Black Men’s Skincare: Beard Care Many African American men would like a beard or already have one. However, most do not know the proper way to care for their facial hair resulting in damage to the skin or hair follicles. Read below on maintaining and cleaning your beard!

Deciding your Face Shape

Be mindful of any patchy areas as this might make your beard look less maintained. Consider changing your diet or seeking a dermatologist if you are set on growing out your facial hair but have uneven growth lengths. For rounder faces, keep your beard wide. Tampering the beard to your Adam’s apple will also give the illusion of length while elongating your face. If you have a chiseled face, consider growing out the hair on the chin and jawline.

Trimming your Beard

Decide if you will use a beard trimmer or scissors. A beard trimmer will have a guide to prevent clipping too short. However, scissors give more freedom to remove out of place hairs. For an airbrushed cut, slick shaving oil and use a double-sided shaving razor. Make sure to start shaving after a hot shower to open up the pores and keep hairs from growing back into the skin after shaving. Clear Essence Chimere Skincare products are also designed for men’s shaving and skincare. Read more razor bump prevention tips. Start from one ear and move across the chin. Ensure that both sides are even.

Shampooing your Beard

Avoid using a bar soap as it can be drying and cause an itchy, uncomfortable beard area. Instead use you’re regular shampoo and conditioner to moisturize the skin and leave hairs soft. Black men’s beard care can be difficult due to patchiness and coarse hairs. However, by using the right products and technique, you can have a beard like some of your favorite celebrities!
