African American Men’s Skincare:

Beard Hyperpigmentation

In the past weeks we’ve covered shaving techniques and tips to prevent ingrown hairs and razor bumps. These skin issues often cause scarring and discoloration after shaving. But besides these darker bumps that some African American men struggle with, many men with darker skin often find that their beard area is darker than the rest of their face simply due to shaving in general. It is true that repeatedly shaving can cause hyperpigmentation on the face, which can lead to an appearance that one hasn’t shaved at all. We will cover a few options below and go into more detail about why this phenomenon occurs.

Shaving Technique

Shaving in general causes irritation as the blade runs across the skin. We’ve covered a few tips in our razor bump prevention article such as shaving with the grain to prevent too close of a shave, using shaving cream, and exfoliating. These same shaving rules will reduce hyperpigmentation. What appears as darker skin is left over scarring from past razor bumps. These scars are very small and collectively amount to what is know as a “5 o’clock shadow.” Following proper shaving techniques can help prevent future scarring.

Exfoliation

Exfoliating the skin is a major part of removing dark patches. Exfoliation helps to remove dead skins cells and regenerate new cells. Try Clear Essence Complexion Soap with AHA or Blemish Control Wash Formula if you still suffer from ingrown hairs. The salicylic acid in our Blemish Wash will help remove dirt and oil, which clogs hair follicles.

Skin Lightening Products

Hydroquinone has been a proven ingredient in lightening dark spots and hyperpigmentation in skintones. If you have oily skin try Clear Essence Advanced Complex Fade Gel on the skin at night to begin fading discolorations. For dry skin types our Medicated Fade Crème adds moisturize to the skin while lightening scarring or hyperpigmentation. Be sure to apply sunscreen over these products to prevent re-darkening in the future!

Waxing or Laser Treatments

In the future you may consider removing shaving from your regimen all together. If you prefer a clean look 24/7 laser treatments destroy the hair follicles making shaving a thing of the past. Waxing is also an option in pulling hairs straight from the root. This reduces ingrown hairs and lasts slightly longer than shaving. These treatments can also reduce hyperpigmentation as there is less irritation since there is no blade running over the skin constantly. Whatever path you go down to reduce hyperpigmentation, be aware that it is a common occurrence for men of all skin types and tones. Many learn to deal with a constant beard shadow as it makes them appear more masculine. Remember to always embrace your skin tone!
