Each day human beings face affectivity disorders, we either love immensely or we feel as nobody loves us, and we produce a multitude of reactions that range from suicide to charity. In times of pain, each of us, search for answers to the suffering caused by a relationship, by family, moral, spiritual or material natures.

And we seek support in various forms like advice from family members, friends, religion, philosophy, mental health professionals and even through social networks. But we need to build our own resilience, which helps us deal with the tricky situations that affect us; life isn’t like it was painted to us, it is how we draw it to be.

Let’s remember that the human nature is compassionate and if it faces deep anguish, sadness, fear, anger, and stress that end up unbalancing our immune response and diminishing the resources we have available to face our daily challenges, it needs to find a guiding way and to make the decision that our spiritual level considers adequate to continue the evolution of our own spirit. In the study of the Spirits’ Book, we find a light that illuminates the materialistic culture that we live in, a culture which does not value the ethical and moral values and virtues. For this reason, the International Spiritist Council, by means of its South American Department, promotes the 4th South American Spiritist Congress in the coming 14th, 15th and 16th October, 2017, which will take place in Bogota, Colombia, on the topic “The Spirits’ Book” of Allan Kardec, in celebration of its 160 publication Anniversary, in Paris, on 18th April, 1857.

It is the study of this work, of great current utility for the self-knowledge of humanity as a new paradigm to keep facing the challenges of daily life, the central theme of the Conference “The Era of the Immortal Spirit”, so innovative and consistent like the technological progress we’re experiencing; may we make good use of the current reincarnation with the motto “Spiritist Doctrine, Route to Happiness”, since it’s the practice of love and solidarity that leads us to pursue our own path.

Children Evangelization

Soler, in Guayaquil, Equator, and also work teams in the area of Education in the Coordinadoria Espirita de Ecuador (Ecuador Spiritist Coordination), Unión Espirita de Peru (Peru Spiritist Union), Federación Espirita del Pacífico (Pacific Spiritist Federation), Federación Espírita de Centro Occidente (Midwest Spiritist Federation), Federación Espírita del Surcolombiano (South Colombian Spiritist Federation) and Federación Espirita de Cundinamarca (Cundinamarca Spiritist Federation).

In October 2017, we continued the tour in Colombia, this time visiting FESDAT, in Barranquilla, FESMAG in Santa Maria, FEDEORIENTE in Bucaramanga and FESPTOL in Ibague.

By invitation of CEI’s South American Department, represented by Fabio Villarraga, we toured the countries of Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia between 15th and 31st May, 2017.

We visited eight cities in which we had the opportunity to hold meetings with workers and directors of the Spiritist Centers, to perform seminars/ courses for educators, conferences with a focus on the importance of Spiritist Education and visits to social works dedicated to the care and education of children in areas of risk and/or deprived of resources.

In Europe, from 16th to 31st June, we had the pleasure of receiving Dr. Lucia Moyses once more, who successfully delivered conferences in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and the United Kingdom. In this occasion, we launched her new book: “God Trusts the Parents”.

In September, we will be conducting a seminar about “Mediumship and Obsession in Childhood and Youth” in Dunkirk, France and the first “Encounter for the Spiritist Youth”, taking place at the same time as the Spiritist Philosophy of Life Meeting in Bucharest, Romania.

MOVIE DEBATE: GHOSTBUSTERS On 28th May the Brazilian Spiritist Federation held the first movie debate of 2017 with the movie Ghostbusters.

Gold Coast City “The Gift of Life”- is the theme of the Spiritist Film Festival and was selected to support the campaign of the World Suicide Prevention Day, which also happens in September, worldwide. The lectures and themes of the films are an invitation to reflection and the practice of gratitude. Topics that play an important role in the process of “Appreciation of Life”, such as the importance of mental and spiritual consciousness in the process of transformation to achieve inner peace, will be addressed. The youth Coordination of Philippines is focused on broadening the programmed study into two years, in Sundays Schools, which operate in churches. These young people and children are getting to know Spiritism - through Spiritism Quiz Bee-Syllabus.

200 young people participated in the last celebration event for the of 60 years of the Grupo Espírita Humildade (Spiritist Group Humility).

The directed work is organized by Kuya at the Federation for Youth Spiritists. The Philippines is a Catholic country, but the Sundays Schools are accepting the Spiritist study.

Dubai- vacation break, activities will resume in September. This semester classes, in the light of the Spiritist doctrine, were planned based on the book Genesis. In the last class, families gathered for the lecture and participated in the campaign “Dubai Sharing Fridges”; parents and children worked together in buying and preparing foods that have been distributed in refrigerators (70 this year) scattered through the streets of Dubai, to feed the needy population in this period of Ramadan. This is an Islamic celebration, a time to socialize with family and friends, it is also an opportunity to renew oneself in faith and charity - an excellent opportunity to gather everyone to work, exemplifying the theme of the day “Universal family”.

Children Depression in Adolescence

Data from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the WHO (World Health Organization) European Region, show that one in five children and adolescents has mental health problems (Cerejeira et al., 2014).

The prevalence of psychiatric disorders increases with age, going from 8% in first infancy/preschool age, to 12% in children of school age and to 15% in adolescents (Goodman, 2005), increasing progressively as the character of the individual consolidates.

“In the periods of infancy and adolescence, the person forms its character under the inheritance of previous reincarnations, which not always express themselves in a happy way, sometimes producing shocks and pains that must be attenuated, channeled by education (…)”, (Joanna de Ângelis, Adolescence and Life. 2014).

In addition to the trends of the past expressing themselves in the present, for example, through depressive, phobic, anxious symptoms, etc., there are clinical situations that require intervention, even if they do not yet meet the

diagnostic criteria for a psychiatric disorder (Santos, 2013), and that may benefit from psychological, psycho-pedagogical, and/or pedopsychiatric counseling.

In general, there are four age phases: - First infancy: 0 to 3 years; - Preschool age: 3 to 5 years; - School age: 6 to 12 years; - Adolescence: 13 to 18 years.

We can classify the pathologies in accordance with the age group: 1. Early start - Disorders of the autism specter; - Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; - Attachment disorders; - Specific phobias; - Selective mutism; - Enuresis; - Developmental disorders; - Oppositional disorders.

2. In Adolescence - Depression; - Mania; - Psychotic episodes; - Suicidal ideation/self-harm; - Panic and agoraphobia; - Bullying; - Eating disorders; - Substance abuse.

In what concerns depression in infancy, we know suicide is the third most common cause of death among adolescents, worldwide. This is a growing problem in this age group, in the form of suicidal behaviors or, more commonly, self-harm.

“any act through which one individual causes injury to oneself, independently of the degree of lethal intention and of the knowledge of the true reasons for this act”. (…) “It encompasses threats, gestures, suicidal attempts and finally, the achieved suicide (…) (Saraiva C., 2014).

Self-harm behavior constitutes a behavior without suicidal intent, for example, to cut oneself, to jump from raised places, to ingest high amounts of medicines, without lethal intent. They can occur in a depressive context, but, usually they aim to obtain a secondary gain and they manifest some emotional disorder.

When analyzing the causes of depression, it can be understood that children development is affected by multiple factors: intrinsic, biological, genetic, constitutional and extrinsic, parental relations with caregivers, socio-familial and cultural characteristics.

The prevalence of the depressive disorder in first infancy is relatively low, around 1% to 2%, going up to 5% in adolescence (Goodman, 2005).

As with the adult, the treatment aims at a multifactorial and multidisciplinary approach, through psychoeducational, therapeutical and psychopharmacological approach, when necessary.

In this age group, school involvement and the encouragement of coping mechanisms are important, along with the peers, reinforcing positive

prevention of emotional disturbances, namely depression.

The Spiritist child and adolescent learn that we are not alone in this evolutionary journey, and therefore that there is no space for the feeling of solitude, despair or hopelessness, because, as children of God, we will never be forsaken.

The reality of the spirit begins to integrate their moral and ethical formation and they learn that, as immortal spirits, life on earth is but a ticket, being our true life the spiritual life.

It is worth mentioning that depression in school-age may present itself in a peculiar way in this age group, not necessarily meeting the usual diagnostic criteria we use for adults.

Depression symptoms are commonly seen in adults, such as apathy, irritability, emotional lability, easy crying, sleep disturbance, can be present but there might also be others like: tantrums, refusal to eat, growth and development impairment.

In depression in school age, the child presents dysphoric, irritable mood that many times is confused with petulance, and which can be more frequent than sad mood. The symptoms are closer to the ones of the adult. There can be present also sleep disturbances, low self-esteem, low self-concept, ruminating and obsessive thoughts about death and depreciation, personal and social disinterest, isolation, loss of appetite and sleep and somatic complaints.

In adolescence, the symptoms are already superimposable to the ones of

the adult, however, there is a higher frequency of “atypical depressions� presenting with hyperphagia, lethargy, and hypersomnia. In this age group, the risk of suicide and of addictive behaviors is increased.

In children and in adolescents, some symptoms such as tantrums, enuresis, encopresis, aggressiveness, lack of concentration and of attention are considered depressive equivalents.

The Spiritist adolescent understands that all suffering is temporary and changeable, freeing themselves from pain and developing greater resilience to face the vicissitudes and challenges common to all creatures, in a more mature and more conscientious stance, questioning themselves as to their existential role and leading their life by this objective, thus fulfilling their destination.

It is appropriate to emphasize that by speaking of depression, we are not speaking of normal sadness, adaptive and reactive to life situations, as contextualized reactions of adjustment.

These are transient and adaptive, they do not cause unnecessary suffering to the individuals and they do not make those around them suffer.

Youth Spiritist education can be a useful tool to_ the balance of children and of adolescents who bring in themselves, from their past, a depressive tendency, or who develop it in this life, because they learn early on to love themselves in this exercise of loving life, understanding that they are an integral part of the creation, developing an emotional guideline, important for the

Dear readers,

We mentioned in the last edition of this newsletter, the intensification of the dissemination of Spiritism among the native Europeans. This work continues ... let’s take as an example Elsa Rossi’s recent visit to Finland where she gave a lecture for an audience of 300 spiritualists, for the release of the first two Emmanuel novels translated into Finnish, and another example was a lecture in Estonia, where more and more people are interested in the Spiritist doctrine. As Kardec mentioned, before making someone a Spiritist, take care to make them a spiritualist.

This action among the spiritualists follows this advice, when it comes to bringing the teachings of the Spiritist philosophy to them, without proselytism, leaving people time to study to form their own opinions. And the results do not delay to arrive.

A research done in France in 2015 showed that 44% of people believe that you can remember a past life: in other words, at least 44% of French people are spiritualists and believe in reincarnation. Another survey from 2009 in Germany establishes that 2/3 of the Germans are spiritualists. This confirms the communication received in Brasília by the mediumship group that supports the global Spiritist movement, of which, our late Nestor Masotti always reminded us: many people around the world are ready to welcome the Spiritist doctrine, but the doctrine has not been made available for them yet. This dissemination work, which Emmanuel qualified as the greatest charity one can do for the doctrine, should be the priority of the Spiritist Movement in each country and must be done in accordance with the local culture, customs, and languages. The priority should be a good translation of the 5 basic books of the Codification in each language, which is still a huge effort in Europe, that has 24 official and working languages in the European Union only. Keeping the same goal in mind, we confirm the next “Spiritist Life Philosophy Meeting”, in Bucharest, Romania, on 30th September and 1st October, held in English, a language understood by most Europeans. IN THE SPIRITIST MAGAZINE FEE

The Spanish Spiritist Federation will launch in September a new issue of its magazine. This issue will be dedicated to the perispirit, with interesting articles, reflections and readings about the subject.

JUNE in the month of June it took place in Madrid the course SPIRITIST PRACTICE OF PASSES, organized by the Training & Mediumship Committee. The course targeted the workers and attendees of the Spiritists centers.

JULY On the 2nd July, 2017, the celebration of the III SPIRITIST JOURNEY AMELIA BOUDET gathered members of different Spiritists centers of Catalonia. It was a special day full of emotions and good vibes from all people who participated in the event.

Irene Malvezi is already known for having painted Kardec’s/Amelie’s work in 2004 (CEI’s collection). In the following day, Sunday, at the hall of Queen Mary’s University - 380 people.

Divaldo’s book - Be Happy Today - was released. Dr. Juan Danilo Rodriguez, who accompanied Divaldo throughout this tour, delivered two lectures in London. BUSS awaits a confirmation from Divaldo for 2018.

In May, some Spiritist Groups had lectures by Flavio Zanetti, from the USA, 3 of them in English. In June, the group Chico Xavier Spiritist Society celebrated its 10 years of activities by inviting Adalberto Baquit to deliver a series of lectures in London.

The Family Core

The family experience is crucial for the psychological and spiritual formation of the individual as, in the condition of gregarious and sociable beings, we need a base structure that will assist us in building our personality, thus preparing us for a broader experience in society. However, when looking at today’s panoramas, in which violence still rampages, at the ethical-moral deviations and at the alarming rates of depression and other psychological disorders in general, among other factors, we find that the family entity is not fulfilling the function to which it is destined, because when selfishness prevails in the society this means that the family ties are weakened.

And among the functions of the family for the promotion of the individual, we can highlight: - To stimulate the development of affection, in a healthy and broader way:

the love that crosses the border of the family circle and reaches all humanity; - To assist the development of autonomy, freeing the individual from any kind of dependence; - To provide education founded on altruism, which pushes the being outside the borders of his own ego; - To provide the development of the consciousness of the immortal spirit which we are; Challenging objectives, as we know, and for that very reason they must be faced with responsibility. The central problem is that, in most cases, individuals do not prepare themselves properly for this mission, causing conflicts that interfere negatively in the individual psychology of the being, and consequently on society.

While developing affectivity, the great challenge for the family is learning to love. It should be started even before the pregnancy, when the couple is invited to behave lovingly with one another, respecting each other’s individualities – exercising self-love – and creating adequate conditions for a welcoming home. The more the spirit who reincarnates feels welcomed and respected, the more the family ties strengthen.

Fostering autonomy – the ability to self-manage – should be part of the educational process of the family.

The psychologist James Hollis emphasizes the issue, saying: “the greatest

psychological task for the parents is not to “ facilitate” things, but instead to prepare the transition to the total separation, for the subsequent stage we call adulthood.” In this respect, parents should learn to assign responsibility to their children, which does not mean lack of loveliness because there is no more loving gesture than to prepare a child for the natural challenges of existence.

Being selfishness the major ulcer of mankind, the family should stimulate altruism. Instead of living and basing our achievements out of ego, which usually translates into “having, possessing, controlling etc.”, family education should prepare the child for “being”; not to “be someone in the world”, as conventionally is believed to be important, but to be someone who can help transform the world in which we live.

And perhaps all of these issues should converge to the most sublime task: to help the being in his/her spiritual development. This is not about the me-

rely dogmatic development of religion, but instead about the construction of an environment conducive to religiosity, where the being improves his own connection with his inner self, with the others and with God. The examples set by the parents become the safe road safe their children can follow, and the relationship with God – the internal religiosity of the family members – will enable the family to fulfill the noble ideals to which they are destined.
