in the form of “depressive anguish” or

The proposal of Spiritist education is a one of education of the SPIRITUAL BEING, which aims at: (1) The creation of a healthy family psychosphere [or psychic atmosphere]; (2) Education for positive attitudes and behaviors; (3) Fight negative mental fixations; (4) Stimulate mental and emotional activity; (5) Group participation (Coping); (6) Child and Youth Education; (7) Energetic and spiritual treatment (passes and magnetized water); (8) Disobsession when recommended; (9) Gospel in the Home. existential emptiness. Another important spiritual factor can occur in the teenage phase, especially when in the blossoming of youth, there is the awakening of mediumship. It is known that in this age group, the second cycle of mediumship surfaces, and this can be accompanied by depressive symptoms (sad moods, mood swings, sudden mood changes, irritability) or depressive equivalents (somatic symptoms, such as headaches or nonspecific ones). These symptoms have to do with the psychic sensitivity of mediumship that is surfacing. We believe that the youth who engages in suicidal behavior will be in the company of less fortunate minds in harmful processes of mental influence that the less watchful mind incites and allows. In conclusion, SH behaviors and suicide amongst the young are a complex and multi-dimensional phenomenon. The young man or woman who engages in SH behavior or tries to commit suicide “failed in his evolutionary process of development and in their multidimensional relationships”(individual, family, social, peer-to-peer). In suicide attempts and SH behaviors, there is an attempt to restore identity and anything that one wants to express about family communication (Sampaio, 2002). 14

Parents have an important role as an example for their children, messengers and mentors for a culture of peace and love and often when children are not receptive to the Spiritist doctrine that can reach the Home through them. Children learn through molding, by example, and not by the assertion: “Do what I say, and do what I do.” However, even if the youth refuses, the spirituality always helps, even at a distance, and the young person can receive the desired assistance. SH behaviors, depression and suicide in adolescence are a serious, multifaceted problem that requires a multidisciplinary, psychoeducational, therapeutic, psychopharmacological (when necessary) and psycho-spiritual approach. And the Spiritist Center has an important role in the education of the family, in the promotion of values towards the preservation of Life, and of the Self, learning to love oneself as an essential value for evolution. YEAR 20 - NUMBER 62

The Discipline Lesson follow a favorable course. And the more noble this goal is, the more discipline must be aligned with ethical behavior, the lack of which has produced the regrettable results we have been following nowadays.

It became famous; that first meeting between the medium Chico Xavier and his spiritual guide, Emmanuel. The young Chico was unsure when he had a glimpse of the work before him, and asked the guides for protection so he would not fail in the work entrusted to him. And after instructing him to work, study, and strive for good, to ensure that spiritual support would not be lacking, the former Roman senator established that three factors would be essential to accomplish the work. And when asked by the medium what these were, he repeated three times the word “Discipline” 1 ...

In the realm of human behavior, many parents and educators complain about the indiscipline of youth and children, warning that this has been observed with greater frequency, and that they no longer know what to do to solve the problem. In an attempt to find those responsible this state of things, school, television, and technology are often pointed as the culprits, and often the blame is placed on young people themselves, who are no longer like those of old. Is this so?

But what is the essence of this virtue?

Certainly we are living in new times, in which technology has greatly changed the relationships and communication processes. But the human basis, its psyche, remains with the same challenges, only adapted to new realities. And much of children and youth’s behavior are a reflection of what they learn or fail to learn within their homes. If something happened in the trajectory between the old generations and the present generation, we must ask ourselves what are the gaps we have left.

The word “discipline” comes from the same Latin root as disciple, and from this we conclude that just as a disciple must be attentive to his teacher’s directions, discipline involves organization, dedication, and willingness for a particular project to

The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, referring to the educational process, was already attentive to something essential: “Whatever we want to change in children, we must first examine if it is not better to change it in ourselves “ 2 1

22

In this regard, we must look again at the root of the word discipline, since before requiring the disciples to be correct, we must ask ourselves whether we are good examples as teachers. If life requires discipline for all, it is above all we adults who must exemplify it in our behavior. And being honest with ourselves, have we been disciplined in the fields of morality, health, studies, work, religion, society, etc., in the same manner that we demand of our children? Have we spent the time needed to help them cope with the dynamics of modern life, full of interactivity, information and access to all that can be sought? Have we tried to understand the new dynamics of the world? If we fail to realize this, it is difficult to get a dialogue with the new generations going, and therefore establish a discipline program that can help young people in this transition period lead a healthy life. From all these factors, the discipline required for the moment in which we live is not limited to the attainment of material objectives in life. Such goals, although they also require organization and effort, are often illusory and transient. The discipline to which we are referring is essentially moral, aimed at the attainment of values and virtues, which will allow us to take flight towards the completeness that awaits us. Have we practiced this discipline, so we can teach it to our children? Recently a patient told me something funny. Her daughter had asked her why she had not yet taken her to the Spiritist center for the evangelization activities, as she had a colleague who participated and liked it very much.

And after much insistence, the mother took her to the meeting. At the end, the six-year-old daughter told her mother, “and it won’t be just today mom, I want to come every week.” There is a great moral and spiritual lack in these modern days, which we have observed in the examples of so many empty lives, resulting in endless tragedies. Discipline, coupled with moral values and a healthy existence, is the way to build a new era, based on new values. Chico Xavier was able to complete his journey, with many sleepless or badly slept nights, much incomprehension and with his physical health being put to the test several times. However, disciplined and connected with his conscience and his spiritual guides, he was able to fulfill his trajectory of light. May we, in this example by the remarkable apostle of mediumship, extract the lesson of discipline, incorporating it into our behavior.
